Samsung SUHD 4K TV Prices Appear Online

samsung-suhd

At the International Consumer Electronics Show 2015 in Las Vegas this January Samsung showed off its latest flagship TV series, the SUHD 4K TVs, and even though the company didn’t confirming pricing at the event one look at the TVs was enough to make you realize that they wouldn’t exactly be cheap. Now purported Samsung SUHD 4K TV prices have leaked online, and that too from a source that has a good track record, meaning that it is highly likely these prices are close to the real deal.

If you must know, the prices have been leaked by hdguru.com, which has a solid track record with these things. It leans on information provided by industry sources that claim Samsung’s new TV sets will start at $2,500.

If this information is believed the cheapest model will be the 48-inch UN48JS8500 at $2,499. UN55JS8500 and UN65JS8500, 55-inch and 65-inch, priced at $2,999 and $3,999 respectively. These are flat TVs.

The curved models, UN48JS9000, UN55JS9000, UN65JS9000, UN65JS9500 with 48-inch, 55-inch, 65-inch and 65-inch screens, are priced at $3,499, $3,999, $4,999 and $5,999 respectively.

Finally there’s the mammoth 88-inch UN88JS9500 curved TV that is believed to cost a staggering $22,999. These prices are set by the manufacturer which means that retailers have little or no wiggle room to offer enticing pricing to customers.

Samsung has as yet neither confirmed or denied that this information is incorrect.

New Rock Band Game Being Developed For PS4 And Xbox One

rockband

Rock Band is a well known game series that lets players jam to recorded music. The last major release was back in 2012 so one can say that the time is ripe for a new title. According to a new report a new Rock Band game is indeed in the pipeline and it will be released for both PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One. The report comes from a respectable scribe that cites a person familiar with the plan.

According to Bloomberg, Harmonix Music Systems is developing the new game for the latest generation of consoles from Sony and Microsoft. The person who provided this information has not been named since he or she asked to remain anonymous as this matter is private.

Speculation about a new title also picked up when Harmonix started adding new DLC to Rock Band 3 and that too after a hiatus of 21 months. Just last month new songs from Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters and Avenged Sevenfold were added to the game

Earlier this week Harmonix also added songs from Tenacious D’s Rize Of The Fenix and Back to the Shack from Weezer. A survey was recently also conducted by Harmonix which asked fans what they would like to see in a new title.

Project Cars Career Mode Unveiled In New Trailer

Project Cars is the one upcoming game that I am really looking forward to. I’ve been keeping an eye on this title ever since Slightly Mad Studios was raising money for its development. It was later picked up by Bandai Namco for full distribution. Today a new trailer has been released online which shows off the Project Cars career mode.

Its actually called an “in-depth” trailer which is almost five minutes and contains commentary which explains the various options in the title’s career mode.

The trailer shows how players will be able to create and customize their devices, and how they will be able to progress through the title by achieve specific goals. There’s actually quite a bit to be had in this mode, including but not limited to titles, invitations, endorsements and more.

Project Cars was initially supposed to be released in November 2014. Back then the developer said it had to delay release until March 20th so that extra work could be done to bring this title up to expectations.

Yesterday we heard news of another delay from Slightly Mad Studios. Project Cars now has a new release date, April 2nd, when it will finally arrive on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and the PC. The studio says the extra wait is going to be worth it once the game launches.

Want To Borrow A Shelter Dog For A Walk? There May Soon Be An App For That

Ever wish you could swing by the local shelter and take a dog out for a walk?

There might soon be an easy way to book that. A San Francisco-area couple is developing an app to help match up shelter dogs with canine lovers who want to take them out for a stroll.

Walkzee was inspired by a program that Charlie Saunders and his wife Cristina enjoyed — a lot — while on a Hawaiian honeymoon. They took out a doggie named Big Z from the Kauai Humane Society, which encourages visitors to borrow shelter dogs for day trips like hiking or the beach.

