Pluto no longer just “a point of light”

NASA’s New Horizons probe is headed towards the most controversial of our planetary siblings, and this week they’ve shown some of the closest images we’ve ever bore witness to in the history of humanity. Samsung outs Level On wireless headphones for untethered listening

I took Samsung’s Level line of “premium” audio gear for a spin last summer, and now the company is adding another wireless model to the set. The Level On Wireless is exactly what the name suggests: a wireless version of the on-ear headphones in the c…

These surrealist games melt more than clocks

Some say surrealism was the most influential art movement of the past century and, perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s had an effect on video game developers too. The games you’ll find below weren’t made by Salvador Dalí or M.C. Escher, but the influence th…

X-Files Pop Vinyl Figures: I Want to Buy

I started watching The X-Files again on Netflix recently and a few things jumped out at me I had forgotten. The first is clothing and hairstyles were terrible in the early ’90s. The second was I forgot how hot Scully is. I remember the Smoking Man being a bad guy later in the series, but I totally forgot how often he appeared in the first season.

If you are an X-Files fan, Funko has rolled out a line of vinyl figures for you to collect. The series includes Scully and Mulder, the Smoking Man, and a grey Alien.

You can pick any of the four characters for $9.99(USD) at ThinkGeek. My favorite bad guy was always the dude filled with the black goo, too bad they didn’t include him.

Micro Tug Robots Can Pull Objects 2,000 Times Their Own Weight

ClimbingTug Like the noble ant or the sassy-yet-lovable tugboat, Micro Tugs can pull more than their own weight. The robots, which come from Stanford’s Biomimetics and Dextrous Manipulation Lab, use a “controllable adhesive” plate that sticks to surfaces only when shear pressure is applied. In one case a 12 gram robot was able to pull objects 2,000 times its own weight. Read More

Phablets Are Eating Phones And Tablets

phabletserrywhere It’s been increasingly evident for years: smartphone users are digging bigger phones as they do more on screens, and spend less time talking on the phone. And there’s no sign of the appetite for supersizing mobile handsets abating — not according to a new report from Yahoo-owned mobile analytics firm Flurry. Read More

Android 5.1 For HTC One M8 May Not Arrive Until August

htc-one-review-m8-labshot-12

HTC and Motorola are considered to be among the very few OEMs that are quick to release major new software updates at least for their high-end handsets. The HTC One M8 is just over a year old now but it still fits in that category despite the fact that the One M9 has been out for a couple of months now. It appears though that Android 5.1 for HTC One M8 might not be released before August 2015.

It’s unclear why HTC will be so uncharacteristically slow in releasing this update for last year’s flagship smartphone, but the word comes from HTC UK’s official Twitter account. It merits mentioning here that Android 5.1 has already been released for One M8 Google Play Edition.

The account was asked about the Android 5.1 update and received a reply which revealed that Android 5.1 with Sense 7.0 UI is not going to arrive on the HTC One M8 until August 2015.

Moreover it was also revealed that nothing has been confirmed as yet with regards to the HTC One M7. That particular device is well over two years old so it really won’t be surprising if it’s not updated to Android 5.1, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

The possibility exists though that HTC might change its mind and bring the release timeframe forward, but all we can do about that right now is keep our fingers crossed.

amazon-instant-video-ios

Amazon customers who subscribe to the $99 per year Prime program also get access to the company’s online video streaming service called Amazon Instant Video. It offers a huge collection of TV shows and movies aside from the original content produced by Amazon Studios. Instant Video can be accessed from a variety of platforms however the iOS app has lacked one important feature since the day it came out: HD streaming. The app has finally been updated to support high-definition streaming.

It may be hard for some people to fathom that in this day and age how an online video streaming service doesn’t offer streaming in HD on iOS, which is among the top two most popular mobile platforms in the world.

Version 3.0 of the Amazon Instant Video for iOS has been released which lets users stream TV shows and movies in high-definition, previously all the app could manage was streaming in standard-definition.

This update also allows users to stream content over their cellular connection, previously the app simply won’t stream content unless the device was connected to a Wi-Fi network first.

Those who will stream data over their cellular connection should keep in mind just how fast HD streaming can guzzle data, so they should be very mindful about data consumption to avoid any bill shocks.

Amazon Instant Video for iOS is a free download from the App Store.

Mayweather Vs Pacquiao Live Stream Sites Under Trouble

mayweather-vs-pacquiao

On May 2nd at the MGM in Las Vegas a bout that many have waited years for is finally going to take place, no wonder the Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight is being hailed as the “Fight of the Century.” There’s a ridiculous amount of money involved in this one boxing match but the anticipation has been so high that fans aren’t going to think twice before paying $100 for pay per view access. You might find it hard to access Mayweather vs Pacquiao live stream sites if you want to watch for free because the crackdown has already begun.

HBO and Showtime along with the promoters of the fight have started to sue websites that were offering Mayweather vs Pacquiao live stream, illegally obviously but when has that ever stopped people?

In fact this one fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao is expected to one of the most pirated TV events in history.

Lawsuits have already been filed against websites like boxinghd.net and sportship.org which have already been advertising free access to the fight. The court has been moved to seek a preliminary injunction so that internet providers block both URLs from 8:45 p.m. on May 2nd to 6 a.m. on May 3rd.

Given the sheer viewership demand for this fight it’s obvious that these aren’t just the two websites that will try to offer free streaming, there will certainly be others, and with just a couple of days to go its unlikely that HBO, Showtime and the promoters will be able to score an injunction against all of them.
