Here's What Really Happened To The Cars From 'Pimp My Ride'

TK TK gifs

“Pimp My Ride” premiered on MTV in 2004 with a straightforward premise that was beautiful in its simplicity: Take a kid with a beat up car and have the rapper Xzibit orchestrate a massive and ridiculous upgrade. The theme song explained it all in just a few lines: “So you wanna be a player, but your wheels ain’t fine / You gotta hit us up, to get a pimp’t out ride.”

But although the show operated within such a minimal framework, things were a bit more complicated behind the scenes. From cars that would break down in a matter of weeks to fat-shaming a contestant to one MTV employee apparently trying to convince another car owner to break up with his girlfriend to fit into the narrative, there was a lot more to the creation of this show than Xzibit simply saying, “Yo dawg.”

myspace

The Huffington Post spoke with three of the kids who got their cars pimped: Jake Glazier from Season 4 and Seth Martino and Justin Dearinger from Season 6. All three had previously done brief AMAs on Reddit about their time on the show. (It should be noted that each appeared on “Pimp My Ride” near the later half of its run.) And for a perspective from the other side of the camera, co-executive producer Larry Hochberg responded to a few of the claims made my contestants.

Although all of the people spoken to about “Pimp My Ride” ultimately had mostly positive experiences, the reality of what it took to get pimped ended up being even more strange than expected.

“I was very excited and naïve, so they could have told me unicorns were making me breakfast and I wouldn’t have questioned it,” Martino said. Viewers of this aughts-spectacle ended up having the same experience …

Sometimes additions to the cars were just for the show and would be taken out of the vehicle immediately after filming.

myspace

In Justin Dearinger’s Reddit AMA, he claimed that “they actually take out a lot of the stuff that they showed on TV,” such as in his case, a “pop-up” champagne contraption and a “drive-in theater.” Further explaining to HuffPost, Dearinger said that they removed the champagne part because the show didn’t want to condone drinking and driving and the theater was removed for not being street safe.

According to Larry Hochberg, however, the removals were done with a specific purpose in mind. “Sometimes we did things for safety reasons that the kids on show interpreted as us ‘taking away’ some items,” he said. He gave an example where 24-inch spinner rims on a 1977 Cutlass would look amazing for television, but “out of abundance of caution” they’d end up switching the spinners to “beautiful 20s for daily driving.”

That said, it seems as if things were occasionally put into cars with no intention of them ever working in real life. For example, a robotic arm installed into Seth Martino’s car was, as he put it, actually solely “controlled by commands that were entered into a laptop by the spiky haired guy off screen.” In reality, it “was just a robotic arm with a bunch of wires hanging out of it.”

And often additions — such as the famous backseat TV screens — simply wouldn’t work.

Seth Martino’s car seemed to be particularly low quality. “There were plenty of things wrong with it,” he told HuffPost, including television screens never working again after filming. As Martino recalled, some things that didn’t work on the car included the LED lights that were put in the seats. “They would get really hot if left on so I couldn’t drive with them on,” Martino said. “They took the gull-wing doors off because the pistons used to lift them kept them from putting seat belts in the back which was highly dangerous.” A cotton candy machine they installed was fit into the trunk without leaving enough room for the dome top to keep the cotton candy strands “from flying all over the place.”

Apparently, Mad Mike would try and help out when cars would have problems. MTV also had flatbed tow truck driver on call according to Larry Hochberg. “The people who had cars that appeared on the show would call me, and I would leave my desk, run to meet up with the flatbed tow truck and go help them,” he said. Hochberg also said the cars would occasionally have wiring issues, which he would coordinate in getting back to the West Coast Customs or eventually the GAS shop. At least it seems for the serious issues, MTV attempted to reconcile problems. “I made sure that things were fixed on cars that needed fixing,” Hochberg said. But speaking of the root of those more serious issues …

Although the cars were visually pimped, the insides were seemingly given far less attention.

pimpmyride

From the onset here, it should be noted that Larry Hochberg says that “it’s not accurate to say that we didn’t work on the mechanics of the cars” and that the contestants on the show had a misconception of what had happened with their vehicles. As Hochberg explained to HuffPost, “Some of the cars were so old and rusted that they would have mechanical issues no matter how much work you put into them [and] the production team and the car shops worked their butts off to get parts for these cars.” In one instance, MTV even sent someone all the way to a desert junkyard in Arizona just for a replacement hood on a car. A lot of these cars were almost spent and this wasn’t a show about saving cars from breaking down, it was a show about pimping. That said, as mentioned before, the cars did break down.

