2015-04-30 3 UofM 3d printThis isn’t the first time we’ve seen printed bio-materials find a place in the medical sphere. Last month a bio-printer created an implantable nose made from 3D-printed cartilage. In this case, a team of researchers from the University of Michigan created tracheal splints from 3D-printed bio-material that can be inserted into a child’s windpipe to treat tracheobronchomalacia, a condition that … Continue reading

Daniel Lanois: Advice to the Young

“Should one be so lucky to find something they are good at, then pursue it with full passion, man.” Spot-on advice from one of the world’s most sought-after producers Daniel Lanois, who forwards wisdom from the legendary Brian Eno.

To be “a master of a few things” seems to be a key element in Daniel Lanois’ musical landscape. When he worked with Brian Eno in the 1980s they sought to become experts at a few specific things, and their field of expertise soon came to be the boxes in which they created their characteristic ambient soundscapes. This strong and early sense of direction is what he considers the foundation for his success as one of the greatest music producers of our time: “I find people wait too long to get into things.”

Daniel Lanois (b. 1951) is a legendary Canadian music producer, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter. He has received three Grammy Awards for Album of the Year as well as several nominations. Among the albums he has produced are U2’s ‘The Joshua Tree’, Bob Dylan’s ‘Time Out of Mind’ and Peter Gabriel’s ‘So’. As a musician he has invented the legendary ‘ambient records’ such as ‘The Plateaux of Mirror’, ‘Apollo’, ‘On Land’ and ‘The Pearl’ in collaboration with Brian Eno.

Daniel Lanois was interviewed by Kasper Bech Dyg at Musikhuset Posten in Odense, Denmark in April 2015.

'Please Don't Be Mad, I Don't Have Much': Homeless Person Donates 18 Cents To North Carolina Church

An envelope with 18 cents inside was left as an offering at a Charlotte, North Carolina, church last Sunday. It may not sound like much, but church members say they were deeply moved by the “powerful” gift.

“Please don’t be mad, I don’t have much,” someone penned on the outside of the envelope, left in a collection plate at First United Methodist Church. “I’m homeless. God Bless.”

According to WCNC, First United Methodist Church is located in uptown Charlotte, nestled between a “homeless shelter in one direction [and] the big banks in the other.” Every Sunday, the church offers breakfast to about 150 homeless individuals as part of their “Muffin Ministry.”

“You’re literally right in between two very different worlds,” Reverend Patrick Hamrick told the news outlet. “We are, and we see that. Sunday mornings we welcome a big crowd of people to come have breakfast with us, some of them are coming from shelters.”

Hamrick said that he and members of his congregation were very moved by the person’s offering.

“It’s touching that one of our homeless neighbors responded by giving back,” he told WBTV. “We weren’t ‘mad,’ we were very touched by this.”

For the individual, the money “could have been everything in his or her pocket,” said the reverend, per Fox 5 Atlanta.

It’s unknown who left the envelope, but Hamrick said that the individual’s generous spirit has certainly been noticed by the church.

“It took some bravery I think to write that down … And for us, we acknowledge that individual gave out of his poverty proportionally a big deal,” he told WCNC. “We want to honor the dignity of the individual who made this gift. But if that individual would step up it would be amazing because I have a feeling, there’s been enough groundswell of support that this person could probably get some additional assistance. So I think there could be a happy ending to this.”

This week, the story of the 18 cent donation has gone viral, as netizens praise the person’s selflessness.

This “anonymous donor with so little to give [is] giving all of us an important lesson,” WCNC wrote.

Nepal Earthquake: Rescuers Pull Teen Survivor From Rubble 5 Days After Temblor

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Crowds cheered Thursday as a teenage boy was pulled, dazed and dusty, from the wreckage of a seven-story Kathmandu building that collapsed around him five days ago when an enormous earthquake shook Nepal.

Pemba Tamang was carried out on a stretcher, his face was covered in dust. Medics had put an IV drip into his arm and a blue brace had been placed around his neck. He appeared stunned, and his eyes blinked in the sunlight.

Nepalese rescuers, with support from an American disaster response team, had been working for hours to free Tamang, who police said was 18 years old.

L.B. Basnet, the police officer who crawled into a gap in the rubble to reach Tamang, said he was surprisingly responsive.

“He thanked me when I first approached him,” said Basnet. “He told me his name, his address, and I gave him some water. I assured him we were near to him.”

Rescuers eventually used jacks to lift the concrete slabs that had wedged him in, said Basnet.

An American disaster response team had been helping the Nepalese.

“He’s not too far down, but the floors have collapsed and he’d pancaked between them,” Andrew Olvera, an urban search and rescue member with the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Disaster Assistance Response Team, said shortly before the boy was freed.

Twisted ropes of steel reinforcing rods were all that stopped huge concrete slabs from falling onto the scene. Two concrete floors hung down in front of the building like curtains.

“The whole operation is dangerous,” Olvera said. “But it’s risk versus gain. To save a human life, we’ll risk almost anything.”

The rescue was a rare bit of good news in a city that has known little but despair since the earthquake hit Saturday, leaving more than 5,500 people dead across this poverty-wracked Himalayan nation.

Asked how Tamang had lasted for so many days, Basnet replied: “He survived by good faith.”