Such outings are great for the dogs, who get more relaxed and well-socialized. Wearing cute little “adopt me” vests, they also get exposed to lots of new potential adopters.

The humans obviously love it, too. “It really was the best thing we did on our honeymoon,” Saunders says.

“While on the walk we talked about how amazing it was as a program,” he told The Huffington Post. “So many dog lovers don’t have a dog to spend time with, because of their job or home situation. Meanwhile, so many dogs wait for a walk in a shelter. We think this is crazy.”

The pair wanted to see if they couldn’t get more shelter dogs out walking with more dog lovers — leading, in turn, to more adoptions.

walking a dogThe couple had a great time with Big Z, and wanted to make it so other dog lovers — and other shelter dogs — could also get out walking. (photo courtesy Walkzee)

Here’s how the app would work: Shelters could list their dogs on Walkzee, then would-be walkers would search for those dogs by location. They’d request a walk using the shelter’s preferred method, which could be through the app, by reaching out to the shelter directly, or in any other way the shelter likes to field requests.

Afterward, walkers could leave Yelp-like reviews for both dogs and shelters. They’d also be able donate directly to the shelters through the app. Walkzee won’t take a cut, Saunders says; the app, which will be free, will likely rely on advertising to make money.

Users could also share their experiences on Facebook and other social media platforms, giving the dogs more exposure.

And after that, if things go very well? “You can also send an adoption request to the shelter and kick off the adoption process,” says Saunders.

The hope is that Walkzee will launch in June. Saunders and his wife are currently holding a Kickstarter campaign, which is about two-thirds of the toward its $20,000 goal. Saunders says there are other funding avenues available, should crowdfunding not come through.

There are still a few other initial steps left to complete before the first version of the app is actually ready for use, like getting actual shelters on board. Saunders says he’s already heard from a handful of organizations who are ready to sign on, and he’s confident that there will be plenty more pickings by launch time.

He has reason to be optimistic. For one thing, more and more shelters are already offering Kauai-like walking opportunities. They’re available now at shelters in Northern Virginia, Austin, Atlanta and Utah, to name a few places.

For another, there are designs on enticing more shelters into joining by offering up bonuses like dog-supply packages — with leashes, blankets, etc. — for participants.

Future app features may include some sort of background check process for walkers, Saunders says, and perhaps a version of Walkzee for people who like cats. (May we suggest “Meowzee?”)

Itching to take a shelter dog for a walk? Don’t go looking for Big Z, the inspiration for all these plans. That sweet boy’s been adopted.

Eight Trips You HAVE to Take Before You Die

There are trips we strongly recommend you take and then there are those that we basically demand. Trust us, as travel experts, we know the getaways that should make your bucket list. Here are eight trips you HAVE to take before you die — and we even ordered them chronologically with the adventure you should embark on first in the number one spot. Because, not like you can’t go surfing at 95, but it’s probably better (and more enjoyable) if you just relax on the sand at that point.

1. Surf-Centric Vacation in Hawaii

2015-02-19-surfing.jpg

In recent years, Costa Rica has successfully pitted itself against Hawaii as a destination with an awesome surf culture — but we’re still handing the victory to Hawaii. After all, we’ve got to have some America pride! And with eight main islands, it’s bound to have a great spot for you to surf, whether you’re a beginner looking for baby waves or you seek some gnarly barrels.

Our Hotel Pick: Kalani Hawaii, Oahu

2015-02-19-surfing2.jpg

The 10-room Kalani Hawaii Private Lodging is a hostel with a bed-and-breakfast vibe, thanks to owners Maria and Bernie, the latter of whom is a former Triple Crown of Surfing contest director. The grounds are small but pretty and the beaches of North Shore, known for excellent surfing, are just across the street.

2. Diving Adventure at the Bioluminescent Bay in Puerto Rico

2015-02-19-diving.jpg

Just a short drive from Puerto Rico’s Old San Juan, this famed “Bio Bay” puts on nature’s most magnificent light show: At night, when the bay is inky black beneath the light of the moon, microscopic plankton glow turquoise. While swimming and kayaking through the neon waters is certainly cool, we’d argue that scuba-diving may be the most awe-inspiring way to experience it. However, diving at night is a totally different ballgame than when the sun’s out, so if you’ve never done it before, perhaps try a day dive first.