Jake Glazier, who felt “there were a lot of problems” with the mechanics, sold his car after just about a month. He was then told by the new owner that it had already blown out. Glazier told one example of what he felt was shoddy work: the car needed a muffler, and so a fake exhaust pipe was installed to make it seem as if that’s what the car was supposed to sound like, “even though it was just lack of a muffler.”

“There wasn’t much done under the hood in regards to the actual mechanics of the vehicle,” according to Seth Martino. “For the most part, it needed a lot of work done to make it a functioning regular driver, which they did not do.” Martino said he had a hard time even driving the car home. “They added a lot of extra weight but didn’t adjust the suspension to compensate so I felt like I was in a boat, and every time I hit a bump the car would bottom out and the tires would scrape inside the wheel well.” According to Martino, that the car would only run for about a month. Then he had to save up his own money to replace the engine.

This happened many years after the show — and after extensive outside work — but one car exploded into flames.

Five years after the show, with extensive and expensive outside work done by Dearinger himself, his pimped car burst into flames. Dearinger was driving home with his girlfriend when smoke started flooding the car. Then the two jumped out on the side of the road and within just moments the car was destroyed. You can watch the aftermath in the video above.

Although probably expected, those reveal shots of excitement were staged.

At the beginning of segments, Xzibit would be shown ringing the doorbell to a contestant’s house to surprise them. These houses were often times not the contestants’ homes; instead, each dwelling had been rented by MTV. Contestants were told to wait in the house and that at the door would either be someone holding something like a $100 Pep Boys gift certificate or it would be “ya boy Xzibit.” So the surprise of Xzibit at the door was real, but in maybe a weirder way than you expected.

Less real was the famous freakouts of contestants jumping up and down when their pimped out car was revealed. All contestants spoken to ended up having to do multiple takes of their reaction with Justin Dearinger explaining, “I guess I didn’t show enough enthusiasm.’ The director specifically told him to “be more energetic and jump around and scream.”

Jake Glazier had a bit of a different experience, remembering they had to coax him to go “ape shit” as his natural reaction to being genuinely excited is a more silent shock. His first real reaction to the car was just a quiet amazement where he said, “This is good” and they immediately yelled “re-do!” And then things got a bit weirder.

“I remember this very clearly, Big Dane, very big dude, he like puts his arm around my shoulder, kind of walks me around the shop for like 10 minutes and he’s like, ‘Listen, we put a lot of work into this … we expect you to be a little more fucking enthusiastic,'” Glazier recalled. From there, Glazier went full over the top and his reaction (pictured above) even became a bit of a meme.

The show made it seem as if the cars were in the garage for a few days, but it was actually about half a year — causing daily problems.

pimp

From watching the show, you might have thought that the vehicles were in the shop for about a weekend or even a week or two and then were given back to their owners. Not the case at all. At least for the contestants spoken to by HuffPost, the cars would actually be in the garage for about six to seven months, which obviously caused some problems.

Seth Martino had a particularly frustrating time where he had to go through a “really small, shady company off the freeway by LAX because they were the only ones willing to rent to me because of my age.” According to Martino, at first MTV only paid for a couple months and then he had to pay out of pocket. He held on to the receipts and then about two years after the show aired MTV reached out and finally reimbursed him. “It sucked having that rental car because they wouldn’t take payments over the phone so once a month I had to drive all the way from West Covina to LAX just for them to swipe my card,” Martino explained.

At least in these instances, the backstories and interests of the contestants were kind of made up.

pimpmyride

For Jake Glazier, MTV “pretty much just went with what I told them,” but with exaggerations. Glazier had said that his grandmother smoked in the car. For the show, MTV threw an “extra few dozen cigarette butts in the car to maker her just look like a total disgusting person.”

MTV apparently didn’t really listen to Justin Dearinger when they asked about his favorite colors. He said he “hated red” and then the interior of his car ended up being almost entirely that color.

The damage of the cars in the pre-pimped stage was also exaggerated by the show. Dearinger remembered that they added aircraft remover to help with the paint removal and made the bumper “look like it was falling off.”

But besides small exaggerations of likes and dislikes, MTV seems to have kind of messed with the contestants lives for the sake of the show…

MTV dumped bags of candy in one contestant’s pre-pimped car and told him to act as if he always had it there in case he got hungry. He felt as if they were going out of their way to make fun of his size.

In Seth Martino’s Reddit AMA, the contestant said, “I know im fat, but they went the extra mile to make me look extra fat by telling the world that I kept candy all over my seat and floor just in case I got hungry. Then gave me a cotton candy machine in my trunk.” Further explaining the situation, Martino said, “I sat there and watched them dump out two bags of generic candy.”

