A Weird and Wonderful Cabaret Chronicle: Karen Mason Revisits Her Roots at 'Don't Tell Mama!'

How’s it feel to celebrate the 33rd Anniversary of midtown Manhattan’s longest running cabaret room with a 10-performance packed-to-the-gills homecoming gig by Broadway star Karen Mason, who, in 1982, when she was an up and coming wannabe, opened the showroom at Don’t Tell Mama before moving onward and upward to Mamma Mia and Sunset Boulevard, singing with symphonic orchestras, filling Performing Arts Centers with (gasp!) paying patrons, etc. etc. all over the globe? Having Karen Mason sing her warm and welcoming heart out every Sunday and Monday night at 7 p.m. during the merry month of March 2015 was serendipitous, and way beyond Sidney Myer’s wildest dreams! Sidney Myer, the Yiddish mama who books the entertainment at Don’t Tell Mama hasn’t stopped kvelling about Karen’s shows honoring the club’s longevity. Who ever dreamed his Don’t Tell Mama would survive more years on earth than those allotted to Jesus, Mozart, Belushi or the evil Evas, Braun and Peron, who all, per Wikipedia, departed this vale of tears at age 33.

Rather than wither the fabulous Ms. Mason, age has embellished her infinite variety. She still looks, sings and charms with enough brio for a gaggle of gals in their mid-30s. Don’t believe me? Listen to what I was told by the absolute stranger sitting cheek to cheek with me on the packed black leather banquette, and turned out to be the Tony-nominated, award-winning you-name-it-and-he’s-done-it-and-done-it-well Lee Roy Reams. He poked my brachium as Karen was belting out the “Sunset Boulevard” showstopper, “As If We Never Said Goodbye,” and declared, “This is not a performance. It’s a master class!” It certainly was.

Karen’s long dark tresses are now trim, sleek and gloriously golden blonde, a design decision accentuated by her gold sequin chemise. Her gorgeous new look reminds me of actress Robin Wright, who’s become a superstar in midlife as the First Lady of Netflix’s House of Cards. Karen’s buttery voice enchants and interacts with everyone listening — singly or en masse. To Karen, size doesn’t matter. She gives her all, regardless of whether she’s performing in a vast symphony hall, in a Broadway theater or in this packed, 85-seat intimate club. Sidney Myer describes her as a musical Frank Buck, who brings ’em in alive over and over, with many attendees, also show biz boldface names, reserving seats for Karen’s following week’s performance for themselves and friends even as they’re departing from Karen’s current show. Even more amazing is that habitués of the Don’t Tell Mama dining room and piano bar have been so intrigued by Karen’s exit poll buzz, that they’ve been attending Karen’s shows, which Sidney says is “unheard of!”

Karen’s song list is a best of breed compilation, which ranges from Broadway musical giants like Arlen, Bernstein, Gershwin, Lerner, Sondheim, Strouse and Styne, to genuine British Royalty with two knights — Sir Andrew Webber and Sir Paul McCarthy, and a self-made Duke, first name, Vernon. She also pays respects to our own New York contemporary songwriters by singing songs by the late Brian Lasser — who was her own musical director for many years — the very present Barry Kleinbort and most present of all, her husband Paul Rolnick, whose work continues to turn Karen on enough that she allows him to share her life, her love and her time.

Paul Rolnick wrote the lyrics to a Shelly Markham tune, which I consider the most unforgettable song I’ve hard in the last five years. It’s called “It’s About Time,” and was written to be sung at a recent marriage of a gay couple by Karen, and it’s led into a new career for her as a wedding singer. It’s the “Oh, Promise Me” of sexual marital equality and 500 times better. I can’t get the melody out of my head and Paul Rolnick’s refrain always melts my heart;

It’s about a love that is meant to last forever
It’s about a life that leaves nothing left behind
It’s about all the time that we have left together
It’s about love. It’s about life. It’s about time.

And it applies to everyone who loves enough to take the plunge into commitment.

Her encore of Over The Rainbowwas the first time I’ve ever heard this song without thinking of Judy Garland.

To paraphrase the immortal Cy Coleman — Carolyn Leigh ballad, Karen Mason has had many wonderful years, but I think her best years are yet to come.

March 29th and 30th are the last two dates to see Karen’s show at Don’t Tell Mama, but rumors have reached me that an extension is in the works. Karen Mason is a great artist and a delightful human being performing a show you shouldn’t miss. It’s about love. It’s about life. It’s about time.

'Good Wife' Recap: All of Alicia's Men in "Red Meat"

Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 6, Episode 16 of CBS’s The Good Wife, titled “Red Meat.”
2015-03-29-1427660912-1975736-rs_560x41515031914105310243goodwife.ls.31915.jpgWe have a winner! Alicia wins the race for state’s attorney but is losing everywhere else.

She tries to reach out to Prady, but he won’t work with her.

Finn, despite being adorable and buying her a video game, has a new girlfriend.

Her campaign manager is leaving, having done a job well-done. And Peter? Despite a last ditch effort to make up for his previous speech sin, he is very, very low in my book. He’s so calculating and can barely stand Alicia’s success. He’s gross.

Hopefully, we can have Eli’s daughter stick around as her assistant. Or anything.

In other news, Diane goes hunting and fights about abortion. Kalinda is being followed, or say Bishop tells her. So we have a few episodes of confusing Kalinda plotlines before she we have to say goodbye to her forever. And Bishop is leaving ‘the game,’ as it were.

