The US wants cars to 'talk' to each other, sooner rather than later

The Department of Transportation wants America’s cars to talk to each other, and it wants that to happen pretty soon. That’s why Secretary Anthony Foxx has announced that legislation to make vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication a mandatory feature …

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Pegged For July Launch [Rumor]

galaxy-note-4-review-15Without fail, Samsung has launched every iteration of their Galaxy Note series of smartphones at IFA which usually takes place in the later part of the year, but could Samsung be thinking of breaking tradition with the Galaxy Note 5? Apparently they are according to new rumors which suggests that the handset might be announced in July instead.

Of course it’s not necessary for Samsung to keep launching their products at IFA, but given that it’s what they’ve been doing over the past few years, many naturally assume that the same would happen this year. However the rumors are claiming that perhaps to pre-empt Apple’s announcement of the iPhone 6s/6s Plus, Samsung is choosing to launch it earlier instead.

Apple usually launches new smartphones towards the end of Q3 around September which is also when IFA is taking place, so by announcing new Galaxy Note handsets before Apple, Samsung is probably hoping that customers will be too amazed by it and decided to go with the new Note handsets instead of the new iPhones.

So far based on what we’ve heard about the Galaxy Note 5, its hardware looks pretty impressive. The rumors are claiming it could feature a 5.9-inch 4K display (which is pretty insane). It is also rumored to pack a large 4,100mAh battery and will support microSD cards that allows memory expansion up to 256GB. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but we’ll keep an eye out for any potential announcements from Samsung down the road.

Samsung Confirms That Tizen Will Be Here To Stay

tizenWhen it comes to mobile products, Samsung is probably best known for their Android devices. However in the past couple of years, the South Korean tech giant has turned to alternative operating systems such as Tizen. So far it does not seem like Tizen will be taking over the world just yet, but this does not mean that Samsung will be giving up just yet.

Speaking at SAS 2015 Forum in Seoul, Samsung Electronics Software Center VP Jong-deok Choi reassured attendees that Tizen will not be going anywhere. According to Choi,  “We are preparing for the Internet of Things, and Tizen as ‘The OS of Everything’ will be the core platform.”

Besides being used for smartphones, Samsung has also used Tizen to power their wearables, like the Samsung Gear S and if the rumors are to be believed, Samsung’s upcoming round smartwatch is also expected to be powered by Tizen as well. In fact Samsung’s first and only Android Wear smartwatch, the Gear Live, is no longer listed on Google Play.

In any case like we said, there is more to Tizen than just smartphones, so while Tizen might have a hard time trying to compete against iOS and Android on mobile, it seems that in other areas Tizen might shine, like in connected objects such as smart TVs, fitness bands, home electronics, and more.

LG G4 Begins Shipping This Week Other Countries

lg-g4-industrial-design-14The LG G4 was announced last month and if you were wondering when you might be able to get your hands on it, you will be semi-pleased to learn that according to LG, shipments of the LG G4 will begin rolling out this week. The bad news is that it seems that the initial roll out will not cover the US market.

According to LG, markets like Europe and North America will be followed shortly. Instead LG has chosen to launch in countries such as Singapore, Turkey, and Russia first. LG’s statement reads, “Starting in Hong Kong, the G4 will follow with rollouts in Turkey, Russia and Singapore, eventually including most of Europe, North America, CIS, Southeast Asia, Middle East/Africa and South/Central America.”

Official pricing and availability of the LG G4 for the US market still remains unknown. Last we heard, it was confirmed that the LG G4 would be arriving on all four major carriers in the US – Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint. T-Mobile is also allowing customers to preview the handset starting 25th of May where they can try it out for a brief period before committing to it.

However like we said, despite all carriers stating their intention to carry the device, none of them have given a solid release date yet. In any case hopefully with the handset starting to ship out now, we won’t have to wait too long to get a concrete release date from US carriers.

Sony Could Announced Xperia Z4’s International Release On 26th May

sony xperia z4When the Sony Xperia Z4 was launched, many were surprised to learn that it appeared to be a Japan-only handset, as opposed to Sony’s previous Xperia Z offerings which were released to other markets in the world. However there might be some good news as Sony is said to be hosting an event on the 26th of May in New Delhi, India in which the handset’s international availability is expected to be announced.