HuffPost asked Martino about the instance and he stressed again, “I did not have any candy all over my car. That was completely fabricated for the story.”

Why didn’t he speak up and say something about how MTV was treating him? “At the time, I didn’t question anything because it was an exciting experience and I just kind of went with the flow,” Martino said. He further felt as if this was all just a reason to install a cotton candy machine. “I know it is kind of mean, but I think they just wanted to put a cotton candy machine in a car and used the fat guy as the opportunity to do it.”

A suggestion to another contestant: dump his girlfriend for the half hour show because the premise was becoming a “playa” through the pimped ride.

Jake Glazier remembered who he thought was one of the producers mentioning that breaking up with his girlfriend would be good for the show. As he explained to HuffPost, the apparent producer said something about how it would play better into the storyline of him having a “shitty car” and needing the pimping to no longer be lonely.

The MTV employee apparently suggested to “basically either get rid of her or have her not be a part of the program.”

For what it’s worth, Larry Hochberg said that he was not aware of either this instance of the fat-shaming story. “Why would we want a kid to break up with his girlfriend?” he asked. “How would that have helped the show?”

Despite everything though — all of the contestants still enjoyed their time on the show and their pimped out cars, even if they caused much more attention from the cops.

pimp

“I felt like a celebrity when people recognized me/the car,” said Seth Martino who enjoyed driving the car once he “put the $1700 of work” into fixing the engine. He particularly like the sound system.

Jake Glazier only had the car for about a month as he sold it fairly quickly for about $18,000. He had originally bought the car for $500. But Glazier also regretted selling the car as the buyer — MTX, the audio company whose product was in the car — really just wanted their sound system back so it didn’t fall into the hands of their competitors. He had a really good time taking his little brothers and sisters to school in the car because them and their friends were so excited.

After the show, Justin Dearinger actually joined a car club and put about $20,000 more of his own money into the car (possibly causing the aforementioned fiery end). The car would attract a lot of attention from cops however, with Dearinger saying he was “getting pulled over on a daily basis.” Every time, Dearinger would have to explain the show “Pimp My Ride” to the cops and most of the time they “were really cool about it.”

They would all happily go on the show again and had “no real complaints.”

myspace

“Honestly, I missed it for many years,” Glazier said of the show, while adding he had no real complaints.

Dearinger, too, enjoyed himself and said he’d be happy to do it all again. “Before then I was just a kid, I was shy, I was really shy,” he said. “And then it’s sad to say, but being on the show gave me some confidence. And it made me the person I am today. I’m the most outgoing person you ever met.” Dearinger said the pimping truly brought more attention to him from girls saying “a lot of girls noticed me more.”

Of the three, it was Martino who had more mixed feelings about the experience. “The whole situation was definitely not what I hoped for, and there were times I wanted to give it all back because of how frustrating it was, but now I look back and laugh.” Martino said. “I have this really cool story that only a handful of people can really say they experienced. That makes it all worth it.”

As for Hochberg, he “loved working on the show.” Hochberg further explained his memories saying, “There were so many great kids on the show, and it was fun to give the cars to all of them.” Hochberg said one of his favorites was pimping an Ice Cream Truck, a creation that ended up being parodied by “The Simpsons.”

BONUS: But what was hanging out with Xzibit actually like?

108998546

“Xzibit is the greatest,” said Hochberg who interacted more closely with the rapper than the contestants. “He’s a talented rapper, and he is a natural host. He’s cool, funny and always thinking on his feet. I really enjoyed working with him.”

Although he wasn’t quite sure as wasn’t involved in the initial discussions, Hochberg believed Xzibit may have gotten the job because he already was a frequent customer at West Coast Customs.

The contestants didn’t get to talk with Xzibit too much at all, but each felt he was chill, easygoing and fun to be around. Martino said Xzibit would say things like “time to smoke” and that he “never got the feeling he was talking about cigarettes” although he couldn’t confirm otherwise.

“He did smell of [weed]. A lot of it,” Dearinger said. “Someone did at least, I don’t know who did, but I’m pretty sure it was … you know.”

But Jake Glazier had hands down the best interaction with Xzibit …

Yo dawg, this might be the most insane story inside a story you’ll ever hear…

TK TK gifs

“I don’t remember why he brought it up, but we were just kind of talking about what we were doing that weekend and he said he’s going to go down to hell to kill the devil so he can make some Satan skin boots.”

Now that sounds like an amazing idea for a spinoff.

John Boehner Shrugs On Possible DHS Shutdown: 'I'm Waiting For The Senate'

WASHINGTON — With less than 48 hours left to avert a shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) signaled Wednesday that he’s got no plan for breaking the impasse and is leaving it up the Senate to figure it out.

