The Game:ref Could Help Put An End To Cheating In Video Games

gamerefCheating in video games, while frowned upon, does happen unfortunately even in professional settings as we’re sure that cheaters and hackers are constantly working to come up with ways that they can cheat without being caught. However software engineer David Titarenco has apparently had enough of cheaters and has come up with a device that could potentially prevent software-based cheats.

The device is called Game:ref and as you can see in the image above, it will act as a middle-man between your mouse and your computer to help detect input cheats, such as aimbots or bots in general where the movement from your mouse should correlate with your actions on the screen, but if you have a bot running the show, the correlation is obviously off.

Speaking to Polygon, Titarenco said, “What cheats tend to do is they screw up this correlation… the aimbot sort of aims for you, so there’s an artificial movement that happens in the game, that you’re not making with your real hand.” Now while getting the hardware to be used by tournament organizers could be tricky, the fact that it is meant to be sold as a consumer product could also allow communities to be created where only gamers with the hardware are allowed to play together.

However given that the device is expected to retail for around $50-$70, we can imagine that not many gamers are willing to shell out that kind of cash for it, but perhaps tournament organizers could see it as a worthwhile investment, especially given that there have been several cheating-related scandals as of late.

CyanogenMod 12S For OnePlus One Pegged For Release In March

oneplus-01If you’re a OnePlus One owner looking forward to getting your hands on Android 5.0 Lollipop, it seems that you won’t have wait much longer. A recent tweet by the company’s CEO revealed that they are planning a release of CyanogenMod 12S in March. He claims that this will be a more stable build that what was previously released.

We reported earlier this month that CyanogenMod 12S for the OnePlus One had entered testing and we guess it was not stable enough for the company to release it just yet. As one user points out, this basically puts them over the 3 month promised time frame, but we suppose better late than never, right? No one wants a buggy release after all!

In fact we have to say that the release of CyanogenMod 12S for the OnePlus One is pretty good news, especially given the debacle and falling out that both companies had with each other over in India where Cyanogen Inc. partnered up with Micromax, ultimately ditching OnePlus One owners in the region.

That being said OnePlus’ CEO also mentioned in the tweet that a stable build of OxygenOS, the company’s recently announced operating system, could also be seeing a release in March. No specific dates have been mentioned but we’ll keep our eyes peeled and update you guys accordingly.

Sprint Teases Their Samsung Galaxy S6 As Well

Samsung-Galaxy-S6-Sprint-Teaser-620x215Just yesterday we saw teasers for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6 from both AT&T and T-Mobile, with the colors of the phones representing the colors of the carrier. Given that the Galaxy S6 is a flagship handset and will most likely be arriving on all major carriers, Sprint too has teased their version of the Galaxy S6, this time sporting a yellow color.

All the teasers are pretty much of the same image so we reckon that eventually Verizon could release a teaser of their own and if we had to venture a guess, a red glow would probably be what they’ll be going for. By now it is safe to assume that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6 will feature a curved display, but the question now is whether or not there will curved displays on either side of the phone remains to be seen.

There have also been rumors suggesting more than one handset – the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S Edge with the latter featuring the curved displays, but perhaps the rumors were wrong and we could simply be looking at a single device. A more recent teaser from Samsung has also indicated that the rumors of a 5.1-inch display could be false, and that it might actually be bigger (earlier rumors pegged it at 5.5-inches).

In any case more information will be made available this Sunday upon its official announcement, so be sure to check back with us then for all the official details.

HTC Ireland Teases Bigger BoomSound Speakers For The HTC One M9

htc-one-review-m8-labshot-21The upcoming HTC One M9 is a phone that many are looking forward to. The handset is said to feature a new design and based on leaked renders, it seems that HTC has done some redesigning of the BoomSound front-facing stereo speakers as well, but did HTC merely change the grills or were there changes made under the hood?

Chances are the latter is more likely, at least according to a recent tweet by HTC Ireland who seemed to suggest in a video that the HTC One M9 could come with bigger/louder BoomSound speakers. Assuming the renderings are accurate, it doesn’t seem like they are physically bigger but perhaps the technology has been upgraded.

Previously with the HTC One M8, the company partnered with Harman/Kardon for the sound technology, and there were rumors about HTC possibly working with Bose, but unfortunately it seems that those rumors were quickly shot down by Bose themselves. Apart from teasing its speaker size, not much else about the upcoming handset is known to us save for the rumors.

In any case HTC will be revealing all officially come 1st of March at their MWC 2015 event, so if you’d like to see what HTC has in store for us with the HTC One M9, do check back then.

Chromebook Pixel 2 “Confirmed” In Pulled Google Video

chromebook-pixel-review-mainWhen it comes to Chromebooks, for the most part they look alright, but Google’s Chromebook Pixel from 2013 probably took the cake in terms of design which has us wondering what Google could have in store for us in future releases. Now if you’re wondering if a Chromebook Pixel 2 could be in the works, recent evidence has surfaced pointing towards its existence.

