One Guy’s Take on What’s Happening in His Kid’s Imagination

Kids are weird. They run around screaming at nothing, haphazardly waving sticks at things, and have emotional responses to doorknobs and pavement. They’re like tiny lunatics with poor hand-eye coordination. What’s going on with the way they interact with the world is a product of very active imaginations that haven’t yet been hampered by societal expectations and pragmatism. That said, if you’re screaming at the bubble dragon, you might not get out of the way of that biker coming up behind you unless a parent moves you first.

This guy filmed his kid being a kid, and then promptly added in some CGI that makes all of these actions make sense to the average viewer. Who wouldn’t want to collect giant, shiny, gold coins, and shoot things with a magic fire stick? The narrative is there.

DIY Oversized LED Matrix Necklace: iBling

Here’s a fun project from Al Linke, the creator of the PIXEL. He used the board that he made for his pixel art LED frame to turn an LED matrix into a comically huge and interactive jewelry, which he affectionately calls the iBling.

ibling_led_matrix_necklace_by_al_linke_1zoom in

Al flashed a low power firmware on the PIXEL board then wired it to a 16×32 LED matrix. He used a 2,000 mAh battery as a power source, which should last up to 7 hours per use. Then he pimped out the iBling with gold spray paint, a fake gold chain and some Swarovski crystals. Like the PIXEL, Al can use his Android phone to display text or images on the iBling.

Here’s a fun commercial that Al made for the iBling. Note the even bigger iBling on Al.

SHABBA! Head to Instructables like you’re Shab, Shabba Ranks for more on the iBling.

Firefly Coasters Keep your Wood Shiny

My mom was big on coasters growing up. She had enough polish on the coffee table that you could play shuffleboard on it without scratching the table, and it repelled water like a duck’s back. Still, she wanted us to use coasters. As an act of civil disobedience I abstained, even when said coasters were literally touching my drink, I sat my drink on bare wood. Take that, mom!

firefly-coast-1zoom in

The one saving grace of a well-balanced coaster is that you can chuck it ninja star style at your brother’s head and be quite accurate with enough practice. Now that I am older and have my own wood furniture, I still don’t use coasters because they are stupid. Most of them are stupid anyway. Though I actually quite like these Firefly coasters. There are four of them with different patterns and the requisite cork on one side.

The coasters fit into this little Blue Sun logo tin can thingy when they aren’t sitting on your table… unused. At least these coasters are cool to look at, even as your guests refuse to use them for drinks. You can get a set for $14.99(USD) at ThinkGeek.

What Games Are People Playing? The Orr Group Shows off Roll20 Stats

Roll20 is an interesting game platform. It’s designed for you and your distant friends to get together, just like the good old days, for a session of a tabletop RPG. The difference is that you’re using a virtual tabletop that comes with a ton of digital apps and assistance. The Orr Group, which is the company behind Roll20, has released some stats on what its players are playing. Where is your game of choice?

the_orr_group_stats_1zoom in

One of the things that the Orr Group mentioned in the report was that 10% of players identify as Warhammer 40K gamers, but less than 2% are actually playing the game on Roll20. The report says that this is puzzling to the group, based on the fact that 40k is usually played 1v1, but if you look at what is actually listed under “Warhammer 40k” on the website, it’s all RPGs that aren’t Dark Heresey, which has its own heading.

It seems that nobody is playing 40k, but that the Orr Group thinks that’s what this heading refers to. Notice anything else interesting in here?

NASA Travel Posters for Exoplanets it Discovered: Vacation in Space

NASA certainly has a lot of scientists and space geeks working for it that do very serious work, but most of these guys and gals always seem to keep a sense of humor about the work they do. Take for instance the science of discovering exoplanets. One of these planets could even hold life, which would be the greatest discovery ever.

nasa-poster-1zoom in

While the science of space exploration can be very serious, NASA has also made up these cool travel posters that make me actually want to visit these places. I’ll have to wait until they can freeze me though considering the massive distances these planets lie from Earth.

There are three posters for different actual exoplanets including HD 40307g, Kepler-186f, and Kepler-16b. Each of the posters highlights something cool about the planet including the super gravity of HD 40307g, the red surface of kepler-186f, and the two suns of Kepler-16b.