“I’m waiting for the Senate to act,” Boehner told reporters. “The House has done its job to fund the Department of Homeland Security, and to stop the president’s overreach on immigration. We’re waiting for the Senate to do their job.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) made a two-part offer on Tuesday aimed at moving DHS funding forward in the upper chamber. McConnell said he was willing to put forward a “clean” spending bill — and not attach the funding to a measure rejecting President Barack Obama’s executive actions allowing deportation relief and work authorization — and then hold a separate vote focused on the president’s actions.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said soon after that Democrats would first need to see that Boehner was on board.

On Wednesday, however, Boehner gave no indication that his caucus would support McConnell’s offer.

“Until I can see what they’re going to pass, no decisions have been made on the House side,” he said.

Republicans are in a political bind on the question of DHS funding. Some fear that a department shutdown, which will happen if Congress cannot pass a bill by Friday, would hurt the GOP in the polls. But caving on the immigration issue would be politically fraught as well, particularly for Boehner, who has previously faced criticism from his more conservative members for making deals with Democrats.

But some Republicans see a way out that would allow them to vote for a clean DHS bill without appearing to flip-flop on Obama’s executive actions. A judge issued a preliminary injunction last week that halted the government from moving forward with the executive actions Obama announced last year. The administration is seeking a ruling that would allow it to restart the policies. For now, though, since the programs aren’t going ahead anyway, some GOP members have said it may no longer be as vital to tie the immigration fight to DHS funding.

It doesn’t appear that the lines of communication have been especially open between the GOP leaders. Boehner said Wednesday that he hadn’t talked to McConnell in at least two weeks, though he noted that staffs have been talking back and forth.

Obama has not budged on his immigration actions, or on his vow to veto any DHS funding bill that limited his deportation relief programs. He met with immigration advocates on Wednesday morning to discuss the policies, and will hold a town hall later in the day to tout his plans publicly.

“I can’t find anybody who thinks it’s a good idea to shut down the Department of Homeland Security, which means that congressional Republicans should simply do their job,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Tuesday. “They should pass legislation that would fully fund the Department of Homeland Security for the remainder of this year.”

4 Simple Tips For Driver Wellness

In addition to being Black History Month, February is also American Heart Month. We all know by now that one of the keys to heart health is exercise. Did you know that exercise can also help you be a safer driver?

Most people wouldn’t associate driving with exercise. While staying fit is essential to a healthy lifestyle, it is also critical to driving safely. This is especially true as we age.

There are other health factors that can affect driver wellness. These four tips, derived from the AARP Smart Driver course Participant Guidebook, will not only keep you healthy, they will also help you become a safer driver:

1. Include Exercise in Your Daily Routine

Whether it’s squatting to get into your vehicle, turning your head to check blind spots, or flexing your foot to reach the brake pedal, driving is a full-body activity. According to recent research by The Hartford Center for Mature Market Excellence and MIT AgeLab, four areas of exercise can improve the physical driving-related movements many of us find challenging as we age: flexibility, strength, range of motion, and coordination.

You can view video demonstrations of each of these exercises online at The Hartford Center for Mature Market Excellence. Try these exercises to improve your overall physical fitness and driver wellness. Remember to consult your doctor before engaging in any new exercise program.

2. Train Your Brain

Brain training can also make you a safer, smarter driver. A study funded by the National Institute of Health recently found that adult drivers who had cognitive training for memory, reasoning, or speed of processing had 50 percent fewer car accidents than those in the control group. Incorporating brain training exercises into your daily routine can help you maintain the following critical driving skills: attention and reaction time, concentration, problem-solving skills, and memory.

As we age, natural changes may occur in our brains. Slowed reaction time, inattention, and poor judgment are responsible for many crashes at all ages but because we tend to slow down as we age, these factors assume increasing importance. Just as it is important to stay physically fit, it is important to stay mentally fit. You can access a variety of online brain fitness activities designed to help improve your memory, attention, brain speed, and overall intelligence through the AARP website.

3. Maintain a Regular Sleep Routine

Drowsy driving is distracted driving. Make sure your sleep routine isn’t affecting your morning commute. Maintaining a regular sleep routine will help you fight fatigue. Adjust your schedule so you can get the commonly recommended 7.5 to 8 hours of sleep every night. Also, make sure to eat breakfast before you get in your car so you’re not scrambling to unwrap your granola bar at a red light.

