Just incase you haven’t had enough collaboration between the Star Wars and Lego franchises yet, a new special from Disney will have re-watching the entire first two trilogies, albeit in plastic brick form. Last year, Huawei tried to convince us that we needed a combination Bluetooth headset and activity tracker; for MWC 2015, it’s the turn of its glamorous sibling, the Huawei TalkBand B2. Hewn from metal and leather rather than the plastic of its B1 predecessor, and targeting wearers who might be looking to replace a traditional watch rather than fitness band, … Continue reading
With Mobile World Congress kicking off officially in a few hours’ time, you can be sure that there will be a slew of new devices that will roll out from various manufacturers, and all of them would be jostling for your attention (and eventually, your loyalty – which translates to spending an amount of money at the end of it all, of course). ARCHOS’ smartphones might not be as universally flamboyant as the iPhone 6 or the Galaxy S series from Samsung, but they do have a place in the scheme of things – and the ARCHOS 50 Oxygen Plus is an Android-powered device that is set to debut at MWC 2015, of course.
The ARCHOS 50 Oxygen Plus is the latest smartphone from the company, where it claims to deliver outstanding ergonomics in a superb slim design and powerful performance – for what can be deemed to be a relative bargain, as the asking price for an unlocked handset stands at less than $200.
Your eyes will definitely be more than happy with the ultra-bright HD screen that sports a 1,280 × 800 resolution, where it will bring a slew of images as well as videos to life. Despite being extremely slim, which will no doubt have a say in the battery size eventually, the battery life is maximized thanks to an energy efficient way of engineering. All in all, this smartphone would not measure more than 0.3” thin when you place it in your pocket.
An octo-core 3G processor will be mated to a powerful GPU, and thi means the ARCHOS 50 Oxygen Plus will be able to enjoy games, video and applications without missing a beat. At the back of the smartphone lies an 8MP camera with LED flash, while selfie lovers can check out the 5MP front facing camera that sports multiple picture taking modes to capture crystal clear memories.
To make sure that you will maximize your life with a single handset, the ARCHOS 50 Oxygen Plus will be equipped with a pair of SIM slots for multi-tasking, and there is also a microSD memory card slot for further expansion purposes.

IKEA, the furniture giant who made flat packs famous all the world over (not to mention their ever delicious meatballs that I simply cannot have enough of!), has the vision and will to deliver wireless charging-capable furniture from April this year onward, now how about that? The world’s biggest furniture manufacturer intends to start selling the likes of tables, work desks, nightstands and other pieces of furniture that will be able to charge up your smartphones sans wires, and this new range will hit North America and Europe this April 15, with plans drawn up to make their way to different regions in due time.
This is a welcome change by IKEA, as they rarely take such a big step forward in technology, as IKEA’s mainstays tend to be huge showroom stores, extremely affordable assemble-it-yourself furniture, and the ilk. I suppose that the inclusion of wireless charging capability in its furniture would mean that it will deliver a greater level of convenience – not to mention one more reason to take the IKEA route the next time you are on the lookout for new furniture.
The Wireless Power Consortium would be happy, too, as they pick up a new and powerful ally in the form of IKEA and the Qi technology.

These handsets ought to target those who are looking for something which is functional, and yet is fully capable of delivering what one would expect in a fine looking package – and at a budget too, of course. Haier Smartwatch Targets Children
Posted in: Today's Chili[MWC 2015] You know for sure that the world of wearable technology is certainly growing by leaps and bounds – especially when you take into consideration how there are more and more companies introducing their very own take on what a smartwatch ought to look like – and be. With the Apple Watch being in the pipeline, things would pick up even more from there. Having said all of that, Haier of China has just come up with their new smartwatch that was specially designed to cater to the little ones.
Yes sir, anything that has to do with the world of consumer electronics would be sensitive enough – so to place such equipment in the hand of children? That might be suicidal to some, but not for Haier as they must have figured out a way to toughen up these timepieces.
The Haier Smartwatch for children will come with a 0.96” OLED display as well as a two-day battery life, and not only that, it has been deemed to be waterproof to up to 30m. I would personally take that with a pinch of salt – water resistant would be more like it, as an actual waterproof watch would cost a bomb – and what would your child be doing 30 meters down in the water in the first place at such a young age?
Arriving in a range of colors as well as boasting of a microphone and speaker in order to help them make calls, there is also a dedicated red SOS button which will enable one to send an alert to up to three different numbers just in case there is an emergency.

