Shannon Conley Sentenced For Trying To Help ISIS

DENVER (AP) — A 19-year-old suburban Denver woman who tried to go to Syria to help Islamic State militants has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Shannon Conley learned her punishment in Denver federal court on Friday as her parents watched.

Wearing a black and tan headscarf with her jail uniform, she tearfully told the judge that she has disavowed jihad and that the people who influenced her misconstrued the Quran.

Conley pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization in September under a deal that requires her to divulge information she may have about other Americans with similar intentions.

FBI agents say Conley wanted to marry a suitor she met online who told her he was fighting with the extremists. She repeatedly told them she wanted to fight alongside him or use her skills as a nurse’s aide to help.

Judge Raymond Moore said the sentence was meant to deter others with similar intentions. Earlier in the hearing he expressed doubt that Conley had disavowed jihad, pointing to a letter she wrote to a friend from jail in which she ridiculed other inmates for denouncing terrorism.

He also said Conley has a history of defiance that has played out in the case and that she needs mental help.

“Defiance has been a part of her fabric for a long time. She has been defiant before this,” the judge said. “This is not the exceptional act. This is Shannon being defiant yet again.”

Conley could have faced up to five years in federal prison after pleading guilty to trying to help Islamic State militants, but her sentence depended at least in part on how helpful she was to authorities still investigating her case and others like it.

Authorities became aware of Conley’s growing interest in extremism in November 2013 after she started talking about terrorism with employees of a suburban Denver church. They had seen her wandering around and taking notes on the layout of the campus, according to court documents.

FBI agents met repeatedly with Conley starting in late 2013 hoping to dissuade her from leaving, suggesting she pursue humanitarian work instead. But she told them she was intent on waging jihad in the Middle East, even though she knew it was illegal, according to court documents. She believed it was her only answer to correcting what she saw as wrongs perpetrated against the Muslim world.

Dedicated 'Humans Of New York' Fans Raise Money To Send Underserved Kids On Harvard Visit

Humans of New York (HONY) photographer Brandon Stanton is known for capturing incredible stories that move his viewers. And now, his audience is helping to give some of his subjects amazing opportunities.

Money from HONY fans is pouring in to send kids from a Brooklyn school to visit Harvard. The donation deluge came in after Stanton posted a photo to his blog earlier this week, featuring a boy who cited his principal as the most influential figure in his life. Their school is in Brownsville, an east Brooklyn neighborhood with one of the highest crime rates in New York City.

He told Stanton:

“Who’s influenced you the most in your life?”
“My principal, Ms. Lopez.”
“How has she influenced you?”
“When we get in trouble, she doesn’t suspend us. She calls us to her office and explains to us how society was built down around us. And she tells us that each time somebody fails out of school, a new jail cell gets built. And one time she made every student stand up, one at a time, and she told each one of us that we matter.”

The HONY photographer did some further investigating and met up with the principal, Nadia Lopez, along with her vice-principal, Ms. Achu, at Mott Hall Bridges Academy. The principal told Stanton about her vision for her students.

“I want every child who enters my school to know that they can go anywhere, and that they will belong,” Lopez told Stanton for her photograph, according to the HONY Instagram page.

To show the students the wealth of possibility outside the classroom, the three decided to raise enough money to take incoming sixth grade classes on a trip to Harvard. While the photographer set up a crowdfund on Thursday with the goal of raising $100,000 for the school, his fans eagerly answered the call, and surpassed it within a few hours. By the next day, compassionate donors had raised more than three times the original goal — enough to make the trip a permanent part of the academy’s curriculum.

Lopez said every bit of encouragement helps motivate students.

This is a neighborhood that doesn’t necessarily expect much from our children, so at Mott Hall Bridges Academy we set our expectations very high. We don’t call the children ‘students,’ we call them ‘scholars,’” Lopez told Stanton. “When you tell people you’re from Brownsville, their face cringes up. But there are children here that need to know that they are expected to succeed.”

Lopez hopes that the generosity from the online community will also help ensure a safer environment for students to play over the summer. Any funds raised beyond the $350,000 mark, will possibly create a summer program for kids where kids can feel safe — which doesn’t currently exist, according to the HONY Instagram.

Just last Saturday, one of my scholars had two guns pulled on him while he was walking to the community center. In broad daylight. It’s just too dangerous to be outside, so my scholars stay inside all summer,” she said, according to the HONY instagram. “I need the funds to put together a program with my own teachers so my students have a safe place where they can continue to grow outside of school.”

As of Friday night, HONY fans had already donated $20,000 to the summer program, which costs $40,000 a year, according to the HONY Instagram.

Steve King: I Was Being 'Kind' By Referring To Obama's Guest As 'A Deportable'

DES MOINES, Iowa — Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) said Friday that he was being “kind and gentle” when he referred to Michelle Obama’s guest at the State of the Union address, a 21-year-old undocumented immigrant, as “a deportable.”