4. Take Care of Your Eyes

Did you know 90% of a driver’s reaction depends on vision? Vision matters for all drivers, regardless of age. So please remember, if your vision is impaired, so is your ability to drive safely. When it comes to driving, good vision doesn’t just mean you can read the stop signs or differentiate green lights from red lights. There are multiple aspects of our vision essential to safe and prudent driving. The American Optometric Association recommends that adults over 61 receive comprehensive eye examples annually and adults 18-60 at least every two years. So next time you’re at your regularly scheduled comprehensive eye exam, ask your provider if you have any problems that might impact your driving and how these issues can be addressed.

For more tips on how to stay safe on the road, consider taking a driving refresher course, such as the AARP Smart Driver course–AARP Driver Safety’s flagship offering and the nation’s first and largest refresher course designed specifically for older drivers. The AARP Smart Driver course is available in a classroom and online, in both English and Spanish. In some states, you may even be eligible for a multi-year insurance discount upon completion of the course. For more information, visit www.aarp.org/drive.

Vatican Tries To Defuse Anger Over Pope Francis' 'Mexicanization' Comments

VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican sought Wednesday to defuse a diplomatic tiff with Mexico after Pope Francis referred to the possible “Mexicanization” of his native Argentina from drug trafficking, the latest instance of Francis’ casual speaking style getting him into trouble.

The Vatican said it had sent an official diplomatic note to Mexico’s ambassador insisting that Francis “absolutely did not intend to offend the Mexican people” with the remark, or to detract from the government’s anti-drug efforts.

Francis made the reference in an email over the weekend to an Argentine friend and lawmaker, Gustavo Vera, who is involved in combating the drug trade. He published the pope’s email on the website of his Alameda Foundation.

In the email, Francis wrote: “Hopefully we are in time to avoid Mexicanization.”

The Mexican government formally complained about the remark during a meeting with the Holy See’s ambassador to Mexico and in a note of protest, saying the government was committed to battling drug cartels and that there was no benefit to “stigmatizing Mexico.”

In a statement Wednesday, the Vatican said the pope’s words were contained in a personal, informal email to Vera and that Francis had merely repeated a phrase that Vera had used.

“The pope intended only to emphasize the seriousness of the phenomenon of the drug trafficking that afflicts Mexico and other countries in Latin America,” said the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi. “It is precisely this importance that has made the fight against drug trafficking a priority for the government.”

It’s not the first time that Francis’ frank way of communicating has caused the Vatican a headache.

In January, Lombardi had to explain that the pope wasn’t justifying violence when, in response to the Paris terrorist attacks against satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, Francis said that someone who insults his mother could expect “a punch” in return.

Francis did his own damage control after he quipped that Catholics don’t need to breed “like rabbits,” subsequently praising big families as a gift from God in a public audience.

A Lottery You Can't Lose

Imagine that you have a low-paying job but still manage to save a little for your kids’ future every month. Then someone comes along and offers you a chance to win a cash prize. You just have to put your interest into a pool from which the prize is made. Would you do it? My bet is you would. Today’s interest rates are so low that you would be giving up a little for the chance to win a lot. That’s prize-linked savings in a nutshell, and it could spur a lot of people to save.

It is very encouraging to witness the increased interest in motivating low-income households to save and accumulate wealth around the nation. Scholars like Michael Sherraden have helped us understand how the lack of assets is one of the main factors preventing low-income families from upward economic mobility (read more about Sherraden’s work here). First, the Individual Development Accounts (IDAs), then the Children Savings Accounts (CSAs) and matched 529 college savings accounts, and now there is yet another exciting development: prized-linked savings (PLS).

PLS is a powerful idea based on the premise that savings can be made more fun and attractive when merged with the logic of the lottery. Compared to traditional savings accounts, PLS accounts do not earn interest. The interest accrued on all the accounts is pooled and periodically distributed as prizes to its participants. It is essentially a no-loss lottery.

PLS has the potential to kill two birds with one stone. You’ve probably heard the lottery referred to as the poor man’s tax. Low-income individuals invest large sums hoping to win the jackpot. In one of the poorest town in Massachusetts, the average resident spent $1,179 on lottery tickets in 2013 alone. With PLS, this amount would be saved and if lucky, the individual might still win a prize. PLS is also powerful because it has the potential to attract those who traditionally do not save. Harvard Prof. Peter Tufano (now Dean of the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School) has studied, tested, and promoted the idea with his organization Doorways to Dreams (D2D). He found that 56 percent of PLS participants were non-savers before joining such a program. When 44 percent of American households live in a state of persistent financial insecurity, any savings can make a big difference.