If you’d like to print them out, you can grab the full hi-res images over on the NASA JPL website.

Life-size Pac-Man Maze Pops up in Los Angeles

Earlier this week, this huge Pac-Man maze showed up in the LA Fashion District. Apparently it is for a Bud Light Super Bowl commercial they’re filming. It even has life-size ghosts and dots.

pac_man_maze_1zoom in

The commercial is called “Coin” and focuses on a man being alerted via a beer bottle message to go outside. A giant coin appears and when he inserts the coin into a giant slot, a life-size Pac-Man game begins. I have had dreams just like this.

Screw the video game. This commercial is what I want to see.

Nyko PS4 Data Bank Adds Room for 3.5″ Hard Drives: Bigger Brain, Bigger Noggin

One thing the Xbox One has over the PS4 is that Microsoft’s console can use external USB drives to store game data. You can upgrade the PS4’s internal drive, but it only has room for 2.5″ drives. Thankfully PS4 users will soon be able to use 3.5″ drives with Sony’s console, via the Nyko PS4 Data Bank.

The PS4 Data Bank takes over the space of the PS4’s faceplate and drive bay. It comes with an adapter that connects to the PS4’s power input, so you don’t need to plug it into an outlet. Here’s a brief demo of the add on courtesy of IGN:

In case you didn’t watch the video, Nyko told IGN that the PS4 Data Bank will be released on the 2nd quarter of this year for around $30 to $40 (USD). If only Nyko can increase my Internet connection’s speed as well so I can go beyond dreaming of downloading a full game.

Dedicated Japanese Geeks Wait in the Snow to buy “Lucky Bag”

We have seen some crazy folks waiting in lines at Apple stores around the world when new iPhones are launching. Sometimes there are hundreds of folks in these lines. Recently in Japan, one Apple Store offered up some items called “Lucky Bags” that are more in line with what we would call grab bags here in the States. In other words, it’s a bag you buy for little money that might have something of value inside.

snowy_apple_geeks_1zoom in

The Apple Store Lucky Bags are known for being very good deals for some folks. The bags have in the past had MacBook Airs, iPads, and other valuable items inside. They sell for about $300. When the Apple store in Sapporo, Japan announced that the bags would go on sale, lots of geeks showed up and got in line. Things started out cold, but got much worse.

lucky-bag-2zoom in

These folks were sitting in line huddled in the snow by the end of the day just for the chance of landing a Lucky Bag with some goodies inside. At least the Apple Store workers rolled out hot cans of corn soup for the people waiting in line. Apparently, the worst of the Lucky Bags came packed with an iPod touch and some other trinkets, while the best ones had an iPad Air 2 or an MacBook Air. Would you wait in the snow for hours for a grab bag full of Apple gear?

Cardboard Skull: Paper Noggin

This is Vince the Human Skull by Cardboard Safari. The idea is that this laser-cut cardboard sculpture ships flat and then you put it together at home yourself.

cardboard_skull_1zoom in

It was designed by artist Nate Main. This skull would look pretty great sitting on your shelf. You could even use it to act out scenes from Hamlet. “Alas, poor Yorick!” Or you might disagree and say that you need a cardboard skull like you need a hole in your actual head.

You can get Vince in two sizes and in either white, black, brown or zebra stripe color options. I think it’s pretty cool, and I’m not a big skull fan. Although I do like my own.

M48 Tactical Survival Series: Perfect for Zombie Killin’

I think The Walking Dead’s Michonne has the right idea with her katana sword. It never runs out of ammo and can kill the undead with ease. The only downside to having a sword is that when you inevitably run up against evil humans bent on pillaging what you have, you have the literal knife at a gunfight. I think I’d like both a sword and a gun personally.

m48-1zoom in

Actually, as I would cut myself on a sword, I’d rather have something easier to wield by the uninitiated like this M48 Tactical Survival Series 2.0 hammer or Kama. The hammer almost looks innocent enough; it’s just a hammer other than the big sharp skull-puncturing spike on the end. It can hammer up wood barricades by day and poke zombie brains at night. I like it!

m48-2zoom in

There is nothing innocent looking about the Kama version with its wicked curved blade. Both of these are made from 2Cr13 stainless steel and come with a nylon sheath. You can get either one for $39.99(USD) at ThinkGeek.
