The New Moto E Gets Bigger Screen And LTE

moto-e-2nd-gen-2

Motorola was expected to unveil the new Moto E this week and indeed it has. Today it finally lifted the wraps off of its new smartphone. Right off the bat you will notice two things about this new device. It has a bigger display than its predecessor and happens to have support for 4G LTE. The new smartphone goes on sale today in 40 markets around the world.

The new Moto E from Motorola has a 4.5-inch 540×960 display, a quadcore Snapdragon 410 processor from Qualcomm, 8GB onboard storage, microSD card support, 5 megapixel rear and VGA front camera, and it comes with Android 5.0 Lollipop straight out of the box.

What’s interesting is that this is still the most affordable smartphone in Motorola’s lineup yet it now offers support for 4G LTE. Motorola has also added the Quick Capture feature to this smartphone which will allow users to launch the camera app with just one twist of their wrist. Active Display feature is present as well which wakes up the screen to show notifications even when the phone is pulled out of the pocket.

As far as the design is concerned that aren’t any discernible changes that set the latest and the previous generation Moto E apart. Motorola starts selling the Moto E with LTE today for $149. 3G models will be sold for $119.

BlackBerry Users In UK Expected To Drop Below 1 Million By Year’s End

blackberry-curve-9300-29g1-800New research has just surfaced projecting that by the end of 2015, BlackBerry’s smartphone users may slip below the 1 million mark in the UK alone. It’s a stark contrast comparing to three years ago, during BlackBerry’s heyday, where the users in the UK are said to be more than 8 million strong.

Reportedly, the firm has plunged into an operating losing streak with market share walloped by Apple’s iPhone, Google’s Android and Microsoft’s Windows Phone in 11 out of the past 12 quarters. In a bid to cut cost, the Canadian company has took  to retrenching thousands of it staffs instead.

Researcher eMarketer says that the number of users in the UK may well be around 700,000 and would fall to 400,000 by 2017.

Another research company, Kantar Worldpanel, however has told the Guardian, in the same report that the number of BlackBerry’s data users is currently at 1.4million, losing 56,000 users every month to other platforms.

“I’d expect we would see fewer than a million people with a BlackBerry as their primary handset around September 2015,” said Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar.

Among UK smartphone users, Google’s Android makes up 56.2%, comprising 21.5 million owners, Apple’s iPhone at 32.2%. Microsoft’s Windows Phone at 8.5%, and BlackBerry’s sub-1 million users make up just 1.9%. Kantar puts Apple’s figure higher, at 13.4 million (38.1%) and Android’s lower, at 17.4 million (49.6%), with Windows Phone users totaling 2.3 million (6.5%).

Many consider the reason of BlackBerry’s users are dwindling was because of its slow reaction to the iPhone, which was initially announced in January 2007.  BlackBerry had not responded  by the time of the publication.

Fast And Furious Expansion For Forza Horizon 2 Spotted

forza-horizon-2-fast-furious-expansion

There is interesting news for you if you like playing Forza Horizon 2 on Microsoft’s console. It appears that the company has collaborated with the Fast & Furious franchise to develop an expansion of the same name for Forza Horizon 2. A brief video teaser of the expansion appeared online earlier today and it has already been yanked which means that the company is not quite ready to announce this just yet.

The teaser that popped up online earlier today showed a loose interpretation of the scene which plays out when the credits roll in Fast Five, Brian and Dom are seen racing neck and neck on twisty roads.

According to a report by the AP the Forza Horizon 2 Presents Fast & Furious expansion starts off just before the events of Furious 7 and players will be required to get certain vehicles to Tej, a character played by Ludacris, in France.

Some of the vehicles that players will be required to deliver are those they might already seen in the movies, like the ’70 Cuda, ’98 Supra and the ’70 Road Runner.

If the report is correct this expansion for Forza Horizon 2 will be released on March 27th and it will remain free until Furious 7 is launched on April 3rd, after the movie’s release the expansion will cost $10.

Samsung Has No Problem Making 5nm Chipsets

samsung-exynos-7-octa-1

While it just started mass producing the 14nm FinFET chipsets, and showcasing the 10nm FinFET semiconductor technology at the Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) in San Francisco this week, Samsung has outdone itself again by confirming that the Korean company has all the backbone to create chipsets to be as small as 5nm.

According to Samsung’s Kinam Kim, who confirmed “There are no fundamental difficulties until 5nm’. Furthermore, the Korean company has begun finding ways to shrink things even further to an insane 3.25nm level.

But before 3.25nm, the question was already raised by many in the conference as to what material will Samsung use to fabricate these chipsets?  Intel has hinted during the same conference that silicon is not a viable option for chipsets below 7nm. Apparently, Intel itself has plan to use Indium Gallium Arsenide (InGaAs) to make chipsets with transistor size of 7nm and below.

But Samsung remained mum, holding on to their trade secret.

What we know is Samsung has already planned in using the 14nm FinFET technology based Exynos 7 processor for all of its upcoming smartphones and tablets; for example the Galaxy S6, which will take full advantage of the company’s first 14nm chipsets.

Samsung had been heavily investing in its semiconductor business to try competing with Qualcomm and Intel.

Tim Cook Reportedly Reveals Apple Watch Waterproofing Has Improved

apple watch

A new rumor making the rounds today claims that on a recent trip to Germany Apple CEO Tim Cook was overheard telling a retail employee that the waterproofing of the Apple Watch has improved since it was unveiled last year, apparently it can even be worn in the shower, when this device was shown off for the first time the company didn’t say if it was waterproof enough to be worn while swimming or taking a shower.

The rumor from iGen.fr claims that Cook was speaking to employees at a retail store in Berlin where he told them that the wears his Apple Watch everywhere, “even in the shower.”

It should be kept in mind though that when the Apple Watch was unveiled last year the company had only said that the device was good for wearing in the rain, getting sweaty during a workout and washing hands. There was no mention of showers or swimming pools.

While it is possible that Apple has tweaked the watch enough that its now good for those tasks as well, one can’t discount the possibility that Cook might simply have been misheard, so we’ll really have to wait until the device arrives to find out just how resistant it is to water.

The Apple Watch will start shipping to customers in April.