Our Hotel Pick: Hotel El Convento, Old San Juan

2015-02-19-diving2.jpg

There is nothing quite like the European-style El Convento in the medieval city of Old San Juan. It was a convent for 252 years, and today it’s the neighborhood’s principal upscale hotel, offering 58 elegant rooms and suites filled with Spanish antique treasures and modern amenities.

3. African Safari in Botswana

2015-02-19-safari.jpg

Northern Botswana’s diverse and exotic wildlife has made it a tourist destination for the affluent and adventurous, and it embodies the fantasy of Africa: a land with open savannas, sandy deserts, and shimmering orange sunsets, where elephants, lions, leopards hippos, buffalo, hyenas, zebra, cheetahs, crocodiles, and giraffes are still wild.

Our Hotel Pick: andBeyond Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp

2015-02-19-safari2.jpg

This luxurious safari lodge in Botswana delivers everything you’d expect from the excellent &Beyond chain: amazing tents with plush beds, phenomenal service, tasty food, and safari excursions with first-rate guides.

4. Camping Excursion in Yosemite National Park

2015-02-19-camping.jpg

Perhaps the best-known national park in the U.S., Yosemite National Park is not only an attraction unto itself, but it is also home to numerous natural wonders — that are attractions themselves as well. Picturesque granite cliffs and mountains (Half Dome and El Capitan being two of the most popular), winding streams, beautiful waterfalls, and Giant Sequoias create a gorgeous backdrop to a rugged camping experience.

Our Hotel Pick: Wawona Hotel

2015-02-19-camping2.jpg

Yosemite’s Wawona Hotel is not only one of the oldest mountain resorts in California, but is also a National Historic Landmark. Located between the Mariposa Groves and tourist hot spot Yosemite Valley, the hotel occupies its own patch of secluded property of streams and forest.

5. Romantic Getaway to Paris

2015-02-19-romance.jpg

Paris is the “city of light,” the art and fashion capital of the world — and undoubtedly the most romantic city in the world. As France’s capital, Paris boasts a plethora of museums, monuments, and astounding examples of architecture, ranging from the iconic Eiffel Tower, built in 1889, to the Gothic-style Notre Dame Cathedral, dating back to the Middle Ages. Romance-focused visitors often stroll along the Seine to take in the many sites, or walk down the Champs-Elysee, lined by high-end shops and crowned by the Arc de Triomphe.

Our Hotel Pick: La Maison Favart

2015-02-19-romance2.jpg

This upscale boutique hotel is one of the best choices in Paris, and offers surprisingly competitive rates for the level of luxury. It is named for the founder of the Opera Comique across the street, and the decor blends influences of the 18th-century theater with modern trends. Several metro lines are nearby, and popular sights such as the Louvre are within walking distance.

6. Cultural Escape to Venice

2015-02-19-culture.jpg

With a total of 51, Italy has more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other country in the world — and Venice is home to many of them. In fact, “Venice and its lagoon” as a whole make the list. Visitors come for Venice’s rich history, fabulous museums (such as the Peggy Guggenheim), and delicious food. And it wouldn’t be a trip without a gondola ride or a stroll around one of the city’s ancient squares.

Our Hotel Pick: Luna Hotel Baglioni

2015-02-19-culture2.jpg

The Luna Hotel Baglioni is a luxury chain hotel with 104 rooms located less than a two-minute walk from the shops, restaurants, and architecture of Saint Mark’s Square. Canova, an award-winning restaurant serving Italian and international cuisine, is on-site along with a café and full bar. Prices are a lower at the Bauer Hotel, but it’s farther from Saint Mark’s and less luxurious.

