It didn’t take long for those “Will it Blend?” videos to get long in the tooth. You can only watch so many smartphones being torn to shreds before the novelty wears off. But to celebrate the birth of his 40th grandkid, Tom Dickson tosses a mountain of magnetic Buckyballs into the blades and the results are as spectacular as they are incredibly dangerous to try at home. Seriously, don’t try this at home.

On the scale of “irritating” to “soul-boiling” telemarketers, college alumni fundraisers aren’t the worst. The way that school alumni relations offices decide which former students to contact, however, is a liiittle creepy. Colleges are scouring former students’ Facebook and LinkedIn profiles to figure out who to hit up for cash, and using targets’ interests to make pitches as manipulative and persuasive as possible.
Sundance 2015 is the year of VR. 360-degree films flooded the festival unlike ever before, creating a metaphorical starting gun for an entire new film industry. Oculus VR took the opportunity to launch its own film-focused studio along side tons of other cinematic VR projects.
Every six months, Facebook reveals how many times a nation requests that the site block content that’s considered illegal. In the first half of 2014, for instance, India lobbied for nearly 5,000 deletions, putting it well ahead of second-placed Turke…
Free stuff is always great, especially if people actually want what’s on offer. Apple now has a special section called “Free on iTunes” where you can find TV shows and music freebies if you’ve already blown through your monthly entertainment budget. …
Simply put Uber is an app for smartphones that let you summon a car to take you wherever you want to go. The company has had no shortage of bad press lately, it has even been accused to exploiting crises, mainly because of its surge pricing mechanism that bumps up prices when there’s more demand for cars. With a snowstorm expected to dump as much as two feet of snow from New York to Boston there will undoubtedly be demand for more rides, and Uber says that it will cap price surges so that riders don’t get hit with astronomical bills.
Uber’s surge pricing during Hurricane Sanday, which hit the East Coast back in 2012, brought bill shocks for many riders who didn’t think they would have to pay so much for a ride. The company later introduced alerts within its apps to warn users when surge pricing was in effect.
In an email sent to Bloomberg Uber has promised to cap dynamic pricing and that “all Uber proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross to support relief efforts.”
At a press conference yesterday New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said that “We are facing one of the largest snowstorms in the recorded history of this city,” terming the snowstorm “a serious problem.”
Public transport will be limited during this time and demand for services like Uber is going to rise. Hopefully riders won’t get bill shock this time around.

Corporations and individuals are known to contribute thousands of dollars to politicians’ campaigns which is why its not surprising at all to see politicians voting to appease their donors. Comcast may have taken it a step further. The company is reportedly writing letters for politicians that lend support to the Comcast and Time Warner merger, and those politicians are simply putting their names on the letters and sending them to the FCC.
Ever since the Comcast and TWC merger was announced strong arguments have been made by people who are for and against this marriage. Critics say that this merger is going to create a monopoly which will not be beneficial for consumers, and many consumers agree with this reasoning.
The Verge has compiled evidence to show that Comcast has been doing this. It points towards a letter sent by Roswell, Georgia mayor, Jere Wood to the FCC. The letter was actually written by Comcast’s vice president of external affairs. Wood only added a sign off line and a signature before sending it off. The Mayor has received almost $10,000 from Comcast for two campaigns.
In one instance the final touches to a letter sent by a town councilman from Jupiter, Florida were put by a former FCC official name Rosemary Harold. The councilman had previously received the letter from a Comcast official. Comcast has already tapped Harold to lobby the FCC in approving this merger.
Clearly there’s more going on behind the scenes than the public can comprehend. Time will tell if it affects the FCC’s decision on the Comcast/TWC merger.

Facebook makes it very easy to share pictures with friends and family. However the social network has often come under fire from privacy groups for its policies regarding use of user submitted content. “Reclaim Yourself” is an app that was released in December last year and all it does is add a watermark to pictures uploaded on Facebook so that they are less attractive for commercial use. Facebook has removed this app.
Reclaim Yourself was developed by a Dutch couple who say that Facebook had allowed them to launch this application last month. Now suddenly it has removed the app as well as all of the pictures that were uploaded through it.
Van Leunen, one of the developers, says a formal protest has been filed with Facebook but the social network hasn’t responded yet.
It merits mentioning here that Facebook has removed Reclaim Yourself in the days leading up to its new privacy rules that go in effect at the end of this week. The new rules give Facebook the right to “use all photographs uploaded to the site for other purposes.”
A Dutch privacy watchdog has already asked Facebook to defer its new privacy rules while it investigates who users might be impacted by the new policy. So far Facebook hasn’t said if it intends to do that.
