Vaptur iOS App Records Moments That Already Happened: A Clip to the Past

iOS devices have good cameras but limited storage, so recording videos on them can be a hassle especially if you’re only waiting for a particular moment to happen. That’s what the new app Vaptur is trying to solve. It’s a video recording app that lets you see and record moments a few seconds after they occur. It’s like a TiVo for real life.

vapture_delayed_recording_app_ios_1zoom in

Vaptur is a one-trick pony – it cannot record in real-time. What it does is temporarily save small bits of footage, which you’ll see in a small window while the app is running. This gives you an ample amount of time to inspect what happened and see if it’s worth saving. By default you’ll be able to record events that happened 8 seconds ago, but you can adjust that delay in the app’s settings.

As of this writing Vaptur is available on the App Store at a discounted launch price of $2 (USD) and will later sell for $3. I think it’s a clever app, but it should have an option to put the delayed footage on the main display and the real-time view in the small window. That would make it less confusing for me.

Windows 10 Start Menu May Have A Blurry Glass Effect

windows-10-blurry-glass-effect

Microsoft is still seeding preview builds of Windows 10 so it goes without saying that the new software is not exactly finished. The company is expected to release Windows 10 later this year but until then it will continue with the preview program so that people can test out the new software as Microsoft puts the finishing touches. It appears that internal builds of Windows 10 might include a blurry glass effect on the Start Menu.

If the effect feels familiar that’s because you’ve probably seen it before. It’s quite identical to the Aero Glass effect that made an appearance in Windows Vista and Windows 7, but was left out in Windows 8.

From the looks of it the blurry glass effect will make a return in Windows 10, even if it’s limited to the Start Menu only. The leaked images don’t show this effect on app windows. The effect is only applied to the Start Menu and it disappears when the menu morphs into the fullscreen Start Screen.

Microsoft’s 2015 BUILD conference is just one day away and it’s clear that the company has more to unveil regarding Windows 10. It’s possible that Microsoft may talk about UI changes that are on the cards for Windows 10, as well as any other tweaks that Windows fans should expect from the new software.

Windows 10 is expected to be released at some point during summer 2015.

First New Dragon Ball Series In Two Decades Debuts This July

dragon-ball-gt

Anime fans are surely going to love this. 18 years after Dragon Ball GT ended it has now been confirmed that a new Dragon Ball series is going to debut this July. Its going to be the first new Dragon Ball series in almost two decades, and what’s even more exciting is the fact that series creator Akira Toriyama will once again be in charge of the new series.

It has been over 18 years since Dragon Ball GT ended with Goku defeating Majin Buu. The new series is going to be called Dragon Ball Chou, where Chou stands for Super.

The reason why they have decided to call the new series Chou is because this word is always used in Dragon Ball commercials, games and almost everything associated with it, so it made sense to use it for the moniker of the new series.

The new series takes place after Goku has defeated Majin Buu and the world is once again a peaceful place. As previously mentioned, the story will be handled by Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama, which means fans of the anime are certainly going to want to see the new series.

Dragon Ball Chou will first air in Japan this July.

What the $15 Fight Means for the Franchise World

Regardless of your stance on the $15 fight sweeping across the nation, the matter is here to stay. In reality, increasing minimum wage isn’t a new concept. Back in my heyday, minimum wage was $2 an hour. It has more than tripled since then.

As cost of living increases, so will minimum wage. It’s inevitable.

But, as this particular minimum wage debate is focused on several large franchises, and a few large corporations, it is increasingly relevant to the franchise industry. Particularly models that rely heavily on minimum wage employees.

Here are several things to consider as the $15 Fight continues to gain momentum:

Federal Minimum Wage Isn’t Wavering

At least for now, the minimum wage increase hasn’t gained Federal attention. Congress doesn’t seem to have motivation to address the issue. While minimum wage varies by state, the Federal standard stays at $7.25 an hour.

President Barack Obama has proposed a Federal increase to $10 an hour. With elections on the horizon, odds are that this issue will feature more debate than action.

City Specific Wage Increases

Just because the Federal wage remains at a standstill doesn’t mean franchisors are in the clear. This issue has foregone petitioning Congress and is now city specific.

Seattle has already approved an increase to a $15 minimum wage, to be phased in over the next seven years. Both San Diego and Los Angeles are expected to see minimum wage increases on the ballot this year, to $15 and $12 respectively.

