Mint Tells You if Your Breath Stinks or If You Need a Drink

My wife often says I have bad breath. I think she’s is a bit hypersensitive on the issue, but it’s her nose. Luckily, soon there will be a tool available so that I can test my level of halitosis and either start brushing more often or prove that my wife’s odor-sniffing abilities are too finely tuned.

A new crowdfunding effort from Breathometer, who also produced a breath-based blood alcohol monitor in 2013, is called Mint. It not only tells you the quality of your breath, but also it lets you know how hydrated you are (often times the two are linked). To use it, turn on the palm-sized device, pair it with a companion app on your phone, and then clamp down on the front and let the tool’s tiny motor suck air into its sensor. In about five seconds, the app on your phone shows you the results – it gives your breath a score of one out of five mint leaves and tells you how hydrated you are. Mint should be available by August and a pledge of $99(USD) will get you one when it’s released.

Until August I am still going to have to go old school and breathe into my cupped hand and sniff it. But once I get my Mint, I’ll be scientifically sure whether or not people are offering me mints out of courtesy or because I really need them.

Grand Theft Auto 5 Has Sold 5m Boxed Copies In The UK

gtav_details09122014_015Games these days can be bought either digitally, or for those who are a bit more old school or who like collecting, games can also be bought in their physical form where it comes with the game’s manual, extra artwork, and a DVD installation disc. That being said we know Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 5 is a popular game, but how popular are we talking about?

According to the latest market data released by GfK Chart-Track, it seems that the boxed copy version of Grand Theft Auto 5 has actually sold a whopping 5 million copies in the UK. It should be noted that these figures are for the physical copy of the game, so we’re not talking about a combined figure, but rather the figure from one channel alone which is why we are pretty impressed.

The impressive figures of the game aren’t a complete surprise. Back in 2013 when the game was first launched, it was estimated that Rockstar managed to pull in $1 billion in revenue in three days. Analysts have also predicted that the game sold 15 million copies within its first week of availability, with the game topping the UK’s list as the best selling game ever.

We can only imagine that the recent release for newer consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One have helped its sales, not to forget the release on the PC which is something that PC gamers have been asking for for the past couple of years.

Crysis Makes Its Return As A Board Game On Kickstarter

When gamers think of FPS games designed to push their gaming rigs to the limit, Crytek’s Crysis series of games comes to mind. While we’re not sure when the next Crysis will be released, the folks at Frame 6 have decided that maybe Crysis might be more fun played as a board game and have since launched a Kickstarter campaign for it.

The creators of the game are hoping €85,000 and so far have managed to raise a little over €24,000. With 25 days to go we’re not sure if they will be able to hit their goal. Now admittedly playing an FPS game in board game style is a bit odd, but according to the game’s description, “Crysis Analogue Edition brings the award-winning shooter to your table as a fast-paced strategy game. Play with up to eight friends and score points in either Team Instant Action or Capture the Relay game modes. Defeat your enemies using advanced weaponry and the unique abilities provided by the Nanosuit in this team-based tactical game.”

The game will come with miniatures and sets to help make the game more visually appealing, and for collectors we guess this might be a rather appealing prospect as well. To be fair we have seen video games translated into board games, like Blizzard’s Diablo 2 remade into a Dungeons & Dragons board game, so why not Crysis, right?

We have no idea how well the game will play as a board game but we’ll admit that it does sound pretty intriguing. If you’d like to learn more or pledge your support, check out the video above and hit up the game’s Kickstarter page for the details.

LG Escape2 With Curved Display Quietly Listed By AT&T For $179.99

lg-t

AT&T has quietly initiated the sale of LG Escape2 (yes, there is no white space between Escape and 2) for a no-contract price of $179.99. The device has not seen any official launch and has been sent directly on the sale platform. In terms of design and specs, the Escape2 looks somewhat similar to the LG Spirit that was launched two months ago.

The Escape2 in every way is a mid-range device and it also has many similarities of the G3 than the G4. No, you will neither get genuine nor the faux leather in this one, it is crafted in plastic. It does bear LG’s hallmark traits such as curved design and in-cell display for slimmer panels.

Let’s talk about the hardware, the device features 4.7-inch of display with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels, and is powered by a 1.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 SoC. There is 2GB of RAM on-board, 8GB of expandable internal storage and 2,100 mAh battery. It sports an 8-megapixel rear camera along with a 1-megapixel (VGA) front camera. In terms of software, it runs Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box along with LG’s default features such as Knock Code and Gesture Shot. It also features the popular Glance View, which enables users to look at the notifications just by doing a half swipe.

So, this brings us to where we started, AT&T “silently” listing the device. We assume that the company wanted to avoid clashes with the soon approaching LG G4. Listing a major flagship neck-to-neck with a mid-ranger won’t be a smart move.

Moreover, AT&T is offering the LG Escape 2 for 99 cents with a two year contract. The AT&T Next payment options enable customers to buy the smartphone for $0 on 20 monthly payments of $9 each with AT&T Next for 12 months, 24 payments of $7.50 each for 18 months, or 30 monthly payments of $6 for 24 months.

The Heartbreaking Moment That Made Leah Remini Question Her Dedication To Scientology

For more than 30 years, actress Leah Remini was a devout member of the Church of Scientology, the controversial organization characterized as a religion and created by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard. Though some high-profile Scientologists made the decision to join the church during their adulthood, Remini had little choice in the matter, as she tells “Oprah: Where Are They Now?” in the above video.

“My mother was in Scientology my whole life. Most people don’t know that we were raised in it — I didn’t decide to get into it,” Remini clarifies. “I was brought into it by my mom.”

While many outside of Scientology have a basic awareness of some beliefs and practices of its members, Remini says that the true commitment required of Scientologists is far less known.

“I don’t think people know the amount of dedication it takes to be in this organization,” she says. “I mean, it was every day, three-and-a-half hours minimum, seven days a week.”

For a working mother like Remini, that type of commitment meant making a huge sacrifice to make room for Scientology in her life.

“I’m working most of my time, and then the other time was spent at the church,” she says. “So, minimal time is really spent with your family.”

The impact of this sacrifice was never more clear than during one particular moment with her daughter. Remini was reading Scientology coursework — part of the organization’s “betterment courses” — when she looked up and saw something that made her question the priorities she’d lived by for so long.

“I was on course one day. I was at one of these hotels in Florida, and I saw my daughter swimming for the first time, while I’m… reading this thing. A tear came down my face,” Remini says. “I was like, ‘What am I doing?’ The moment hit me that I was now doing the same thing to my daughter that my mother [had conveyed] to me, that what she was doing was more important.”

In July of 2013, Remini and her family made the extremely difficult decision to leave the Church of Scientology, a decision that she admits she still struggles with today.

“It’s not just something you get over. It’s people and a lifestyle you’ve known all your life,” she says. “It formed who I am, good and bad; it formed the way I think, good and bad. So, there’s a lot of pain connected to it… It’s still coming to me.”

Even a brief moment on the street can cause that pain and emotion to resurface. “I saw my goddaughter in the street and my instinct was to run to her. Her mom turned her back to me,” Remini says.

Now that a few years have passed since she disassociated from Scientology, the actress has been able to open her eyes to various perspectives beyond the teachings of the church.

“I’m learning there’s a new world out here,” she says. “There shouldn’t be any kind of judgment towards somebody who has a belief system that is not yours.”

More from the interview: Remini addresses her dismissal from “The Talk” and the “quite annoying” thing about interviewing certain celebrities.

“Oprah: Where Are They Now?” airs Saturdays at 10 p.m. ET on OWN.
