Do Crossword Puzzles Really Help Prevent Alzheimer's?

Yesterday morning I arrived to visit Angela, one of the three ladies with Alzheimer’s I volunteer to visit each week. I found her sitting at her beautiful, ornate dining room table, which was overflowing with books and art supplies. Dressed in a pale pink sweat suit, she was deeply absorbed in a crossword puzzle, which she was filling in with her ever so pale handwriting.

I often find her engaged in this activity. I don’t know if she works the puzzles because it’s something she’s always enjoyed or if a friend or family member encourages her to do them to keep her brain active.

Martha, another of “My Ladies,” can also often be found deep in the process of doing a crossword. She confirms that it was something she previously enjoyed. She adds that, “my friend, Emily, who’s in charge of me, brings me books of puzzles.” Mostly easy ones. Martha comments that the New York Times crosswords are “nearly danged impossible to complete.”

Hundreds of articles have mentioned that keeping the brain active, including working crossword puzzles, playing cards or learning new things, can help ward off Alzheimer’s or slow it’s decline in a person who already has the illness.

For example, there’s a brief entry about this topic on the Alzheimer’s Association’s website. It says, “Research has found that keeping the brain active seems to increase its vitality and may build its reserves of brain cells and connections. You could even generate new brain cells.”

The entry continues by saying that people with a higher level of education appear to be protected against Alzheimer’s, concluding that “people who keep their minds active throughout their lives have lower amounts of a protein that forms the beta amyloid plaques, which are a hallmark of the disease.”

I might mention in passing that my personal experience hasn’t borne this out. As I recount in my award-winning book, Come Back Early Today: A Memoir of Love, Alzheimer’s and Joy, Ed, my beloved Romanian life partner of 30 years, had two PhD’s and a law degree. Nonetheless, he developed Alzheimer’s. What’s more, three of his highly educated colleagues also had the illness.

And I recently found a report stating that this there’s no evidence to support the commonly held belief that crossword puzzles forestall Alzheimer’s. An article published on the University of North Carolina School of Medicine website says, “Many people believe doing crossword puzzles helps prevent Alzheimer’s disease, but there’s no scientific evidence to support this idea.”

In this article, Philip Sloane, MD, MPH, a professor of family medicine at the university, said, “Unfortunately, there is no strong evidence that such activities actually prevent the disease. I’d be surprised if it actually makes a difference.”

A WebMD entry on this topic, “Brain Exercises and Dementia,” is a little more positive, not denying or confirming the link, but merely stating, “We need more studies to know for sure.”

Given the conflicting reports I decided to take a look at the scientific evidence. I found several articles describing various recent research studies. Among these was an excellent, comprehensive article in the journal Clinical Correlations, the online medical journal of NYU Langone Medical Center. It reviewed 11 different research studies on this topic.

After reviewing each scientific study, the author presents this as the bottom line: “Leisure activities such as crossword puzzles, card games, and reading provide an avenue to stimulate the mind, thus delaying the onset of dementia.”

The article concludes by stating, “These activities should be recommended to our healthy elderly patients. In the future, targeted computerized cognitive training in the form of video games may accompany a daily aspirin in our armamentarium as we strive to prevent disease.”

So get out your pencils and go buy yourself some crossword puzzles. There’s now clear scientific evidence that it actually does help.

You CAN Have Your Cake And Eat It Too! Go Ahead — Reinvent Your Life — Just How You Want it!

Since it’s my birthday week, it’s quite fitting to share this post … as I will be having my cake and eating it too!!

“You CAN have your cake and eat it too!” We’ve all heard that expression throughout our lives and many have come to accept it. But have you ever thought about what it really means, and why CAN’T you have your cake and eat it too?

Think about it — the expression implies that you can have your cake — but what? You’re supposed to just stare at it and NOT eat it?

When it comes to Life Reinvention — I’m a firm believer that you MUST have your cake, and you MUST eat it too!!

You are entitled to have what you want in life — you have the power and your responsibility is to use it, own it and grab life by the horns and make it what you want.

No wonder so many people are lost and stuck in a life that they don’t want to be living. They’ve been brought up believing that they are not to indulge in the things in life that make them happy and that you can only have “so much” but not the whole enchilada!

That’s absurd! Why on earth can you not do what you love, be with who you want to be, create the hobbies and interests that you want to cultivate, build the life that is your optimal existence. If you’re not hurting others, and what you want is not at someone else’s expense, you deserve to pursue all that makes you happy.

Are you afraid to go after it? Do you think you may not succeed? You won’t be able to attain it? Is the risk not worth the reward?

You need to prioritize yourself and begin to create the framework for what you want. These can be small reinventions — baby steps towards the bigger goal. But start setting your sights on what you want from your life and be clear about how to get there. I often talk about creating that roadmap — without it you just won’t get there or be able to chip away at the obstacles with clarity if you can’t define the path for yourself.