The invite for the event basically asks fans and customers to block the date for the 26th of May. It also shows water splashing in the background which seems to hint that it could be a product launch for sports, or a product that is water-resistant, like the Xperia Z4, although there are some who believe that the Xperia M4 Aqua might make an appearance as well.

Given that the launch is taking place outside of Japan, it has led to speculation that this could mean that Sony might be announcing the international availability of the Sony Xperia Z4. This isn’t that huge of a stretch considering that a rumor from last week suggested that Verizon could be offering the handset in the near future, so like we said international availability of the phone certainly looks like it’s looming.

We suggest you guys try not to get your hopes up just yet in case the event does not yield any good news, but check back with us next week to see if there are any details to be had.

Huawei’s Nexus Said To Be Based On Upcoming Mate 8

huawei-mate-7-review-20Last year Huawei launched the Mate 7 handset which is actually a pretty nicely-designed phone. It featured pretty thin bezels which allowed the phone to sport a larger display but not feel too bulky. Presumably its successor the Mate 8 will be following in its footsteps and if the rumors are to be believed, the Huawei-made Nexus is said to be based on that of the Mate 8.

At the moment no one really knows what the upcoming Mate 8 handset from Huawei looks like, but it has been speculated that it will share a similar design to the Mate 7, so you can always try to imagine the Mate 7 as a Nexus device if you want to get a very rough idea of what to expect. It might not necessarily be 100% accurate but you get the picture.

However apart from sharing similarities in its design, under the hood is where the differences will lie. The upcoming Huawei Nexus phone is rumored to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor whereas the Huawei Mate 8 is said to be powered by the company’s own Kirin 930 processor, although there are rumors that Huawei could use the Kirin 950 to power the Nexus but that remains to be seen.

Other than that, both phones will have some shared specs too, such as a 5.7-inch QHD display, a metal chassis, and generous use of glass. Take it with a grain of salt for now but perhaps we might learn more at Google I/O which kicks off next week.

Huawei Rumored To Be Working On Kirin OS

huawei-mate-7-review-09Companies deviating from Google’s Android and trying to release their own platforms isn’t anything new. For example we have the likes of Samsung’s Tizen, OnePlus’ OxygenOS, CyanogenMod, and more just to name a few. While some of them are based on Android, they feature pretty heavy modifications that attempts to be its own operating system.

Now if the rumors are true, it seems that Huawei is interested in creating their own platform as well dubbed Kiris OS, which is also the same name as its in-house chipsets. Not much is known about Kirin OS at the moment except that apparently it has been in the works for the past three years, so this is definitely something Huawei has been considering for quite a while now.

The goal is apparently to allow the company more flexibility when it comes to controlling its own operating system as opposed to having to rely on Google all the time for updates, changes, and new features. Whether or not this is an OS built from the ground up or if it will follow in the footsteps of OxygenOS and CyanogenMod where it is based on Android remains to be seen.

That being said Huawei will definitely face a fair bit of competition so hopefully whatever OS it is that they’re working on will prove to be sufficient enough to make customers want to keep using it.

How has your life experience made you the leader you are today?
Since moving to the U.S. from India, I have been very spontaneous with decisions. I have lived in a number of different cities (San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia) and have been fortunate enough to receive amazing opportunities in which I have uprooted my life many times to pursue. Taking these chances has prepared me to take risks and use it to my benefit. I’ve made great connections and learned a lot along the way. As a leader, and a leader in the fashion industry in particular, you have to keep evolving. My experience over the past 18 years has taught me that nothing is impossible, so stick to what you want to do. I have been told “no” many times and this just pushes me to do more, better. Since launching DAILYLOOK, we’ve had a lot of changes in the business and it makes me appreciate the small milestones and absorb these moments because it gives you the encouragement to keep moving forward and keep improving.

How has your previous employment experience aided your position at DailyLook?
At every level at every company, I have learned a lot. While at Macy’s Inc., I learned a lot about product development, quality, and value. At Old Navy, I gained experience in learning to negotiate, work as a team, and how a big ship maneuvers itself to make a shift in business. Everyone at Old Navy had a great time at their jobs and really emphasized the importance of working hard and playing hard. At Free People, I gained knowledge on branding, how to tell a story, and the ins and outs of e-commerce. At Pac Sun, I learned survival and how to never give up, and making changes to solve problems. All these lessons have made me stronger in my position as Co-Founder of DAILYLOOK.

