AT&T’s Samsung Galaxy Alpha Obtains New Software Update

samsung galaxy alphaThe Samsung Galaxy Alpha which was released to the masses in August last year has now received a spanking new software update – if you happen to be rocking to the particular model that hails from AT&T, of course. This particular handset is a start from Samsung, which underlines their intention to the rest of the world that they are pretty much capable of working with metal just as well as with plastic as the smartphone’s material of choice. There is still plastic in the Galaxy Alpha, make no mistake about it, but it does sport a sturdy metal frame which will make it have that premium feel and look to it.

Unfortunately, the latest software update for the Galaxy Alpha has nothing to do with the long awaited Android 5.0 Lollipop version, but rather, this Over The Air (OTA) update will see the software version get a bump to G850AUCU1ANL1, which will weigh in at a mere 17MB. Now that is a rather small update when you think about it, and it should not be too much to ask for you to download it via your data plan rather than rely on a Wi-Fi connection. Your handset will remain at Android 4.4.4 KitKat, too. Do expect that Samsung calls “user experience enhancements” with this update.

Yureka Yu Sold Out In A Matter Of Seconds

yureka-yu-soldoutIt seems that there is some sort of bragging right to be owned if you happen to sell out your device within a certain number of seconds over here in Asia. Perhaps it has to do with the image of a particular device being deemed to be desirable. Well, it seems that the Yureka Yu has another bit of news that might capture your attention – the batch of 15,000 phones has been claimed to take just 4 seconds to sell out, according to parent company Micromax.

In the past, the anticipation for the Yureka Yu smartphone saw the Amazon.in store in which it was offered at crash upon launch. It seems that history did not repeat itself this time around, since no such issues were reported in the first place. It seems that there is yet another batch which is being prepared for another launch later in the following week, which will walk in the footsteps of the similar registration-based model. This particular sales will happen on January 29 at 2pm, and those who are interested will be able to register themselves from 5pm today.

It remains to be seen just how many of the Yureka Yu handsets will be made available in the next round of sales though, but chances are we might see another one digit sell out phenomenon.

Huawei Mate 8 Could Be Arriving Soon

huawei-mate8-leakIt was not too long ago that we brought you word on how Huawei is looking into dropping the Ascend sub-brand altogether where Android-powered devices are concerned, and hence, chances are we might not very well see the Ascend name in the new successor of the Ascend Mate 7 phablet, where it would very well be known as the Huawei Mate 8. Pretty plain, but it does have a decent ring to it, don’t you think so? Well, a new image of the alleged Huawei Mate 8 has surfaced onto the Internet, in which you will be able to see above, but one ought to take the leaked image with a pinch of salt, as with any other rumors out there.

It does look as though the shot on the alleged Huawei Mate 8’s back does seem to be similar to a leak that happened last December, which was then claimed to be the upcoming Ascend 7 Plus. Well, if this were to be the successor to the Ascend Mate 7, then it would not be too much of a surprise to see rather similar design cues to the entire shebang, although there seems to be a far larger speaker grille located at the back. In terms of its hardware specifications, there is nothing at this point in time to work with.

Meizu M1 Mini To Feature Trio Of OSes?

m1-mini-os-variantMeizu has already introduced the very first member of its new M1 Note device, not too long ago, and there has been whispers of a new M1 Mini going around, and we do not know whether this can be known as the Blue Charm Mini or not. While there are plenty of whispers going around that the Meizu M1 Mini were to be introduced on January 28 later this month in a special event. Additional alleged details on the upcoming smartphone have leaked out, where it claims to come with a 5” touchscreen display instead of a 4.7” screen.

The pixel count would remain the same – at 720p, of course. At the back, there will be a 13MP camera with an accompanying LED flash. As for the asking price of the Meizu M1 Mini, it will probably be strategically positioned in order to come up against Xiaomi’s best selling Redmi line. Word has it that the Meizu M1 Mini will be sold for a mere CNY 799, and if you were to convert it at the prevailing exchange rates, it will be somewhere in the realm of $128.

Chances are there is a trio of versions for this particular handset, where one of them will run on Flyme OS, which is Meizu’s very own interpretation of Android, while another will make use of YunOS, which was developed in part by Alibaba, as well as the final variant will run on the Ubuntu platform.

