Imgur GIF Maker Launched

imgur-gif-maker

Imgur is a network that is undoubtedly going to keep the GIF alive forever. Most of the GIFs I come across everyday can easily be traced back to the vibrant Imgur community so its only fitting that this service launch a tool which makes it easier for people to create them. That’s just what Video to GIF does. It’s the Imgur GIF maker we have all been waiting for.

As the name suggests this tool can be used to quickly make a GIF out of a streaming video like the ones you find on YouTube. Though Imgur clarifies that most of the time this tool will create a “.gifv” file which is pretty similar to the conventional GIF format and the only noticeable differences are seen in the way they’re played back.

Conventional GIFs are very easy to share but Imgur’s GIFVs are not. Though they stand out in quality. They’re high quality clips that can load fast and don’t weigh too much. To share them one needs to insert the correct embed code which is something you don’t need to do when sharing GIFs.

Embedding a code isn’t difficult at all but its not what many would call easy or efficient. It takes a couple of more seconds and that might not seem like too big a deal once you compare it with the quality that GIFVs bring.

1 Billion Android Devices Shipped In 2014

Android logoAh, figures and numbers – these are the stuff that folks always look forward to, whether it is the kind of market performance, or how a vehicle works, or even the total number of sales, all of such data works wonders in shaping the opinion and perception of the man on the street. We do know that in this recent quarter, Apple managed to arrive reached an important milestone where it managed to sell its billionth iOS-powered device. Sounds impressive, but that pales in comparison to what Android has achieved. In 2014 alone over a billion Android devices were shipped – at least according to Strategy Analytics. The analyst firm figured out that out of the estimated 1.3 billion smartphones shipped last year , more than a billion of those were powered by the Android platform.

It would be a folly to underestimate the growth rate of the smartphone industry as well as the potential to improve even further – in fact, smartphone shipments grew by a whopping 30% compared to 2013, and Android handsets moved from 800 million units shipped to a billion within that time period. iOS devices did lose some ground where market share is concerned, but I don’t suppose that that had negatively impacted Apple in an adverse manner, since they continue to report record quarterly profits, last we heard at least. Heroes Of Might And Magic III Arrive On iOS, Android Platforms

homm-3-androidHow many of you remember Heroes of Might and Magic III fondly? I know that I have spent a fair number of hours on that particular game, and more than one and a half decades later, the game can still be a time sink if you are not careful with your self discipline and time management. This 1999 turn-based strategy title happens to be one of the best in the Heroes of Might and Magic series, and just about any gamer worth his or her salt who is into the tactical and/or fantasy genre ought to have given it a go by now. Well, if you were not born back then, or missed it out completely, fret not – there will be a copy of it heading your way, in High Definition to boot, on both iOS and Android platforms for $9.99 a pop.

It is time to dig up the old strategy book and blow the dust off. After all, you will first need to ensure that your castle is well defended, and figure out where to branch out from there in terms of troops as well as research. Not only that, you will also need to explore the map, and spend your limited turns wisely in order to emerge as the victor at the end of the day.

There is the old fashioned hot-seat multiplayer mode, so those who are stuck on long road trips with a buddy can always give this title a go. Of course, the average match would definitely take some time, so be prepared to get impatient with your fellow player!

Nickelodeon Announces An Online Subscription Service

TV networks are adapting to the changing market dynamics by embracing online streaming. Nickelodeon joins the list of networks that are going online and over the top. Today the network’s parent company Viacom has announced Nickelodeon’s online subscription service and confirmed that customers will not require a cable subscription to access it.

It’s not the only network to take this step. HBO will soon be launching its own over the top subscription service and CBS is in the game as well. Nickelodeon is in good company here and this just the right time to make this move as online streaming companies like Amazon and Netflix are increasingly investing in kids’ shows.

Nickelodeon will mainly be focusing on mobile devices and today’s announcement doesn’t specify if it will be possible to access this service through a web browser.

Even if the service is limited to mobile devices it wouldn’t be too hard to get content up on a big screen TV using solutions like Miracast or streaming dongles like Google Chromecast.

Viacom has only confirmed the online streaming service today and hasn’t revealed what it will be called. It will announce more details in February so that’s when we’ll find out just how much this is going to cost parents.

