Nexus Player Now Available From Retailers

google-nexus-player-hands-on-2

The Nexus Player was the first retail device powered by Android TV. This set-top box has been manufactured by ASUS and it runs on the relatively new platform from Google that’s aimed at taking over your living room. This device has only been sold through the Google Play Store ever since it was launched but that changes today. The Nexus Player is now available through U.S. retailers. Amazon, Newegg and Best Buy have the device in stock.

Both Amazon and Newegg will be selling the Nexus Player online only but retail chain Best Buy is going to have the device in stock at stores as well.

So there are multiple options now for customers who don’t want to purchase this device from Google Play Store. Customers looking to purchase from Amazon should keep in mind that the Nexus Player is being sold by third-party sellers at a higher price with no Amazon Prime shipping.

Best Buy is selling it for the right price, $99.99, but isn’t offering shipping right now and will only let customers pick it up in stores. Only Newegg is offering the same price with free standard shipping. Both retailers have the $39.99 Bluetooth gamepad from ASUS in stock as well which is required for playing games on an Android TV device.

Its likely that the Nexus Player will be available at even more retailers down the line so there will be plenty of locations to pick it up from in the near future.

eSight Glasses Let Blind Mother See Her Newborn For The First Time

mother-blind-sees-baby-electronic-eyesA blind mother was able to see her newborn son for the first time thanks to a pair of special glasses. The eSight glasses capture an image and video and then present it in real time with enhancements for people with low vision. These enhancements make the eye perceive more than it would have otherwise been able to.

The woman, 29-year old Kathy Beitz, started losing her sight in grade school. She has Stargardt disease which is a genetic condition which causes macular degeneration. In a nutshell the condition puts up a blind spot that obscures most of her vision.

Speaking to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Beitz said that if she were looking at a person she wouldn’t see their head and shoulders, “I don’t see any of that,” she says.

That changed when she put on a pair of eSight glasses. She tells the CBC that she will never forget seeing her newborn son for the first time. “I remember his little mouth and his gums and his itsy bitsy tongue when he would cry.”

She now uses the glasses to care for her child. A spokesman for eSight explained how these glasses work and the fact that they have been available in the market for about a year now. A pair costs around $15,000. [photo/video credit: Canadian Broadcasting Corporation]

Homeworld Remastered Collection Release Date Confirmed

homeworld-remastered-collection

Today we finally have a confirmation on the Homeworld Remastered Collection release date. This new title is a revamped version of the first two installments in this popular strategy series. Gearbox Software not only confirmed the title’s release date today but also as promised it showed off some gameplay footage as well earlier today at the Inside Gearbox Software Panel that’s taking place at PAX South.

Both Homeworld and Homeworld 2 are included in Homeworld Remastered Collection. For this remastered version Gearbox worked with main members of the original development team at Relic and even brought “passionate” fans into the process.

It brings new voice recordings from the original cast, a fully remastered score as well as improved graphics. Compatibility updates for the original versions of both games are included in this title as well.

Gearbox demonstrated the changes at PAX South by running both the old and the remastered versions side by side. Evidently there’s a lot more detail to be found in the remastered version, space looks lovelier, and battlegrounds more vibrant.

Gearbox also confirmed today that development work on Homeworld Shipbreakers is underway with the folks at Blackbird Interactive, it was first announced back in 2013 as a prequel to the first game.

Homeworld Remastered Collection will be released for PC on February 25th. It will be available from Steam for $34.99.

Office 2016 Release Slated For Later This Year

office16

Many have been waiting on Microsoft to confirm when it is going to release the next version of its productivity suite for desktop PCs. Microsoft has confirmed that the next version will be called Office 2016. It has also said that we should expect the Office 2016 release to take place later this year.

Microsoft dominated the news cycle on January 21st as it unveiled the consumer version of Windows 10. It showed off the new web browser its building, Windows 10 for smartphones and tablets, as well as the much awaited touch-based version of Office. Microsoft also showed off an innovative product called HoloLens.

