What Do Sex And Sword Swallowing Have In Common?

Sex and sword swallowing beg some pretty obvious comparisons, but the similarities aren’t as clear-cut as you might think, at least according to professional sword swallower Brett Loudermilk.

The flowing-haired, bemustached 26-year-old sat down with HuffPost Weird News to chat about this history of sword swallowing, making a living as a sideshow performer, and exactly how you get something so long and hard down your throat.

If you’re interested in becoming a sword swallower yourself, definitely don’t follow the instructions in Brett’s totally-fake tutorial below:

Beware of Bonds

Bonds are just as risky as stocks. That’s a simple fact not recognized by many investors, who still view bonds in their historic sense of being a more secure investment because they have a priority call against a company’s assets in case of a bankruptcy. That’s true — in the long run.

But in the short-run bond prices can be just as volatile as stock prices — costing you money if you must sell at the wrong time, or if you hold them and are stuck with below-market yields.

Here’s a simple rule that applies to all bonds: When interest rates rise, bond prices fall.

That’s just the way bonds work. If you own a low-yielding bond when interest rates go up, then market participants will offer you less than the full face value of your bond if you want to sell. The amount of this price discount depends on the “maturity” of the bond — the length of time before the issuer promises to repay your $1,000 face value.

The longer the maturity, the greater the price decline when rates change. Short-term bonds, with maturities of three years or less, will be far less impacted by rising rates than bonds with longer maturities.

Here are some more things you should know about bonds:

1. Bonds have credit risk, as well as market risk. The price risk described above is called “market risk.” But there is also a risk of default — “credit risk.” Bonds carry ratings that attempt to quantify that additional risk. Risky companies must offer higher interest rates to get borrowers to buy bonds. So higher coupons are likely a reflection of repayment credit risk.

2. All bonds share these risk characteristics. You can buy government bonds, corporate bonds, municipal bonds — each with different protections and guarantees. For example, muni bond interest is tax-free, thereby boosting overall return to taxpayers in high brackets. Government bonds are usually perceived as less risky than corporate bonds — though that is not always the case. But no matter what type of bond, when rates rise, prices will fall.

3. Bond prices are opaque. While prices of individual stocks are quoted instantly, prices of individual bonds are less visible, leaving small investors open to price discrepancies. To find current prices on most bonds, before buying or selling, go to the Bond Center at Finra.org.

4. Bond funds don’t protect against market risk. There are two types of bond funds — fixed portfolios and managed funds. A fixed portfolio of bonds means you are buying a package of bonds that will remain unchanged. Having a diverse bond portfolio may mitigate credit risk, but the value of the fund will fall when interest rates rise. Bond funds with managers may try to minimize price fluctuations, by holding cash, or choosing among bonds, but when rates rise, even these managed fund prices will inevitably fall.

5. Bond yields don’t always reflect credit and market risk. Sometimes external forces can push bond yields down to very low levels — despite market risk. Here’s an example: United States 10-year Treasury bonds, widely considered the safest asset in the world, are currently yielding about 2 percent.

But at the same time, German 10-year bonds are yielding only 0.2 percent, and Japanese 10-year government bonds are yielding 0.35 percent! Even 10-year bonds of Spain and Italy are yielding only just above 1 percent. They’re not safer — but their lower yields result from the European Central Bank’s bond-buying program to stimulate the Eurozone. Central bank bond-buying pushes yields down.

As you can see, bonds are no longer safe investments for “widows and orphans.” Instead, they are impacted by domestic interest rate changes, global central bank actions, and the trading decisions of hedge funds and other sophisticated investors. You’ll want to stay out of their way. And that’s The Savage Truth.

Michelle Obama Declares 'Black Girls Rock!'

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Michelle Obama celebrated the beauty, power and tenacity of black women while spreading her own message of education for girls at Black Girls Rock!, an annual event honoring trailblazing women of color from all walks of life.

“No matter who you are, no matter where you come from, you are beautiful,” Obama told the crowd, which included many young black girls.

