Stephen Hawking Warns That Aggression Could 'Destroy Us All'

Forget doomsday asteroids, global plagues and super volcanoes. British theoretical physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking says we’re facing a much more immediate threat — and it’s our own behavior.

The human failing I would most like to correct is aggression,” Hawking told contest winner Adaeze Uyanwah, according to the Independent. “It may have had survival advantage in caveman days, to get more food, territory or a partner with whom to reproduce, but now it threatens to destroy us all.”

Uyanwah, a 24-year-old from California, won VisitLondon.com’s “Guest of Honor” contest. The prize package included a tour of London’s Science Museum with Hawking.

While being shown around, Uyanwah asked Hawking which human shortcoming he would most like to change, and which trait he’d enhance.

Hawking chose aggression and warned that a nuclear war could end civilization and possibly the human race. We need to replace aggression with empathy, which “brings us together in a peaceful loving state,” he said.

The subject of “The Theory of Everything” also told her that the future of man lies beyond Earth.

“I believe that the long-term future of the human race must be space and that it represents an important life insurance for our future survival, as it could prevent the disappearance of humanity by colonizing other planets,” Hawking said, according to the Cambridge News.

Hawking said putting humans on the moon “changed the future of the human race in ways that we don’t yet understand.”

“It hasn’t solved any of our immediate problems on planet Earth,” Hawking said. “But it has given us new perspectives on them and caused us to look both outward and inward.”

Uyanwah said meeting Hawking will stay with her for the rest of her life.

“It’s incredible to think that decades from now, when my grandchildren are learning Stephen Hawking’s theories in science class, I’ll be able to tell them I had a personal meeting with him and heard his views first hand,” Uyanwah said, according to The Daily Mail. “It’s something I’ll never forget.”

How has your life experience made you the leader you are today?
I spent much of my 20’s exploring and attempting not only to figure out who I was but where my strengths lied. I never felt rooted to any one industry or career path. What seemed like a hazy focus or a dissatisfaction with my options (or lack thereof) at the time I would later discover was really a need to build something I believed in from the ground up. I hadn’t yet found a place career wise where I felt that I belonged, or that I was given the opportunity to thrive, sometimes that lack or opportunity forces you to go and create your own, because you really have no other recourse and in retrospect I’m grateful for that.

How has your previous employment experience aided your tenure at MyHauteCloset?
My first job in the fashion industry was Personal Assistant and Website Administrator for an Outerwear Designer at his showroom in NYC. He was tough as nails and extremely eccentric, it was definitely my boot camp “Devil Wears Prada” initiation into the industry. I also went on to Intern while attaining my degree for the MAGIC Show in the Global Sourcing Department, the PR & Marketing Department of the Kellwood Company, as well as an International Buying Internship for BCBG Max Azria. There was a lot of good, bad and ugly but I loved being able to dip my toe into the pool of so many varying corporate cultures while learning the ins and outs of such different career paths. Internships really provided me with a chance to take the best of all of those key learnings and apply them into operating my business. You take the best of and whatever doesn’t work, chalk it up to a learning experience/character building.

What have the highlights and challenges been during your tenure at MyHauteCloset?
I started a Luxury business with a $3000 investment ($500 for site build and $2500 for a high quality DSLR camera to shoot product (not that I knew how to shoot) and an Instagram account. I completely relied on building an organic following of savvy socially connected women to both curate and sell product to. Essentially, everyone thought it was a cute pet project. I had no tech experience, eCommerce experience or any idea what I was in for, but knew that there were other women like me who liked to mix high and low, affordable clothing items with luxury bags, shoes & accessories so I shared bits of my life and personal style and quickly built a rapport with some seriously amazing women. Being a Solopreneur was not without it’s set of challenges including building trust and having to take on every role from managing every social media account, answer every email query, logistics, and photography/editing/copywriting for every item on site. I had many many “mini burnouts” and am constantly concerned with scalability.

What advice can you offer to women who want to start their own business?
DO NOT wait for the encouragement, praise, validation or permission to begin from anyone. Peers, family or otherwise. Just start. Maybe you don’t have that perfect on paper VC buzzworthy business plan. So what!? Learn as you go, push yourself to commit to the time needed to bring your vision to fruition. Get creative to launch should you not be one of the fortunate few to have initial investment, it’s what will build your tenacity and endurance necessary to be an Entrepreneur. Seek mentors, I didn’t have many who I knew personally but sought out women whose stories I found personally inspiring and whose business ethic I wanted to emulate. Never stop educating yourself and learning, I sincerely feel that nothing is ever wasted every job, failure, misstep will help you to develop the thick skin needed to launching your own venture.

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned in your career to date?
Stop doubting and questioning the journey. We are always in a rush to reach this milestone, to earn this much, to push to this level of sales, followers, job title, what have you. In that pursuit of looking over “there” we miss what we’ve accomplished so far, and once you stop appreciating and staying grounded in where you are you’re no longer present. You can’t be on autopilot when running a business, especially in the fast paced digital environment that businesses sink or swim in and there will be days where you fall into the autopilot trap, but I’ve realized that you have to shake it off, and trust in the process, that’s really when the good stuff happens career and otherwise.

