Facebook Lite For Android Launched, Targets Emerging Markets

Facebook-liteNot all Android phones are created equal, especially if you’re in an emerging market and where the priority is cost, not so much whether its display is made from Gorilla Glass 4 or sapphire. It also means that your hardware might not be as powerful, or OEMs turn to cheaper brands which might not be as good.

This also means that your experience in running apps will differ from someone with a high-end device. However it looks like Facebook has taken that into consideration and has since launched a “lite” version of their Facebook app on mobile devices. The new Facebook Lite app has been launched and designed to run on low-end phones and markets that still largely rely on 2G networks.

Interestingly enough Facebook has yet to officially announce the app which was actually released on the 20th of January. The app is currently only available in markets such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Zimbabwe. It weighs about 252KB in terms of download size and has apparently been optimized for slower networks.

It is also said to be efficient in terms of consuming mobile data which is actually a good thing as there are still some markets in which data is still priced at a premium. For those interested in checking out the app or seeing more screenshots, you can head on over to its Google Play Store listing for the details.

WhatsApp Calls Could Be Coming Soon, Reference Spotted In Latest Update

whatsapp callsThere have been various hints that WhatsApp could be gaining voice calling functionality but until now we have yet to see the feature launch. Last we heard it would only arrive in 2015, but when exactly? Early? Middle? Late? Well for those hoping it would be early, you could get your wish, thanks to a sighting of a folder in the latest build of WhatsApp for Android.

This was spotted by a Reddit user who found a folder called “WhatsApp Calls” which you can see in the screenshot above. While we suppose it could really be for just about anything, there is a good chance that the folder could be meant for files related to the voice calling feature. While the feature was not spotted in the latest update, the fact that the folder appeared could be a sign that WhatsApp is getting ready.

Previously we had seen icons that suggested that the feature was on its way, so we guess the appearance of the folder would bring us one step closer. Unfortunately we still have no idea as to when the feature will actually surface, so we guess we will just have to remain patient for now. In the meantime for those who need voice calling features, apps such as Viber, Skype, Facebook Messenger, LINE, and so on are good and viable alternatives, which actually leaves WhatsApp as one of the few remaining messaging apps to not have it.

Panasonic Rulo robot vacuum cleans even unreachable corners

rulo-1Robot vacuum cleaners seem to be going through a shape evolution. Them some got classier and started sporting a more industrial, box-type body. Now someone is trying to go with a triangle. Yes, Pananosic’s upcoming Rulo robot … Continue reading

Turkish Court Orders Facebook To Block Pages Insulting Mohammad: Reports

ANKARA (Reuters) – A Turkish court has ordered Facebook to block a number of pages deemed insulting to the Prophet Mohammad, threatening to stop access to the whole social networking site if it does not comply, local media reported.

The order made by the court on Sunday followed a request by a prosecutor, state broadcaster TRT reported. No one from Facebook was immediately available for comment.

It was the latest move to crack down on material seen as offending religious sensibilities in the largely Muslim nation, where the government of President Tayyip Erdogan is seen pursuing an Islamist-leaning agenda.

Earlier this month, prosecutors launched an inquiry into a newspaper which reprinted parts of the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo in the wake of an attack by Islamic militants on its offices in Paris.