Chrome Beta Updated To Version 41

chromebetaChrome Beta happens to be where new features are tested out before it arrives on Chrome for Android, which is a good thing, since the limited “playground” that it has to work in will help the end users later on, as all bugs and nuances would have been discovered and hopefully, fixed by then. We are pleased to bring you word that Chrome Beta has been updated recently to version 1, where one of the more notable new features has also been introduced – and that is, the pull-to-refresh feature, which can also be found in the likes of Gmail, Facebook, and Twitter, among others.

Up until this point in time, the refresh button had remained hidden within the flow menu, which did not manage to make the entire user experience feel “complete”, if you know what I mean, but thankfully, all of that has been fixed already, resulting in a far more intuitive and handy way to enjoy Chrome down the road.

When you head right to the top of the page and pull it down once again, the existing website will reload itself, without having you to touch the all too familiar three-dot menu while looking for the well used refresh button. You can always play the patience card and wait for Chrome Beta to update itself, or do so manually from here.

Q&A With theSkimm Co-Founders Danielle Weisberg and Carly Zakin

As a public relations professional, my job requires me to stay top of the news. But just like anyone else, I am constantly feeling overwhelmed by information. Up until 2013, I thought Twitter lists were the best way to distill the day’s news nuggets into digestible chunks. That is, until I discovered theSkimm.

theSkimm is a daily email newsletter that summarizes the news of the moment. I read it every weekday morning on my iPhone before I even crawl out of bed. theSkimm is important because it represents a shift in the way people, especially millennials, are consuming the news. When I was growing up, people read the newspaper over Cheerios in the morning and watched the news at night. Today, news is everywhere. And it’s being created by bloggers, citizen journalists, Tweeters and well, just about everyone.

If you’re fascinated by the shift in how people are consuming news, or curious about what it took for two 20-something millennials to quit their jobs and start their own media entity, read my Q&A interview with theSkimm co-founders Danielle Weisberg and Carly Zakin.

Skimm waaaa? Tell our readers a bit more about what theSkimm.
theSkimm is the daily email newsletter that tells you everything you need to know to start your day. It’s pretty much your secret weapon so you can walk into any meeting or event and feel confident that you know what people are talking about — whether it’s finance, politics, education or entertainment.

I know you both left NBC to pursue theSkimm. What sparked the idea?
We both grew up news junkies. We started interning at NBC News as soon as we could. We loved our jobs, but saw that the industry was changing and our career paths may not look the same in the next 5-10 years. But we didn’t want to leave news. So we started to think about our friends — smart, educated women who have great jobs and went to great schools. They’re all really busy. They could tell us everything about their industry, but didn’t necessarily have the time or the interest to venture outside of it. We saw a void in the market when it came to a news product for this audience, which didn’t make sense to us. Our friends are representative of the female millennial — influencing billions of spending each year and leading in so many ways. We wanted to create a product that fit into their routines and one that they enjoyed waking up to each morning.

Were you absolutely terrified to leave your day jobs? What encouraged you to make the leap?
We were completely terrified. It was the scariest day of either of our lives and completely out of character for both of us. We had worked so hard to get to where we were that it didn’t seem to make a lot of sense to give it up. But we couldn’t ignore the void in the market and really believed we could create something that people would love.

How did you promote the newsletter when you were first starting out?
We told everyone we could about it. We sent out an email blast to friends, family, people we hadn’t talked to since kindergarten, anyone — and told them what we had quit our jobs to do. We would ask anyone who told us they liked the product to send it to five more friends. It really grew through word of mouth.

How has theSkimm grown since you launched it?
Exponentially. We are one of the fastest growing newsletters on the market and have unprecedented engagement. theSkimm continues to grow in a large part by word of mouth, now helped by our Skimm’bassador program.

What is a normal day like at Skimm HQ?
There is no normal day. From hiring, pitching potential sponsors, paying bills, doing interviews, taking out the trash — it’s a little bit of everything.

How do you see The Skimm evolving? Do you plan to add anything to the format? What is the future vision for the company?
theSkimm makes it easier to be smarter. We seek to turn news and information into a lifestyle brand. We will be looking at taking the voice to different platforms this year.

How do you find balance between work & life?
It’s hard. It’s something that is really important to us and equally as hard to find balance in. We try to have a strict schedule so we can do our best to create some balance. Try is the key word.

What advice would you give to other young women hoping to quit their jobs to pursue a dream?
Take a vacation and take a coding class before you start!
