$41.8m Casino Jackpot Payout Denied To Grandmother Due To “Computer Error”

miss-kittyIt is always nice to have a whole lot more money than what one has at the moment, as money does give us options. The thing is, not everyone will be able to spend the extra money wisely. Well, it is a shame to bring you word that a 90-year-old woman from Illinois was denied a whopping $41.8 million bonus on a video penny slot machine after she lost a court case – with a computer glitch being cited as the cause.

90-year old grandmother Pauline McKee was happily feeding the Miss Kitty game coins at a casino when she picked up 185 credits, which is the equivalent of $1.85. However, there was a message that appeared on screen, touting that she picked up a bonus that is worth a whopping $41,797,550.16, now this is certainly unbelievable. Needless to say, the casino flatly refused to pay out, laying claim that this happened due to a computer glitch.

A grandmother of 13, Ms. McKee went ahead to sue the casino, but the Iowa Supreme Court decided to throw out her case after hearing it. The casino claimed that on-screen rules have already been a very clear indicator that “malfunction voids all pays and plays”. So far, the maximum payout has been capped at $10,000 for that machine, and the authorities are still unable to figure out how to replicate the error.

BLU Selfie Sports 13MP Cameras

blu-selfieWhen you have a smartphone that comes with the name BLU Selfie, you can be assured that this is not a device that will sport poor quality cameras – and thankfully, the BLU Selfie, despite not being made by one of the more notable smartphone manufacturers in the market, did not decide to skimp on quality, which is why this particular handset will come with not just one, but two 13MP cameras, now how about that?

The BLU Selfie lives up to its name then, as with a pair of 13MP cameras, with one of it in front while the other is in the back, you can be sure that it will be able to shoot great looking still shots – and selfies too, of course, so that it can live up to its name.

The asking price of $249 a pop is definitely something that is worth looking at, taking into consideration how this is a standalone and unlocked device, arriving in blue, black or white shades. Apart from that, it will sport a 4.7” display with a 1280 × 720 resolution, a MediaTek 6592 octa-core 1.7GHz processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB of internal memory, a microSD memory card slot, Android 4.4 KitKat, and a 2,300mAh battery. Any takers for such a handset? [Press Release]

Instagram Releases Three New Filters And Emoji Hashtags

instagram-new-filters

Back in December Instagram introduced five new filters which the community gratefully received so it’s not surprising to see the Facebook-owned company introduce some more. Today Instagram has released three new filters and has also made an interesting addition, users will now be able to insert emoji hashtags into their posts. The three new filters released today are called Lark, Reyes and Juno.

Instagram explains that these three filters are “inspired by weekend adventures outdoors.” These modern, subtle filters brighten and enhance photos. Lark desaturates reds and brings out the blues and greens, it’s recommended for landscapes.

Reyes adds a vintage and dusty look to photos while Juno tints cool tones green and brings out warm tones for vibrant photos of people.

It’s now possible to use emojis in hashtags on Instagram. Emojis are increasingly becoming popular and they’re great for communicating regardless of what language you speak.

Emoji hashtags can be added to photos and videos posted on Instagram, the hashtags can be searched on the Explore page and also when they’re added in captions.

The updated Instagram app for iOS and Android which brings all of these improvements is now live on the App Store and the Google Play Store.

Drones To Plant A Billion Trees Annually?

Global warming is a very real topic, and definitely not one to be joked about, as there is only one planet earth, and all of us happen to be living on it, with no where else that is viable for us to survive. An ex-NASA engineer has a bright idea – why not plant more trees along the way? This is a pretty sound idea, and a basic one of course, but just how many trees should be planted? A million? 10 million? No, the figure is a whole lot more ambitious actually, as he is looking forward to plant a whopping one billion trees each year, and this will be made possible with a little bit of help from drones, of course.

Just how far will planting a billion trees each year go in solving climate issues in the world, we do not really know, but at least the drones will be able to do their part when it comes to planting forests of seedlings.

Lauren Fletcher, the founder of BioCarbon Engineering, shared, “We are going to counter industrial scale deforestation using industrial scale reforestation.” Fletcher was an environmental engineer who worked for two decades with NASA, and intends to make use of drone technology in order to plant up to a billion trees annually – all without using a single human hand to do so directly. The drones will go about their jobs by flying two or three meters above the ground, before firing out pods which contain pre-germinated seeds which will be covered in a nutritious hydrogel.

