Lumia Camera App Is The Default Camera App On Windows 10 Hardware

windows10-free-upgradeJust in case you were wondering, Windows 10 is the flavor of the day. This time around, we have more details on the Lumia Camera app, where it is touted to be the default camera app where Windows 10 hardware is concerned. You know, the Lumia Camera app which came as part of the recent Lumia Denim update, and being the default camera app across a slew of Windows 10 devices, it would mean that having a Samsung or HTC device that runs on Windows 10 would offer you a similar photography experience as that on a regular Lumia – high end or otherwise, in terms of software capability and image editing purposes. Of course, the sensor used on the individual smartphone’s camera would deliver contrasting results, depending on the quality of the hardware.

In other words, the Lumia Camera app would allow one to snap a photo with flash and without, before making adjustments to its brightness level so that it will end up somewhere right smack in between, should neither result end up looking what you had in mind originally. Not only that, there will also be an auto-HDR feature for video recording enthusiasts. Sounds like a whole lot of fun, don’t you think so? We cannot wait for Windows 10 to arrive on our hardware across all platforms.

2 Deaths Reported At Walt Disney World, Including Guest Who Rode It's A Small World

Two guests died after going on rides at Walt Disney World in Florida in recent months, including a woman who lost consciousness on Christmas after riding the iconic it’s a small world attraction at the Magic Kingdom, according to state documents cited by the Orlando Sentinel.

The other victim, a 54-year-old woman, lost consciousness after riding Toy Story Midway Mania at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The Sentinel reports that this is the first time Disney has reported the deaths of two guests in the same quarter since 2007.

It’s not clear when the women died, and no cause of death was listed. However, Disney said both attractions were operating normally at the time of the incidents and an observer cited by the paper said it’s unlikely that the rides contributed to either death.

It’s a small world is a gentle boat ride through scenes of singing dolls representing children around the world. In 1996, a 6-year-old girl was injured after falling out of the boat in the loading area.

Toy Story Midway Mania is also a milder ride, with vehicles taking guests through a variety of 3-D video games.

The quarterly report from the Florida Bureau of Fair Rides also recorded multiple non-fatal incidents at theme parks in the Orlando area, including nine at Walt Disney Word, five at Universal Studios Orlando and two at Sea World.

The paper details each incident on its website.

In one instance last year, a British man visiting Walt Disney World lost two fingertips after reportedly sticking his hands outside of the boat on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.

California's Former Prisoners Often Don't Know They Can Vote, Study Finds

With severe overcrowding, abuse allegations and controversial sentencing laws, California’s prison system is a knotty political topic that often appears on the ballot. But according to a new study, many former inmates don’t know they can vote in elections.

A report released Thursday by the Greenlining Institute, a nonprofit that advocates for racial and economic equality, found that formerly incarcerated Californians often are unaware of their voting eligibility and wrongly believe they have to go through a special process to get back their voting rights. Current policy intended to inform former inmates of their rights may not be effective, according to the report.

Of the 21 former inmates interviewed for the report, 60 percent “have been confused at some point about their eligibility to vote due to a criminal conviction,” the study said. Co-author Zainab Badi acknowledged the small sample size. “But we were in two different counties and had a diverse pool of people, so we think this is indicative of a larger trend,” she said.

California, like many states, doesn’t allow current inmates or parolees to vote, but places no restrictions on voting rights for residents once they finish serving their sentences. Twelve states ban some former inmates from ever voting again.

Some former inmates told the study authors they believed they needed to take complicated measures to register as a voter. They said they were unaware that California only requires them to fill out a general voter registration form.

“Formerly incarcerated Californians … have a lot at stake in our elections,” Badi said in a press release. “We should be encouraging them to participate in our democracy as they reintegrate into society, and we need a much more comprehensive system for getting them the information they need to exercise their rights.”

When former inmates don’t vote, they miss the opportunity to change a correctional system’s failings. California passed major sentencing reforms in the last few years, including 2014’s Prop 47, which reclassified some drug convictions from felonies to misdemeanors, and 2012’s Prop 36, a reform to the state’s three strikes law, which one study participant recalled voting for.

“Years ago, I voted on Prop. 36 to give people with drug convictions the opportunity to get help instead of prison, not knowing years later it would save me from prison and save my life,” the former inmate said in the report. “So I think it’s very important to be able to vote.”

That former inmate, now on probation, did not know until the time of the study that she had not permanently lost her voting rights.

Badi told The Huffington Post that encouraging former inmates to participate in society is key to keeping them out of trouble.

“If they’re barred from voting, it can be very difficult for them to feel like they belong, and that’s a serious thing to consider if the prison system wants to reduce recidivism,” Badi said.

