Virginia Hospital Placed In Lockdown After Prisoner Escapes

A hospital in Falls Church, Virginia, was placed in lockdown early Tuesday after a prisoner escaped, The Washington Post reported.

Police in Fairfax County confirmed to NBC News that the Inova Fairfax Hospital was placed in lockdown, and that a manhunt was underway.

Police reportedly told ABC 7 News that the officers were transferring inmate Wossen Assaye from Alexandria jail to the hospital when he allegedly overpowered a sheriff’s deputy, stole his gun and escaped. Fairfax County Police disputed this on Twitter, saying Assaye was in the custody of a private security guard when he fled.

John Gonzalez of ABC7 said on Twitter that police officers are going room to room, looking for the armed suspect. The station also said officers were searching the parking garages and nearby neighborhoods. All entrances to the hospital are closed.

Assaye is a black male, 6 feet tall, 170 pounds and wearing a hospital gown and no shoes.

Police said he should be considered armed and dangerous. Authorities are asking for anyone who sees a man matching the description to call (703) 691-2131.

According to the hospital’s website, the 833-bed facility is Northern Virginia’s only Level 1 trauma center and has been ranked the top medical center in the Washington DC metro area for three years in a row by U.S. News & World Report.

This is a developing story. More to come.

Sony Teases Android 5.0 Lollipop For The Original Xperia Z

xperia z android lollipoThe original Sony Xperia Z was announced back at CES 2013 and at that time was probably one of the better-looking smartphones around. Now given that the handset is 2 years old and with many of its successors having been announced, is there still love for the original Sony Xperia Z? As it turns out there is.

Sony has recently shared a teaser on its Sony Xperia Google+ page in which a photo of the original Xperia Z was posted followed by the tagline of, “Coming soon…” The text in the post also more or less gave it away by saying that despite the handset being two years old, it looks like Sony will not be neglecting the handset and will be giving it its dose of Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Unfortunately Sony did not state when we might be able to expect the update to arrive on the handset but it is probably a pleasant surprise for many Sony Xperia Z owners. Prior to this, Sony had announced that they would be rolling out the Android 5.0 update to the Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, and the Xperia Z2 just to name a few. In fact Sony also include some non-Xperia Z devices such as the Xperia T2 Ultra and the Xperia C3.

In any case we’ll be keeping an eye out for more information regarding the release of the update, but in the meantime are there any Sony Xperia Z owners out there who are pleased by this piece of news?

“We have been blessed to have our children meet and get to spend time with their great-grandparents,” said Trista Larson, who shared a photo of her 80-year-old grandfather Bill and her son Arny with Huff/Post50. “We make sure to tell them every day about their great-grandparents to keep them always in their hearts.”

She said she loves the way the “forever young” Bill gets down to Arny’s level to play. “It is so special to watch them interact, and their special bond grow!” she said.

When we asked readers to share images of great-grandparents with their great-grandkids, we received hundreds of photos that showcase how precious that relationship is.

Check out 16 gorgeous photos — as well as dozens more included in the slideshow below. What beautiful families!

Sony: 6-inch Device Planned, Aims To Ship 38m Smartphones [Rumor]

xperia-t2-ultraThe largest handset that we’ve ever seen from Sony is probably the Sony Xperia Z Ultra which was launched in 2013 with a screen size of 6.44-inches, which is actually pretty damn huge for a smartphone. That being said it looks like Sony could be thinking about releasing a slightly smaller handset, according to a recent report from DigiTimes.

The report claims that Sony’s ODMs have begun to develop a 6-inch smartphone for the company and despite its large screen, it seems that it might not necessarily be a high-end device. Apparently this is still part of Sony’s strategy to focus more on mid-range models and upwards rather than focusing on entry-mid level smartphones. With its 6-inch display and its rumored mid-range status, chances are we could be looking at a successor to the Sony Xperia T2 Ultra, but that’s just speculation on our part.

DigiTimes goes on to report that Sony is also aiming to ship 38 million smartphones in the fiscal year of 2015 which basically runs from April 2015 until March 2016. While this does seem like a large number, it’s actually a slight dip from the previous fiscal year in which Sony had predicted 39.2 million units shipped, but since these aren’t official figures from Sony do take it with a grain of salt for now.

