Taylor Swift Tops Maxim's 2015 Hot List

It doesn’t get any hotter than Taylor Swift, according to Maxim.

The 25-year-old superstar was named No.1 on the magazine’s annual Hot List, and appears as the covergirl for its June issue.

This is Swift’s first time appearing on the cover of a men’s magazine, and if it’s a pairing that surprises you, the singer’s participation might have something to do with the arrival of Maxim’s new editor-in-chief Kate Lanphear, who has set out to rebrand the magazine that’s best known for photos of scantily clad celebrities.

So when your latest album has already sold more than 4.6 million copies and you’ve been nominated for practically every award out there, just how does it feel to be named No.1 on Maxim’s Hot List?

Swift told the magazine it’s an “incredible compliment.”

“This year has been my favorite year of my life so far. I got to make an album exactly the way I wanted to make it. I got to put it out exactly the way I dreamed of putting it out. Every one of these whims and ideas came to fruition. The videos — I’m proud of those, I’m proud of the tour. I’m proud of the way this has all happened,” she explained. “In the midst of all that, this is really nice. it really feels like a wonderful celebration of my favorite year.”

11 Fun And Fabulous Children's Books From Around The World

The quaint cover of The Giving Tree, with its loosely sketched lines, speaks to the quiet power of the story. Regardless of what you think of the book’s mildly macabre message –- selflessness comes at a cost –- there’s no refuting that its packaging elegantly matches its themes.

Although there’s value in the mantra that we repeat to children about judging books by their covers, there’s also joy to be had when an illustration perfectly conveys the spirit of a story. This is the basis for Martin Salisbury’s new collection, humbly titled 100 Great Children’s Picturebooks. A designer, he’s focused more on the look of the books than the tales they hold, and has selected those with drawings influenced by everything from Romanticism to Futurism.

Salisbury’s selection includes works from around the world, the only criteria being that they were published within the last 100 years. The result is a blend of minimalist designs from Germany, Baroque-inspired frills from France, and soft pastels of Maurice Sendak. The cover of Praia-Mar, a 2011 book from Portugal, is adorned with bold shapes and angular, sunburnt bathers. The softer cover of Jour de neige stars a thoughtful rabbit gazing out a window at a snowy scene.

Courtney Love Releases 'Miss Narcissist'

Earlier this year, Courtney Love told EW that she was “not really interested” in making music at the moment, but the former Hole singer has released a new song, “Miss Narcissist,” via Ghost Ramp, Wavves’ Nathan Williams’ label. She wrote on Facebook that the track will be available on 7″ vinyl this summer with “Radio Killer” as the B-side.

It’s the first time we’ve heard Love’s voice since her guest role as a former junkie rock star on “Empire” earlier this year — she’s featured on “Walk Out On Me” and “Take Me To The River” — and “Miss Narcissist” seems to be a tongue-in-cheek at the way she knows she’s perceived in the media. That’s especially relevant because Love has spent much of the past few months promoting “Montage of Heck,” Brett Morgen’s authorized Kurt-Cobain documentary. Listen below:

Love is currently on tour with Lana Del Rey.

Get Lucky Now: 4 Simple Ways to Jump Start Your Successes in Life

The word luck is often spoken with such exclusivity — as if there’s a Good Luck Club that requires a particular type of DNA and a collection of the finest array of charms in order to join. Having been extremely “lucky” for most of my life, I can attest to the concept of “good luck” being very real. How it is attained, however, has been misleadingly distorted.

I have been strategically setting myself up to be lucky for quite some time now, no rabbit’s foot or special DNA required. We must create our own luck. In other words, the cards themselves aren’t lucky, we bring luck to the cards by how we play the game; life is no different. How are you dealing with the cards that life has been handing to you?

We have likely all heard or read somewhere that our thoughts shape the course of our lives and I don’t doubt it for a second, positive thinking is extremely important to living a successful, content life. This notion, however, is quite vague and missing a key element essential to your luck — purposeful action! Let us look at four simple ways you can jump-start your luck today:

Say Thank You.

Many of us wait until the holidays roll around to begin giving thanks for the many blessings already in our lives. Lucky individuals (I call us Luckies) know that gratitude is essential to increasing the positive happenstances that occur in our lives. We always have something to be thankful for. The genuine smile given by a complete stranger. The hug given by your child. The vacant parking bay found right outside of your job. The smell and sound of the rain that lifted your mood. The shoes you’ve have your eyes on now discounted. These are all moments when you need to say “thank you.” Once we begin acknowledging the smaller lucky breaks that happen daily, the bigger blessings come so quickly.

