Patricia Arquette Wins Best Supporting Actress At The 2015 Golden Globes For 'Boyhood'

Patricia Arquette won Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Globes for her role in “Boyhood.”

“I’m the only nerd with a piece of paper,” Arquette said in her speech. She went on to thank co-stars Ethan Hawke, Ellar Coltrane, director Richard Linklater and her family.

Arquette spent 12 years making “Boyhood.” Richard Linklater’s film tells the story of a young boy named Mason (Ellar Coltrane) who grows up during the 2000s. Arquette plays Mason’s mother, and has a surfeit of knockout scenes, including one before Mason goes to college. “I just thought there would be more,” she says.

This is Arquette’s first Golden Globe win. She scored three previous nominations for her work on the NBC series “Medium,” which ran for seven seasons before ending in 2011. (The entire series ran while Arquette was still in production on “Boyhood.”) The 46-year-old actress has won praise throughout awards season, and stands as a heavy favorite to take home the Oscar in this category next month.

Arquette defeated Jessica Chastain (for “A Most Violent Year”), Keira Knightley (for “The Imitation Game”), Emma Stone (for “Birdman”) and Meryl Streep (for “Into the Woods”) for the honor. Last year, Jennifer Lawrence won Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Globes for her work in “American Hustle.”

The 19 Most Awkward Moments From The Season 4 Premiere Of 'Girls'

“Girls” is back! And if you watch television shows live when they air — do people do that anymore? — you skipped the Golden Globes on Sunday night to tune into the Season 4 premiere. “Iowa” was a profound tapestry of uncomfortable moments that, let’s be real, mostly involved Marnie playing not jazz at a painstaking jazz brunch. Here were the most awkward moments from the Season 4 premiere that we’re still cringing over:

Spoiler alert if you haven’t seen “Girls” Season 4, Episode 1 “Iowa.”

  • Adam’s speech about Hannah taking “steps in a series of random steps.” We know Adam isn’t the best public speaker, but we definitely wouldn’t want him giving a toast at a wedding or a eulogy at a funeral. This may have been the most uncomfortable Hannah & parents dinner yet.
  • Adam’s anti-depressant commercial. The casting was certainly on-point for the ad (who’s more moody than Adam?), but we’re still curious what major plot points were edited out of the final commercial.

  • When it’s impossible to tell what oral sex act Desi is performing on Marnie to make her butt jiggle that much.
  • When Shosh’s parents, Mel and Mel Shapiro, fight over what what address her diploma should be sent to, because they are not sure which Mel Shapiro is the Mel Shapiro in question.
  • When Natasha Lyonne appears as a dramatic equestrian who cannot say “unconscionable.”
  • Whatever outfit Natasha Lyonne is wearing to play the part of a dramatic equestrian who cannot say “unconscionable.” (Sorry, but high socks and flip-flops will never be a thing, never.)

  • When Marnie tells her mom they don’t have the same color face.
  • When Marnie’s mom acts just like your mom, taking excessive photos of your friends to immediately post them on her Facebook.
  • When Elijah blatantly lies about saving a kitten.
  • elijah

  • When Elijah sees his ex-boyfriend have brunch with a bunch of basics named Lisa.
  • When Marnie watches Desi make out with Clementine like a hungry bear guarding its young.
  • When Marnie says, “Thanks, girl!” to Clementine.
  • When Marnie says, “Or are we Marnie and Desi? We’ll talk about that later, SIR.” Nope.
  • marnie desi

  • When Marnie says, “Maybe I’ll scat for you, do a little rap.” (Let’s all take a moment to thank Lena Dunham for not turning this proposition into a reality.)
  • When Marnie cries inside of the jazz brunch.

5 Perfect Quotes From HBO's 'Girls' Season 4, Episode 1

Here at HuffPost Women, one of the things we love most about Lena Dunham’s HBO show, “Girls,” is the incisive, witty and hilarious dialogue that Dunham and the rest of her writing team come up with every week. So instead of simply recapping Season 4, we decided to pick five quotable gems from each episode.

