FTC Fining Apps That Claim To Be Able To Detect Melanoma

moledetective_1Apps are handy and thanks to the increasing amount of sensors embedded in our phones, our apps are becoming a lot more useful at detecting and measuring all kinds of things, but to be able to detect cancer via an app? Is that even possible? As it turns out some app developers are making that claim, much to the annoyance of the FTC.

The FTC has since brought up fines against the developers of two apps claiming to be able to detect melanoma in the user using the iPhone’s camera. The FTC alleges that these apps are making false claims, and thankfully it looks like both the apps – MelApp and Mole Detective – have since been removed from the iTunes App Store, although the latter is still available via Google Play for $4.99.

According to a statement released by the FTC, “The Federal Trade Commission has challenged marketers for deceptively claiming their mobile apps could detect symptoms of melanoma, even in its early stages. In two separate cases, marketers of MelApp and Mole Detective have agreed to settlements that bar them from continuing to make such unsupported claims. The agency is pursuing charges against two additional marketers of Mole Detective who did not agree to settle.”

It is unclear as to how big of a fine the developers behind the two apps will be facing, but hopefully it will be big enough to deter future apps making similar claims.

Sense Sleep Tracker Begins Shipping To Some Of Its Backers

sense 1Some of you guys might recall that back in July 2014, we reported on a sleep monitoring device called Sense. The device was launched on Kickstarter and blew past its initial goal of $100,000 and was meant to begin shipping to its backers in November, but unfortunately delays prevented it from going out on time.

The good news is that if you have backed the device, you will be pleased to learn that the company has recently announced that Sense units are starting to ship out to its backers, and that for those who did not back the project but would like to get their hands on it are able to do so where it will be priced at $129 each, with new orders expected begin shipping later this month.

As a quick recap for those who missed our report from last year, Sense is a sleep monitoring device that does more than the typical sleep tracker. It is able to listen out for loud noises, ambient light, temperature, and humidity, all of which could potentially affect your sleep and ultimately offers up much more comprehensive information than other trackers.

With the data Sense gives to its users, they will be able to adjust their environment accordingly, like turn up/down the air-con, turn off all the lights, and etc. so ensure a good night’s rest. All users will need is the main Sense device and a “Pill” which attaches to the pillow. The Pills can be bought separately if there is more than one user who would like to track their sleep.

Apple Dropping iTunes Sign-In Support For AOL Usernames

itunes aolPreviously if you had an AOL username, you could sign into the Apple iTunes App Store, iBooks Store, or the music store using your username as opposed to an Apple ID. However it looks like Apple has decided to put an end to that support which was revealed in a recently uploaded support document on Apple’s website.

According to the support document, Apple will be ending their support on the 31st of March, so for those who wish to maintain their access to Apple’s online stores, they will have to convert to an Apple ID before them. “Starting March 31, 2015, AOL will no longer allow customers to use their AOL Username (also known as an AOL Screen Name) to sign in to the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store. You must convert your AOL Username to an Apple ID in order to maintain access to the stores and to content you purchased previously.”

Now for those who are late to the party and who might have missed out on transitioning to an Apple ID before the deadline, fret not because it will not affect your iTunes purchases, it’s just that you simply will not be able to make future purchases until you transition to an Apple ID. We’re not sure why Apple has decided to end support, but perhaps they’re looking to unify all their accounts.

If you’re still using an AOL username to log into the iTunes App Store, you can begin the transition process by logging in using your AOL username and follow the onscreen instructions on how to proceed.

Afghanistan Avalanche Claims Dozens Of Lives, Homes

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An Afghan official says dozens of people are feared dead in an avalanche that buried some 60 homes in the northeastern Panjshir Valley.

Acting Gov. Abdul Rahman Kabiri said at least 30 people were killed and that rescuers were using their bare hands and shovels to try to reach survivors. Emergency officials could not immediately be reached to confirm the toll, which is expected to rise.

Large swathes of Afghanistan have been covered in snow over the past 24 hours as a major storm has interrupted an otherwise mild and dry winter. Avalanches are common in Afghanistan’s mountainous north.

Jailhouse Interview: Why 18-Year-Old Says He Went On The Run With 13-Year-Old Girlfriend (VIDEO)

Dalton Hayes, 18, and his 13-year-old girlfriend made headlines in January when they allegedly embarked on an interstate crime spree. Dubbed the modern “Bonnie and Clyde” by the media after they left their small, western Kentucky hometown and allegedly evaded police for two weeks, Dalton maintains he only left Kentucky to protect his girlfriend, who he says told him she was being abused at home, an allegation her family absolutely and completely denies.

In the video above, Dalton tells Dr. Phil, “I want people out there to know that I did not do it to hurt her; I did it to keep her safe. Because not only then did I love her, but today, I still love her. I want people to know that I did not do it against her will. I did not force her to leave. She’s the one who said she was running, and I could not let her go by herself.”

Tune into Dr. Phil on Wednesday for his entire interview with Dalton. Check here to see where you can watch.