Your Action Step: Grab a journal (it doesn’t have to be fancy, any book with blank pages would do) and write down five very specific things that happen each day that you are thankful for. I find the more specific we get, the quicker we begin feeling our luck pouring in.

Work On That Personality.

When was the last time you’ve done something to build your character? We often set weight loss goals, financial goals, career goals, but how often do we actually set a goal to improve who we are as human beings? Luckies understand the importance of personality enhancement; we know that our likeability gets us places. We therefore aim to work on parts of our character that need tweaking. Let’s face it, no one is perfect. We could all benefit from making a conscious effort to become better listeners, more compassionate, more humble, more patient, etc.

Your Action Step: Take an honest look at who you are as a person and pick one area that you would like to improve — then make the decision to change. Read books, watch videos and attend seminars on the topic, then put into practice that which is learnt. When you are comfortable with your progress, pick another area. It’s a continual process; the great news is that it is quite enjoyable and it doesn’t take long for you to begin reaping the rewards.

Give Back.

We each have something to give and when we help out those in sincere need, it keeps our own lives in perspective. We begin to notice just how lucky we already are to be able to assist, and the contentment that comes with that thought is true bliss. The principal of causality — the idea that what you do now comes back to you at a future date — often makes giving back a no-brainer. With the aforementioned in mind, however, when we give of our time, efforts, knowledge and/or money to assist another in need, it is truly a beautiful thing and the luck that comes as a result is simply an additional bonus.

Your Action Step: Help someone out today (and each day going forward). It doesn’t have to be difficult and can be very fulfilling. There are so many ways we can give back, but here are some examples to get you started:

  • Offer to read to a child you know (or babysit for an hour to give the parents a break)
  • Give a genuine smile to a complete stranger and offer a sincere compliment
  • Buy a soup and bottle of water and hand it to a homeless individual you pass by
  • Take an older relative out for dinner
  • Call up a friend and lend a listening ear
  • Give a neighbor a hand in the yard

Get to Work.

We often know what we should be doing, it’s the lack of action that halts our progress. What good, however, is a ton of useful information that goes unused? Time to roll up those sleeves and get to work future Luckie, your luck depends on it! If good luck doesn’t find us, we must go out and find it. Following each of the action steps above is a great start, and sticking with them is where you will find true value.

Your Action Steps: Make a conscious decision to be in control of your own luck from here on out. Practice saying “thank you” for your many smaller blessings, work on strengthening your character and give back on a daily basis.

Now grab a piece of paper and pen and write down your biggest goal at the moment. Once this is done I want you to take one baby step today (not tomorrow) to get you a little closer to your goal set. Each day going forward, take another, then another. Make up your mind to stick to it until it’s achieved. You see, with this mindset you cannot lose.

To provide you with an example, if your goal is to save $10,000.00, open up an account and put $100.00 in — you are now one percent closer to achieving your goal than you were yesterday. Remember, many small steps eventually equate to a giant leap so do not give up. Once you start taking calculated action steps, luck will find you.

You now have four “lucky” tools in your arsenal, will you use them?

Two Russian Troops Captured While Fighting In Ukraine

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Two Russian soldiers captured while fighting in war-torn eastern Ukraine are being transported to the capital, Kiev, a Ukrainian military spokesman said Monday.

The Russians were wounded and taken prisoner near the front line town of Shchastia in the Luhansk region on Sunday, Ukrainian officials reported. Russia-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine have been fighting government troops for a year, and Russia has vehemently denied it is supplying them either with weaponry or troops. When several Russian soldiers were captured on Ukrainian territory last summer, Russian President Vladimir Putin said they had simply got lost.

Asked about the new reports Monday, Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov again denied any Russian involvement.

“We have said repeatedly that there are no Russian troops in Donbass,” Peskov said, referring to eastern Ukraine.

The separatist mouthpiece Luhansk Information Center on Sunday said the men identified by Ukraine as Russian officers were in fact two policemen from Luhansk who had been taken prisoner near Shchastia.

Vladislav Seleznev, spokesman for the Ukrainian General Staff, told The Associated Press on Monday that the two men are now being questioned by the Ukrainian Security Service and are on their way to Kiev where they will face the media.

Another Ukrainian military spokesman, Andriy Lysenko, told a televised briefing on Monday that the capture of the men will no longer allow Russia to deny its military presence in Ukraine.

“They were there on a mission and they were killing our people,” he said.

Ukrainian Security Service chief Valentyn Nalyvaichenko has hinted that Ukraine will not seek to exchange the men for any Ukrainians that the separatists or Russia may be holding. He was quoted Sunday by the Interfax agency as saying that the men “are facing criminal responsibility.”