“I am so proud of you. My husband, your president, is so proud of you,” she added. “We have so much hope and dreams for you.”

Obama was not among the honorees at Saturday night’s festivities, held at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. That distinction went to actress Jada Pinkett Smith, singer Erykah Badu, actress Cicely Tyson, “Selma” director Ava DuVernay, educator Nadia Lopez and Dr. Helene D. Gayle, president and CEO of CARE USA, a humanitarian organization.

However, Obama was the most celebrated participant. Wearing a form-fitting white dress, she jammed to performances from the likes of Badu, Fantasia, Sheila E!, Estelle and others and applauded the honorees.

But Obama got among the night’s loudest ovations as she came on stage and declared “Black girls rock!” – the slogan and name of the organization founded by Beverly Bond, which is designed to uplift young black girls, a group that often has difficulty finding positive and reaffirming images of themselves in the world.

Obama acknowledged as much in her speech to celebrate three young honorees.

“I know there are voices that you are not good enough,” she said, acknowledging that she often lacked self-confidence growing up despite encouraging parents.

“Each of those doubts was like a test,” she said, “that I either shrink away from or rise to meet. And I decided to rise.”

Obama, who recently completed a trip to Japan and Cambodia as part of her worldwide push for better educational opportunities for girls, lauded the young honorees for excelling in their studies.

“There is nothing more important than being serious about your education,” the Ivy League-educated Obama said. “That’s why I am able to stand here tonight. … I want every one of our black girls do to the same, and our black boys.”

Obama’s speech was just one of many highlights of the nearly four-hour event, which will be shown Saturday, April 5, on BET.

Will Smith gave an emotional tribute to his wife, Jada Pinkett, who received the Star Power award. Smith alluded to persistent rumors that the couple’s marriage was in trouble.

He said when one rumor got out of control, he had a chance of reflection.

“In that brief moment my heart jumped for a second and I started to imagine what my life would have been like without that woman,” he said as the couple’s daughter, Willow, beamed from the audience.

When Pinkett Smith accepted the honor, she alluded to recent slights of black girls and women – including a college baseball player’s slur against Little League pitcher Mo’ne Davis – as reasons why Black Girls Rock! is necessary.

She also implored black women to celebrate and be aware of their own strength.

“I need you to understand that we are the women who marched from cotton fields into fields of medicine … politics … entertainment,” she said. “We have found a way to march into a White House.”

Tyson also spoke to the resiliency of black women as she accepted her legacy award from hosts actresses Tracee Ellis Ross and Regina King.

“The moment anyone tries to demean or degrade you in any way, you have to know how great you are,” Tyson said. “Nobody would bother to beat you down if you were not a threat.”

DuVernay, whose civil rights drama “Selma” received an Academy Award nomination, making her the first black woman to notch such an achievement, name-checked a host of other black filmmakers in her speech as she accepted her Shot Caller award, and implored women to “figure out what you need to do to be the heroine of your own story.”

The show peppered songs from entertainers like Jill Scott, Estelle and others with inspiring stories from the award winners. One of the members of the group Sister Sledge sang the song “We Are Family,” with the refrain “I’ve got all my sisters with me,” as the audience grooved along.

And sisterhood was the spirit of the evening, evident when Obama came on stage to close the show with all the honorees. When an embarrassed King flubbed a line, Obama gave her a hug and then jokingly rubbed her back.

The actress and director then shouted with glee, “I’ve got Mrs. Obama pumping me up!”

Woman, 2-Year-Old Killed In Washington State Shooting; Man Seriously Injured

BREMERTON, Wash. (AP) — A 29-year-old woman and a 2-year-old boy were fatally shot early Saturday, and a third shooting victim was suffering from life-threatening injuries, sheriff’s deputies in Washington state said.

Investigators used a police dog to search the Bremerton mobile home park where the shooting took place, but the dog did not pick up the suspect’s scent. “We feel confident the suspect is no longer in the mobile home park,” Kitsap County Sheriff’s Lt. Detective Earl Smith said.