Another interesting development has been the targeting of specific industries. Los Angeles City Council has passed a law requiring large hotels within city limits to pay a $15.37 minimum. That targeted measure hasn’t been well received by the hospitality industry. The longevity of it will be resolved in the courts. The April $15 protests are focused primarily on fast food franchises.

Be aware of the changing landscape in your city and specific industry.

Automation & Efficiency

Wage increases are inevitable. If it isn’t this year, it will be another year. Whether or not it is $15, is harder to say. But, know for sure that minimum wage will increase at some point.

It’s time to explore automation and implement efficiency measures within your franchise. How can you decrease your dependency in labor to offset the increasing costs?

Start with surveying your franchisees. See what measures have worked well to increase production. Other solutions can include bringing in a consultant to evaluate workflow or pricing.

The best long-term play is to get ahead of rising costs. Don’t be caught unprepared down the road.

Building in Flexibility for Pricing

One thing that is clear is that the Federal minimum wage isn’t the standard anymore. Even state standards can’t be trusted as the main indicator of wage requirements.

Basic business principles indicate that pricing will reflect wages to some extent. As a franchisor, you need to give franchisees flexibility in pricing to reflect the wage costs of their city.

On the other side, you don’t want a rogue franchisee trying to undercut the competition in their area.

There are different things you can do to monitor these practices. One would be to set a price range for products. Another would be to meet with franchisees in a region to determine the best steps moving forward as wages increase.

Overall, just be aware of how wage increases will affect your franchises. Be willing to come to the table with solutions and ideas to help ease the impact.

Potential for Positive Growth & Innovation

There’s the potential for several positive things to develop from increased wages.

1) Decreased Turnover

With many employees struggling to make ends meet on $7.25 an hour, a new position offering a 50¢ increase justifies a career move. This results in high turnover. By increasing wages, employees will not be as tempted to change companies as often.

Decreasing turnover has been shown to:

  • Increase performance;
  • Improve customer service;
  • Reduce hiring costs;
  • Improve employee morale.

Those all positively impact your business.

2) Increased Productivity

Studies have proven that financial stress has a negative impact on productivity. While wage increases may or may not resolve that, it will help ease the strain.

3) Showcase Your Position on Fair Wages

It’s not just low-wage employees joining in the movement for an increased minimum wage. There is a large percentage of the population that want to support positive efforts for low-income workers. And in many cases, that portion of the population is willing to pay more to support those measures.

Position your franchise as a leader in the movement to provide fair wages. Encouraging consumers will likely voice their support through their purchasing power.

Conclusion

Regardless of whether or not your city is currently looking to implement minimum wage increases, you need to be aware of the changes in the industry. More importantly, you need to be preparing for them.

One way or another, wages will increase. What will that mean for your business model?

The 'After' Myth

After.

It’s here.

In my first post, Before, 3 years ago, I said “I’m not to After yet, but I’m closer to After than to Before.”

I now weigh 117-120 pounds (depending on the day), and standing at 5-foot 6-inches, that measurement means that After is very, very here. But, before you congratulate me, dear readers, and dear friends and family, I have to come clean with you: I don’t feel like I’m at After. I’m terrified of being at After. And, I don’t like that After is here.

2015-04-22-1429701686-9255817-food.jpg

The tagline of my personal blog is “uncovering myself one pound at a time.” Throughout this process, I’ve spoken strongly about how my relationship with food and myself was what caused my weight struggles. I stand by that. The thing is, the symptoms have resolved faster than I’ve been able to treat the deeper disease.

I’ve lost the weight, but I’ve failed to uncover and learn to truly love myself in the process. Truthfully, I have no idea who I am without “needs to lose weight” being one of the primary parts of my identity.

This is why I have not been posting lately. Because my blog is not about weight loss — it’s about life gain. I could not bear to blog about the beautiful things one can gain in life by learning to love yourself while, in the background, hating myself so hard while the weight melted off. Progressing on the outside while regressing internally. Because, that’s the truth, readers.

The last stretch of this weight loss hasn’t been healthy or happy. It’s been agony. It’s been sad. It’s been an exercise in mourning.

2015-04-22-1429701727-4273638-dog.jpg

I’ve gotten so good at putting on the happy face. At “smile, nod, yes, thank you, I have lost a lot. No, I’m not trying to lose any more; you don’t need to worry.” I’m very good at this script, but it’s been such a lie. The truth is my body melted away, and I stared at myself in the mirror not understanding why I couldn’t love the skin I’m in. Why? I thought After was the goal!