A video posted by a member of parliament on Sunday showed one man who said he was a Russian Army sergeant.

The young man was shown lying in a hospital bed and introduced himself as Sgt. Alexander Alexandrov of the Russian Special Forces from the Volga River city of Togliatti. He said he was operating in the area in a group consisting of 14 men and had been based in the rebel stronghold Luhansk since March 6.

He and his comrades had been rotating in and out of the area around Shchastia every four to five days, he said.

More than 6,100 people have been killed in the conflict, which has left large parts of Ukraine’s industrial heartlands in ruins. A cease-fire brokered by Russia and Western nations in February has made the fighting less intense and deadly but the skirmishes between the separatists and Ukrainian troops are still a daily occurrence.

Grigory Maksimets, a medic of the pro-Kiev volunteer Aidar battalion, told the AP that he attended to the men when they were delivered late Saturday to his hospital in Shchastia, a town less than 20 kilometers north of Luhansk and home to a strategic power station.

One man had been wounded in the shoulder and the other one in the right leg, said Maksimets, who works in intensive care. The men were caught by Ukrainian troops while on a reconnaissance mission around the power station, he said.

The men both introduced themselves as Russian soldiers and were worried that the battalion’s doctors wanted to take their organs for sale, he added.

“They asked not to be sedated because they were afraid we would take their organs,” Maksimets told the AP, adding their Russian commanders had warned them about this.

Two Ukrainian troops were killed in fighting on Sunday, military spokesman Lysenko said, and two volunteers died when their car hit a land mine in the Luhansk region.

When You Can't Find Your Rose-Colored Glasses

This post was first published on A Day in Mollywood.

As someone with a mental illness, I was so happy to hear that May is now officially National Mental Health Awareness Month. So it seems like the perfect time to address some things.

I recently learned I was unfriended on Facebook by some people who thought I could be “too dark” at times. Well, I just want to say — I’m sorry. But I can’t always find my rose-colored glasses. I wish I could spend my time making sure other people are comfortable with every word that comes out of my mouth. But I can’t. And I also don’t want to.

Depression is REAL. Anxiety is REAL. Bipolar disorder is REAL. Mental illness is REAL.

Every year, about 43.7 million American adults suffers from some form of mental illness. That’s one in five, guys. You know what that means? Even if YOU have never had to live with a mental illness, chances are pretty fucking good that someone you know and love has.

They may not talk about it. Hell, I don’t even like to talk about it. But I do. Because MORE PEOPLE SHOULD BE TALKING ABOUT THIS!

Over the years, I have lost a lot of things because of my illness. Love interests, jobs, my keys and/or my phone, memories, whole years. But the one that hurts the most is losing friendships.

I realize I’m not always a fun person to be around. I understand there are some people who, for whatever reason, need to walk away from being friends with me. And that’s OK. There’s nothing to forgive. I know I don’t always say the right thing, do the right thing or make the right choice.

But you know what? That shit still hurts. Even if they weren’t really that great of friends before? It still hurts. Because it reinforces that I am flawed. I am imperfect. There is something inherently wrong with me.

I have always had a hard time seeing through rose-colored glasses. Maybe that’s my illness talking or maybe not. I’ll never know for sure.

Maybe my glasses are extra thick because of what my brain does to me, which by the way, is not my choice. I didn’t choose this, ya know?

Maybe my glasses have smudges on them making it more difficult to see the blessings in my life.

But every once in awhile, when I work really hard at being my best self, I’m able to take those thick, smudgy glasses off. I look around and see an amazing husband who accepts me for exactly who I am. He lovingly says he “loves my crazy” and it means the world to me that he will stick by me when I can’t even find any type of glasses anymore.

Shalz-52

Then I see my kids. My three beautiful children who hug me and kiss me and tell me they love me all the time. It may not be fair to use them as medication. But oh, they are the best balm to my soul that I will ever know. For me, no medicine on the face of this earth could replace their warmth, their smiles or the way they make me belly laugh every single day.

mothersday15

And my family — my mom and dad, my three beautiful, wonderful sisters. I don’t write about them here very often. But through thick and thin, they have always had my back. Even when we were screaming at each other and fighting — I know we would do anything for each other.

Or my friends — I may not have a ton of them, but the ones who have stuck around? They are worth more than gold to me. And I hope someday we are old ladies together, laughing about the hard years and the good years.

_________

I’m not trying to guilt anyone into feeling remorse for walking away from me. The truth is, I don’t really want to be your friend if you don’t really want to be mine. I know I’ve hurt people. I’ve know I’ve made mistakes. I’m not a perfect person.

But I am A PERSON.

