There are several telepresence robots on the market today that are typically nothing more than an iPad mounted on a remote control base that can be driven around. The DORA (Dexterous Observational Roving Automaton) is designed to make the operator feel like he or she is actually at the remote location. DORA was created by robotics researchers from the University … Continue reading
As fancy, reversible, and multipurpose as the new Type-C USB ports may be, they are not backwards compatible with any of the existing accessories and flash drives in the market. At least not without an adapter. But with Apple’s new MacBook and Google’s new Chromebook Pixel solidly behind the new standard, it will only be a matter of time before … Continue reading
Uber’s already got a taxi and a courier business, so it makes perfect sense that it’d want to muscle in on UPS’ turf. TechCrunch has uncovered documents revealing that the outfit is currently testing a system where high-end retailers can use Uber veh…
I would like to think that the USB standard has certainly advanced and moved to a point where I did not expect it to be, in a manner where the USB 3.0 standard is now able to deliver extremely fast data transfer speeds as opposed to the days of yore, although it remains to be seen just what else the future will hold. Well, here is a Kickstarter project that is well on its way to be realized. Surely the InfiniteUSB looks set to be a hit when it finally rolls off the manufacturing line and is packaged for the masses.
The InfiniteUSB will basically enable your slew of portable devices such as smartphones, tablets, and other compatible gadgets to remain connected to your desktop or notebook, ushering in an era of elegance to the desk. In addition, the InfiniteUSB-C will also be made available, where it will be your new MacBook 12″ or Chromebook Pixel’s best friend as it solves the USB port limitation issue due to the USB Type-C port.
After all, the InfiniteUSB-C will be in accordance with the elegant iF-awarded design of InfiniteUSB, where the latter is an open chain of USB ports, in other words, you will be able to enjoy a virtually unlimited supply of open slots, now how about that? Imagine having infinite USB ports, now that is a dream come true.

When we think of action cameras, chances are we think of GoPros. These devices are small, rugged, and take some pretty impressive action videos. Granted it probably won’t be used to shoot epic Hollywood movies, but for what it does, it does it really well. However could GoPro be thinking of branching out?
According to a recent announcement from the company, they have revealed that they have recently acquired French company Kolor. For those unfamiliar, Kolor is a company that specializes in creating virtual reality software. Through their software, users will be able to stitch multiple photos and videos to create a 360-degree panorama which in turn offers a virtual reality-like experience.
GoPro’s CEO Nick Woodman had this to say about the company’s recent acquisition. “We see that incredible opportunity for GoPro to be at the forefront of the virtual reality movement. Given that GoPro is already the most widely used capture device for capturing life experiences in an immersive manner, it’s only natural that we have a seat at the table moving forward.”
The company plans on eventually allowing users to create 360-degree videos in an easier manner, but apart from that we’re not sure if GoPro will end up being a company that helps create virtual reality photos and videos, or if they might eventually dive into making hardware as well. In the meantime GoPro has shown off what Kolor’s software can do in the video above.

Many are probably aware that Intel has attempted to break into the mobile market by launching mobile chipsets of their own. However when it comes to OEMs adopting their technology, there aren’t that many. In fact ASUS is probably one of the companies who has been supporting Intel’s efforts these years.
However it looks like that could soon change. In an interview with ASUS CEO Jerry Shen, he revealed that the company could be thinking of turning to Qualcomm’s chipsets in the future. Now for Intel fans you can rest assured that ASUS will not be abandoning Intel’s chipsets entirely. Instead it has been suggested that maybe Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 615 chipsets might be used for the company’s mid-range devices.
As for their use of Intel’s products, this will be limited to the company’s flagship smartphones which we suppose is just as good, While we can only speculate, Shen’s answers seem to hint that the ZenFone 3 could continue to use Intel’s offerings. Of course there’s no guarantee as who knows, perhaps Qualcomm’s offerings might prove to be better than Intel and ASUS could shift their entire lineup to Qualcomm’s chipsets.
Or Qualcomm’s processors might not be efficient or cheap enough for the company and we could see ASUS move back to Intel entirely, but either way what do you guys think? Are you the type that really cares about who makes the chipset in your phone? Or are you happy as long as the phone does what it’s supposed to do?

