These "Swamp Dogs" Might Be What America's First Dogs Looked Like

These animals are officially called “Carolina Dogs.” A less poetic name would be “Carolina Swamp Dogs,” since until 1970s, the Carolina swamp is pretty much where they lived. Early tests of their DNA show that they might be what the first dogs in America looked like.

How To Start Windows Safe Mode (XP, Win 7, Win 8)

For Troubleshooting problems, Windows Safe mode is quite essential. Although, most of the problems can easily be solved in normal mode, but still there are some sticky ones that won’t go away that easily.

In safe mode, minimum programs and drivers are started, which makes it easier to access your system without any bad programs getting in your way (in most cases).

To boot Windows Safe mode, the process is quite simple. You can access safe mode by two methods. If you have access to normal Windows, then you can access safe mode from inside by configuring settings or you can start safe mode when the computer starts by pressing F8 key when it starts. If your computer doesn’t shut down properly, then you will also be provided an option to start in safe mode, however, doing this on purpose is not recommended.

The Below mentioned methods work on Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Method #1: Start Windows Safe Mode When Windows Boot

You can easily access Windows safe mode when the PC starts. All you have to do is rapidly press F8 key (generally, it is present at the top row of the keyboard) when the PC starts booting.

Note: Before trying this, make sure all Removable disks are removed, such as, CDs, Floppy disks, and USB drives. This will make sure none of these attempt to boot the PC.

If your PC is turned off, then press the power button to turn it on and if it is on already, then restart it. As soon as the PC starts booting, press F8 rapidly until you see the screen where “Safe Mode” option is provided. If you see the Windows Splash screen instead, then you didn’t do it right and restart the PC again to try again.

Note: Pressing F8 “Rapidly” is not compulsory, you can also press it just once and the Safe Mode screen should arrive (if you press at the right time). However, pressing more than once doesn’t hurt also, and it provides more accuracy and surety that you will reach the “Safe Mode” screen. Furthermore, it might not work sometimes on Windows 8 PCs, as they are generally quite fast and boot too fast to receive the command.

Once you will reach the “Safe Mode” screen, you will see three different options for Safe Mode, which are “Safe Mode”, “Safe Mode with Networking” and “Safe Mode with Command  Prompt”.

safe mode

Safe Mode

This is the normal safe mode that will boot your Windows with minimum required drivers. It should be your first option if you would like to troubleshoot any issue.

Safe Mode with Networking

This mode comes with all the settings of the standard Safe mode, however, this will also allow you to connect to the internet. If you want to troubleshoot something more advanced and require internet access, then this mode should be your choice.

Safe Mode with Command Prompt

This is also same as standard Safe mode, but open Command Prompt when you boot. If you would like to use the Command Prompt to solve any issue, then you should go for this.

Navigate with Up and Down arrow keys to change between modes and hit enter on the required mode to start it. All the required files will start loading and you will be able to see them as well.

Once you have solved the issue or would like to access normal Windows again, just restart and don’t press F8 this time and you should access normal Windows.

Here is a video as well, showing how to boot in safe mode:

Methods #2: Start Windows Safe mode From Inside

If you have access to your normal Windows then you can start your Windows in safe mode from inside the settings.

Press Windows+R and “Run” window will open (you can also access “Run” from the Start menu). There Type “msconfig” and click on “OK”.

Run

“System Configuration” window will open, in there, click on “Boot” tab. For Windows XP, you need to click on “BOOT.INI”

system

Under “Boot” tab, you will see the option of “Safe Boot”, check the checkbox next to it. Under “Safe Boot” option you have the options to select what kind of Safe mode you want, just like in the above mentioned process. Select the required option and click on “OK”.

confirm

Now, whenever you will restart, your Windows will start in Safe Mode of your selection.

However, this option is permanent and will always start the Windows in Safe Mode. If you would like to start the Windows in normal mode, then you will have to go through the same process mentioned above and uncheck “Safe Boot”. “System Configuration” opens in the Safe mode as well, so going through the above mentioned process should not be a problem.

Startup Provides Free Lodging To Women Studying Computer Science

tune houseAs if the cost of studying wasn’t high enough, there are other expenses that one has to pay such as food, bills, books, entertainment, and let’s not forget rent. Sometimes rent can be the second biggest expense which is why in a bid to encourage more women to pick up computer science as an area of study, a mobile marketing analytics startup by the name of Tune is providing free accommodation to women who have chosen computer science as their field of study.

This will no doubt help women interested in computer science but might not have the necessary funds to do so, so by alleviating monetary concerns such as rent, Tune hopes that it will encourage more women to enter the field. At the moment this “offer” is only extended to those attending the University of Washington, and right now the home that Tune is renting has only 8 bedrooms, meaning that there are only so many spots available for interested candidates.

Tune will also be covering costs such as groceries and will also provide students a MacBook each for the entire school year starting September 20th 2015 through till June 30th 2015. Speaking to GeekWire, Tune’s CEO Peter Hamilton said, “It’s clear that our company’s development and momentum is directly correlated to the strength of the Seattle community and the amazing talent that has been flourishing here. With that in mind, we want to be innovative with how we support and engage the community.”