But I made a mistake.

A crucial mistake.

I forgot that the number on the scale is only a number. Only just a number. It’s not a before. It’s not an after. Getting that number to a certain set of digits is not my After.

I’m not at After. There is no After — happily ever or otherwise. There is only today. Just today — During.

2015-04-22-1429701778-954176-couple.jpg

I tell you this now not to discourage you but to hopefully prevent someone from making the mistake that I did and associating After with a number. I weigh 120 pounds and still struggle with my weight. Losing weight does not mean you no longer struggle with your weight. I wish I had truly understood that. I still struggle with food. I still struggle with me.

Looking at the picture I put first in this post, I have to pause. I look at me — past vs. present. That is me. All of those pictures are of me. People say they do not recognize the girl in the other pictures. I’m here to say: that girl is me.

Don’t look at her as an abomination, because enough people, myself included, did that already.

Don’t congratulate me on no longer being her. I still am her. And doesn’t she deserve to be?

Don’t tell me I look better. I don’t. I look different.

Don’t speak of her as if she is a poor, piteous person. She’s not.

She’s me.

She’s standing right here, and she is fucking strong.

2015-04-22-1429701833-6001069-hiking.jpg

There. Is. No. After.

There’s no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow of weight loss because the rainbow has no end.

There is today. There is now. There is during. There is life.

I uncovered myself one pound at a time. Now, I must recover myself. I must discover myself. And that… that is the new goal. Not numbers. Not sizes. Not inches.

Me. I am the goal. Finding. Loving. Being.

Can anybody hear me?

Can I Refinance My Student Loans if I Didn't Finish College?

Financing one’s higher education is a struggle for many as the average student debt for the graduating class of 2014 exceeded $30,000. Even if you didn’t finish college though, you’re not necessarily stuck with your potentially high interest student loans.

If you would like to lower your interest rates or change your repayment terms, refinancing may be a great option for you. As long as you can prove to a lender that you are a low risk candidate of defaulting on your loans, you will likely receive a refinancing offer.

Here are some key factors making this possible:

  1. Debt to income: This is usually assessed as a ratio of your monthly debt to your monthly income, to help prove to a lender that you have the capital available to repay your loan each month. Minimizing this ratio will help you receive a better offer from a lender.
  2. Credit profile: Your credit profile is very important to lenders. This provides a context for lenders to understand whether or not you will have good payment history over the life of your loan. Credit scores above 640 have the best chance to receive competitive offers from refinancing lenders. The better your credit score, the likely better the interest rate. However, adding a cosigner is a great way to add credibility to your profile in order to receive the best offer possible.
  3. Work History: Lenders will often review your work history to assess your risk as a borrower. For graduates without degrees, lenders may require a more substantial work history to receive a refinancing offer. Employment for at least one to two years post exiting from your degree program will make you an ideal candidate.

Is refinancing worth your time?

It can be! The refinancing market has opened up with a variety of lenders on the market willing refinance your loans. Interest rates are also at market lows with rates starting below 2% APR, so savings can be significant. As competition in the market increases, lending institutions are pressured to find new ways to attract customers, and one way is by streamlining and making the process as simple as possible.

Is there a disadvantage to not having a degree?

Some lenders do require a college degree or a degree from a qualifying institution to be eligible for refinancing. Therefore, if you contact one refinancing lender you may not be eligible and end your search prematurely.

Visit Credible to compare multiple lenders side by side and see what refinancing offers may be extended to you.

Obama On Baltimore: 'This Is Not New'

President Barack Obama on Tuesday addressed the eruption of protests and riots in Baltimore following the death of Freddie Gray, condemning the violent demonstrations while acknowledging that the underlying problems plaguing the city are “not new” and will require national “soul-searching” to solve.

During a press conference with Japan’s prime minister, Shinzo Abe, Obama was asked by NBC News’ Chris Jansing about the growing frustration that not enough is being done in communities like Baltimore.

Obama said his thoughts are with Gray’s family as well as the police injured in Monday’s protests, and he criticized the violent approach taken by some demonstrators.

