In just a couple of days Samsung is going to take the stage in Barcelona before Mobile World Congress 2015 kicks off to unveil its two new smartphones, the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge. Multiple renders of both devices have been leaked many times over the past few weeks but today we might be getting our best look yet at Samsung’s new devices. Pictures of both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge placed side by side have appeared online.

Screenshot images of both devices were leaked online by an XDA member who goes by the user name graaler. Just yesterday multiple photos of the Galaxy S6 were also leaked on XDA forums.

Both the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge appear to be similarly sized in this pictures which suggests that there’s really no major difference in display size between these two devices.

We can see the curved screen on Galaxy S6 Edge, which would be similar to that on the Galaxy Note Edge, and a slightly taller home button is present on both home devices which was linked to a rumor recently that Samsung is going to opt for a touch based fingerprint sensor instead of the swipe based one it introduced with Galaxy S5.

It can not be confirmed if the software seen in these pictures is the final build of TouchWiz that will ship with these devices or a pre-release build, nevertheless, if recent reports are true Samsung is going to offer a truly bloatware free software with its new devices.

Google Will Reportedly Unveil Android Pay At I/O 2015

Google_Sign

We have recently been hearing rumors that Google is looking to revamp its payments service. For that purpose the company recently confirmed the acquisition of Softcard, a deal which will also see Google Wallet being pre-loaded on devices by major U.S. carriers, while it is also said to be working on a totally new project that will help expand its presence in brick and mortar locations across the country.

According to a report by Ars Technica Google is going to unveil a new payment platform called Android Pay at the I/O 2015 conference this summer. The new platform is said to be geared towards mobile devices and will allow third party apps to enable virtual and real world transactions through one interface.

For a seamless experience the platform will allow transactions to be completed in third party apps, however Android Pay will support tap-and-pay transactions using Host Card Emulation and NFC, like Wallet currently does. This will go a long way in simplifying transactions as users won’t have to switch between apps to complete payments.

This doesn’t mean that Google Wallet will bite the dust. When there’s no support in a third party app Google Wallet will step in to fill the gap.

So far Google has neither confirmed nor denied this report.

Samsung To Mass Produce 128-Gigabyte Universal Flash Memory

UFS-press-release_20150225Samsung has announced today that it is now mass producing the industry’s first ever 128-gigabyte (GB) ultra-fast embedded memory based on the much-anticipated Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 2.0 standard for next-generation flagship smartphones. The new embedded memory’s UFS 2.0 interface is said to be the most advanced JEDEC-compliant, next-generation flash memory storage specification currently in the market.

Through ‘Command Queue’; the technology that UFS memory uses to accelerates the speed of command execution in SSDs through a serial interface has significantly increased data processing speeds compared to the 8-bit parallel-interface-based eMMC standard. Results, Samsung UFS memory conducts random reading at 2.7 times faster (19,000 input/output operations per second (IOPS)) than the most common embedded memory for high-end smartphones available today, the eMMC 5.0.

In addition to a 50 percent decrease in energy consumption, it also delivers a sequential read and write performance boost up to SSD levels with its random read speed 12 times faster than that of a standard high-speed memory card (which runs at 1,500 IOPS), and is expected to greatly improve system performance. As for random writing it is clocked at 14,000 IOPS which is 28 faster than conventional external memory card,

Samsung anticipates that UFS will support all future high-end mobile market needs, while eMMC solution are kept for the mid-market, value products.

The three version of the Samsung’s new UFS embedded memory are: 128GB, 64GB and 32GB versions. Currently, eMMC line-up produce only half of it.

In an attempt to provide more design flexibility to global customers, Samsung’s UFS embedded memory package, a new ePoP (embedded package on package) solution, can be stacked directly on top of a logic chip, taking approximately 50 percent less space.

Samsung has already planned ahead for the next several years, continuing its pace on the memory solution endeavor, combining truly high-performance with high capacity.

blackberry-leap-2

It hasn’t been long since BlackBerry launched its two high-end devices, the Passport and the Classic, it is now due to bring to market a low-end or mid-range device that will take the baton from the BlackBerry Z3. The Z3 was announced at Mobile World Congress 2014 and with this year’s event just a few days away there’s speculation that a Z3 successor might be unveiled in Barcelona. It might be the device we see in these leaked pictures, BlackBerry Leap, a.k.a the BlackBerry Rio.

BlackBerry Leap might be the moniker this device takes to market. From what we have heard about it up till now this isn’t a high-end device by any means.

The design itself is quite similar to that of the BlackBerry Z3, which was very well received in emerging markets, particularly because of the fact that it was priced under $200.

BlackBerry Leap is expected to retain that price point. Rumored specifications include a dualcore 1.5GHz MSM8960 processor with 2GB RAM, 5-inch 1280×720 pixel resolution display, 8 megapixel rear and 2 megapixel front camera, 16GB onboard storage with microSD card support, Penta Band LTE + 4G hotspot support all in a package that comes in at just 9.5mm thick.

A confirmed release date is not known at this point, an announcement is surely expected at MWC 2015, and if it is unveiled at the event one can expect it to arrive in emerging markets initially starting April or May 2015.

Motorola has an online tool called Moto Maker which you can use to customize a smartphone that you purchase from the company. So far the tool has only been limited to smartphones but next month this is going to change. Motorola is going to open up Moto Maker to its Moto 360 smartwatch, allowing you to add your own personal touches to the wearable device, before it gets shipped to your doorstep.

Moto Maker will provide three options for the watch case: silver, black and champagne gold. The band will be offered in two sizes, in either leather or metal, and finally you’ll be able to pick one of the 11 watch faces which will come preinstalled on your Moto 360.

When Moto Maker is opened up to the Moto 360 next month the company will also introduce some new watch faces as well as the single-link metal band that it teased about a year back.

This was clearly the next step for Motorola’s online customization suite, many had wondered previously if and when it would be opened up to the company’s smartwatch, which many believe was the best looking wearable device introduced in 2014.

So far Motorola has not detailed its plans for a second generation Moto 360. Hopefully Moto Maker support for the existing one will keep customers busy till the time its ready to show off the new wearable device.