One important obstacle to establishing PLS in the United States is the law that limits lottery activities to the state-sanctioned lottery. But President Obama recently signed bipartisan legislation leaving it up to states to decide. Ten have already passed legislation allowing PLS at their banks, and now it seems that Massachusetts may be next. Massachusetts State Senator Benjamin Downing has recently put forward a proposal that would allow banks and credit unions to conduct savings lotteries. Now let’s see if the legislature and Governor Charlie Baker approve the changes that would make PLS a reality here in Massachusetts.

Solange Offers Awesome Reaction To Giuliana Rancic's Racist Hair Comments

We can always count on Solange Knowles to keep it real.

Shortly after Disney star Zendaya responded to the racially insensitive comments E! News Fashion Police host Giuliana Rancic made about her dreadlocks at the Oscars, the singer/DJ/model took to Twitter Tuesday night and posted this spot-on response:

Our feelings exactly.

And sadly she’s right — this isn’t the first time Beyoncé’s sister has been entangled in a situation involving her hair. Not only did InTouch compare her natural hair to Yorkipoo dog, but she’s also had her Afro patted down by the TSA and was largely criticized for rocking her curly tresses on her wedding day.

While Rancic has now apologized twice for her offensive comments, this situation further perpetuates the discussion and unfair scrutiny when it comes to Black women’s hair.

Writer and image activist Michaela Angela Davis sums it up perfectly in a recent interview with Refinery29 saying, “[Their comments] make it so clear how ignorant a lot of people are to the breadth of beauty that is American, and particularly that comes from Americans of color,” she said.

“New kinds of people are hitting the red carpet, from Viola Davis with [her] hair being natural, or Lupita, or locs on Ava DuVernay, and they have to adjust to the widening of the breadth of Black beauty.”

How Young Women Are Driving the Future of Space Entrepreneurship

Inventing new space technology can be a dubious proposition, especially for young women who identify as scientists and engineers rather than entrepreneurs. To be the one responsible for the awesome task of supporting future space missions, you need to focus on three things before conducting research: “what benefit your idea provides, how to create it and project funding.” Or so says Lilly Bulawa, one sister from the enterprising Chicks in Space trio that have turned to crowdfunding to send their latest science experiment, the Garden of ETON, to the International Space Station.

2015-02-24-0214151124a.jpgCredit: Sophie Sanchez

“It’s hard to find people my age that have common interests, but my sisters and I enjoy STEM challenges,” says the science minded Bulawa, who has already worked on a number of long term space exploration ideas with her sisters. “When we started this project we didn’t know where this was going to end up. It was a lot of trial and error, problem solving and putting our minds together.” Their research, a hydroponic plant growth system that relies on centripetal force to work in microgravity, almost ended there, until they met someone with industry experience and an alternative way to raise capital.

The number of young women space entrepreneurs is on the rise
From the inspiring example that is, Anousheh Ansari, to the brilliant satellite applications Fatima Dyczynski left as her legacy, the Chicks in Space are among great company. Overall, there has been a rise in female owned businesses, and the number of female entrepreneurs in the space industry is steadily growing. They are a reflection of the diversity and health that our current economy is experiencing.

Forbes recently looked at a study that shows higher performing companies with women in leadership roles do better financially than those with male dominated leadership. Even with these numbers and examples, it’s important to look at why young women are turning to entrepreneurship and how they are succeeding.

Why more young women are turning to entrepreneurship
Ideas, and the ability to pursue your own passions, are the driving forces behind most young women that decide entrepreneurship is the option for them. Bulawa’s sentiment, that young women with an idea should “take the initiative, and try our best to learn about space as a means to explain our world” is shared by Natalya Brikner, CEO and founder of Accion Systems, a propulsion tech company for new space industries.

Brikner also brought up the main reason so many young women are turning business owner, in a business world dominated by men where workplace advancement is difficult, and reveals that just because you are the boss, the challenges don’t end there. “I still get pushed around a bit by people trying to take my job. It’s uncomfortable and hard to look past, and I don’t believe that it would happen to a similarly-experienced male in my position.”

What female scientists can learn from entrepreneurs
To tackle the difficulties they face, gaining access to business capital being the biggest, female scientists and engineers can learn a lot from business entrepreneurs in any field. Space tech innovation and business intersect at so many points, making business knowledge an essential tool for any young woman scientist interested in enterprise. Says Brikner “I think people looked past my gender and inexperience level because of my education background; being a technical founder with a PhD was a huge advantage.”

After meeting DreamUp director, Patricia Mayes, Chicks in Space decided to utilize crowdfunding platform Experiment, in order to help overcome their biggest hurdle. Crowdfunding has driven the success of many new entrepreneurs who otherwise could not have realized substantial growth, and the Bulawa’s are hoping it’s the tool that will help them launch their experiment later this year. In taking advantage of these two platforms, both created to help students break barriers surrounding experimental research and traditional education opportunities, they are creating their success.