King, known for outlandish statements against immigration reform, said he borrowed the language from a U.S. federal statute, 8 U.S. Code § 1227, which stipulates the “classes of deportable aliens” who may be removed from the country by the attorney general. King argued that he used that language because pro-immigration activists have “conflated the term illegal immigrant with the term immigrant.”

“I decided I’m going to soften my language a little bit, and I did, and they’re still offended,” King said in an interview with WHO, an Iowa radio station.

Democrats sought to tie the remark, which the tea party congressman tweeted on Tuesday night, to several potential 2016 Republican presidential contenders who are scheduled to address a gathering of social conservatives in Des Moines on Saturday.

The Iowa Freedom Summit, hosted annually by King, marks an unofficial start to the GOP primary season. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Sen. Ted Cruz, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson are slated to attend.

In his interview on Friday, King brushed off critics who said that he was being insensitive to Dreamers, or young undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children.

“They try to figure out what is it that they can hyperventilate about,” King said. “They want to live in a perpetual state of outrage. They’re constantly scanning something they can be outraged against.”

Sam Gene Harris Arrested After 34 Years On The Lam

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Police in Utah say they’ve arrested a man who escaped from a Mississippi jail 34 years ago.

Authorities said Friday that 61-year-old Sam Gene Harris also escaped from jails in Oregon before landing in the small central Utah town of Wellington several years ago. Carbon County Sheriff Jeff Wood says Harris has used at least 10 different aliases and also has a criminal history in Florida and Georgia.

Wood says an FBI bulletin tipped off Utah police to his identity. They arrested Harris as he walked back to his house Thursday.

Authorities say Harris was serving a four-year sentence for shoplifting and possession of burglary tools when he escaped in 1980. He will be extradited to Mississippi.

No attorney was immediately listed for Harris in court records, and his phone number was not publicly available.

Android 5.0 For LG G3 In The US Coming Soon

lg g3 lollipopBack in October 2014, we had heard from LG that the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the LG G3 would be arriving soon. Well the good news for LG G3 owners in the US is that it looks like your wait could soon be coming to an end. According to LG USA’s Twitter account, they have announced that Android 5.0 Lollipop would be arriving soon.

We suppose this is just another reminder that the update would be headed our way, but unfortunately LG USA did not mention when exactly we could expect the update to be released. Tne Android 5.0 Lollipop update has been released in countries/regions like the UK and in Europe, so we reckon it shouldn’t take too long before it is released stateside.

However a stateside release also means that it would have to go through carrier approval first, so when exactly you will get the update will also depend on how long it takes for the carrier to approve it. In the meantime for those who just can’t wait around for the update, there are alternative methods of getting Android 5.0 which is to flash an Android 5.0-based ROM, like CyanogenMod. Either way do check back with us at a later date for the details.

Sprint Tempts T-Mobile Customers With Trade-Ins And Credit

Sprint-signIt seems that T-Mobile has a knack for getting on everyone’s nerves, especially when they are competitors that they at one point in time was interested in merging with. We have seen AT&T and T-Mobile bicker and try to steal each other’s customers in the past, and now it looks like there is no love lost between T-Mobile and Sprint as well.

Sprint has recently announced their latest offer in a bid to try steal customers over from T-Mobile’s network. The offer will basically see the carrier offer T-Mobile customers a minimum value of $200 when trading in their smartphone, which is on top of the extra $350 in credit they would get if they were to make the switch from T-Mobile to Sprint.

The carrier is also boasting and targeting T-Mobile specifically and comparing rates, claiming that what they offer is cheaper than what T-Mobile has to offer. According to Chad Lander, director of Sprint’s buyback and phone trade-in program, “Our industry-leading program gives customers a clear and immediate financial incentive to turn in their old phone. We’re able to target customers, like those from T-Mobile, offset any termination fees, and provide a far superior offering.”

This offer is unfortunately not permanent so if you’re a T-Mobile subscriber looking to take advantage of Sprint’s offer, you will have to move fast as this deal is only good until the 9th of April.

Samsung To Use Own Camera Module For The Galaxy S6 [Rumor]

samsung-galaxy-s5-review-026When it comes to camera modules in smartphones, Sony is actually doing pretty well for themselves in that regard. They have made modules used in Apple’s iPhone lineup, as well as Samsung’s Galaxy S-lineup as well, but if the rumors are to be believed, it looks like Samsung and Sony could be parting ways with the Galaxy S6.

According to previous rumors of the Galaxy S6, the handset is said to come with a 20MP rear-facing camera with optical image stabilization. However it also seems that instead of going with a Sony camera module for the Galaxy S6, Samsung is instead expected to use their own technology for the Galaxy S6’s camera.

Does this sound like a stretch? Definitely not. In the past we have heard how Samsung is working on their own 20MP module, so it wouldn’t really be that big of a surprise if Samsung were to turn to their own company for camera parts, rather than paying a competitor like Sony for it.

Of course the quality of Samsung’s camera module remains to be seen, especially since Sony’s has been pretty reliable. We reckon it would be a gamble especially if things don’t work out for Samsung, but either way hopefully we will learn more about this at MWC 2015, but until then do take it with a grain of salt for now.