Sony has yet to announce their next-gen flagship smartphone which is the Sony Xperia Z4 who recently made an appearance on GFXBench. The handset is expected to be announced by September 2015 but no word on whether the rumored 6-inch handset will be announced alongside it or at a separate event.

Retire And Start A New Life In Sunny Belize

By Ann Kuffner,InternationalLiving.com

This article comes to us courtesy of InternationalLiving.com, the world’s leading authority on how to live, work, invest, travel, and retire better overseas.

Lynn Ann Snellman and her husband Tony DiPiazza’s lifestyle in Belize is very different to what they knew back in Okemos, Michigan. “Our main reason for leaving was the weather. We crave warmth and sunshine. The winters are intensely cold in Michigan, with lots of snow and ice, and there are lots of cloudy days year-round. Here in Belize we are thrilled to enjoy an active, outdoor lifestyle year-round,” says Lynn.

“We live full-time on the beach in a development on the Placencia peninsula. We enjoy the warm climate, with sea breezes, the dramatic ocean view, and the natural beauty all around us. It’s great to be able to bathe in the sea, snorkel, and kayak right off our own beach. I’ve even watched baby turtles emerge and helped them get to the sea. A couple of months ago that occurred right on our property.”

The couple also chose Belize for its official language — English. “We didn’t want to live somewhere where we couldn’t communicate well with local residents,” says Lynn.

“Before settling, we did our homework. We took many vacation trips to Belize, and in 2003 we decided to spend a couple of weeks exploring the villages on the coast. We rented a four-wheel-drive vehicle and drove from the northernmost town of Corozal to the southernmost town of Punta Gorda. We ultimately chose to buy property on the Placencia peninsula because it has the best beaches in Belize.”

The couple bought 10 years ago and paid $90,000 for their beachfront property. (These days similar lots in Placencia are selling for $200,000.)

Both have residence permits and could work, but they prefer not to. “We are both completely and happily retired,” they say. And they have no problem keeping busy. During the past four years, Tony has built two houses on their property. He first built a small wooden house, for “practice.” It then became a convenient, rent-free place to live while they built their beach house.

Tony has taken a different approach for the beach house. First, he chose to build in concrete. And “we hired a more experienced crew. I acted as the general contractor. That saved us 10 percent to 15 percent on the cost of this house. I learned not to overbuild; we spend so much time outdoors that a large house is unnecessary here.”

Two nights a week Tony also plays beach volleyball at Mangos, a nearby bar. And since the DiPiazzas are animal lovers, Lynn explains, “We have adopted (rescued) two dogs and three cats since we’ve been here. Nearly every day includes a long dog walk on the beach with some of our neighbors.”

Lynn Ann now has time to enjoy reading and practicing yoga. She can access almost any book in minutes on her Kindle. And, fortunately, there’s a yoga studio close to her home. Lynn Ann has also joined the Placencia Rotary Club. She enjoys “giving back” to her new community and notes, “Since the club membership includes native Belizeans, the projects are ones that have true value for the community.”

The couple has settled in and enjoys the local camaraderie in Placencia. “There is a small-town atmosphere here. We socialize with both expats and native Belizeans. We have many more acquaintances than we did in the States. In Belize it is easy for neighbors to become friends, as there is a ‘pioneer’ mindset. In Belize, we don’t hesitate to stop by strangers’ homes to find out more about a feature or plant we admire — and we are typically warmly welcomed.”

Super Mario 64 HD Fan Project Hit With Legal Takedown Request

Just last week we reported on a cool project by Erik Roystan Ross in which he recreated the first level of Super Mario 64 using the Unity engine. As we noted in our post, Ross had no plans to recreate the game in its entirety and was more about showing off the power of the Unity engine, but it looks like regardless of Ross’s intentions, Nintendo isn’t too pleased about it.

The company has recently sent Ross a takedown request claiming that the project infringed upon Nintendo’s intellectual property. The company claims that the game “allows users to play, an electronic game that makes unauthorized use of copyright-protected features of Nintendo’s Super Mario 64 video game.”