Episode 1: “Iowa”

The four “Girls” (and their boy/friends) are back in town and on our small screens. Hannah is preparing to leave for two years to get her MFA at the University of Iowa’s prestigious writers’ workshop. She and Adam are still pretty damn adorable — despite his frustration that his acting career has only landed him a starring role in an antidepressant commercial — and while they aren’t breaking up due to distance, they’ve decided to plan to have no plan. (Frankly, this seems like like a recipe for relationship disaster.) Marnie is still involved with Desi both sexually and musically, and we are treated to the pair’s disastrous performance at a delightfully awkward “jazz brunch.” Jessa’s lovely relationship with artist Beadie, who she nearly helped commit suicide last season, is cut short by the appearance of Beadie’s daughter (played by the amazing Natasha Lyonne). Her relationship with Hannah is on the rocks because Jessa is pissed that Hannah is leaving her behind in New York shortly after lecturing her on staying put. And last but not least, Shosh is finally graduating from NYU, with her bickering, divorced parents (both named Mel Shapiro and played by Ana Gasteyer and Anthony Edwards) by her side. Her entrance to the real world and mission to “get ‘er done” begins with apologizing to Ray for pressuring him to get back together with her at the end of last season. The most beautiful part of the premiere comes at the end, when Marnie shows up to see Hannah off to Iowa. The real love story of the series has always been between these two.

girls brunch

1. Beadie’s daughter on millennial entitlement: “Every time I meet someone five or more years younger than me, they are a complete a**hole. Is it because you were told you were special one too many times and you believed it? Because when my generation and every generation before me were called special, we were smart enough to know it meant we were stupid, so it made us work that much harder to stop being stupid.”

2. Hannah on preparing to move: “I don’t usually pack. I usually leave my crap in a pile and hope it makes it to where I’m going.”

3. Jessa on Hannah’s choice to leave New York: “You’re pussying out on this whole thing. The thing that we’re all trying to do, which is make it work regardless of location, right where we are.”

4. Shosh on life after college: “I finished my degree. And now I’m just in the world, trying to get ‘er done.”

5. Elijah on women in the entertainment industry: “What do Judy Garland and Lady Gaga have in common?” -Elijah “They’re both white?” -Marnie “No, they’re both bad bitches who don’t give a f**k what people think.”

Silver Jews: "Suffering Jukebox"

So, I really like the Silver Jews, the David Berman-led side project that sprung forth from the creative genius of Pavement. But it was also something completely different, and with news that the band might be returning this week, I could barely contain my excitement.

iJustine loves fitness wearables as much as Taco Bell

Digital diva and influencer Justine Ezarik (aka iJustine) thinks CES is a big “tech tease.” She’s right, of course — there’s just too much technology to cover in a short amount of time (and inevitably, some of it will never be released). But it’s fi…

UBS: Apple Sold 69.3m iPhones Last Quarter, A Third Of Which Came From China

iPhone-6-review-5We know that Apple has managed to sell a lot of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus units ever since it has been released, and new numbers released by UBS has revealed that the Cupertino company has managed to sell 69.3 million iPhones in the last quarter of 2014, ultimately setting an all-time record for Apple.

However what makes it more interesting is the fact that China accounts for more iPhone shipments than the US, which is a first. Based on UBS’ estimates, China accounted for about 35% of iPhone shipments. This is a huge leap from last year in the same quarter in which China only accounted for 22% of iPhone sales.

As for the US, their sales have increased from 24% to 29% year on year. However we should note that shipments does not necessarily indicate sales, but it is a sign that there is a huge demand for the product, otherwise why would Apple bother sending in that much shipment to a market with no demand, right?

What makes China’s figures even more impressive is the fact that the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus was released later than the US, so for China to overtake the US in iPhone shipments in such a short period of time says a lot about the Chinese market, and it is also understandable as to why Apple would want to focus on developing their brand further in the country.

