Old Folks React To Mortal Kombat X’s Fatalities

Just last month we posted an article which basically compiled most of the fatalities that gamers can expect from Mortal Kombat X. Given the improved graphics and the creative nature of the folks at NetherRealms, safe to say that these fatalities were particularly gruesome, making us cringe more than once during the video.

Now the folks at over at The Fine Bros. recently decided to see how the older generation would react to these fatalities. Given that for the most part, they did not have video games back in their day let alone any as violent as the Mortal Kombat franchise, so safe to say that this was something they might not have expected.

Most of them found it rather disgusting and expressed genuine disgust at the fatalities, but at the same time their reactions were still pretty funny. Some of them laughed but even those who did admitted that it was a little disturbing. One of them even felt that such graphic violence should be made illegal.

In fact Mortal Kombat’s gruesome fatalities over the years has proven to be rather controversial, but as the folks at NetherRealm recently said, there is actually a line that they would not cross. Exactly where that line is drawn is anyone’s guess based on what we’ve seen so far. In any case if you have a few minutes to spare, do check it out their reactions in the video above.

Samsung Pay Expected To Go Live In The US Second Half Of 2015

samsung-pay-02Samsung Pay was announced last month during MWC 2015. Unfortunately it seemed that while the feature was announced, it has yet to go live in any market and has yet to be made available for users. However the good news is that if you’re looking forward to the feature, you will be pleased to learn that it is expected to go live in the second half of 2015.

This is according to Samsung Electronics’ Managing Director, Park Jin-Young who revealed this during the company’s recent earnings report. According to Park, the feature will go live in the US and South Korea in the second half of the year, but as for other countries this is something that apparently Samsung is still discussing. As for smartwatch compatibility, kind of like how the Apple Watch can facilitate mobile payments, Samsung will reveal those details at a later date.

At the moment Apple Pay is still only available in the US. However there have been signs and rumors that Apple is planning to expand to markets like Europe, China, and Canada, but nothing has been officially announced yet. Assuming Samsung really does launch in both the US and South Korea in the second half of the year, they would have beaten Apple to the punch in at least one market.

Samsung Pay relies on NFC and MST technology developed by LoopPay. What this means is that essentially their feature will be compatible with nearly all of point-of-sale units in the US, so retail stores adopting the technology should be a relatively painless process.

HTC One M9 INK Campaign Announced

htc inkYesterday we reported that HTC had teased an upcoming collaboration with British model Jourdan Dunn. It was expected that they would be working together to create a limited edition HTC One M9 handset although at that time, we were wondering what it might look like. For collectors out there, turns out this collaboration is part of HTC’s INK campaign.

Basically this will see HTC collaborate with more celebrities besides Jourdan Dunn and work towards creating limited edition devices featuring artwork inspired by tattoos, or otherwise known as ink. The first design is the one that you can see in the image above which was created with tattoo artist Cally Jo Pothecary, who has tattooed celebrities such as Rihanna.

According to the description of the design chosen by Dunn, “As she takes on more creative projects that express her individual style and personality, the hand and eye symbolise the need for protection and strength, combined with positive energy. The natural leaf-elements and patterns around the outside of each visual reflect her creative growth, whilst the sun and moon together indicate balance and harmony in her character.”

The release date and exactly how many models will be made remains unknown at this point in time, but we’ll be keeping an eye out for additional details and designs in the future. In the meantime any tattoo fans out there excited by this collaboration?

Guy Pours Molten Aluminum Into Watermelon, Unintentionally Makes Art

If you poured molten aluminum into a watermelon, what would happen?

You’d create art, apparently.

That’s what transpired when YouTube’s “The Backyard Scientist” attempted the unlikely experiment.

In the video above, watch as the Scientist heats up some aluminum, before pouring it into the hollowed-out fruit.

molten-aluminum-watermelon

He said he expected the watermelon to explode, but something surprising occurred.

molten-aluminum-watermelon

“What happened is the aluminum found little channels throughout the watermelon that connected the seed chambers to each other, and this caused this awesome casting to happen,” the YouTuber said in the clip, adding that the result was “totally unintentional.”

The watermelon experiment is reminiscent of a 2013 viral video which showed an artist creating intricate castings by pouring molten aluminum into fire ant hills.

Needless to say, we don’t recommend trying either of these red-hot experiments at home.

5 New San Fransisco Restaurants You Just Have to Try

Hey, foodie friends. April has been another banner month for restaurants. Check out our picks for the 5 most reservation-worthy spots.

Octavia
Melissa Perello’s follow-up to Castro restaurant Frances (where it has been hard to score a reservation for six years straight) is finally here. Seasonal, daily-changing dishes–grilled asparagus with caramelized shallots, squid-ink noodles with green garlic–showcase her talent with California cuisine. Location.

Aster
This cozy spot from the owners of Alta and Plum Bar is one of the first places in SF to nix tipping (gratuity is built into the bill). Chef Brett Cooper (of Outerlands fame) is whipping up inventive West Coast fare, including dishes like asparagus with sorrel, pickled spring onion and egg. Location.

Aatxe
The latest concept by Ne Timeas Restaurant Group (Flour + Water, Salumeria and Central Kitchen) has opened in the old Swedish American Hall space on Market Street. Aatxe (say it with us: aah-CHAY) brings us tapas–like the pintxo (snack) flight; octopus with kohlrabi, avocado and salsa verde, and mussels escabeche–from the Basque region of Spain. Bonus: The Bon Vivants (Trick Dog) are slinging cocktails behind the bar. Location.

Ichi Kakiya
Ichi, one of SF’s most beloved sushi restaurants, is now shucking oysters at its brand-new raw bar across the street. Go for happy hour (5:30 to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday) and see how many $1 oysters you can slurp down. Location.

Reverb Kitchen & Bar
Verbena, the upscale, vegetarian-heavy restaurant in Russian Hill, has repositioned itself as more casual…and more meat-friendly. For brunch, go for the carrot-cake pancakes with cream cheese and ricotta stuffing and carrot-maple butter. For dinner, you can’t go wrong with collards and crispy pork ribs. Location.

Kristen Wiig Is Daenerys Targaryen On 'The Tonight Show' With Jimmy Fallon

It’s entirely possible that Kristen Wiig doesn’t know a thing about “Game of Thrones,” but that didn’t stop her from appearing as Daenerys Targaryen on Wednesday’s “Tonight Show.”

In full costume and with a tiny dragon named Carl on her shoulder, Wiig answered questions about her life as the Mother of Dragons for host Jimmy Fallon as they both giggled their way through the interview.

She told Fallon that her real name is Karen and that she lives in a dome in a forest on a mountain.

The “Khaleesi” gave him the scoop on her favorite food and hobbies, and let it slip that she’s a big fan of Kristen Wiig — saying that her film that opens Friday, “Welcome of Me,” sounds like it has “a great premise.”

Wiig has a habit of appearing on Fallon as seemingly random people who are definitely not Kristen Wiig. Last year, she masqueraded as Harry Styles of One Direction on “Tonight Show.” And in 2013, she appeared as Michael Jordan when Fallon was host of “Late Night.”

In each case, he got her to sing an improvised song… and he did so again on Wednesday night.

Check it out in the clip above.