Though at the event Microsoft didn’t show off the desktop Office 2016 applications. One might have expected it to but that didn’t happen. What the company did say later through an update on the official Office blog is that it will share more regarding Office 2016 “in the coming months.”

As far as the release date is concerned Microsoft says that users should expect it to arrive “in the second half of 2015.” Presumably the Office 2016 release will be timed with Windows 10 release. The latest iteration of Microsoft’s operating system is going to be a free upgrade during the first year.

Windows 10 is going to be released later this year though Microsoft hasn’t provided an exact date as yet.

Sports Illustrated Will Run Edgy Domestic Violence Ad Ahead Of Super Bowl

After initially rejecting an edgy advertisement about domestic violence in the National Football League, Sports Illustrated magazine has decided to run the ad on its website Thursday, just a few days before the Super Bowl.

The ad, created by the progressive advocacy group Ultraviolet, includes a dramatic video of a uniformed football player tackling a woman without a helmet. The video notes that 55 domestic abuse cases in the NFL have gone unanswered under the leadership of league commissioner Roger Goodell, and it ends with the hashtag “#GOODELLMUSTGO.”

Ultraviolet’s five-figure online ad campaign also includes banner ads with the same domestic violence statistic and hashtag.

Sports Illustrated initially rejected the ad, telling Ultraviolet this week that the editorial team made the decision to not run it based on its messaging.

After The Huffington Post reached out to Sports Illustrated on Friday to inquire about that decision, a spokesman said the magazine had mistakenly rejected the ads and will now be running them on Thursday, ahead of the Super Bowl.

“While this specific campaign had two components — banner and flash — only the banner ad was reviewed due to a minor technical glitch,” said spokesman Scott Novak. “The banner ad we felt could be mistaken for our editorial stance. If there is going to be an opinion on the matter we prefer to let our writers and editors take ownership of those opinions.”

Sports Illustrated’s editorial staff has extensively covered the issue of domestic violence in the NFL. The issue gained national attention last year after Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice knocked his then-fiancee unconscious in an elevator and was suspended for only two games.

Novak said Sports Illustrated’s editorial team is now fine with the content of the ad campaign, after seeing the video. “Our thanks is to the person who raised the issue whereupon we discovered the misunderstanding,” he said. “With the full context of both components, we approved it and worked with the client to get it scheduled.”

Nita Chaudhary, the founder of Ultraviolet, applauded the magazine’s decision.

“We are thrilled that public scrutiny has persuaded Sports Illustrated to reverse their decision on our ads addressing the NFL’s domestic violence problem,” Chaudhary said. “The issue is and always has been that an astonishing 55 cases of domestic violence have gone unanswered under Commissioner Roger Goodell’s tenure at the NFL. Going into Super Bowl Sunday, we cannot allow the issue of domestic violence to be swept under the rug.”

Martin Luther King Jr. Would Be 'Mortified' By The Gay Marriage Movement, Gary Bauer Claims

Conservative activist and former Republican presidential hopeful Gary Bauer believes that Martin Luther King Jr. would not have supported same-sex marriage rights.

“There is nothing in the Constitution of the United States that says that same-sex marriage has to be the law of the land,” Bauer, who is the president of American Values and former president of the conservative Family Research Council, told Matthew Hagee on a Jan. 20 installment of “The Hagee Hotline,” Right Wing Watch first reported.

Comparing marriage equality to abortion rights, he added, “I think we’ve seen is the concept of civil rights being hijacked by all kinds of people who, I believe, if Martin Luther King [Jr.} were alive today, he would be mortified by.” He went on to note, “I think Dr. King, being a pastor, would’ve certainly understood the biblical definition of marriage, and I think he would’ve been a powerful voice … for strengthening the family, for the need for children to be raised with mothers and fathers.”

Bauer’s remarks are in line with those he gave in a 2012 SiriusXM OutQ radio interview.

