Onkyo Unveils DAC/Headphone Amp For Mobile Devices

onkyo-dac-ha300-1As you might have heard, Jay-Z has recently relaunched the Tidal music streaming service which will focus on providing lossless audio quality to its subscribers, but what’s the use of being able to enjoy such high quality music if your media device or headphones aren’t capable of supporting it?

That’s where Onkyo steps in. The company has recently announced its DAC-HA300 device which is a DAC and a headphone amplifier combined into one. The idea is to help users better enjoy higher quality audio, and at the same time it will help to drive headphones that might benefit from having a headphone amplifier. Of course not all headphones will need a dedicated amplifier, but if you’re an audiophile who owns such a pair, then perhaps this will come in handy.

It will support both iOS and Android devices but if you’d rather not have the bulk, the Onkyo DAC-HA300 will be able to act as a standalone media player, thanks to its support for as much as 128GB microSD cards. The device will come with a MUSES8920 op-amp and a 32-bit/192kHz TI Burr-Brown PCM1795 DAC, which according to Onkyo was chosen for its “low out-of-band noise performance and excellent resistance to jitter.”

Made out of aluminum, the Onkyo DAC-HA300 will be made available towards the end of April in black where it will be priced at a somewhat steep £499.

Amazon Begins Testing Its Drone Delivery System In Canada

faa-amazon-droneAccording to a report from The Guardian, it seems that Amazon has decided to test out its drone delivery system over in Canada after facing some initial reluctance from the US authorities. The report claims that the company has begun testing out their drones in British Columbia and are trying to see if the drones are capable of carrying packages as heavy as 5lbs and flying through airspace of between 200 and 500 feets at speeds up to 50mph.

Now some of you guys might be wondering, didn’t the US FAA agree to allow Amazon to begin testing its drones? Yes the FAA did agree to that, but according to Amazon, it seems that the drone that the FAA approved for testing was a prototype which has since been made obsolete thanks to technological advances. This is because Amazon had put in the request a while ago but the FAA decided to drag their feet which led to that particular model they applied the approval for to become obsolete.

However over in Canada, it seems that Amazon had to only endure a 3-week wait before they were given the approval to go ahead with their testing. Of course different countries will have different rules and regulations with regards to testing and flying drones, but whatever it is it seems that at the very least, Amazon can begin testing their latest systems in earnest over in Canada.

UK Parents Who Let Underaged Kids Play 18+ Games Could Be Reported

gta-5-pc-delayIt is no secret that despite what the label on the video game box says, children will still play games that are not meant for their age group, but who’s to blame here? Would it be shops and online stores that don’t check the age of their customers, or could it be the fault of the parents who enable such behavior?

As it turns out there are some in the UK who believe that it is the parents’ responsibility to prevent their children from playing games targeted at those aged 18 or older. In a letter being sent to parents of children in both primary and secondary schools in Cheshire, North West England, it seems that the schools are warning parents that if their child is found to be playing such games, the parents themselves could be reported to the police.

The letter reads, “If your child is allowed to have inappropriate access to any game or associated product that is designated 18+, we are advised to contact the police and children’s social care as this is deemed neglectful.” Apparently the schools think that by allowing children underage to have access to such games, it would lead to “early sexualised behaviour” and leave children “vulnerable to sexual exploitation or extreme violence.”

Such topics are generally controversial as there are arguments for both sides, in which some believe that video games are harmless and those who think that it causes harm, but in this case do you guys think the schools are right in reporting parents to the police for “neglect”?

Astoria Characters: The Rememberer

If you don’t know anything about Pedro Fernandez de Unamuno, and most of the world doesn’t, look at his hat.

He’s wearing it so you’ll ask him about it.

Ask Pedro about his Boina.

It’s a black Boina, a Basque-style beret that he sets rakishly atop of what’s left of his wispy white hair.

It, and the Spanish flag unfurled across the living room bookcase like a banquet banner, remind him of the homeland he was forced to flee.

Pedro, an Old World charmer who kisses visitors on each cheek, can tell you the story in your choice of English, Spanish or French.

Pedro is from Santander, Spain.

A student of history and philosophy who plays Beethoven and Chopin on a Yamaha keyboard in his idle hours, Pedro stands tall (officially, he’s 5-foot-5, an inch shorter than Napoleon) during his recitation.

“I may be small,” he says, adding that age has shaved off a handful of those inches, “but I am great.”

It starts with his role, or more accurately, his non-role, in the Spanish Civil War.

The flag reminds him of home.

Pedro and his family were living in the Basque Country’s city of Santander, which, long before Pedro’s time, was the main seaport for the Old Castile in the Bay of Biscay.

In 1938, when la guerra was raging, it was not a safe place to be, especially when your father was fighting for the Republic, the losing side.

His mother was sent to a concentration camp in France, and 5-year-old Pedro, his older brother and two sisters were among thousands of children relocated to various countries by the International Office of Refugees.

Pedro likes to draw; this work is from 1966.

Pedro and his siblings were transported by truck to Brussels, Belgium, where they were summarily separated.

“It was traumatic for me because I was so little,” Pedro says. “I cried a lot.”

Pedro was adopted by Jean Fonteyne, a prominent lawyer, communist politician and resistance fighter.

By the time the Civil War had ended with victory for Francisco Franco’s fascists, World War II had begun, and Pedro didn’t get an opportunity to return to Spain for a dozen years.

At 5, he was sent to Belgium as a refugee.

