Drew Brees Accidentally Hitting The Lights On 'Conan' Pretty Much Proves Deflategate

Drew Brees visited Conan O’Brien Wednesday and basically proved it is in fact easier to handle … er … throw balls when they’re underinflated. It seems pretty scientific, too.

After the Saints quarterback correctly guessed that he was holding a regularly inflated football, he tried to throw it to an audience member and accidentally smacked the studio lights instead. Following some embarrassment, Brees was given another football that was about as flat as a pancake and slinged it right to his target.

So there you have it. Case closed. Now, can we all just watch the “Key & Peele” football sketch until the Super Bowl starts, please?

“Conan” airs weeknights at 11:00 p.m. ET on TBS.

3 American Contractors Killed In Insider Attack In Afghanistan

KABUL, Jan 29 (Reuters) – Three American contractors were killed and a fourth was wounded by an Afghan solider at the military airport in the capital Kabul, an Afghan air force official told Reuters on Thursday.

“It is unclear yet why he shot these advisers and no one else was there to tell us the reason,” the official said, asking not to be named because he was not authorized to give statements to the media. “An investigation has been opened.”

The international force in Afghanistan confirmed the shooting took place on Thursday evening.

Thriving With Arianna Huffington — A Must Read

It’s been said that timing is everything. When I purchased Thrive and began reading, I instantly knew it came into my hands at the right time. What is the definition of thrive? Grow or develop well; prosper. Having ignored my better judgement for far too long, I started listening to that wise voice speaking to me loud and clear. This is how Thrive transformed my life. It conveyed those messages that I desperately needed to hear.

I wrote out a list of everything I wanted to change starting with my health and well-being. I put my words into practice. I started eating better, working out at the gym and made huge efforts to change my sleeping patterns. All I can say is that I already feel a huge improvement. I have more energy; I think more clearly and feel more confident. This makes me happy!!

Next on the list was a biggie!! Changing my perspectives!! I had many “a-ha” moments with the chapters on Wisdom and Wonder. I realized how stuck I am on so many aspects of my life. I know that this comes from a very deep rooted conditioning and upbringing. This is not a bad thing, but there comes a time when these perspectives have to shine a different light. Not taking me so seriously has made all the difference. I catch myself before I find the need to judge. Who am I to judge anyway!! I’m not perfect!! I remind myself that everyone has a story and sometimes it’s great to hear those stories. You never know what you can learn about yourself by listening to other people’s experiences and how they’ve dealt with issues, problems, tragedies. The operative word here is listening. Not making it about myself, not comparing who’s got it better or worse, not feeling the need to validate where I stand, just listening. If I can offer some encouraging words or just a warm hug, then I hope I made a difference. This is where I can say I’ve become the wiser.

Now for the challenging part of the list. My “addiction” to my phone and computer and tablet and … well need I say more. What feels good is that I can admit to truly being attached to my devices. When you put that conscious attachment to these things it really drives home how they take over and impede on life itself. Really. Did I just say that? Well that’s the first step with any addiction, admitting that it takes over. So thanks to Arianna I’ve taken the first crucial step to disengaging from my phone and computer. For now, baby steps which I will conquer in my own time, when I can say I am not a slave to my devices.

After reading Thrive I developed a healthy “attitude” and vibrant outlook on my life. I remind myself to appreciate all that is God given and be thankful for all my blessings. It has deepened my faith and instilled how important it is to always be kind and humble. I also feel so much more passionate about what I do and how I share my God given talents. For this I am very thankful.

Arianna’s references and quotes have been impactful sparking my curiosity to seek out other material and books which allowed me to appreciate other perspectives and opinions. There is always room to grow on so many levels.

I recommend Thrive to be on everyone’s bookshelf. It’s a must read!!

Sell More Books By Creating Visual Content

As a content strategist, my primary goal is to help my clients develop content which is engaging and entices readers to take action. Valuable content cannot be overlooked when one is building a brand — as quality content helps establish you as an expert, shows your distinct personality, and builds relationships with your prospects.

If you are an author and you are working to build your platform, and secure more book sales, then you have a brand. And when you have a brand, you must have a content strategy in place so that you can stay top of mind, interact with your readers, and continue building relationships with those who are discovering you online.

When I became an author this past year, I applied all the “stuff” I knew about effective content strategy in building my business, to building my author brand and platform. One of the most effective ways I have found to increase exposure to and engagement with my memoir was to create visual content to use in a variety of places online.