For women who are interested in applying for Tune’s offer, you can hit up its website for the details. It won’t be an easy process as applicants will be judged based on their short essays, as well as “their demonstrated passion for technology on and off campus.”

Apple Watch Components Reportedly Cost $81.20

apple watch teardownApple is charging a premium for its smartwatch at $350 for the base model, making it significantly higher than other smartwatches in the market today, but why is that? Could it be that the Apple Watch components cost more which is why Apple needs to charge more just so they can turn a profit?

Maybe not because according to a report from IHS Technology (via VentureBeat), it turns out that the Apple Watch’s components cost a total of $81.20. Throwing in an extra $2.50 for manufacturing costs, it brings the total to $83.70. According to IHS, this makes the Apple Watch have the highest markup amongst Apple’s products so far.

The most expensive component according to them is the display which costs $20.50 for the Ion-X version. No word on how much the sapphire or Edition bodies cost. That being said how accurate IHS’ estimates is unclear. A few days ago, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook addressed reports of cost breakdowns, claiming that so far none of the breakdowns he’s seen about any of their products is close to what the reality is.

We suppose it is entirely plausible given that Apple might get cheaper components because of the amount of orders they place. There are also other factors to take into consideration, such as the hours put into manufacturing the product in which salaries needs to be paid. There is also the process of designing the product, testing it, and also marketing it, all of which have costs that need to be factored into the final price as well.

Samsung Acknowledges RAM Management Bug On Galaxy S6

samsung-galaxy-s6_013A report from a couple of days ago revealed that both the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge were having some RAM management problems which is odd especially when you consider the phone has an abundance of it. However the issue was the Samsung’s software was too aggressive in managing the RAM, going as far as shutting them down automatically even when the user just wants them to run in the background.

The good news is that Samsung Mobile UK appears to have acknowledged the problem and has posted on its Facebook page that they are working on a series of micro-updates to the handset that will supposedly help deal with the problem. According to the Samsung Mobile UK’s social media rep, “Micro-updates are in the process of being rolled out to correct issues relating to device performance and stability Johan!, Keep checking for these on your device via Settings>About device>Software update>Update now.”

It is unclear if these micro-updates will address the problem, but basically what it needs to do is stop being so aggressive in managing the RAM of the handset. We get what Samsung is trying to do but perhaps they’re a tad overzealous in the process, either that or the feature isn’t configured well to understand which app needs shutting down and which don’t. In the meantime have any Galaxy S6/S6 Edge owners received an update that addresses the problem?

LG G4c Rumored To Be Smaller Version Of The LG G4

lg_g4cThe LG G4 was announced a couple of days ago, but if the rumors are to be believed, the company could be working on a smaller version called the LG G4c. That being said these rumors aren’t completely unfounded. Recently companies such as Samsung and LG have displayed the tendency to release flagship phones followed by smaller version of those phones.

So for LG to launch a smaller version of the LG G4 is not such a stretch. That being said, speculation of the smaller LG G4 came about when it was spotted that a Dutch retailer listed a device called the LG G4c with the model number being LG-H525N. Interestingly enough the retailer also listed its release date for the 12th of May which is a bit soon and also has us wondering why wouldn’t LG have announced it alongside the LG G4?

Unfortunately not much is known about this alleged smaller LG G4 so take it with a grain of salt for now. However based on previous releases in the past, the smaller version of flagship phones tend to pack less powerful specs. They are still decent phones but if you wanted all the bells and whistles, the flagship is still the way to go, but if you were after something smaller, more compact, and cheaper than we suppose this could be a good alternative as the Dutch retailer has priced it around the $330 mark.

Like we said you should probably take it with a grain of salt but we’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more information, so if a smaller LG G4 sounds ideal to you, check back with us in the coming weeks for the details!

ACLU Launches App To Securely Record Law Enforcement Encounters

In the past few months, there seems to be an increase in reports and video footage of police using excessive force especially when it is uncalled for, and especially in situations that might not warrant it. As such many have turned to recording law enforcement encounters as a means to provide evidence of such events taking place.

Now for those who are unsure as to whether or not the police used excessive force, the ACLU has recently launched the Mobile Justice CA app for both iOS and Android in which users can use to record footage and create incident reports, after which it will be sent to an ACLU affiliate to be reviewed and to determine if there is any misconduct.

What makes this app special is that the footage will be uploaded to the ACLU meaning that if the police were to grab your mobile device and confiscate it or break it, it wouldn’t matter as the video is stored somewhere else. There are even checklists in the app to help the person filming the video determine if maybe the police officer was being unnecessarily rude or threatening, such as pulling out a gun, nightstick, taser, and etc.

Now the ACLU is not the first to have launched such an app. ACLU chapters in Oregon and New York have released similar apps, but this particular version is aimed at California residents. Those interested in downloading it can head on over to the iTunes App Store or Google Play for the download.