CES 2015, the year cars got truly smart

CES 2015, like last year’s event had a very large auto presence, perhaps even a banner year for CES. Expect it to grow again next year; in fact we wouldn’t be surprised to see it start to run over into other halls. Not only did the likes of Ford, GM,…

Men Who Post Selfies Exhibit Signs Of Narcissism And Psychopathy

9714-man-vain-selfie-bigAnyone can take selfies, but apparently if you’re a man, taking selfies could actually be a sign of psychopathy. This is according to a recent study conducted by The Ohio State University in which it was revealed that men who post a lot of selfies score higher on measures of narcissism and psychopathy.

The study involved the surveying of the social media habits of about 800 men. According to Jesse Fox, the lead author of the study and assistant professor of communication at The Ohio State University, “It’s not surprising that men who post a lot of selfies and spend more time editing them are more narcissistic, but this is the first time it has actually been confirmed in a study. The more interesting finding is that they also score higher on this other anti-social personality trait, psychopathy, and are more prone to self-objectification.”

However Fox is quick to point out that this does not mean that all men who take and post selfies are necessarily narcissists or psychopaths. The study actually found that the men who participated all scored within the normal range of behavior, but had higher than average levels of both narcissism and psychopathy.

So what about women? Do the same traits apply to women who take selfies and post them online? Well according to Fox, the preliminary answer is yes. She stated that she is currently conducting a similar study on women and based on what she has found so far, it would suggest that women who take selfies exhibit the same traits as well, although in the case of women, self-objectification plays a larger role.

It’s an interesting study that shows how our personality traits could influence how we present ourselves online. What do you guys make of it?

Windows 10 For Mobile Public Preview Coming Soon [Rumor]

microsoft__logoWe’re sure many Windows Phone users are excited to see what Windows 10 for smartphones will be like. Will it introduce a brand new UI, huge improvements, spanking new features, and so on? Well if you are eager to find out, you might be interested to learn that the public preview of Windows 10 for mobile will be coming soon.

This is according to Mary Jo Foley who has in the past accurately predicted Microsoft’s moves. Foley posted on Twitter in response to a question about Windows 10 for mobile, in which she said that a public preview of Windows 10 for mobile should be made available shortly after Microsoft’s event on the 21st of January.

Now we already know that Microsoft will be holding an event later this month, so we guess we now have a better and more specific timeframe as to when we can learn more about Windows 10 for mobile. Just last week thanks to a leaked photo, we caught a glimpse of what appeared to be Windows 10 running on a smartphone.

The photo shows off what appears to be a new UI. While Microsoft will be retaining the same tiled interface, it certainly looks a lot different from Windows Phone 8.1. We’re not sure what other interesting and exciting features we can look forward to, but do check back with us on the 21st of January for the details (hopefully!).

Verizon Confirms They Are “Temporarily Sold Out” Of Lumia Phones

nokia-lumia-928-7Just last week we reported that both the Lumia 822 and Lumia 928 had mysteriously vanished from Verizon’s website. Now if the phone were sold out, they’d still be listed albeit with a side-note that they are sold out and that they would be restocked in due time. A disappearance from a website seems to suggest discontinuation entirely.

Well the good news for Windows Phone fans is that it looks like Verizon has not dropped the Lumia 822 or Lumia 928, and yes it seems that they are indeed temporarily sold out. According to a statement that Verizon released to the folks at WinBeta, they said “VerizonWireless.com has temporarily sold out of Lumia smartphones. We’re looking forward to bringing more Lumias to market with Verizon.”

Now the wording is a bit suspect. Note that Verizon did not mention anything about the Lumia 822 or the Lumia 928. Instead they talked about “more Lumias” which could indicate that new and different models will be arriving on the carrier’s network in the future. So perhaps both the Lumia 822 and Lumia 928 have been discontinued by Verizon, but their support for the Windows Phone and Lumia brand is still ongoing.

In the meantime Verizon is still selling other Windows Phone products, like the HTC One M8 for Windows and the Samsung ATIV SE.