“The goal of the gay rights movement is to take a state that has same-sex marriage and to use that state as a battering ram and a lawsuit before the Supreme Court to force every state to have same sex marriage,” he said at the time.

Although questions over what King’s stance on the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community would have been have long divided his family and followers, Coretta Scott King was an outspoken LGBT rights advocate before her death in 2006.

“Gay and lesbian people have families, and their families should have legal protection, whether by marriage or civil union,” King’s widow told USA Today in 2004. “A constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages is a form of gay bashing and it would do nothing at all to protect traditional marriages.”

Henry The Dog Was Allegedly Left For 7 Days In A Cage With A Broken Back. Here's His Second Chance.

It’s hard to think of this little terrier as lucky, until you know how things might have turned out for him.

Henry was rescued out of a Jacksonville, Texas, animal shelter, where he’d been taken in as a stray. Animal control brought the dog to the designated location after he was hit by a truck. Cindy Nash, founder of Nicholas Pet Haven, came for him on a Thursday in mid-January after seeing his photo on the department’s Facebook page.

Convinced the pup belonged to someone, Nash figured she’d get Henry groomed then go on the hunt for his owner. She knew his legs were hurt, but she didn’t know the extent of his injuries.

Veterinarian Dr. Gary Spence later confirmed the dog’s back was broken. He gave Henry pain medication and steroids, then sent him to Texas A&M for surgery and further treatment, which, fortunately, seems to be working.

He told KLTV it was “obvious no care was given to” Henry at the shelter. The pup was allegedly left for a week in a urine- and feces-filled cage with an untreated broken back.

But Henry’s fate could’ve been worse.

Henry was saved just before the director of the Klein Animal Shelter was arrested and charged with animal cruelty. Spence, who examined the shelter after the arrest, found two freezers full of recently euthanized animals.

“It was really shocking,” he told NBC affiliate KETK. “These animals hadn’t even begun to freeze. There are so many in there that it’s probably going to take a week for those animals to freeze.”

An investigation into allegations against the shelter is currently underway. The good news is there’s hope that the remaining animals will go on to live better lives.

That includes Henry.

On Friday, Spence told HuffPost that Henry was looking “bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.” In fact, the vet — whose clinic has a cat and duck duo that hangs around the lobby — said there’s a possibility Henry may even walk again.

“You’ve got to wait and see, and give mother nature the benefit of the doubt,” he says.

Nash is also feeling optimistic. A foster family has been lined up for Henry upon his release from the hospital.

Once he’s fully recovered, this special dog will be looking for a home for good. Nash says any future owner should have a wheelchair ramp, in case Henry needs help moving around, and be ready to give him everything he needs.

“It will take someone with a lot of dedication to take care of him,” she said. “We’re going to be looking for the perfect person.”

Nicholas Pet Haven has set up a YouCaring page for people who want to contribute to Henry’s care. Keep tabs on Henry, and find out more about taking in a foster pet, on the Nicholas Pet Haven Facebook page.

'Saturday Night Live' Reveals Who's Really Behind Deflategate In Cold Open

Tom Brady and the New England Patriots’ “deflategate” press conference on Thursday was pretty funny on its own, but the “Saturday Night Live” take on the football scandal was even more ridiculous.

The “SNL” cold open was a parody of an “Inside The NFL” segment, in which Patriots coach Bill Belichick quickly denied any knowledge of altered footballs from the AFC championship game before throwing quarterback Tom Brady “under the bus.”

“I love him like a son, just more of an estranged son that I wouldn’t trust around footballs,” Belichick (played by Beck Bennett) told the reporters.

Brady (portrayed by Taran Killam) played dumb at the conference, saying that any knowledge about the footballs is “above his pay grade.”

“Look, all I know is that a football is a pigskin, so I just assumed that the air in the football is how much air was inside the pig when it died,” he said.

The sketch ultimately revealed the truth behind the alleged cheating scandal when Patriots “assistant equipment co-manager” Dougie Spoons took the stage. Watch the full clip above.
