Everything You Need To Know About #TheDress

Unless you were in a bunker on Thursday, you’ve heard the only story more viral than the llamas on the lam.

A photo of a dress — now trending on every social media site as #TheDress — left the world divided. Is it white and gold? Blue and black? Or, dare we say it, blue and brown?

the dress

We know the answer. Here’s what all the fuss is about:

An image of the dress was originally posted by a 21-year-old singer named Caitlin McNeill.

McNeill shared it with talent manager Sarah Weichel, who begged the question, “Is this dress white and gold, or blue and black? Me and my friends can’t agree and we are freaking the fuck out.”

It’s freaking blue and black.

the dress blue and black

Though you may not see it that way. Wired wrote a great piece outlining how our eyes deceive us, and the science behind The Dress.

Wired reports:

“What’s happening here is your visual system is looking at this thing, and you’re trying to discount the chromatic bias of the daylight axis,” says Bevil Conway, a neuroscientist who studies color and vision at Wellesley College. “So people either discount the blue side, in which case they end up seeing white and gold, or discount the gold side, in which case they end up with blue and black.” (Conway sees blue and orange, somehow.)

You can buy it.

The dress is by Roman Originals, and the company knows its garment is famous. Oh yeah, and the site describes it as “Royal Blue.”

Some still probably think it’s white and gold. That’s OK.

#TeamWhiteGold is still going strong on Twitter and Facebook. #TeamBlueandBlack is winning, though.

Yes, there are memes.

Because of course there are memes.

The Dress’ poster has spoken.

McNeill told Business Insider that the whole experience has been odd, but she enjoyed the attention the dress received from celebrities:

“I thought my followers on Tumblr would maybe have a good reaction, but I never would have considered that Taylor Swift and Mindy Kaling would be tweeting about it,” McNeill said.

McNeill also says that the dress is blue and black. Debate over!

Apple Achieves Record Smartphone Profits

apple logoWe all know that Apple is one highly successful company, having had their fair share of hits in the past that saw a slew of devices grow from strength to strength. The fully touchscreen iPhone, when it was first released in 2007, certainly met with a whole lot of skepticism by the industry, but boy, how has it survived since then to become the juggernaut that it is today with the iPhone 6 being the latest model. Having said that, a latest report from market research firm Strategy Analytics claimed that the Apple iOS has picked up a record-high 88.7% global smartphone profit share in Q4, 2014, which is a whole lot more than the 70.5% figure they had in Q4 2013.

It was not all that rosy of an outlook for Android, however, as Android saw a record low 11.3% profit share, which is sharply down from 29.5% in the corresponding quarter in 2013. Where dollars are concerned, Apple’s Q4, 2014 smartphone operating profits stood at $18.8 billion, which is an increase from $11.4 billion in Q4, 2013, whereas Android manufacturers had operating profits of a mere $2.4 billion, which is reduced from $4.8 billion in the same quarter as the previous year. On the whole, global smartphone operating profit saw an increase of 31% in Q4 2014 as opposed to the previous Q4 2013.

Windows 10 Set To Offer USB 3.1 Type-C

windows-10-surfaceIt looks as though Microsoft has resurrected their WinHec conference, and with the agenda having already gone live, the event would open up new insights into Windows 10, which would be Microsoft’s upcoming unified operating system version. Apparently, in one of the sessions that are being held at WinHec would be known as ‘Enabling New USB Connectivity Scenarios in Windows 10′.

If one were to check it out further, it would point to a crystal clear fact that Windows 10 will undoubtedly support USB 3.1 Type-C as well as USB Dual Role – which is a good thing, of course. The session’s description goes something like this :-

Windows 10 introduces support for USB Dual Role and Type-C, which will enable new wired connectivity scenarios such a phone interacting with USB peripherals, or laptops connecting to an external display using the USB Type-C connector. This session will go into detail on how Windows supports these technologies and what you need to do to enable them.

Such support should not be met with a skeptical or raised eyebrow, since Microsoft has normally done a good job when it comes to supporting the most recent USB standard soon after it has been announced. Are you looking forward to toying around on your tablet, smartphone, notebook and desktop on a single operating system?

Microsoft To Shed More Jobs In China

microsoft-logoIs there yet another economic crisis looming on the horizon? Perhaps, especially when we hear of Microsoft being tipped to shut down not one, but actually a couple of plants over in China – which would end up with 9,000 job cuts along the way. Ever since Microsoft picked up Nokia some time back, the software giant has taken steps to cut jobs all over the place. Not only that, it does look as though Microsoft might be doing the same thing yet again, except that this time around, it will involve a couple of manufacturing plants over in China.

While there has been no official announcement made by Microsoft just yet concerning the job cuts, MarketWatch claims that up to 9,000 people will be affected. These cuts are the direct result of the closure of a couple of manufacturing plants that are located in Beijing and Dongguan, China. An unnamed Microsoft China executive did mention that the closures will occur by the end of March, where all manufacturing will subsequently be moved over to Vietnam.

The slow but sure reduction of the workforce is always a difficult subject to approach, but it is a necessary evil, if you will, especially when you take into consideration how Microsoft picked up close to 25,000 employees from the Nokia deal.

Sony To Go Slimmer, Lighter, Brighter At MWC 2015

sony-mwc-teaseMobile World Congress 2015 is all set to kick off in Barcelona, Spain, later at the end of this weekend. Having said that, you can be sure that there will be plenty of new smartphones and other kinds of mobile devices that are in the pipeline, waiting to be revealed in Spain over the course of next week. Sony too, does not want to miss out on the festivities, which is why they have stepped forward to tease the masses by stating that they are on track to reveal something “slimmer, lighter, brighter” at the upcoming Mobile World Congress.

In fact, Sony did put up a teaser image on Twitter that you can check out above, where you see the right hand of a man holding a white device which could very well be a tablet, or a phablet, although we would most probably place our money on the latter. In fact, it does seem to resemble the Sony Xperia Z4 tablet that was leaked out not too long ago.

Assuming the device above that was leaked is actually the Xperia Z4 tablet, then you can be sure that its design would have some sort of resemble to that of the Xperia Z3 – after all, it should run in the family, right? The rounded metal edges would certainly be more than welcome in terms of design, and it is also said to arrive with a 2K display to wow your eyes.