How to support young women entrepreneurs in the space industry
Both Bulawa and Brikner credit their mentors and a supportive network of like-minded peers for giving them the confidence to push forward with their ideas. “I tend to fall naturally into leadership positions and to develop trust among my colleagues, and both my advisors put a ton of opportunities in front of me to continue cultivating those tendencies.” says Brikner. Bulawa advises other young women to “reach out to people already working in the field you are interested in, because when they know you’re interested, they want to help you learn.”

According to Brikner, when it comes to space entrepreneurship, it’s important to remind the young women you mentor that “it’s a marathon and not a sprint, so make sure the underlying idea or technology is something you’re passionate about. Otherwise you’ll burn out, because it only gets harder.”

Baby Boomers In Awe Of Recreational Marijuana Stores

The prospect of medical marijuana for sale in your Illinois neighborhood may seem unreal.

But for a truly mind-blowing experience, even without trying the wares, consider a glimpse at the next step on the legalization continuum: its sale for recreational use.

The recreational use of pot became legal in Colorado in 2014. Which means that a ski vacation there now offers an additional kind of adventure.

With the recent measles outbreak in Disneyland being linked to largely unvaccinated districts in Southern California, it is apparent that we are in the midst of a time when misinformation is running rampant. Although anti-science sentiment has historically been found in highly religious and deeply conservative rural areas, these anti-vaxxers reside predominantly in affluent liberal communities like Marin County.

Additionally (and disappointingly), similar anti-science rhetoric is coming from prominent left-wing figures like liberal talk show host Bill Maher. As a liberal myself — and especially as a scientist — I find the present situation to be particularly disturbing.

There is indeed a real problem, but problems have solutions. And the first step to solving problems is to identify and understand them. With that in mind, below is a list of five reasons why some liberals are just as bad, or at least almost, as creationism-believing conservatives when it comes to spreading pseudoscience.

1. Homeopathy

2015-02-16-homeopathyiswater.jpg

Walk into a Whole Foods grocery store — which can be found in just about any over-privileged, predominantly white neighborhood — and you’re bound to find two things: overenthusiastic liberal extremists and homeopathic remedies for everything from the flu to cancer. Yes, I said the ‘C’ word, and yes, that should scare you.

These products do more than just steal people’s money. They often put them in real danger by suggesting that proven medical treatment might not be necessary, even in dire situations. In fact, many experts believe Steve Jobs could’ve better fought or even defeated cancer had he not spent a year testing out herbal remedies before choosing to undergo surgery, a decision he himself later regretted.

This is a billion dollar industry that profits exclusively from a widespread lack of science education — in particular a basic knowledge of physiology, health and medicine. Countless studies in peer-reviewed journals have shown these homeopathic quick fixes to work no better than placebos. Remember folks, being open-minded doesn’t entail giving fair attention to frauds and their scams, even if they are dressed like the harmless hippies we know and love.

2. New Age

2015-02-16-liberalnewagereligion.jpg
It is well known that new age-y, crystal-worshipping, astrology-believing loonies are almost always diehard liberals. What is it that these people actually believe anyway?

One popular idea is that each of us gives off certain positive or negative “energies” that can influence others nearby, as well as important events. Unsurprisingly, there is not one shred of scientific evidence that suggests any such mysterious energies exist.

Another common conviction is that we are all capable of “channeling” information from outside entities (spirits, aliens, the elements, etc.) during deep states of trance.

And to really confuse matters, new agers attempt to explain all of these magical occurrences using pseudoscientific jargon they’ve invented, which for some reason always references quantum physics. While the phenomena observed in quantum mechanical experiments definitely have very peculiar aspects, these certainly have nothing to do with supernatural healing or reaching your full potential.

It may not be obvious, but these quasi-religious beliefs from some on the left hurt the entire party. Progressives need to be able to stand up and harshly criticize Republicans for their anti-evolution stance, but how can they do so when a portion of them believe in myths and fantasies that are just as ridiculous? Shape up liberal kooks. Don’t let new age mumbo jumbo destroy the whole group’s credibility. You do not have a “vibration”, because that means nothing.

3. Anti-Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)

2015-02-16-ArsenicorganicnonGMO.jpg

For 20 years scientists have genetically modified foods (e.g., corn, soybean) to be more resistant to things like disease and insects, while richer in nutrients and healthier overall. Essentially, their genetic tweaks are creating superhero plants, which regrettably look more like scary mutants in the eyes of the fearful.