The Chinese market is no joke. Ask Apple where they saw sales in country overtake those in Europe, which is why it does not come as a surprise to learn that Cyanogen is planning on working with more Chinese vendors in the future to help get their platform out there. Previously we had seen the company partner up with the likes of Oppo and OnePlus, and recently they have branched into India with the Yu Yureka.
Speaking at the Global Mobile Internet Conference, Cyanogen’s CEO Kirt McMaster believes that by partnering with Chinese phone vendors, they will be helping these vendors build an identity for themselves outside the country which is true. For the most part, most Chinese companies are relatively unknown outside of their country or the Asian region.
When speaking about companies like OnePlus, it seems like there is no love lost between the two. According to McMaster, “Without Cyanogen, OnePlus would have sold like one device in international markets. Essentially they built their brand on the back of Cyanogen.” He later adds, “OnePlus shipped reasonable volume, but nothing compared to what some of these other partners can ship. So we are working with partners that can scale much quicker.”
Steve Kondik, the company’s CTO on the other hand was a bit more diplomatic. According to Kondik, “That’s probably the last you will see from that partnership unfortunately. Two new companies are trying to do crazy stuff, a lot of people collide.” It is unclear as to which other companies Cyanogen will be partnering with, but we’ll keep an eye out it.

Everything communicates – everything a new leader says and does and doesn’t say and doesn’t do. Most new leaders get that. But many miss the unintended consequences of what they do and say and don’t do and don’t say on people they think are not directly affected.
The lesson is that everyone is watching and everyone has the same question, “What does this mean for me?” In the absence of receiving a clear message directed to them, they’ll imagine the worst.
Here’s what a surgical nurse anesthetist said about the start up of a new head of finance at his medical center. Pay attention to the stress caused by what happened to his colleagues even though he was “safe” himself. Imagine how the people at risk felt and feel.
Tell me about the new leader’s predecessor?
Very personable. After a single meeting he would remember your name and call you by name in the hallways and cafeteria.
He did end up retiring. Maybe he wasn’t prepared to make the difficult decisions to make the medical center strong – particularly with the changes in healthcare.
How did you feel about the new head of finance?
Nervous. I knew his work history. That was shared. He was coming to us from somewhere else. He wasn’t from there. He obviously went there to do a job. And he’d been there for a few years. His work history before that was similar – at least as people talked about him. So I got the perception that he was probably a hatchet man.
And you were nervous because….?
Because obviously he was brought into our hospital for the same job. (I had the least seniority in our group). So if they were going to make cuts, it would probably be me.
But even if it wasn’t me, seven of us cover 24/7 with five people during the day. The breakdown means way beyond 40 hours each. So my concern is that even if I survived the cuts, would I want to work here? It was a quality of life issue.
When they were looking at our group, I told him that I was neither interested in losing my job nor in working more shifts if they chose someone else.
Before I worked at this hospital I worked at a metro hospital. I’d been there a year. And they went through hard financial times and I was one of the ones cut because they cut by seniority. So it was a real concern.
How did it play out?
It’s currently playing out.
He has made changes that has affected the regular nurses more than surgery and mainly left us alone. But they have closed nursing stations and merged nursing stations. They’ve laid off nurses. They had nurses rebid their jobs. Now they are re-negotiating the contract. Once the contract is open they can change anything.
The rebidding of jobs is a really big deal. They did it by seniority. By turn you had 20 minutes to choose a new job – not necessarily your old job.
The Operating Room and Emergency Room were safe because of the required training. But it still caused a lot of conflict.
Do you feel safe now?
I actually do. We are staff for the medical center. They cut the anesthesiologist and outsourced anesthesiology to a group. I was concerned that they were going to cut us or make us form a group and do our own billing with our own financial risk. Nurse anesthetists have a harder time being financially viable.
But for now, the new group has been there six months. They’ve been great to work with. They cannot do it with less than seven of us. Brought the new group in for their business mindedness. They’re only there during peak hours. We support them and are the cheaper option for off-hours. So it works.

“Freddie Gray will never be back. Those windows will,” said DeRay McKesson, during an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Tuesday.
McKesson, an activist best known for his efforts in Ferguson, Missouri, during protests of the police killing of teenager Michael Brown, refused to condemn Baltimore protesters who turned to violence on Monday — even after Blitzer noted at least 15 injured police officers, 200 arrests and 44 vehicles set ablaze.
“There’s no excuse for that kind of violence right?” Blitzer asked McKesson, who then promptly responded:
“Yeah, and there’s no excuse for the seven people the Baltimore City Police Department has killed in the past year either, right?”
Blitzer then invoked the peaceful ways of Martin Luther King Jr. — who was arrested on multiple occasions for getting rowdy with law enforcement while protesting.
“I don’t have to condone it to understand it, right?” McKesson said. “The pain that people feel is real. And you are making a comparison. You are suggesting this idea that broken windows are worse than broken spines, right? And what we know to be true is that the police are killing people everywhere. They’re killing people here.”
Blitzer continued vainly trying to get McKesson to condemn the violent protesters.
“The violence that the police have been inflicting on communities of color has been sustained and deep … I think that the unrest, the uprising, whatever you call it is, again, a cry for justice here and a cry for justice across the country because the police continue to terrorize people — and the terrorizing is actually deadly,” McKesson said.