Assembly Bill 149, passed in 2013, requires California probation offices to post a link to the secretary of state’s voting rights guide for incarcerated people on their department website, or to post a notice with the Web address for that voting guide in the probation office. The law has fallen short of goals to better inform former inmates of their rights, the report concluded.

“I think that there are some really easy ways and minor steps that can be taken to have a tremendous impact here,” Badi said. She and her co-authors suggest the state eliminate confusion by expanding voter rights to allow current inmates to vote, as do Vermont and Maine.

The researchers alternatively suggest the state become more effective at disseminating voting rights information, possibly by providing voter education workshops, informing inmates of their rights when they’re finishing their sentences, or automatically mailing them voter registration cards.

The California Department of Corrections did not return HuffPost’s request for comment.

HTC One (M8) Compared To Alleged Successor

htc-m8-vs-htc-m9It was not too long ago that we managed to catch a glimpse of the very first leaked photos that depict HTC’s upcoming flagship device, which would be the HTC One (M9). Of course, none of the leaked photos have been confirmed to be the real deal just yet, since nothing official has been released to date, but they rank pretty high on the believable scale. In fact, the upcoming successor to the HTC One (M8) could very well be called the HTC One (M9), where it also carries what some claims the codename Hima.

Needless to say, it would not be too far off the mark to figure out that there will be a family resemblance here, as you can see above. The comparison shot shows off the alleged next generation HTC One (M9) located on the left, while the older, yet decent performing HTC One (M8) is located right smack in the middle.

Of course, one ought to take all that they have seen with a pinch of salt here, since nothing is really confirmed until there has been an official release of sorts. One would be able to take note that the speaker grille design underneath the display has changed a bit, and so too, does the overall look of the front-facing camera and the sensor array located right above the screen.

Meizu M1 Mini Leaked Photo Points To Single LED Flash

yellow-meizu-m1-mini-spyMeizu is certainly an up and coming smartphone company, where the China-based company is all set to hold a Meizu Connected press event that is tipped to happen later this January 28th. The Meizu m1 mini is tipped to receive an official release on that day, but assuming patience is not your strongest suit, perhaps a little teaser at the moment could help tide the twiddling of thumbs over in the mean time.

As you can see in the leaked image above of the alleged Meizu m1 mini, it does point to a single LED flash located near the rear camera, where the flash and overall proportions will be different from that of the Meizu m1 note. There were previous rumors that point to a 5” display, although it seems the Meizu m1 mini will pack in a smaller 4.7” display instead.

Hardware specifications of the Meizu m1 mini have yet to be revealed or confirmed, but it is widely expected that a Mediatek chipset that sports an octa-core processor will arrive, accompanied by 2GB RAM and 16GB of internal memory. I suppose there really isn’t much to do at the moment apart from sitting tight and riding out the waiting period for an official release.

Alleged HTC One (M9) Case Reveals Handset Design

htc-one-m9-caseThe smartphone case is one particular accessory that is deemed to be an essential purchase for just about every smartphone user. After all, you would not want that pristine handset of yours to end up with plenty of scratches along the way so soon after purchase, do you? There has been alleged renders from a case manufacturer in (where else but) China that does seem to confirm the design of the alleged HTC One (M9), which we have already seen compared to its predecessor earlier this evening.

The leaked image does point out certain features of the HTC One (M9) flagship device, otherwise it would not be too much of a case at all. There seems as though the distinctively shaped camera, which is allegedly packed with a 20.7MP sensor, will truly be highlighted at the the back.

Not only that, the case renders also point to the possible position of the power/lock key button of the HTC One (M9), also known as the HTC Hima, although the key will in all certainty, remain on the right side of things, which is a departure from its previous two predecessors that had the key located right on top. Are you looking forward to the HTC One (M9)?

Dota 2 Banned In A Philippines District

dota2_18791_screenI do know that gaming can get rather intense at times, but does it really need to rile up one’s emotions and feelings, so much so that animosity is created between players? Dota 2 has been the cause of a number of unrest cases throughout various computer cafés (or cybercafes) in the Philippines, so much so that one particular district in one large city has declared an outright ban on Dota 2.

When In Manila did reveal that there was a decree issued by the district council of Salawag, which has a community of approximately 60,000 souls, located within the larger city of Dasamariñas, which is right outside of Manila. The municipal ban has come about after reports of youths playing Dota 2 in public cafés ending up involved in brawls which have since caught public attention. Certainly not the best of behaviors, don’t you think so? And so, Salawag’s government decided that they had to step in to prevent any more fights – and who knows what an enraged person might end up doing when they see red? That is normally when logic is thrown out of the window.

Hence, and internet café that runs this game and violates the ordinance in the process would run the risk of punishment, including a suspension from operations for a month to a complete revocation of their business license.