7. Foodie Adventure in New Orleans

2015-02-19-foodie.jpg

NOLA has been known for its delectable grub for years, but in the past decade or so it has found a spot on the country’s fine-dining scene as well. Whether you want a classic shrimp po’ boy, a creole stew with a gourmet twist, or a beignet heavily dusted in powdered sugar, you’ll be able to find it in this fantastic foodie city.

Our Hotel Pick: The Roosevelt New Orleans

2015-02-19-foodie2.jpg

With a grand lobby, classic rooms, a rooftop pool, a historic restaurant, and wonderful service, The Roosevelt attracts a varied crowd of celebrities, well-heeled couples, and business travelers. The upscale spa, the large fitness center, and the hotel’s central location are all great features, but guests should note that there are fees for Wi-Fi and for valet parking.

8. Beach Retreat in the Maldives

2015-02-19-beach.jpg

Made up of 26 atolls scattered in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is a beach destination that’s totally set apart from other tropical getaways like the Caribbean and Mexico — making it a great way to treat yourself after making your way around the globe on your various adventures. These remote, tranquil islands are known for their over-the-water huts and terrific snorkeling and diving locales. But if you’re feeling lively and looking to revisit your initial trip, surfing has recently become popular here as well.

Our Hotel Pick: Olhuveli Beach & Spa Resort

2015-02-19-beach2.jpg

With plenty of on-site activities, beautiful beaches, and above-average food, Olhuveli Beach & Spa Resort is a solid value for the Maldives and is surrounded by white-sand beaches and a shallow turquoise lagoon. Some sections of beach are more breathtaking than others, but guests should have no trouble claiming a picture-perfect spot. Cushioned loungers and palapa umbrellas are up for grabs, and a beach bar is available for drinks on the southern end of the island. The resort’s 164 rooms range from basic beachside units to upscale water villas, and connecting rooms are available for families. Those interested in flying in a seaplane should also consider Kuredu Island Resort, which has even more amenities and free in-room Wi-Fi.

Philadelphia 76ers Almost Accidentally Trade For NBA-Caliber Player

The Philadelphia 76ers are in the middle of an unprecedented multi-year teardown of their team in the name of future draft picks, high or low.

Got an annoying, expensive player on your team that you want to unload? Send him along with the right draft pick and the 76ers will take on your problem! Need a promising young point guard or an athletic freak of a forward? They can be yours! Just send toss over some of those sweet, sweet draft picks.

It’s a strategy that the team and its general manager, Sam Hinkie, have stuck to without fail ever since he took the reigns of the team. Seriously, a guy knit a hat with a tank and a 76ers logo on it; these guys are not messing around.

And that’s what made it so, so weird when, amid the madness that was this year’s NBA trade deadline, Mark Stein of ESPN sent out this tweet:

What?! How could the 76ers have possibly decided it was a good idea to trade for actual, legitimate, real-life, ready-to-go, NBA-caliber player Isaiah Thomas? The guy averaged 20 points per game last year! Why are they not sticking to the plan? Has Hinkie lost his goddamned mind? THIS IS NOT PART OF THE PLAN.

Of course, the team then settled down, remembered they were the 76ers, thought better of it and let Thomas go in favor of, you know, draft picks and “flexibility”:

In all, it was a great day in 76ers tanking history. The team traded away two of its most promising young players, reigning Rookie of the Year Michael Carter-Williams and the athletic freak otherwise known as K.J. McDaniels, and in return received JaVale McGee, Isaiah Canaan and draft picks. A separate Sixerian deal that was never finalized would have sent the Sixers Chase Budinger (who would have been bought out, not played, LOL) as well as, you guessed it, some more draft picks.

But for a moment, let us not talk of such details. It is time to mourn the brief moment on Feb. 19, 2015, when the 76ers almost accidentally obtained an NBA-caliber player.

Introducing the Brooklyn Moron

Years ago I found myself confused (and a bit relieved) to find burgers and hot dogs among the concessions on offer at a rock show sponsored by a blog called Brooklyn Vegan. If you’re one of the cool kids you may have just snickered, for you know, as I now do, that Brooklyn Vegan is a blog dedicated to the New York-based music scene, a blog with no professed beef (pun sort of intended) with the meat eating element of the concert going public.