[MWC 2015] So, we have seen a smartwatch by Haier for the little ones, which is capable of even accompanying you underwater up to 30 meters before its seals give way to the water, but what about the adults? You know – the folks who actually have the money to pay for this kind of stuff for their progeny. Well, it seems that senior citizens, too, are not left out of the picture with a model rolled out just for them.
This particular senior citizen model, too, would carry all of the same features from that of the children’s watch, except that it comes with a form factor that is more suitable for such an age. Yup, that is correct – this means you too, will be able to bring your grandchildren scuba diving up to 30 meters with the respective timepieces on your wrists without missing a beat.
I just hope that at that age, one’s eyes will be able to check out all that the 0.96” OLED screen is able to offer. At least it boasts of a fine looking leather strap that will arrive in either black or red – no doubt to cater to the different genders, and Haier has fallen back on the term “remote listening” instead of “baby monitor” where it is meant for caregivers who might not be able to contact the wearer by phone, for instance.

Haier Smart Collar Announced
Posted in: Today's Chili[MWC 2015] For some of us, having a pet is far more than just having an animal around the home to keep us company – pets can be therapeutic at times, not to mention bring us joy along the way. Well, it seems that if you were to get a smartwatch by Haier for your child as well as one for your aging father, how about poor little Fido who sits there forlornly by the corner, wagging its tail, wondering whether there is something for it as well? Fret not – Haier has not forgotten about Fido, where they have just revealed the Huawei Smart Collar.
The Huawei Smart Collar is a connected collar for your four legged furry friends, where it does feature all of the features found in the above mentioned smart watches, except for the fact that there is no need for a display. There is a red SOS button that has been specially designed in order for just about anyone who has located your pet to call you straight from the collar, now how about that?
This is made possible thanks to the integrated microphone and speaker. Apart from that, it is also full well possible to enjoy remote listening – although it remains to be seen whether one is able to speak straight to the pet as you would with some smart collars that we have seen in the past. we’ve seen before. It looks more suitable for our canine friends though. There is still no word on pricing or availability as at press time.

Huawei MediaPad X2
Posted in: Today's ChiliAt MWC 2015, Huawei is launching its MediaPad X2 tablet/phone, which is a direct descendant of the MediaPad X1 which was pretty popular in China. When I discussed about that X1 model in Shanghai (at Huawei HQ), I’ve been told that it has a loyal following of users who like using a 7-inch phone (oftentimes with a Bluetooth headset), but that this usage model isn’t as popular in the west where people have historically been reluctant to use such a large device as a phone (I remember people mocking the original Galaxy Note as well, only to be proven wrong a couple of years later).
The MediaPad X2 builds on the same foundation, but is designed to push the concept further with a better Kirin 930 processor, which is the main upgrade for this second-generation MediaPad X. The Kirin series is designed by hiSilicon, a subsidiary of Huawei. This updated design has 8 CPU cores (ARM A53 core design) and an ARM Mali T628 graphics processor (GPU), which places it in a mid-range “plus” performance category.
The MediaPad X2 should be able to handle games decently, but won’t be able to compete in performance with high-end devices priced in the $650+ range (not surprising). On the other hand, it should be just as good for handling multimedia videos — but its 1080p screen has 2 to 3 times less pixels than other high-end phones.
The rest of the X2 is very similar to the original X1 design: the body looks nearly the same, and the battery capacity stands at 5000 mAh (12 hours of video, according to Huawei).
Finally, the software has been upgraded and The X2 will ship with Android 5.x aka Lollipop. The Huawei MediaPad X2 reinforces the original concept, but won’t otherwise convinced others to jump on board if they haven’t before. It’s typical for extreme devices like these that cater to a somewhat hyper-specialized user base. That said, even if you don’t own once, it’s fair to recognize that it serves that 7” phone crowd quite well.