Also, it’s been one year since everyone’s least favorite moment of the show:

I’ll be on the lookout for any tributes. Tweet me your reactions @karenfratti.

The Good Wife airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.

Tip: If you are only looking for making fonts bigger or smaller to see them better (can be quite handy for reading small wordings), then you can also use your mouse to zoom in or zoom out. All you have to do is press “Ctrl” key and move Mouse wheel to zoom in or wheel down to zoom out (of course, if you have a mouse with a Wheel). If you don’t have a mouse with a wheel, then you can also press “Ctrl” key and use “+” (Plus) and “–“ (minus) keys to zoom in or out. pebble-steel

Last month Pebble launched a crowdfunding campaign to bring its new smartwatch, the Pebble Time, to market. The campaign has finally ended. Just a couple of weeks into it this actually became the biggest crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter ever. The finally number stands north of $20 million. This is one crowdfunding record that’s going to stay put for quite some time.

More than 78,000 backers contributed funds to this campaign on Kickstarter, raising a total of $20.3 million for the smartwatch. The previous crown for most funded campaign belong to the first generation Pebble smartwatch, that project raised $13.4 million.

For Pebble Time the company was actually seeking $500,000. This figure was achieved in merely a few minutes. The campaign actually broke a $1 million in under 49 minutes.

Since the campaign was raising so much money Pebble announced that it would contribute money from a $1 million pool for smartstrap projects that will work with the accessory port.

Now the company will start producing units which will then be shipped out to backers that purchased them at various point points. Later on Pebble Time will also be sold through conventional retail channels. The new smartwatch, and its steel variant, are expected to sell for $200 and $300 respectively at retail later this year.

Apple And NBCUniversal Haven’t Talked About A TV Streaming Service

apple-williamsburg

There have been many reports over the past few weeks that Apple is developing an internet TV streaming service of its own. The service is expected to be unveiled at Worldwide Developers Conference 2015 this June before it goes live in the fall. There have been rumors that Apple and Comcast have had a falling out and as a result Comcast is withholding NBCUniversal content from the service. Comcast’s attorney has set the record straight in a letter he wrote to the FCC.

The letter is part of Comcast’s efforts to get its merger with Time Warner Cable approved. It was sent in response to a filing from Stop Mega Comcast, a coalition that is actively working to thwart this merger.

It was claimed in the filing that “Comcast may be withholding affiliated NBCUniversal (“NBCU”) content in an effort to thwart the entry of potential new video competitors.” The filing referenced a recent article by The Wall Street Journal which claimed that Apple wasn’t talking to Comcast anymore about this service due to a falling out.

Francis Buono, attorney for Comcast, wrote to the FCC that NBCUniversal has not withheld programming from Apple’s internet TV streaming service. He mentioned that “Apple has not even approached NBCUniversal with such a request.”

Apple’s internet TV streaming service will reportedly offer around 25 channels for up to $35 per month. Major networks like CBS, Fox and ABC are expected to be onboard. Surely one would expect that NBCUniversal wouldn’t want to miss out, but if Buono is believed, Apple and NBCUniversal have yet to even sit across each other at the table.

PS4 Bundle Includes Free PlayStation Camera

ps4

One of the reasons why the PlayStation 4 cost $100 less than the Xbox One when both console came out in 2013 was because Sony decided to offer the PlayStation Camera separately while Microsoft bundled Kinect with its new console and demanded $499 for it. Microsoft later had to unbundle Kinect from Xbox One just so it could match the PlayStation 4’s price point, and this did improve its sales, even though PS4 remains in the lead even today. Those who are still on the fence about purchasing Sony’s new console can take advantage of a new PS4 bundle which includes a PlayStation Camera.

Best Buy’s new PS4 bundle includes the console, a copy of The Last of Us Remastered as well as the PlayStation Camera. The camera itself is a $60 value.

The retailer is offering this bundle for $399. That’s actually the base price of this console. For $399 you not only get the PS4 but also one of the best selling titles for the console.

The PlayStation Camera can be used to stream video of yourself through Twitch when you’re already broadcasting gameplay. It will take a much central role when Project Morpheus, Sony’s virtual reality headset, arrives in the first half of 2016.

If you’re interested in Sony’s virtual reality experience, and the PlayStation 4, then at this price this bundle is actually a very good offer.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Survives Brutal Drop Test

Some of the best performing videos on YouTube are unboxings and reviews of mobile devices. Videos in which such devices are subjected to all forms are torture tend to do well too because people often like to see how tough a smartphone or tablet is before they actually spend money on it. Since the Galaxy S6 is due to arrive in just a couple of weeks there’s no doubt that YouTube will soon get flooded with such videos. There’s one Galaxy S6 Edge drop test video online already.

The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are quite different from Samsung’s previous flagships because both have a metal and glass build. There’s Gorilla Glass 4 in the front and back for increased protection. The obvious question here is that how well does this hold up when the device is dropped?

We know nobody intentionally throws their device on the ground, but we have all accidently dropped a smartphone at some point in our lives, so it’s not actually bad to know how much abuse a device can take.

The video that has gone up on YouTube shows a woman throwing a Galaxy S6 Edge to the ground with all her might. A quick test shows that the device holds up nicely despite the brutal throw.

This is certainly the first of many drop and durability test videos for Samsung’s new flagships. People interested in buying one will surely be happy to see how well the device holds up.