The evidence came in the form of a video where Google executives reportedly confirmed that existence of the laptop, but unfortunately that video has since been made private. In the video, Renee Niemi, who runs Android and Chrome for Work and Education at Google, was quoted as saying, “We do have a new Pixel coming out and it will be coming out soon.”

Niemi goes on to add, “We will be selling it… but I just have to set your expectations: this is a development platform…This is really a proof of concept. We don’t make very many of these—we really don’t. And our developers and our Googlers consume 85 percent of what we produce. But yes, we do have a new Pixel coming out.”

Unfortunately at the moment not much else is known about the new Chromebook Pixel 2, however a recent rumor has suggested that the device could be a 2-in-1 computer which would allow it to operate as a tablet that runs on Android, or as a laptop that is powered by Chrome OS. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but hopefully we will learn more about the Chromebook Pixel 2 in the near future.

Marijuana Is Officially Legal In Alaska

Marijuana is now legal for adults in Alaska.

Alaska on Tuesday becomes the third U.S. state to end prohibition of marijuana, officially putting into effect Ballot Measure 2, approved by 53 percent of state voters in November.

Alaskans age 21 and older may now legally possess up to one ounce of marijuana, grow as many as six marijuana plants in their homes (with no more than three flowering), and possess any additional marijuana produced by those plants.

Shops selling legal recreational marijuana aren’t likely to open until 2016, after the state legislature establishes a regulatory framework. State lawmakers have begun introducing legislation to that end.

“State laws allowing adults to use marijuana are becoming less and less of a novelty,” said Mason Tvert, communications director for drug policy reform group Marijuana Policy Project. “It won’t be long before it’s the rule instead of the exception nationwide. Colorado and Washington are proving that regulating marijuana works, and soon Alaska will, too.”

The Marijuana Policy Project, a backer of the Alaska ballot measure, is launching a public education campaign reminding marijuana users to “consume responsibly,” with ads that read: “With great marijuana laws comes great responsibility.”

“Most adults use marijuana for the same reasons most adults use alcohol,” Tvert said. “We want them to keep in mind that it carries the same responsibilities.”

Voters in Alaska, Oregon and Washington, D.C., passed similar marijuana laws last year, joining Colorado and Washington state, which legalized recreational marijuana in 2012 and opened retail shops in 2014.

Oregon’s law is scheduled to go into effect later this year. D.C.’s law, which prohibits retail sales, is expected to take effect later this week, when a congressional review period expires.

Marijuana remains illegal under federal law and states that have proceeded with legalization have been able to do so because of Department of Justice guidance that urges federal prosecutors to refrain from targeting state-legal marijuana operations.

Despite the conflicted federal stance, legal marijuana is the fastest-growing industry in the U.S., according to a recent report from industry analyst ArcView Group. At least 10 more states are considering legalizing marijuana by 2016. By 2020, there could be as many as 18 states where recreational marijuana is legal.

When regulated marijuana sales begin next year in Alaska, the industry is likely to generate millions in tax revenue. According to a recent study, as much as $8 million in marijuana taxes could flow into state coffers in the first year of sales, with more than $20 million projected by 2020.

Cody Phillip Gintz Accused Of Robbing Girl Scouts To Feed His Heroin Habit

A man who says he was trying to get cash to pay for drugs allegedly robbed a Girl Scout troop on Sunday as they sold cookies outside a supermarket in San Jose, California.

Cody Phillip Gintz, 23, is accused of grabbing the troop’s cash box, which contained $600, from a table outside of a Safeway.

At first, a 10-year-old Girl Scout tried to hold onto the cash box, but let go after a brief struggle, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

As the suspect drove away, one of the Girl Scouts managed to take down the license plate number of his Ford Bronco and called police, CBS San Francisco reported.

Just moments later, rookie police officer Joseph Ferrante spotted the robbery suspect’s vehicle and, with the help of backup, pulled it over in a “high-risk felony car stop.”

Gintz was arrested and charged with strong arm robbery. In a jailhouse interview to NBC Bay Area, he admitted to stealing the money to buy drugs.

Normally, I would never try this,” Gintz said. “But I was desperate, so I tried.”

The Girl Scouts were selling the cookies to raise money for a water conservation service project. In response to their plight, the police officers not only returned the stolen money, but bought an additional $240 in cookies and donated $60 in cash to the troop, the Mercury News reported.

“It was a great gesture on the part of the officers and a really traumatic experience for the Girl Scout troop,” Officer Albert Morales, a police spokesman, told the newspaper. “Hopefully they’re recovering and it doesn’t have a lasting effect.”

Gintz, whose little sister was once in the Girl Scouts, said he wanted to apologize.

“I definitely feel bad about it,” Gintz told NBC Bay Area. “I would definitely tell them I’m sorry.”