To be fair we suppose it is well within Nintendo’s right to request a takedown of the offending content, although for the most part when it comes to fan remakes and other stuff like that, most developers and publishers tend to be flattered and actually encourage such activity since it helps foster a community of dedicated fans and loyal customers.

The game has since been removed from its website and has been replaced with a copy of the takedown request in the process. Bummer, anyone else a little disappointed by this?

7 Pairs Of Shoes Every Woman Over 50 Should Own

There are hundreds of articles and books that will tell you how to cope with turning 50. Trust me — I know how hard this can be. I stayed 49 for several years before deciding to accept my aging body and embrace my true self.

For a while, I followed everyone else’s advice. I stopped dyeing my hair, downsized my life, joined a yoga class, exercised every day (ok, maybe every week), consumed 4 tablespoons of olive oil and drank one glass of red wine every day. Several years later, I’m fully in the swing of things and the only suggestion I still follow consistently is drinking a glass of red wine a day.

That doesn’t mean I’ve become less active. Far from it! I’ve just redirected my energy. As the founder of Sixty and Me, a community of 100,000 boomer women and Boomerly, a website that helps people over 50 to make friends, I’ve had plenty of time to discover how the happiest people among us spend their time.

So, based on my own experience and the advice of the wonderful people in my communities, I wanted to share seven pairs of shoes that every woman should have in her “turning 50 survival kit.”

On the surface, these are just footwear, but, they represent much more than that. I hope that this advice helps you go approach your birthday with confidence, passion and optimism for the years ahead.

Here are seven pairs of shoes every 50-year-old woman should own.

Running Shoes to Help You Chase Your Dreams

If I could offer you one piece of advice for getting the most from life after 50, it would be this — get in shape. This will improve your physical appearance better than any “anti-aging” potion and your self-confidence better than any self-help book.

Having a great pair of running shoes will give you the confidence to chase your dreams and explore your passions. They will motivate you to start an exercise plan and help you feel invincible and in control.

With your new shoes, you will be able to travel to new places in comfort and style. Oh, and, as I discovered the hard way, your new running shoes will keep your hand-eye coordination in tiptop shape. On second thought, if your eye-sight is like mine, maybe go for Velcro.

Reliable Flats to Remind You of the Importance of Simplicity

The happiest older women I know have all embraced a minimalist lifestyle to one degree or another. Focusing on having less and experiencing more will be easier if you can navigate quickly and comfortably. That’s where new flats come in.

Every time you wear your flats, try to remember what is really important in your life. No-one wishes that they had spent more time working when they are on their death bed. They wish that they had spent more time on the simple things — their friends, family, treasures, dreams and passions.

Comfortable Walking Shoes for Staying Social

Turning 50 is scary, in part, because of our changing social circumstances. Our children have left the house and are building their own lives. Many of us are recovering from a divorce. Our relationships at work are changing. As a result, one of the best investments that you can make in your 50s to help you get the most from life in your later years is making friends.

Having a good pair of walking shoes will remind you to get out into the world and meet new people. Keep them handy and never let them gather dust. Explore your passions with others. Use sites like Boomerly to meet like-minded people. Learn to see the world as your playground. It is.

Sturdy Boots to Keep You Tough and Adventurous

As we reach our 50s, there is a tendency to want to withdraw from the world and stick with what’s safe. In my experience, this is a recipe for disaster. Getting the most from life after 50 requires toughness and a willingness to explore.

Having a tough pair of boots will help you to stay adventurous in your 50s. They will help you to stay calm, when others are losing their heads around you. They will help you to counter invisibility – since everyone will hear you coming. They may just keep you safe as well. After all, who’s going to bother a 50-year-old woman in a pair of Dr. Martens?

Stunning High Heels to Remind You that You’re Still Sexy

One of the biggest myths about getting older is that you no longer care about being attractive. Rubbish! We may not buy in to the anti-aging messages that are pushed at us from every direction, but, we still want to express our style and feel beautiful.

Every woman needs a statement piece of clothing in her 50s. Whether you choose a fabulous little black dress or a pair of jeans and a leather jacket, your look will be complete with your high heels. Why not go for something red? Tell the world that you are not someone else’s stereotype. You are a radiant, beautiful woman, who is proud to be 50.