Here is an example of an image I have created to use to promote my book:

2015-01-28-Quote4Square.png

As you can see from the image above, there are 4 key features:

  1. My face: When authors use their faces in social media, it makes them seem “real” and “human”. People really like that–they like to get a glimpse of you, as a person, and feel like they can get to know you better.
  2. A book excerpt: I believe one of the best decisions I ever made was to develop a series of images which contained book excerpts. This not only gives your readers a glimpse into the book itself, but look how powerful the quoted text is with the image of my face. It’s like I am talking to you, as you read it!
  3. Website URL: Whenever you create images for your brand, you should always include your website URL. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, including the URL ensures that people know where to go to read more. Second, when you brand your images with your URL, no one can take them and use them as their own–it protects your ideas and hard work.
  4. Title and author information: Be sure to include the entire title and author name in the image. Also, I made sure that I said, “Author and Speaker”, because I wanted people to know that this was a book excerpt and that I am available to speak. (And…of course, my speaking page is up-to-date at the URL I provided.)

(Note: I also choose to include a hashtag in my content marketing, so that I can engage with my audience on social media. This is an optional, fifth element, you could include if this is part of your strategy.)

Creating an image for your book is a lot easier than you might realize. I don’t have any graphic design skills at all. There are lots of online tutorials and apps that will help you create stunning images for free! For the most basic image, you can use Powerpoint to place the image and text in an appealing manner, and then export to PDF. From there, you can take a screenshot, and you now have a JPEG image that is easy to use.

How to Use the Images To Build Your Author Brand

Now that you have an image, what should you do with it? Here are some of the ways I am using my images to market my book:

  1. Every Thursday, one of my images is published to Twitter, Google+, and Facebook. Because the image is appealing, it is shared quite frequently. I also get responses based on certain quotes/excerpts, and this is a great way to start conversations with your online friends and followers.
  2. I created a Pinterest board, just for my book images. The board is called My Memoir: Breaking the Silence. As I create more images, I add them to the board, and this keeps all the people who love images, and are using Pinterest for this very reason, engaged with my content. (And if I used Instagram, these images would be perfect to use there too–but I can only do so much!)
  3. When I email my book list, sometimes I include an image from the series. They enjoy the visual aspect to go along with the words they have encountered in the book.
  4. If you have a blog associated with your book (and you should–it is a powerful marketing strategy), you can publish these images as individual blog posts. I am a big fan of repurposing the content that I have already worked hard to make!
  5. I loaded some of my images into my Amazon Author Page, so that people who were interacting with my product on Amazon, could view some of the most compelling content in visual format.

I’m sure there are countless other ways that you could use a visual image series as a powerful strategy for marketing your book and selling more copies! As authors, we must always provide value and produce content for our future readers who have yet to discover us!

Sleev will protect your wires by shrink-wrapping them

Sleev Our charging cables are very important to us. They let precious electricity flow into our smartphones, letting us continue mindlessly staring open-mouthed at social media and mobile game for hours on end. Of course, our phones don’t have the longest lifespan ever, so most of the time we have to take our cables with us to plug into a computer, backup battery, or wall outlet. The constant winding, unwinding, and being stuffed into bags is going to put strain on the integrity of the cable over time. If this story is known to you all too well, then you’ve likely gone through a cable or two by accident. There’s a good chance you’re currently using a cable that is ripped, wrinkled, and has to sit at a certain angle to charge your device. If you’d prefer to keep your cable pristine for longer, then the Sleev may be able to help. This is a little tube that will cover the joints of your cable, saving them from an early grave.

To use these little cable sleeves which have a very inventive name, place it over the cable you want to keep safe and use a lighter or other poignant heat source to shrink the casing. You will certainly want to make sure that you’re not heating one point for too long lest you want to destroy your cable before regular use has a chance to. It should be obvious, but directly after heating don’t touch the Sleev, and leave the cable and casing to cool so it will harden. This is extremely inexpensive, costing $4 for a pair, or $20 for 7 pairs.

Available for crowdfunding on Kickstarter

This Inflatable Night Sky Looks Awesome

A London event called “Light Night” is all about bringing together dreamers, artists and engineers to build installations based which involve light. That’s always a recipe for awesomeness, but this year one team kicked things up a notch, by putting people among the stars.

This cool project by London design studio Loop.pH is called Osmo, which simulates sitting outside in the night sky. It’s a pneumatically-inflated cocoon made from silver mylar and illuminated by lasers. It even has a zip-up entrance so no outside light can get in and ruin the illusion. That must have been so fun to sit inside of.
