‘NASCAR’ Race On The Moon In The Pipeline?

lunar-beamIt seems that two competitors in the Google Lunar XPrize competition have decided that working together is far better than working against one another, and they have teamed up with hopes that they are able to stage the very first car race not on earth . but rather, in outer space. Now how about that for some sort of crazy idea?

The United States’ Astrobotics and Japan’s Hakuta teams made an announcement earlier this week that they intend to send their robot rovers all the way to the moon using the very same SpaceX flight some time in 2016. Astrobotics has already come up with a lander that is known as the Griffin which will allow the delivery of the pair to the surface, and these two will have the intention to vie for part of the $20 million grand prize pie.

In order to be declared as the victor, these solar-powered off-roaders will first need to make a trek of at least 500 meters – and apart from that, they will have to stream High Definition video all the way back to earth. Astrobotics CEO John Thornton claims that his company has a vision of a “’NASCAR on the Moon’ scenario, but I am not too sure whether the lack of speed as opposed to an actual NASCAR race is going to spice things up?

Huawei Introduces First LTE-Enabled Smartband

huawei-45g-smartbandHuawei has just introduced their very first smartband that will be able to deliver LTE connectivity where wearable technology is concerned. Of course, there is more than meets the eye, since this particular band will be able to support Huawei’s 4.5G network that is all set to roll out commercially from next year onward. This particular band is capable of tracking a user’s fitness level as well as perform measurements of the wearer’s heart rate.

Should it happen to be similar to that of Huawei’s existing smartband, it ought to then arrive with a 1.4” OLED display, NFC and Bluetooth connectivity, and is also resistant to both dust and water. Don’t go about bringing this while you dive though, as it probably would not be able to withstand the pressure. This device will also come with an integrated LTE-M chip that is produced by Neul, a company that was picked up by Huawei in the previous year.

Huawei claims that their 4.5G LTE network is able to deliver data speeds that are as high as 1GB/sec and will be able to assist drones and enable Virtual Reality, now how about that for being truly versatile? This .5G pipeline more or less represents the very first time that a mobile network is focused on both people and things, as it supports up to 100K per cell connections via LTE-M, which is 100 times that of 4G.

Panasonic Delivers TVs With Freeview Play Support

freeview-play-panaIt looks like the folks over at Panasonic are pretty busy today, having rolled out a Firefox OS-powered TV, not to mention support for Freeview Play to boot. Just in case you are scratching your head as to what Freeview is all about, it happens to be the UK’s most-watched TV service, where it offers up to 60 TV channels, where there will be a dozen high definition versions available, not to mention being accompanied by 25 radio stations.

This brand new Freeview Play service will also expand its offering by a considerable margin, which would include the addition of on-demand content and catch-up TV, not to mention a certain level of app support. Freeview Play can be enjoyed without any additional charge at all, it will be similar to that of the rest of the Freeview service, where you will have to own new hardware before enjoying it.

Hence, the first TVs in the market that are capable of supporting Freeview Play would be those from Panasonic, which would open up access to the platform in its 2015 range of VIERA televisions. Guy North, managing director of Freeview, claims that “Freeview Play will put viewers back in control, and we’re delighted that Panasonic is our first TV launch partner.”

Oh God, This Horrifying Sidewalk Sinkhole

If you’re a person with irrational fears of urban horror stories, stay far far away from this real-life video of two people falling into a sidewalk hole in Seoul, where sinkholes are a mysterious and apparently growing problem in the city thanks in part (maybe?) to super tall skyscrapers. They step off a bus—only to have the ground literally fall away. Luckily, they somehow escape with only minor injuries.

The Most Common Numbers in 10 Million Passwords

The primary purpose of a password is to serve as an unique verification identifier for a given user. Ideally, the password for a given website or service should be both random and unique; if the letters and/or numbers in the password follow any patterns, then they might be easier to guess by an intruder. For example, someone may put their birth year such as “1987” or “1988” in their password, which makes the passwords easier to remember, but consequently easier to break.