Purple Sony Xperia Z3 Debuts In Hong Kong

hk-xperia-z3-purpleMuch has been said and done about an upcoming purple colored Sony Xperia Z3. Well, it looks like all of your patience will finally pay off, as this particularly well shaded version of the current Sony flagship smartphone has made its bow over in Hong Kong. Of course, other than the external change in terms of color, everything else about this purple clad Sony Xperia Z3 will remain the same underneath the hood. No doubt this handset was released to target a niche market, since not everyone would want to pay for something that will become outdated not to long down the road with Sony touted to prepare the road for the Sony Xperia Z4.

It remains to be seen whether the purple Sony Xperia Z3 will be sold elsewhere outside of Hong Kong though, so we will have to wait and see. At the end of this month, the Sony Xperia Z3 in purple will be sold, priced at HKD 4,998, which would translate to approximately $644 (or €567 if you happen to live across the pond) – unlocked, of course.

Well, I suppose those who are more concerned with aesthetics and are not too bothered with having the latest and the greatest might want to opt for this release.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 To Obtain Snapdragon 410 Chipset?

tab4-8-androidThe Samsung Galaxy Tab series range has not managed to cross over to the world of 64-bit chipsets, but it seems that all of that will change with word going around that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 will be on the receiving end of a Snapdragon 410-based refresh in due time. In fact, this particular chipset has already seen action in a handful of its Galaxy A devices, in addition to a slew of other devices. Apart from the possible change in its chipset, nothing else looked to have been altered. How do we know of this upcoming chipset refresh? GFX Bench, of course.

GFX Bench has details on a 1,280 x 800 pixel display, where the tablet will be accompanied by the likes of 1.5GB RAM as well as 16GB of internal memory. Not only that, it will come equipped with a quad-core Cortex A53 and Adreno 306 setup, and if you were looking forward to Android 5.0 Lollipop, you would be disappointed, as it will arrive with Android 4.4.4 KitKat right out of the box.

Other than that, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 will arrive with a 3.15MP camera located at the back, allowing one to capture video in 720p resolution, while the front-facing camera packs a 1.2MP sensor. There will be no NFC support and mobile connectivity, although Snapdragon 410 does offer a similar 150Mbps LTE speed of its 32-bit predecessor just in case there is an LTE version down the road.

Unofficial Image Hints At Possible Call Of Duty Title

may4-teaserCall of Duty is one gaming franchise that has made it big, and it seems as though each title released under that banner has done extremely well for itself in the market. Well, it seems that there has been an unofficial image which has appeared, dropping a hint that it might very well have something to do with the upcoming entry over in the Call of Duty series.

Xbox community manager Raj Patel was the one who tweeted the above image which you can see, where he decided to play the devil’s advocate by throwing in a rather cryptic message that reads “Hmm…”. If one were to translate the Morse code found in the image, it would read “Presented by Xbox, 10 am PDT/1 pm EST May 4th 2015.” The first week of May happens to be the time window in which Activision normally makes an announcement of its Call of Duty plans for the upcoming year, and this is more often than not be done with some help from Microsoft.

If history were to be studied, the Advanced Warfare reveal happened on May 2 last year, while Call of Duty: Ghosts was announced on May 1 in 2013. Patel did clarify, however, that the image was “unofficial.” He tweeted,”Earlier I posted an unofficial (not from Xbox) image to see what others think of it, not as an endorsement or tease. Sorry for any confusion.”

eBay To Slash 7% Of Workforce

ebay-jobs-cutTimes are hard all over the world, with natural disasters, aircraft crashes, an unstable economy – making the world eke out a living, hand to mouth. Hence, job security is another thing that many of us would like to have, but the tech industry seems to be a more volatile one as opposed to, say, working in the government. Online retail giant eBay will be letting go of 2,400 people – which would make up 7% of their workforce in the existing quarter as it goes through a restructuring exercise while making plans to spin off its PayPal finance unit.

This announcement was made in conjunction with seeing its profit in the fourth quarter rise to touch $936 million, running on the back of a revenue of $4.9 billion. The job cuts will affect three divisions of eBay – Marketplaces, Enterprise and PayPal.

Such a reorganization exercise will see eBay return to its roots with the “Marketplaces” division, where it will also comprise of auctions and online retail sales, which make up close to half of its revenues last year.

eBay mentioned, “We will be simplifying organizational structures to focus the businesses and ensure that we are set up to compete and win.” Playing it safe, eh? Good luck to those who will be let go – hopefully you will be able to find another job soon.