“The country was in terrible shape,” he says. “There were hunger, terror, executions and mass jailings. And I couldn’t speak Spanish to communicate with my parents; I only knew French.”

He returned to Belgium, where his future was just as bleak.

“The government required me to work in a coal mine,” he says. “After a couple of months, I decided that it would be better to be alive, in misery, above ground than to die below, so I went back to Spain.”

The Franco government declared him an enemy.

There, because of his relationship with Fonteyne, Pedro was placed under police surveillance.

“They suspected me of having a secret mission because of him,” Pedro says. “They followed me for years, and the government issued me the ID number 3939393939, which I found out after I left was the classification for an enemy.”

After serving a mandatory stint in the military, Pedro got work in a machine shop.

“Through all of this, I was a survivor,” he says. “I used psychology as a weapon.”

The manuscript for Mes Trains de Nuit.

A chance encounter on a train brought him to New York City.

“I met a French lady who was a translator for the United Nations,” he says. “She then became my wife.”

With her help, Pedro got a job with the Tunisian consul.

“But I wanted to work for an American company,” he says. “I didn’t know any English, so I took a course at Hunter College.”

He came to NYC in his 20s.

It worked: Pedro got a job with Kerns Manufacturing Corp., the Long Island City-based maker of aerospace products.

As the decades unfolded, Pedro became a company supervisor, and his personal life took some unexpected turns.

He would take three more wives (Nos. 1, 2 and 3 succumbed to divorce, and Mrs. No. 4 is 20 years Pedro’s junior) and produce four children.

His one constant, his Kerns job, ended a couple of years ago, when he was in his late 70s.

‘I may be small, but I am great.’

“I was laid off because there was not enough money to keep me,” the 82-year-old says sadly. “I’m healthy. I could have kept working. I would like to work part time, but nobody will hire a man my age.”

Pedro didn’t know what he was going to do with all his free time, so he started writing the story of his life.

His autobiography, Mes Trains de Nuit (My Night Trains), ends with Pedro’s arrival in New York City at age 24.

The 450 hand-written pages are in French, the language Pedro feels most comfortable with. They fill five large-format spiral notebooks; one of his sons is typing the text for publication.

“It was therapeutic,” he says. “I wanted to leave something behind for my children to remember me, and I didn’t want what I went through to be lost. I stopped the story at age 24 because I had a good, normal life here.”

2015-02-22-Pedro25.jpg

Pedro, wistful for the life he might have lived.

The life he lived in America is the one he wishes he had had in Spain. It pains him to think of what might have been.

“It would have been better to be united with my family,” he says. “We would have suffered, but we would have suffered together.”

He used to visit Spain a lot, but he hasn’t been in a long time, which is what a couple of years seems like to him.

His Social Security and pension, which are all he has, don’t cover the cost.

Pedro sighs and sets the Boina aside.

Firefighter Falls Through Burning Roof In Frightening Scene Caught On Video

A Fresno, California, firefighter is in critical condition after falling through the roof of a burning garage in a frightening scene that was caught on video Sunday.

The footage shows a wall of flames shooting up from the garage, engulfing Capt. Pete Dern after the roof gives way under his feet.

CAUTION: The video above may be difficult to watch and contains some NSFW language.

The Fresno Fire Department released the video to local media to highlight the extreme dangers firefighters face on a regular basis.

Dern, 49, was pulled out of the flames within minutes by firefighters and bystanders.

We could hear people screaming. We could hear people running in to help. I have to believe it was traumatic for the citizens to watch, too,” Battalion Chief Todd Tuggle told the Fresno Bee.

Dern suffered second- and third-degree burns over about 65 percent of his body, Fresno City Firefighters – Local 753 wrote on Facebook.

He is still in critical condition and has a long road to recovery, physicians estimate 14 to 15 more surgeries in the several months to come,” the update said, calling the 25-year veteran one of the most respected fire captains and a mentor to many in the department.

He had burns that went all the way around his extremity,” Dr. William Dominic told NBC News. “We’ll be taking care of Mr. Dern for a long time.”

Dominic told the network that Dern was being given enough medication to be “comfortable but not totally comatose.”

In addition to the burns, Dern also suffered inhalation injuries, the Fresno Bee reported. The newspaper said he was on the roof to provide ventilation, a standard technique in fighting this type of fire, before falling into the building. The fall occurred in full view of both his fellow firefighters and a crowd of bystanders who had gathered to watch the blaze.

“I almost had an anxiety attack because we didn’t know what was going to happen. I honestly didn’t think he was going to make it,” bystander Sooji Lee, who caught the scene on video, told the local ABC station.

An online fundraiser has been set up to help Dern and his family. Those wishing to contribute, and follow his progress, can do so at this link.

“It is obvious to family and friends Pete is trying to communicate and he understands their words which is comforting,” wrote fundraiser organizer Karey Wedemeyer in the latest update.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Some of them might even be contagious.

The Science of Why Chicken Goes Bad So Quickly

Food-borne bacteria are the primary cause of spoilage and food poisonings. Thriving in moist, low-acid environments where lots of protein is present, pathogens like Salmonella, Campylobacter and E. coli live with the bird during its life and stay with its meat after slaughter; likewise, other bacteria, such a Acinetobacter and Pseudomonads fluroescens, putida or fragi, thrive on the meat after it’s processed. Given chicken’s somewhat unique qualities, quick spoilage is inevitable, and can only be mitigated by careful attention to time, temperature and moisture.