But this time the fearful predominantly consists of liberals rather than Fox News-obsessed conservatives. These people hold the belief that any gene-tinkerings will produce Franken-foods capable of causing illnesses and tumors. With only homeopathic remedies at their disposal, they have good reason to be extra paranoid of such things.

The liberal-driven anti-GMO movement is proof that poor decision-making rooted in irrational fear is not behavior restricted to those on the right. Despite overwhelming scientific evidence that genetically-altered foods are as safe as any, some ultra-environmentalist types want to see the GMO industry burn to the ground, quite literally. This is a great misfortune considering all the good that GM crops and their high yields could do for some very important liberal causes, like the global fight against hunger. You would think that those in support of greater spending on education would do a little bit more to educate themselves.

4. Anti-Vaccines

Out of all the anti-science movements being driven predominantly by liberals, none is more dangerous than that which claims vaccinations are harmful or unnecessary. Empirical evidence shows that each year vaccines prevent millions of illnesses and save hundreds of thousands of lives. This is supported by the fact that the recent slew of vaccine-preventable illness outbreaks all occurred specifically in those areas where people refused vaccinations.

So why then are prominent left-leaning celebrities choosing to take the kind of stance usually reserved for far-right conspiracy theorists?

It’s not just airheads like Jenny McCarthy either. Joining the crazies are some very seemingly rational people, like comedic liberal talk show host Bill Maher and actor Jim Carrey. Baffling, I know. An even less likely anti-vaxxer is Mayim Bialik from The Big Bang Theory (or Blossom to you ’80s babies), who not only plays a scientist on TV but also holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience in real life! These people surely aren’t dumb, so what’s going on here?

Essentially what is happening is that well-educated people think that because they hold a higher degree and have done a week’s worth of Google-ing, they know more than the bright minds who’ve dedicated their lives to understanding this very specific area of research.

To those people, look, I get it. The truth is that we as scientists don’t know everything. Fear is a reasonable first instinct when one is told that vaccines actually work by giving you a weakened version of the same virus it’s trying to prevent. But when the stakes are so high, you have to go with the side that science is on. Without having some additional knowledge inaccessible to the guys in lab coats, you can bet that the best conclusions come from the most informed. Science is unique in that it has no hidden agenda and is self-correcting. So when you haven’t really done your research but think you know something that the experts don’t, you can assume that your beliefs are motivated by hubris rather than the facts.

5. Alternative Therapies

2015-02-16-crystalhealing.jpg

Some popular alternative therapies within certain liberal communities include energy medicine, aromatherapy, Chinese acupuncture, and crystal healing. Hopefully I need not explain to the reader exactly why mystical energies, scents, tiny needles, or neat-looking crystals all fail to cure the sick.

As freakin’ hilarious as all of it sounds, it is no laughing matter. These rituals present the same grave danger as homeopathy, since individuals undergoing alternative therapies may avoid seeking out real medical help.

Don’t get me wrong about mind-body oriented practices. A little yoga and meditation can work wonders for ailments like chronic stress and even high blood pressure. But stretching and breathing techniques used to calm oneself are entirely different than putting a crystal under your pillow and expecting an ear infection to disappear overnight.

It’s ironic that these liberals scoff at the sheer absurdity of Christian faith healing when some of them hold beliefs in supernatural cures that are even more “out there.”

So there you have it. It seems that ignorance has no party affiliation, and that widespread gullibility is a serious problem in this country that must be addressed. Although the anti-science rhetoric coming from the right is ultimately a more destructive brand, the left’s is similarly counterproductive. For a country so seemingly advanced and progressive, we are still in the dark ages in a lot of respects.

It is tempting to think that all our problems could be solved by taking politicians on both sides out of the decision-making chairs and replacing them with scientists. Oh how fair and efficient the world would be if governing were based on reason and measurement. But it must also be guided by humanity and compassion, which requires all of society’s input. So although we needn’t all be scientists, we should each be empiricists.

Finally, it is important to note that science is not incompatible with spirituality. In fact, science can serve as a deeply inspirational source of the spiritual. But when beliefs contradict what is observed in reality, they must be discarded and supplanted with new, better explanations. When we are all able to come together under science and rationality, only then will we see real bipartisan progress.

Sex And The Older Woman

At 75 Sarah* seldom sees women her age held up by the wider world as attractive, let alone sexually desirable, but desire, she says, doesn’t fade with age.

“It’s not this high-octane compulsion that it used to be, but it’s not that it’s not there. Maybe it’s morphed into something a bit more subtle.”

Twice divorced and with her current partner for three years, Sarah says that while it’s largely accepted that men will continue to have sexual feelings as they age, the same isn’t true for older women.