The Kitsap Sun reports (http://bit.ly/1BFXjUs) that the boy’s mother was trying to shield him when he was shot, but the mother was not hurt. The woman who was killed was a roommate.

Officials say they received reports of gunshots heard at the Kariotis Mobile Home Park just after 2 a.m. Saturday. When they arrived, they found the woman dead and the 2-year-old critically injured. The toddler was taken to Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton, but he later died.

The third victim, a man whose age is unknown, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with life-threatening injuries. The man was shot in the lower abdomen and underwent surgery, Smith said.

The sheriff’s office released a statement late Saturday identifying the woman who was killed as Heather Kelso of Bremerton. She was an employee of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and had lived in the mobile home park for three years, the sheriff said.

The boy was identified as Kaden Lum, also of Bremerton. He and his mother had lived with Kelso for three weeks. The sheriff’s office did not release the boy’s mother’s name.

The mother and boy had moved into the home three weeks ago, Smith told the newspaper. The boy’s father lives outside Kitsap County, Smith said. The third victim was a neighbor who was visiting and was shot as he ran back to his residence, Smith said.

Two other homes were hit with bullets, but no one was hurt, he said.

Bremerton is on the west side of Puget Sound, across from Seattle.

COOKIE MONSTER: Thief Steals Cash Box From Girl Scouts

A thief in New Hampshire apparently had a craving for cash, not cookies.

Rochester police say they are looking for a man who stole a cash box from Girl Scouts selling cookies outside a local drug store.

Police say the theft occurred Saturday evening during a cookie sales event outside Walgreen’s on South Main Street.

WMUR-TV reports ( http://bit.ly/1EkPM3A ) that a man wearing a black winter hat and New England Patriots jacket swiped the cash box and dashed into a car with New Jersey license plates and two other people inside.

Police say it’s unclear how much money was stolen.

Anyone with information about the case should call Rochester police at 603-335-6500.

Christians Celebrate Palm Sunday Around The World As Holy Week Begins (PHOTOS)

Christians around the world are marking Palm Sunday by waving fronds, attending church services and visiting sites in the Holy Land at the start of the Holy Week that ends with Easter.

Crowds of faithful gathered in Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the traditional site of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. Many waved the fronds to symbolize how worshippers greeted Jesus over 2,000 years ago as he triumphantly returned to Jerusalem.

Later in the day, hundreds of Christian pilgrims are expected to march behind a white donkey from the Mount of Olives to the holy city, retracing Jesus’ traditional route into Jerusalem.

Worshippers also gathered in the Nativity Church in Bethlehem, the traditional site of Jesus’ birth, clutching olive branches and bouquets as they sung in praise.

At the Vatican, Pope Francis marked Palm Sunday in St. Peter’s Square. In keeping with the simple tone of his 2-year-old papacy, Francis leaned on a plain wooden pastoral staff instead of a traditionally more ornate one as he stood under a red canopy on the basilica steps.

In Nigeria, the faithful attended church a day after millions voted in a presidential election too close to call, many praying for peace after violence marred its 2011 poll.

Christians also prayed in religiously diverse Lebanon as well, some of those refugees who have fled Syria’s four-year conflict.

Air Canada Flight Slides Off Halifax Runway, Injuring 23

TORONTO, March 29 (Reuters) – An Air Canada flight crash landed in the east coast city of Halifax and went off the runway early on Sunday, local media reported, with the airline confirming 23 passengers and crew suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The airline said the incident happened shortly after midnight, and 18 of the 23 admitted to hospitals for observation and treatment of minor injuries have been released.

Air Canada said the Airbus A320 flying from Toronto was carrying 133 passengers and five crew members. The airline did not give the cause of the accident but said it was cooperating fully with investigators.

Local media reported it was snowing heavily at the airport at the time of the accident.

Photos posted online by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada showed the nose of the airline broken off and at least one engine badly damaged in the crash. (https://www.flickr.com/photos/tsbcanada/16342568434/)