Without ascribing any ill will to the people of Brooklyn Vegan, I will say that this episode got me thinking about the indie rock scene, the borders it draws between those in the know and everyone else, and the way naming can be a tool in defining those borders. I think about the bands I listened to as an eleven year old, before I was seduced by the siren song of “alternative music”. Take Def Leppard, for example, whose phonetic approach to naming their band was an act of both subversion and inclusion, a middle finger to the tyranny of proper spelling and a way of ensuring that anyone with a first grade education could pronounce their name with confidence. Compare that with contemporary Scottish electro-darlings CHVRCHES whose name reads like a Latin riddle only to be spoken in anything above a self-conscious murmur by members of the inner sanctum.

When you’re a 35 year old music fan living in New York City, it’s hard not to feel like an outsider looking in through an ever narrowing window. In a last ditch effort to stave off the inevitable midlife crisis, I invoke the well-worn adage “If you can’t beat ’em, and you can’t join ’em, then exploit ’em any which way towards your career as a humorist. In this column and perhaps future ones, I return to the source of that first traumatic blow to my indie credibility, Brooklyn Vegan, in search of bands I have never heard of and know nothing about. I will make guesses about who they are and what they sound like armed only with the knowledge of their names and my own stockpile of dated and misguided associations.

I don’t know what I hope to prove with this experiment. The only thing I’m almost certain of is that my guesses will be way off the mark. Long gone are my days of being in the know. These days I’m the perfect Brooklyn Moron.

2015-02-05-BrooklynMoronLogo.jpg

BAND NAME 1: BRO SAFARI

Let’s forget all the cynicism above and start with a clean slate. There is something so gleeful about this name that I have to take it at face value. These guys are bros and they approach life as if it’s wild a safari. They want to party with everybody and their unapologetic open-mindedness endears them to even the most elitist among music scene snobs.

I have to imagine that Bro Safari kills it live. However their stellar musicianship can almost go unnoticed as their onstage antics, their hilarious and inspired gags make the show what it is. They don’t have a label. They don’t care. They will soon. Or not. It’s all good.

When Bro Safari pose for a promo picture, I imagine they look something like this:

2015-02-19-BroSafari.jpg

BAND NAME 2: SEX PRISONER

My shrink would do better to explain this than I could, but when I hear “sex” I think electronica. Add the word “prisoner” and the mood is getting darker, the digitized crunches louder and more violent.

Sex Prisoner is a collaboration between a talented young woman who came to New York from a stiflingly repressed Middle American town on a Tisch scholarship, and a listless engineering student who responded to an interesting posting on an NYU message board.

I’ll call them Eva and Serge because, why not?

Eva is a performance artist and gifted vocalist and for her, the show is as much about spectacle as it is about music. Serge channels his thesis work on radio frequencies into epic soundscapes over which Eva can emote and howl. Together they are Sex Prisoner.

Serge has never had sex.

If I typed #sexprisoner into Instagram, I’d expect to find this:

2015-02-05-SEXPRISONER.jpg

BAND NAME 3: MR. LEGS

In my day, band names starting with honorifics like “mister” or “doctor” suggested we were cruising over ska or jam-band country. Neither of these genres are so much of the moment but let’s just say that I imagine Mr. Legs is a group of guys that grew up together in Upstate New York and that their name derives from a private joke based on a lanky individual who used to hang out at their local swimming hole.

Mr. Legs got serious when they were all attending a SUNY college where they dropped acid regularly. Since graduating and hitting the city clubs they’ve given that up, all of them but the guitarist who claims to “see the serpent through the grid” when he plays.

A band like Mr. Legs gives its best performance when playing against a mountainous backdrop like this one:

2015-02-16-MRLEGS.jpg

That’s all for this installment from the Brooklyn Moron. Excuse me now while I prepare some preemptive apology letters.