“There’s no excuse for the kind of violence we saw yesterday,” he said. “It is counterproductive. When individuals get crowbars and start prying open doors to loot, they’re not protesting. They’re not making a statement. They’re stealing. When they burn down a building they’re committing arson, and they’re destroying and undermining businesses and opportunities in their own communities that rob jobs and opportunities from people in that area.”

Obama said the violent protests “distracted” from the largely peaceful protests over the weekend.

“They were constructive and they were thoughtful,” he said of those demonstrations. “And frankly it didn’t get much attention. And one burning building will be looped on television … and the thousands of demonstrators who did it the right way have been lost in the discussion.”

He continued, “Since Ferguson and the task force that we put together, we have seen too many incidences of what appears to be police officers interacting with individuals — primarily African-American, often poor — in ways that raise troubling questions. It comes up, it seems like, once a week now. Or once every couple of weeks. So I think its pretty understandable why the leaders of civil rights organizations, but more importantly moms and dads, might start saying this is a crisis. What I’d say is this has been a slow rolling crisis.”

“This is not new,” he said. “And we shouldn’t pretend this is new.”

Obama urged police unions to work with communities and “acknowledge that this is not good for police.”

“We have to own up to the fact that occasionally there are going to be problems here,” he said.

However, he added, change needs to go beyond law enforcement.

“We can’t just leave this to the police. I think there are police departments that have to do some soul-searching. I think there are some communities that have to do so some soul-searching. But I think we as a country have to do some soul-searching. This is not new. It’s been going on for decades,” he said. “If we are serious about solving this problem, then we’re gong to not only help the police, we’re going to have to think about what we can do, the rest of us.”

He pointed to policy changes including investing in infrastructure, bolstering early education and reforming the criminal justice system.

“That’s hard. That requires more than just the occasional news report or task force,” he said. “If we really want to solve the problem, we could, it’s just it would require everybody saying this is important, this is significant and that we just don’t pay attention to these communities when a CVS burns. And we don’t just pay attention when a man gets shot or has his spine snapped.”

Violent protests broke out in the Maryland city on Monday following the funeral for Gray, the 25-year-old who died last week after suffering a spinal injury while in police custody. At least 15 police officers were injured and 27 individuals were arrested during Monday’s protests.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) declared a state of emergency and activated the National Guard, making 5,000 troops available to patrol the city.

Betty White Is Rad and So Can You

2015-04-28-1430228926-2421958-bettywhiteportraitftr.jpg

The incomparable Betty White was honored over the weekend with a lifetime achievement award at the Daytime Emmys. And what a lifetime it has been. Her career started in 1939, she won her first Emmy in 1952, and she is still working regularly today, giving her the longest career ever for a woman in show business, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. And being a third of her age, I’m certainly no aging expert, so I won’t even pretend that living a life like hers will help us age better and longer. But no matter what your age, don’t we all want to be a little more like Betty White? Here are five-and-a-half ways we can channel our inner Betty:

1. Enjoy your work. This might sound easy for Hollywood royalty, but having been involved in “the biz,” I can tell you that it’s a grind. Even when you get to the top, it’s hard to stay there. Just ask Lindsay Lohan.

2. Make fun of yourself. Her acceptance speech for her latest honor is what we have come to expect from her: It was endearing, humble and hilarious. “To still be working is so much thanks to you… and your mothers and fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers.” After a brief pause for applause, she continued: “And a couple of great-grandfathers when I was younger.” She has an ability to tie in three H’s — humor, humility, and history into one run-on sentence… and the world could use more of that… the three H’s, I mean… not run-on sentences… just to be clear.

3. Give. Her impact in the community goes well beyond the television set. She was an animal rights activist before it was a cool hobby that could improve the look of your celebrity persona on Twitter.

4. Love. You can see from her boundless energy that she loves what she does, and her personal life has that same passion. Her longtime husband Allen Ludden passed away in 1981; years later, she was asked if she would ever marry again and she said, “Once you’ve had the best, who needs the rest?”

5. Try new things. Betty is open to just about anything from being the butt of the jokes in a crude but hilarious roast on Comedy Central, to making a guest appearance on a professional WWE wrestling show. This career formula has audiences constantly wondering what the next chapter will bring.

And five-and-a-half: Be golden! Betty may have played the simple and naïve Rose Nylund from St. Olaf, Minnesota, but if you grew up a child of the ’80s like me, you know she stole the show. And a generation later, she still shines in the spotlight, proving that the joke is on us.