Wellington Boots for When You Feel Silly

Life after 50 doesn’t have to be serious all the time. In fact, there are plenty of things that 5-year-olds can teach us about getting the most from life. So, put your Wellington boots on and get ready to jump in some puddles, hike through the Amazon rain forest, or, maybe, just muck about in the garden.

Don’t forget that childlike laughter is one of the best antidotes for depression. It’s also probably better for removing wrinkles than face cream!

Sensible Heels for Walking Towards a Brighter Financial Future

More boomers than ever are abandoning traditional views of retirement and getting ready for an active life in their 60s and beyond. In fact, according to the Kaufmann Foundation, people aged 55-64 are starting businesses at a faster rate than people in their 20s and 30s. Whether you plan on starting a business or you want to continue working for someone else, you’ll need a sensible pair of heels to keep you moving.

Having a pair of sensible heels in your survival kit reinforces your image as an intelligent and professional woman. There has never been a better time to build a better financial future. Embrace your 50th birthday and make it happen!

2015-03-24-1427217468-6471910-7BeConfident.png

Looking back at my 50th birthday, which seems so close and yet so far away, I wish someone had given me this advice. These shoes will remind you to challenge any aging stereotypes you encounter. They will give you the confidence to explore the world on your own terms. They will tell the world that you refuse to be invisible. They will help you to get the most from life after 50.

What advice would you give to a woman on her 50th birthday? What do you think the secret is to getting the most from life after 50? Please join the discussion and “like” and share this article to keep the conversation going!

11 Weird Things You Didn't Know You Could Bring On A Plane (Including Antlers)

Thanks to the TSA’s incredible Instagram account and some general knowledge about flying, we know what’s not allowed on planes. Don’t bring liquids above 3.4 ounces in your carry-on, leave the fireworks at home, and definitely don’t pack your brass knuckles.

While there is a long lists of things you shouldn’t pack in your luggage, there is also a long list of weird things you actually can bring. Take a look at what we discovered you can bring, and always make sure to check before you fly, as rules could change in a jiffy.

1. Antlers
Though this might be surprising for non-hunters, bringing antlers on a plane is allowed on almost all American airline carriers. Most usually charge a small fee (anywhere from $20 to $200) and ask that the antlers be cleaned and properly wrapped to the best of your ability.

2. Kayaks and bikes
Many airlines let you pack sporting equipment like kayaks, bikes, snowboards and surfboards. It’s worth doing some research before you lug it to the airport, as not all airlines allow all types of items, and certain airlines will make you break down equipment (like your bike) and pack it a certain way.

3. Lighters
One lighter is approved for carry-on luggage, but two lighters or more with fluid must be checked in Department of Transportation-approved cases. People traveling with lighters without fluid may bring as many as they want in the checked luggage.

4. Fishing rods
The TSA says fishing rods are allowed on as either carry-on or checked luggage, but ultimately the decision rests with your airline carrier. So before you trek that fishing gear all the way to the airport, just make sure you can actually bring it on the plane.

5. Human remains
According to a TSA rule, cremated human remains are allowed onboard or in checked baggage. Some airlines do not allow crematory remains as checked baggage, so be sure to check with your airline before flying. For carry on, crematory remains should be placed in a wood, cardboard or plastic container, as metal urns might not be allowed through security.

6. Parachutes
You can bring a parachute in your carry-on or checked luggage. Just make sure the rig is separated from other parts of your luggage, and arrive half an hour early in case the TSA wants to ask you some questions.

7. Pie and cake
Yep, you can bring your pie or cake through security, though it might require a little additional screening.

8. Ice skates and rollerblades
Yep, ice skates and rollerblades are TSA-approved items for either carry-on or checked bags. So whether you’re going to Canada or Florida, you’ll be prepared.

9. Wrenches, pliers and screwdrivers
Make sure your tools are less than 7 inches long, and you can bring them onboard or check them with your luggage.

10. Knitting needles
As long you don’t bring circular thread cutters or any cutter with a blade through security, the TSA says you can bring knitting needles on the plane. If you do happen to have thread cutters or needles with blades, just make sure those go in your checked luggage.