Galaxy Note 3 Android 5.0 Lollipop Update Released By U.S. Cellular

galaxy-note-3-review-05

Multiple carriers in the country today released the Lollipop update for select devices. T-Mobile kicked off the day with Lollipop for the Galaxy Note 4. Sprint later released Android 5.0 for the LG G2. Now we have U.S. Cellular joining the fray as the carrier has finally released Android 5.0 Lollipop for the Galaxy Note 3. The update is based on Android 5.0 and has build number N900R4TYUCOC3.

Galaxy Note 3 owners on U.S. Cellular should expect to see a new user interface with Material Design elements after the update has been installed. Lockscreen notifications are a major feature in this update, they’ll also notice performance improvements and overall enhancements once they have jumped up to Lollipop.

U.S. Cellular is rolling out the update over-the-air as most updates are these days so it shouldn’t be long before its available for all users. Alternatively users can try to manually download the update by using the Samsung Kies desktop software.

Now that this carrier has finally released Lollipop, this means that all major mobile carriers in the country have now updated Galaxy Note 3 to Lollipop.

As many of us have come to expect by now this is going to be a hefty update so users should definitely connect to a good Wi-Fi network before they install it, this is actually a prerequisite and the download won’t begin until you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network.

Obama’s Unclassified Emails Hacked?

russia-hackedAs we mentioned earlier this morning concerning Tesla’s website and Twitter account being hacked over the weekend, there is precious little out there that cannot get hacked once it is brought online. It does not matter if you happen to be the most powerful man in the world, it looks as though Russian hackers have managed to gain access to President Obama’s unclassified emails after compromising the White House computer system in 2014.

Apparently, the full picture was not shared, as the breach ended up being a whole lot more intrusive than what was originally thought. Officials have also conceded that sensitive information that were stored in the unclassified system were accessed by the hackers, which certainly does not bode well no matter which way you look at it.

The hack was discovered in October last year, which eventually led to a partial shutdown of the White House email system. The New York Times reported, “The hackers, who also got deeply into the State Department’s unclassified system, do not appear to have penetrated closely guarded servers that control the message traffic from Mr Obama’s BlackBerry, which he or an aide carries constantly.” Certainly this is scary, and hopefully the information gained by the hackers will not be used for nefarious purposes if possible.

Minecraft Players Can Now Choose To Play As A Girl

minecraft-new-alex-skin-pack

Minecraft is a very popular game that’s played by millions of people from all around the world, men and women alike. Whenever a player fires up the game for the first time they’re given the option to play as Steve, commonly referred to as the “Minecraft Guy,” the blocky blue-shirted character is doubtedly the most famous minecrafter in the world. However “jolly old Steve doesn’t really represent the diversity of our playerbase,” says Mojang, which is why Minecraft players will now also be given the option to play as a girl if they want.

This is why all Minecraft players will be given the opportunity to play with an Alex skin instead. Alex has “thinner arms, redder hair and a ponytail,” according to Mojang’s description.

Alex was actually introduced last year in Minecraft for PC but back then this skin was randomly assigned. Players didn’t have a choice if they wanted to play as a boy or a girl.

Starting this Wednesday, Minecraft players on all consoles will get the Alex skin for free. Alex will have eight different skins but won’t change the gameplay one bit, Mojang says she plays exactly the same as Steve does.

Mojang also announced today that the Simpsons skin pack is coming to Minecraft players on PlayStation consoles. This skin pack is already available on Xbox consoles.

Apple Watch Shatters When Dropped, Impact Resistant Much?

apple-watchimpactI am quite sure that the dust has more or less settled concerning the highly sought after Apple Watch, and it looks as though there has been no shortage of torture tests for the Apple Watch, be it in the kitchen or done in a scientific manner. Well, it seems that the $349 Apple Watch Sport edition that comes with an Ion-X glass screen is not going to amount to much, taking into consideration how its ‘durable’ screen actually shattered when the watch’s face hit the ground first.

Do bear in mind that any kind of screen damage is not covered where free repairs are concerned for the warranty that deals with the Apple Watch. At least the waterproof claims do live up with what Apple has mentioned, as the timepiece managed to work just as well despite being submerged 15 minutes in a swimming pool.

In the drop test, the results were disappointing to say the least, especially when you consider how the Apple Watch was dropped from a height of a mere four feet – less than that, actually. So much for Apple’s claim that this timepiece with its Ion-X glass display is ‘protected by a lightweight aluminosilicate glass that’s especially resistant to scratches and impact.’
