Here Are All The Other Times New York City Has Been 'Crippled' By Snow

Winter storm Juno could rank among New York City’s biggest snowstorms, with forecasts predicting 18-24 inches of snow.

The “crippling and potentially historic” nor’easter will move into the city late Monday, with most snow accumulation happening overnight and early Tuesday.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio urged city residents not to underestimate the storm.

“My message to all New Yorkers is, prepare for something worse than we have seen before,” said de Blasio.

New York City last saw this kind of snowfall in January 2011, when the city was blanketed with 19 inches. The largest storm on record dropped 26.9 inches of snow in just 16 hours in February 2006.

Take a look at other historic snowfalls that hit the city below:

DIY Raspberry Pi Google Calendar Display Keeps It on the Same Page

If you have a spare tablet, you can turn it into an interactive calendar just by mounting it and keeping your calendar app of choice on the screen at all times. But if all you have is a spare monitor, check out Instructables member Alex Pine’s guide. He used a Raspberry Pi and an old monitor to show his Google Calendar on his wall.

Alex loaded Raspbian on his Raspberry Pi then installed the Iceweasel browser so he could go to Google Calendar’s online page. He also tweaked Iceweasel to start automatically and at full screen. Finally Alex turned off Raspbian’s mouse cursor and sleep timer. Schedule a visit to Alex’s Instructables page for the full walkthrough.

Finally a Movie Shows How French Electronic Music Is More Than Vocoders

Thanks to Daft Punk, the 1990s French “touch” electronic music scene has its legendary figures, masks and vocoder robot voices and button pushing and all. We’ve got the sound and look, but seriously, we’re missing a little fiction to glorify the music’s rise into one of the more influential electronic music movements ever.

CERN Wants Artists and Architects Working Alongside Its Physicists

What do art and high-energy physics have in common? Quite a bit, if you think about it: Space, time, and the structure of the visible and invisible world, for starters. That’s why CERN has spent the past four years inviting artists into its headquarters, and why, for the first time, it’s now inviting an architect to stay.

Scientists Can Now Unboil Eggs to Hopefully Make Cancer Drugs Cheaper

It sounds like research that doesn’t have much more of a practical application than making people say “neat,” but chemists at UC Irvine have figured out a way to unboil egg whites—turning them from a solid back into a liquid—and the process behind it promises to help lower the production cost of cancer drugs and other expensive medications.

Freewheel is Cablevision's WiFi calling service for thrifty New Yorkers

In large metropolitan areas that are covered with WiFi, you might start to wonder why you pay for a cellular service at all. It’s this germ of an idea that has inspired Cablevision to announce Freewheel: a WiFi-based phone service that offers unlimit…

Cablevision Launches Freewheel Wi-Fi Only Phone Service

freewheel-launch

We tend to conserve our mobile data where possible and use Wi-Fi instead. There are some companies out there that want to bring customers over to Wi-Fi for their phone call needs as well, ending their reliance on traditional mobile carriers. Cablevision, a cable provider, has now joined the list of such companies. Today it announced Freewheel which is a Wi-Fi only phone service that’s light on the pocket.

Cablevision is the first cable provider to introduce an all Wi-Fi phone service in the country. It provides unlimited data, talk and text exclusively over Wi-Fi. It will work anywhere in the world whereas Wi-Fi connection is available and will operate only when the device is connected to a wireless network.

All Freewheel customers will be able to automatically access Optimum Wi-Fi network that covers over 1.1 million hotspots. Potential customers interested in trying this service out can sign up for Freewheel next month through its website. The service costs $29.95 for everyone while Cablevision Optimum Online customers only have to pay $9.95 per month.

There are no annual contracts. Freewheel is exclusively available on the Motorola Moto G which is being offered at a discounted price of $99.95.

The obvious drawbacks of this service is that it isn’t useful at all in locations where there’s no Wi-Fi network, like on the subway, so keep that in mind before you say goodbye to a traditional mobile carrier.

Refreshed Xiaomi Redmi 2 Spotted At TENAA

redmi-2-tenaaXiaomi has been pretty successful in the previous years where their smartphone efforts are concerned, and it does not look as though the company is about to slow down anytime soon. In fact, the company has seen successes in the mould of the Xiaomi Redmi 1S, the Redmi Note and the Redmi 2. The Redmi 2 occupies the sweet spot for many a person, being easy on the budget (relatively speaking, of course) at approximately $100 a pop – not to mention offering a fair amount of hardware firepower in the process. Well, there are now whispers going on that there will be an updated version in the pipeline, which one will obviously have to take with a pinch of salt at the moment.

The original Redmi 2 will run on a 64-bit quad-core Snapdragon 410 chipset, where it is accompanied by the likes of 8GB of internal memory, a 4.7” HD display, 1GB RAM, and LTE connectivity thrown into the mix as well. On TENAA, however, which so happens to be the Chinese equivalent of the FCC, there seems to be a new and improved model – which will not veer too far away from its predecessor in terms of design, but rather, the changes are internal. We are talking about having 2GB RAM, as well as doubling of the internal memory at 16GB.

Apart from those changes, everything else more or less looks the same – now all that is required would be a little bit of patience.

First 20th Anniversary PS4 Unit Sold For $130,000

ps4 20th

A couple of months back Sony unveiled the 20th Anniversary edition PlayStation 4. This limited edition production run of the console was meant to celebrate two decades of Sony’s gaming platform. Only 12,300 units were produced and as expected they were quickly picked up by enthusiasts, as well as scalpers, who then sold the units online for eye-watering profits. Sony auctioned the very first of these limited edition units and raised around $130,000.

The 20th Anniversary edition PlayStation 4 comes with the gray color scheme of the original PlayStation console. Other than that there’s nothing different about this console and the one you can purchase from a variety of retailers.

Sony put up the first unit, with serial number 00001 of 12,300, for sale online through Yahoo Auctions in Japan. The first bids were received earlier this week. A bidding war played out for a few days before someone finally secured the winning bid. ¥15,135,000, about $130,000, was the price paid by someone in Japan for this unique console.

The company conducted this exercise for a good cause. All of the money raised in this auction is going to be donated to Save The Children Japan.

A representative for Sony said that the company appreciates all those who participated in the auction, and is “surprised at the highest bid price, which was higher than our expectations.”
