VineRobot Project Could Lead To Better Wine

vinerobotAn European research consortium that is made up of Spanish, French, Italian and German universities and companies are currently looking into developing what they call the VineRobot, which will be an unmanned robot that comes with a slew of non-invasive advanced sensors and artificial intelligence systems in order to help us humans better manage our vineyards. The VineRobot will hopefully be able to move around, gathering vital statistics and deliver reliable, fast and objective information on the state of the vineyards, ranging from the likes of vegetative development, water status, production and grape composition.

One of the biggest advantages of this particular project would be the availability of a large quantity of automatically obtained data, and just about any user can interpret such data without having to go through a really steep and serious learning curve. Not only that, all of the information gathered can be transmitted wirelessly, now how about that?

Project researcher Javier Tardaguila shared, “Robotics and precision agriculture provide producers with powerful tools in order to improve the competitiveness of their farms. Robots like the one we are developing will not substitute the vine grower, but will facilitate their work, so they can avoid the hardest jobs in field. It has several advantages including the ability to predict grape production or its degree of ripeness in order to immediately assess its quality without touching it.”

Majority Of Android Users Switching To iPhone Are From Emerging Markets

iphone-growth

Just two days back Apple announced record breaking quarterly results. iPhone sales have reached a new high, 74.5 million units, aided by the popularity of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Apple CEO Tim Cook himself said that these new iPhones have brought about the higher switchover rate from Android in recent years. A report from CIRP shows that majority of those Android users are from emerging markets in different parts of the world.

The latest data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners revealed that in the U.S. 19 percent of iPhone customers said that they had made the switch from Android during the previous quarter, the numbers overseas were much greater.

CRIP says that the reason why majority of Android users switching to iPhone from emerging markets is because there is still room for growth at the high-end segment in those markets.

Since Apple delivered on customers’ hopes by bumping up the display sizes significantly for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus this just provided a big boost for sales.

The new iPhones have also spurred growth much closer to home as well. The decision to increase display sizes on the iPhones has definitely paid off, resulting in 74.5 million units being sold during a three month period, and Apple posting an overall quarterly profit of some $18 billion, more than any other company has ever done in a single quarter.

LG G4 To Roll Out In Q2 (Rumor)

lg logoIt seems that an LG executive was caught saying that their upcoming flagship device, the LG G4, will not likely be introduced at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, simply because the company would want to “spend more time perfecting the new phone”. Well, that is definitely not the finished article, so to speak, since additional information has arrived at our doorstep, where gleaning LG’s conference call with investors over the recent quarterly earnings report does seem to point as though LG Mobile is preparing themselves to make a major product announcement later in the second quarter of this year. No prizes for guessing what this major product announcement will be – since LG does not roll out tablets like Samsung does, chances are we would see the successor to the LG G3, which would be aptly known as the LG G4, announced in Q2 this year.

The LG executive did mention that where the LG G4 is concerned, “design will continue to differentiate in terms of strategy,” which opens up the door to another question – is he pointing to perhaps the rearrangement of the physical keys on the handset, or could the end user be looking at a different kind of material used to build the LG G4? As usual, with all rumors and speculation, only time will be able to tell in the long run, so sit tight, and in the mean time, do take what you have read with a pinch of salt – just so that you do not set yourself up with disappointment eventually.

LG: Snapdragon 810 Heat Issues Are No More

lg logoIt seems that there has been word going around that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor does indeed suffer from the issue of overheating, and taking into consideration the LG G Flex 2 handset that runs on the Snapdragon 810 chipset had already been announced earlier this month at CES 2015, it makes perfect sense for LG to step forward and perform some sort of damage control – by mentioning that their 64-bit octa-core smartphone does not heat up. In fact, the LG G Flex 2 was commended that it emits less heat than competing smartphones, now how about that? However, over at its recent Q4 2014 earnings conference, LG did mention shipping 60 million smartphones and experiencing an increase in revenue, as well as admission that it encountered “issues” in the initial batch of Snapdragon 810 processors, although the good news is, such “issues” have already been solved.

The main question to ask is this, has any of the LG G Flex 2 produced actually carry Snapdragon 810 processors that have “issues”? Hopefully not, so keep your fingers crossed, and so to if you are on the lookout to include the LG G4 as your smartphone purchase later this year when it is released some time in Q2 this year, according to the latest estimates.

Samsung Has A Strict Diet Plan For TouchWiz

samsung logo 4

Not all Samsung users are crazy about TouchWiz. Like many other Android OEMs Samsung too slaps on its custom skin on top of the operating system. It brings a unique look and feel to the company’s devices as well as some exclusive features. However as a result the software on these devices can be heavy and bloated which ultimately reflects badly on the user experience. A report published today claims that Samsung is going to trim the fat off of TouchWiz and that its diet plan for the custom skin is very strict.

We saw a hint of this back when the Galaxy S5 was announced last year. Samsung removed some non-essential TouchWiz features and apps which were then made downloadable so users could still get them if they wanted.

Sammobile reports today that Samsung is removing “every add-on feature” which can be downloaded separately as an app. This would go a long way in making TouchWiz more lean and optimized.

The report doesn’t say which features and apps will be removed and which will remain but other reports suggest that Samsung wants to optimize the software to near Nexus levels.

Only removing bloatware from the software isn’t going to do much for the user experience even though its a good start. Samsung will also have to make improvements to the underlying code and optimize TouchWiz as a whole so that users can really take advantage of the much leaner custom Android skin.