How do you maintain a work/life balance?
I’m a workaholic. Ironically I just finished reading “Thrive” and realized that I am always what Arianna Huffington describes as feeling “Time deficient”. I don’t think it was until experiencing my pregnancy that I learned to step away from the computer, text, or whatever distraction and have a catch up lunch with a friend, enjoy a day of doing absolutely nothing in particular with my husband or take mid day siesta which I never would’ve been caught dead doing pre-pregnancy. Working 15 hour days aren’t best for your business or your personal life, you have to learn to allocate “you time” and not go into panic mode thinking you need to be on 24/7. My current pregnancy really forced me to reevaluate how I lived my life and how askew my priorities were.

What do you think is the biggest issue for women in the workplace?
Many of us still walk on eggshells and are afraid of how we will be perceived for speaking up. We are “yes” women by nature, and know it is frowned upon to be considered too ambitious because we are aware of the double standard that women face in the work place. I think gender inequality (equal pay, breaking the glass ceiling, paid maternity leave, sexism, negotiating salary) is still a huge issue, and one that we will continue having to consciously have a dialogue about in order to keep progressing.

How has mentorship made a difference in your professional and personal life?
Truth be told I didn’t have mentors that I knew personally when launching my business, I relied heavily on books by Seth Godin, Gary Vaynerchuk, Eric Ries, and various media outlets/news sources such as Mashable, TechCrunch, and Fast Company to name a few. I was ravenous for information an inspiration because I wasn’t exposed to it in my every day life. Again I feel like the lack of mentorship/opportunity forced me to attempt to create and carve out a place for myself, and it was really just training for having to figure out the ins and outs of business on my own as this is what the beginnings of Entrepreneurship is, being a self-starter.

Which other female leaders do you admire and why?
I admire Sheryl Sandberg immensely. She plugged away in an industry where women were such a minority and has reached some serious heights in her career while inspiring other women with her candidness in the process. Her book “Lean In” was so honest and empowering. Marie Forleo is another woman who I am just in awe of. She has an addicting YouTube Channel mentoring would-be entrepreneurs and business owners with a combo of infectious humor and really solid advice. She’s worked with Oprah, Richard Branson and also participates in Philanthropic work. I also admire Sophia Amoruso Founder and CEO of NastyGal/Author of #Girlboss. Her book echoed how I felt most of my life until I found my path. She was a total misfit and was so open about her string of odd jobs and lack of direction until finding her passion and massive success with Nastygal.com. She has now launched a foundation which provides financial grants to budding entrepreneurs seeking to pave a way for themselves in music, fashion and the arts. I tend to be inspired by women who not only have accomplished career success but give back in some capacity turning their success into a resource for those who want to pursue their dreams. We need more of that, I hope to do the same.

What do you want MyHauteCloset to accomplish in the next year?
We’re currently in the process of making MyHauteCloset not only an eCommerce site that offers pre-loved Luxury items at a steal but a destination site for fashion features, interviews and more. We are also looking to add verticals such as Men’s items and possibly Home and Baby at some point as well.

Women in Business Q&A: Sherri French, Founder, spbang

Working in the automotive industry for the past 17 years, Sherri French with her family has had the opportunity for 11 years to live between Asia and Europe. While living in China, she would daily pack lunches for her kids, husband and herself. She was tired of throwing out plastic bags nightly that were returned home in lunch boxes. She then moved onto fabric reusable snack bags that had the cutest patterns but were a nightmare to clean. They would be smelly over time and she couldn’t imagine throwing them in the laundry with other clothing items!

With an idea, she went to one of her closest friends who is automotive plastics expert. Working in quality in the automotive industry, she wanted to create a product that was made of food safe material but in a bag form. Using automotive processes and systems over and eight month period of trial and error and testing, spbang was born! While production originally started in China, they have already moved production to a factory in Michigan for a Made In USA product!

How has your life experience made you the leader you are today?
I have worked in automotive industry around the world and have been afforded experiences that I never expected while growing up in Canada. Working in different countries, you quickly learn that ‘the same’ does not always apply. You learn how to manage people and work with them in so many different ways. I had a position in quality, so while I was not responsible for manufacturing products, I had to make sure systems and procedures were in place to protect the product’s integrity. There were always obstacles; whether it was culture or manufacturing issues, I needed to have problem solving skills to overcome any problems. I’m also a mother of 2 girls (13 and 7) so there is always negotiation going on in our home and as a parent, I need to make sure I am a positive leader for my children to ensure they make the right choices in life.

What have the highlights and challenges been during your tenure at spbang?
I certainly have had both highlights and challenges in my first year of business at spbang. When we were first testing our bags, I had my youngest daughter come home after trying our reusable snack bags in her lunch and she asked to bring them for her entire class as everyone was begging for them! It’s also amazing to me to see my bags on the shelves of over 60 retailers around the world which is a huge highlight for me. It still amazes both my husband and I that our bags have received national press without the aid of any PR firm. What was a struggle was transitioning the company from China to the USA in the first six months of business. This included moving our entire production process that I expected to be much easier than reality. While I get a lot of support from my family, there is so much demand on my time as the marketing, PR, shipping and sales person. Essentially the company is a one person show and it requires me to wear many hats. Some days I’m shipping bags, some days I’m meeting with retailers. Balancing all of those demands as well as taking care of my family isn’t always easy.