You want to have your cake AND eat it too? Then go for it!

Here’s what I do to stay the course, after I’ve identified something that I want to embrace (or tackle) as a new part of “project me”… Every night I go to bed, thinking about the few major things I want to accomplish the next day (or on Sundays, for the next week — in which case I write it down). Sometimes they are personal goals, some are business goals and tactical plans … Some are family plans and projects … I’m not a “type A” person, or so I’d like to think, but I find it keeps my head organized and clutter free, and it helps me get through the things I want.

We all juggle a lot and keeping all the plates in the air is a fine skill — fun if you really master the art — a daily challenge — but fun, nonetheless! Weekends are for the loftier goals but squeezing in some of the soft and precious stuff into the middle of a work week is good for the soul. Sit back in the middle of a busy day — close your eyes — take a deep breath and clear your mind. Allow yourself that focus and clarity to indulge and get back to “you”.

When was the last time you stopped and put yourself at the front of the line? You’re entitled…

Yes, you’re entitled to have your cake and go ahead … EAT IT TOO!!!

UberEATS delivers users lunch in Barcelona

Uber is, in the general public’s eye, that newfangled way to get a ride using your phone. Some cities have banned it, others have battled it, and some have welcomed it despite fierce protests from residents. Still, they all have something in common — they view Uber as a way to get a ride. LG Watch Urbane Product Video Emphasizes Its Luxury Status

Close to two weeks ago, LG took the wraps off their latest wearable in the form of the LG Watch Urbane which is admittedly a rather classy-looking device, and a recent video released by LG to promote the Watch Urbane certainly seems to highlight all of that. As you can see in the video above, LG has emphasized how luxurious the device is, and how one is able to customize it to their liking, mainly in the form of interchangeable watch straps.

The good news is that there are no proprietary parts as far as watch straps are concerned, meaning that if you have a nice leather or steel band that you’d like to use, you should be able to use it, as long as it is of the 22mm variety. LG is also highlighting how the face of the watch can be changed to suit your needs, ranging from a very classic looking analog watch to that of a more modern digital interface.

LG has yet to mention how much the LG Watch Urbane will cost or when it will be released, but hopefully more details will be shared with us at MWC 2015. In terms of hardware, in case you missed the earlier announcement, the LG Watch Urbane is pretty much the same device as the LG G Watch R. The hardware will be similar and the main difference is in its design, which presumably will be reflected in its price as well.

Apple Patent Allows For Screen & App Data Sharing Over FaceTime

apple patent collabOne of the perks of using software like Google Docs is that it allows for live collaboration between users, so edits and changes made to the document will be reflected in real time, thus allowing for teams to work together on a singular document at the same time. Now wouldn’t it be cool if such collaborative features were available on iOS devices?

As it turns out, Apple might be thinking of something similar. According to the folks at AppleInsider, they have recently come across a patent by Apple that suggests that data sharing and collaboration could eventually be part of iOS. The patent suggests a way for users to share data in real time rather than emailing information back and forth, which according to the patent could lead to a lost in time and in some cases, money.

The patent also talks about how the app and data can be overlaid on top of a FaceTime call, so if you want to hear and see the person you’re collaborating with, this could be one of the ways to facilitate that. As you can see in the image above, such collaboration might not necessarily be limited to productivity as parents could even read and interact with an ebook from a remote location.

Of course there’s no way of telling if this patent will eventually be made a reality or if it is simply Apple brainstorming for ideas, but it sounds like a pretty handy tool and it would be nice to see more desktop collaborative features make their way onto mobile.

Apple Reportedly Acquires Audio Software Developer Camel Audio

garagebandCould Apple be thinking about stepping up their game in the audio software department, like with GarageBand and Logic Pro X? Perhaps, and there has been recent evidence to support the theory. Earlier this year audio software developer Camel Audio announced that they would be shutting down, but they did not specify why.

However recent evidence has surfaced that seems to suggest that Apple could have acquired the company, thus leading to their shutdown. Neither Apple nor Camel Audio have confirmed this, but if anything we can probably expect Apple to make some kind of boilerplate statement regarding their acquisition anyway.

So where is the evidence? For starters, Camel Audio’s address is now the same address as Apple UK’s offices. Secondly, the company’s board of directors has been updated. All the directors have since been removed and replaced with one person – Heather Joy Morrison who happens to be a member of Apple’s legal team. If this doesn’t sound like an acquisition, we don’t know what does.

The company is responsible for creating software such as Alchemy and while we have no idea what Apple plans on doing with them, like we said earlier chances are that they might be folded into the teams behind Apple’s other audio products.