Broadband Internet Definition Changed

fcc-sign

The Federal Communications Commission today voted to change the definition of broadband internet in the United States. This change, passed by FCC commissioners by a 3-2 vote, raises the minimum download speeds for broadband from 4 Mbps to 25 Mbps and minimum upload speeds from 1 Mbps to 3 Mbps. If the speeds they provide don’t reach this standard then internet service providers cannot call those connections “broadband.”

Interestingly this new definition of broadband internet triples the number of households in the country that doesn’t have access to broadband. As it stands only 6.3 percent of the households don’t have access to broadband under the previous 4-1 threshold while an additional 13.1 percent don’t have access under the new 25-3 threshold.

Cable providers aren’t too happy with this rather bold move by the Federal Communications Commission. Services backed by fiber optic and cable can reach these standards easily but there’s a problem for DSL services, which rely on telephone lines, and usually aren’t capable of reaching the new threshold.

An important distinction has to be made here. FCC has only changed broadband’s definition. This doesn’t force ISPs to deliver 25 Mbps speeds. ISPs will simply not be able to brand their services as “broadband internet” if they don’t meet these standards.

FCC Commissioner Tom Wheeler voiced his support for this new standard saying that “When 80 percent of Americans can access 25-3, that’s a standard. We have a problem that 20 percent can’t. We have a responsibility to that 20 percent.”

Porsche Pajun Could Be A Major Tesla Rival

porsche-pajunWhen one talks about Porsche, one would definitely think of the iconic 911 supercar, which is not only compact, but packs quite a punch when it is driven. Well, over the years, Porsche has also moved on to explore other kinds of rides, including 4-wheel drives starting with the Cayenne, and they also have the extremely luxurious Panamera. Well, it is close to four years that rumors have been going around concerning a model known as the Porsche Pajun – and it looks like all that time waiting is about to bear some “fruit” at last.

Word on the street has it that Porsche is working on launching what they would call the Pajun (which is shorthand for Panamera Junior, similar to how the Macan project was previously known as the Cajun), and the main draw for the Pajun? It would be a 100% electric vehicle, now how about that?

Chances are the Pajun (which would most probably be called something else when released) will be different enough to stand out from the likes of other four-door rides, although it should be in the class size of that of the Mercedes E-Class, BMW 5 Series, and Audi A6. The thing is, will Tesla be directly affected in this market segment if the Pajun were to take off in a big way?

Alleged Samsung Galaxy S6 Prototype Leaked

s6-case-prototypeIt goes without saying that South Korean smartphone manufacturer, Samsung, will be rolling out their brand new flagship device later this year – where it will be called the Samsung Galaxy S6, continuing from where the Galaxy S naming convention left off. Tipped to arrive in March this year at Mobile World Congress, there has been some leaks of the handset in the past, and what you see above here happens to be an alleged prototype of the Galaxy S6.

Of course, although a picture supposedly speaks a thousand words, not much can be mentioned here although we can tell that if this should be the real deal in due time, then the overall design has undergone a rather substantial change. The positioning of the rear flash/heart rate sensor does seem to have moved, which so happens to be located right next to the sensor instead of being under it, and the overall design does seem to be rather flat, accompanied by rounded edges in the corner.

Of course, it does make plenty of sense to take this bit in with a pinch of salt – or rather, throw a handful at it, since this is but an alleged prototype unit. Who knows? The final design could turn out to be radically different, making this but a red herring all this while.

Nokia N1 Doing Extremely Well In China

nokia-n1-7

A few months back Nokia announced a new tablet called N1. It said that this tablet would only be sold in China. When the first batch was released it sold out within minutes. This batch consisted of 20,000 units. Since then Nokia has released two more batches, and even though it didn’t say how many units were in those batches, both of them were sold out quickly as well. The one that was put up for sale today met a similar fate.

It looks like customers in China really like Nokia’s new tablet. The company’s fourth batch of the Nokia N1 tablet was sold out soon after it was made available. This has now pushed the release date for the next batch to February 26th.

It’s easy to understand why customers are quickly picking up Nokia N1 units. The Nokia brand itself has a long history with Chinese customers and the N1 has very impressive specifications for its price.

The tablet has an 2.3GHz quadcore processor Intel Atom Z3580 processor with 2GB RAM and 32GB of onboard storage. It has a 7.9-inch IPS display with 1,536×2,048 pixel resolution with 324 pixels per inch.

All of this is packed into a finely built package that costs 1,599CNY or just over $250. Nokia hasn’t said if the N1 will ever make it out of China.

Beware, The Lego SHIELD Helicarrier Is Coming

lego-helicarrierI am quite sure that many of us who have watched the Avengers, as well as other Marvel films that have the Helicarrier in there, would have been more than impressed with the architectural design and grandeur of it all. Having said that, since Lego has always been the plaything that allows the imagination of a child (and adult, of course) to go wild, here is one more to add to your Christmas wishlist – heck, any normal wishlist would do now, as waiting until Christmas might be a killer for some, in the form of the Lego SHIELD Helicarrier.

This is no unicorn for sure, as it is real and extremely amazing, but you will also need to brace yourself when it comes to purchasing it since the Lego SHIELD Helicarrier is not going to come cheap with a sticker price of $349.99 attached to it. The entire Lego SHIELD Helicarrier (76042) would see a 2,996 piece count and best of all is, it will arrive with five different Avengers minifigs in addition to a dozen all-new super detailed microfigures when it hits the market officially this coming March 1st.

Needless to say, we have seen our fair share of brilliant DIY projects using Lego, such as this Lego Braille Printer, but the SHIELD Helicarrier above is one example of an awesome kit as well.