What advice can you offer to women who want to start their own business?
Anyone can do it! Leverage your relationships and build a network of people who can help support you on things you are not strong with and utilize their expertise.

How do you maintain a work/life balance?
I never have balance and I think if you actually admit that then you are in a good place. Organization is the most important thing in our home as I struggle to maintain peace. Every night I have lunches packed and clothes laid out for everyone so there is nothing to think about in the morning. The swings in work and life ultimately balance out at some point, but there are huge swings that require a great deal of patience and organization.

What do you think is the biggest issue for women in the workplace?
Finding your voice and using it, especially in a male dominated industry such as automotive. In many cases I think it’s an advantage being a woman as there are so many business advantages and groups that support women.

How has mentorship made a difference in your professional and personal life?
I have been very fortunate to have interacted with wonderful people in both my work and personal life. I believe the opportunities to observe people in action and to discuss various situations with them have been priceless. Although I have not had ‘formal’ mentors, I have definitely been mentored throughout my life. Through observing and talking with my unofficial mentors, I have learned a great deal about perception versus reality, communication and managing people and crisis situations. I have been able to use the lessons in both my personal and professional lives, which I believe ultimately makes me a better businesswoman and parent.

Which other female leaders do you admire and why?
Sara Blakely – Spanx. She took an idea that no one believed in and now runs a business that is known internationally and more importantly, helps women of all shapes and sizes look and feel amazing in their clothes! I love her products! Even with all of the rejection she faced when prototyping and trying to find someone to manufacture her products, she fought for a product she believed it and didn’t take no for an answer. She met with buyers and actually demonstrated the product on her own body to show them how great the product was. I think she is amazing for so many different reasons. She is living the American dream because of her great idea, ingenuity, perseverance and her ‘never give up’ attitude.

What do you want spbang to accomplish in the next year?
I volunteered for lunch duty at my daughters’ school this year and was shocked at the amount of waste thrown out at lunch hour. Plastic bags everywhere, right into the garbage cans. Seeing the amount of waste each time I volunteered and knowing that a focus of our company’s product is reducing it, I have some tangible goals that I would like to see in the next twelve months. These goals include working with local schools (including my daughters’) to eliminate the lunch hour waste, continue to grow my retailers globally and create new eco-friendly products that help families save money and save the environment. Ultimately, meeting these goals and growing the company, this will enable spbang to continue to have the ability to make a difference to the environment and reduce the waste. Our bags allow customers to use them again and again and never have to throw out a plastic baggie that will go right to a dump and stay there forever.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Could Feature New Antenna Technology [Rumor]

samsung logo 4As we had reported last year, Samsung’s Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A5 faced weak signals which were allegedly due to their metal bodies, and with the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6 rumored to feature a metal body, could we be looking at similar issues as well? Thankfully that might not be the case, according to reports out of Korea which have suggested that Samsung could turn to the use of new antenna technology that will supposedly be able to address the issue.

Basically the antenna in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6 is said to have been built and designed in such a way that will allow signal to pass through the phone without its metal chassis affecting it. The new antenna type is said to be a flexible PCB versus previous iterations which relied on the Laser Direct Structuring type, thus allowing the antenna to snake its way through the phone to areas where it will be able to maximize its signal strength.

It sounds good in theory and hopefully when the Samsung Galaxy S6 is launched, which is scheduled for the 1st of March, there will not be any issues lest Samsung is faced with an “antenna gate” of their own which is what Apple had initially experienced when they first launch the iPhone 4. In any case for more information regarding the Samsung Galaxy S6, do check back with us during the phone’s launch on the 1st of March for the details.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Design Teased By T-Mobile

galaxy_s6_tmobileThere have been many rumors surrounding the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6, which some believe will feature a metal body. There are also rumors hinting that we could be looking at a curved display similar to that of the Galaxy Note Edge, and it seems that thanks to a recent T-Mobile teaser, those curved display rumors could be true.

As you can see in the image above which was posted on T-Mobile’s website, it shows off a Samsung phone with what appears to be a curved display on its edge. However unlike the Galaxy Note Edge, the Galaxy S6 is said to have curved displays on both sides. We’re not sure if we could be looking at the Galaxy S Edge or the Galaxy S6, or maybe they’re both the same phone.

Either way we should be finding out the details on the 1st of March which is when Samsung will be launching the handset at its press event at MWC 2015. We can only assume that the image posted by T-Mobile is close to the real thing because after all, they are a carrier and we can only imagine that Samsung would have shared some of their plans ahead of the phone’s launch.

Based on what we can see, we are certainly digging its design and we can’t wait to see if the actual handset will look just as good as its renders, so be sure to check back with us on the 1st of March for all the official details! In the meantime who else is excited?