11. Wrapped gifts
If you’re bringing them as your carry-on (which is totally allowed), just note that TSA agents might have to unwrap the gift if they think they see something suspicious. So while you can bring it on the plane, it might be best to wrap it at your final destination.

Happy travels!

7 Times Every Pregnant Woman Could Relate To Duchess Kate

The Duchess of Cambridge always has it together. Whether she’s making a royal appearance, tending to George or playing cricket, it seems as though there is never a hair out of place.

But, as any pregnant woman will tell you, not every day is a glowing skin and perfect hair day. Between swollen feet, aches and pains and even the occasional wedgie, there are some fashion woes no woman is spared from — even if she is royalty. During her second pregnancy, the duchess undoubtedly dealt with at least some of these issues.

Here are seven times our favorite duchess embodied every pregnant woman’s woes — at least from the looks of these hilarious photos.

6 Saavy Life Hacks From The World's Most Successful Leaders

While it’s true that everyone works differently, the world’s most successful leaders often have one thing in common: Their days are marked by certain rituals.

After all, even Mark Zuckerberg needs a little bit of structure: That’s why his resolution for 2014 was to write handwritten thank-you notes every single day of the year. (He readily admits that it wasn’t easy.) The famed Facebook founder has developed quite the reputation when it comes to personal goal setting: In 2010, he vowed to learn Mandarin Chinese, and in 2011 he only ate meat that he slaughtered himself.

While some of these hacks err more on the side of weird — think Tony Hsieh’s penchant for calling his assistants his “Time Ninjas” — others are probably more familiar to you, like Branson’s affinity for tea and long, hot baths.

These are the top six life hacks from some of the biggest names in business:

1. Commit to getting shuteye.

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg is probably one of the best-connected executives in the world, so you might be surprised to learn that she also turns off her phone every night before bed. In a 2013 interview with USA Today, the acclaimed Lean In author explained that she needs to unplug completely in order to get a good night’s sleep.

Sandberg is probably onto something here: Studies show that using electronic devices before going to bed can have a detrimental impact on your sleep. Robert Rosenberg, a sleep medicine specialist at Sleep Disorders Center of Prescott Valley, recently told Yahoo News that the blue light given off by your phone screen prevents the production of melatonin in the body, which is the hormone that makes you feel drowsy.

2. Bake some humor into the daily grind.

Tony Hsieh, the founder and CEO of Zappos, may be seriously successful in the e-commerce industry, but he likes to keep things lighthearted around the office. He told The New York Times, for instance, that the top executives are referred to as “monkeys,” and they sit in what’s called “Monkey Row” at Zappos’s Las Vegas headquarters. He added that his favorite part of the workday is joking around with his “Time Ninjas” — or whom everyone else might mundanely call their executive assistants.

3. Switch it up.

Like Hsieh, Richard Branson is known for being a consummate optimist who’s also committed to having fun. To that end, the Virgin Group founder believes that the best routine is not to have one: Writing in his Live Mint column back in September of 2012, Branson advocated for making every single day unique. While he offers a few of his top tips for success–such as taking breaks throughout the day, drinking English tea, or enjoying a long, hot bath to unwind–he ultimately says that an entrepreneur’s most valuable trait is flexibility.

4. Channel your inner Jedi.

In perhaps one of the stranger displays of entrepreneurial zeal, fashion designer and investor Marc Ecko collects Star Wars memorabilia for good luck.

The habit has helped create an image of Ecko that he himself once described to The New York Times Magazine as “a pop-culture Willy Wonka, crossed with Richard Branson.”

Hey, whatever works.

5. Practice mindfulness.

Many have touted the practice of mindfulness meditation, but perhaps few so vehemently as Def Jam creator and business mogul Russell Simmons. Simmons, who meditates every Sunday morning with a transcendental meditation teacher whom he calls “the monk,” has also published a book about meditation called Success Through Stillness, in which he argues that meditating on a regular basis can help you reach your maximum potential.

6. Read voraciously.

Mark Zuckerberg announced in January that his resolution for 2015 would be to read a new book every other week–and not just books about business. The Facebook founder and top executive wants to learn more about different cultures and belief systems. His first selection was The End of Power by Moises Naim. You can follow Zuck’s book club on the Facebook page: A Year of Books.

What are some of your rituals?