A living, breathing, feeling human being who has an illness that sometimes makes it difficult to function like a living, breathing, feeling human being. All I know is the best kind of people in my life are the ones who stay and say…

I don’t know where your rose-colored glasses are but let me help you look.

Lindsey Graham Teases Presidential Campaign: 'I'm Running Because I Think The World Is Falling Apart'

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Monday he would make an official announcement about his 2016 plans on June 1, hinting heavily he’s likely to enter the GOP primary race.

“I’m running because I think the world is falling apart,” Graham said in an interview on “CBS This Morning.”

Graham has hinted at a presidential campaign before, saying there was a 91 percent chance he’d run.

“I’ve got to put the means together,” Graham told Fox in April. “I think I’ve got a good message. I think I’ve been more right than wrong on foreign policy. I’ve criticized the president for leading from behind, for being weak and indecisive. I’ve been a problem solver in Washington, and I think I’ve got something to offer the party and the nation.”

In January, Graham announced he’d set up a committee called “Security Through Strength” to begin exploring a presidential run.

HuffPost’s Pollster shows Graham struggling against potential GOP challengers, including Sens. Marco Rubio (Fla.), Rand Paul (Ky.) and Ted Cruz (Texas), who have all already officially announced their campaigns:

Discovery Of Rare Quadruple Quasar System Baffles Astronomers

Call it the cosmic equivalent of winning the lottery: for the first time ever, astronomers have discovered four of the rare, super-luminous celestial objects known as quasars arrayed in close proximity to one another.

Quasars are typically separated by vast distances, and the discovery of this “quasar quartet” has been characterized as either a one-in-10-million coincidence or evidence that ideas about quasars need to be revised.

(Story continues below image.)
quasar
In this false-color image, arrows indicate the four quasars that are embedded in a giant nebula of cool, dense gas (shown in blue).

Multiple-quasar systems are rare, because quasars themselves are rare,” Dr. Joseph Hennawi, a cosmologist at Germany’s Max Planck Institute for Astronomy and the leader of the team of astronomers who made the discovery, told Space.com. “The typical distance between any two quasars is about 100 million light-years of each other, whereas we found four quasars within 700,000 light-years of each other.”

Nearly 500,000 quasars have been identified so far, according to Space.com. But scientists know of only about 100 binary quasars and only a couple of triple quasars.

This is the first four-quasar system ever observed.

The newfound quasars were discovered with the help of Hawaii’s W.M. Keck Observatory. They lie in a giant nebula that for obvious reasons has been dubbed the “Jackpot nebula.” The nebula spans about one million light-years and has a mass of about 100 billion suns, according to EarthSky.com.

What’s a quasar? Quasars are supermassive black holes at the heart of galaxies that are extremely remote and thus extremely ancient. As these monsters gobble up gas that surrounds them, they shine hundreds of times more brilliantly than their host galaxies, according to Science magazine–even though the galaxies contain up to hundreds of billions of stars.

All supermassive black holes in big galaxies are believed to undergo a quasar phase, according to a written statement issued by the institute. But this phase lasts for only about 10 million years–a very brief time given galaxies’ much longer ages of 10 billion years and counting.

Time for revisions. So did the astronomers who discovered the quasar quartet really get lucky–or does the discovery suggest that revisions are needed to the models for how quasars form?

“I think that our thinking needs to be revised,” Hennawi told The Huffington Post in an email. “We have theories about what causes a supermassive black hole at the center of a galaxy to turn on as a quasar, and typically something like a collision between two galaxies or an abundance of fuel for the black holes to swallow is the factor that turns on the quasar phase. These theories, however, would not predict the existence of this quartet.”

What’s next? To figure out what might explain the existence of the quartet, the astronomers will try to find similar systems.

“This sounds obviously like a daunting task since the odds of four quasar [discovery] is one in 10 million,” Hennawi said in the email. “However, we have a clean recipe for how to proceed.”

A paper describing the discovery was published in the journal Science on May 15, 2015.

Beaver Browses Hardware Store, Can't Find Anything Worth A Dam

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) — A beaver walked into an Alaska hardware store on Friday, but couldn’t find anything for his lodge.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports (http://is.gd/6oWIqo) the beaver triggered the automatic doors and walked into Lowe’s about 7 a.m. Friday.

Employees trapped the beaver with a cardboard box in the plumbing department. A state wildlife biologist was called.

Ton Hollis says he’s used to wake-up calls about “a bear in town or an ornery moose or something, but this was a little different.”

Hollis released the beaver into the Tanana River, far enough from town where it won’t be a nuisance.

Lowe’s assistant manager Adam Vanhoveln says the beaver didn’t cause too much of a commotion, and it didn’t reach the lumber department.