What have the highlights and challenges been during your tenure at DailyLook?
There have been a number of exciting moments at DAILYLOOK, but the biggest highlight had to be the first time we doubled our sales goal for the month. It was a high stress time, we were pulling out every resources, and everyone’s hard work paid off for that incredible moment. Another big highlight was building a brand and company culture. We have such an outstanding team who are passionate in the DAILYLOOK story and it has been wonderful to receive undying support from the team. Series A fundraising as well as launching DAILYLOOK ELITE were also huge highlights for the business. Some challenges at DAILYLOOK have been retention and lack of budget. Because people believed in us, we had people working for us even though the situation was not economically ideal. We learned to balance everything we did with limited resources and coming up with creative methods to enhance the brand on a tight budget. Without these challenges, the business would not be where it is now.

What advice can you offer to those who want to start their own business?
I think the key thing to keep in mind when starting your own business, would be to really understand the end goal you are trying to achieve. Identify the final mission and be open to the constantly changing process that is involved. “Don’t be afraid to fail, be afraid not to try” is the motto I live by. You have to be tenacious and accept that every failure is a step closer to success. Do not let go when it gets tough or mistakes are made, just learn to adapt. Another piece of advice when starting this exciting chapter is to surround yourself with good people that bring different perspectives to your business to create a collaborative team environment.

How do you maintain a work/life balance?
It has definitely been a journey to balance my personal and work life. Over the years, I have really learned to accept stress and know that there will be moments of high stress and times of flourishing in the successes that come out of this time. I have made it a point to take a holiday every six months. While on vacation, I check my emails for 30 minutes each day and lock my phone up in the safe the rest of the day. Taking this time to reboot and gather my thoughts allows me to come back to the office with a fresh new perspective on how to improve the brand experience and take the business up a notch. Additionally, I always ensure to give myself plenty of time with my family and husband as well as maintaining a healthy active lifestyle.

What do you think is the biggest issue for women in the workplace?
I personally have never taken gender or being a woman into consideration at work or life in general. I think of me as a strong willed and passionate individual who will not stop striving at it until her goal is achieved. All I focus on is what I set out to do and how to get there with perseverance and excellence. Although during my life experiences I have noticed that women are sometimes not given an opportunity based on their potential, but given based on their performance. This doesn’t disappoint me or hold me back but makes me push for my goals even stronger.

How has mentorship made a difference in your professional and personal life?
I am fortunate to have two very important and influential men in my life, my husband and father. Each offer support and guidance in their own way – My father is my biggest fan and supports me undyingly, while my husband gives it to me straight and gives me the honest advice I need. I am also very grateful to have powerful women in my life who have similar experiences in managing a team and building a brand. Their experience and advice is incredibly valuable. My friend Nadia Allaudin, Senior Vice President of Wealth Management at Merril Lynch, has taught me that every person is unique and can flourish in their own way. Nadia has the philosophy of life down. Another friend of mine, Anjula Acharia-Bath, is a branding queen. She has taught me so much about thinking big and networking. Another person that I look to for guidance is Susan Feldman, Founder of One Kings Lane, who offers great advice on creating a brand that resonates with a customer.

Which other female leaders do you admire and why?
The President of Pepsi Co., Indra Nooyi, is a role model in all aspects of life in the way she balances family life and flourishing career. It excites me to see such powerful, strategic women at the head of the company. It is encouraging to see other women rise up in these top roles to continue this culture of women in the workplace. Another woman I admire is Oprah Winfrey, who has built a brand that offers followers motivation for self-improvement and evidence that anyone can control their own destiny. She is a strong powerhouse with substance behind what she says and works to make a difference in people’s lives.

What do you want DailyLook to accomplish in the next year?
We are on a mission to create an innovative Omni channel platform for the DAILYLOOK ELITE community of professional, metropolitan, on-the-go women where she gets all her inspiration and fashion needs met and receives a personalized curated experience on her schedule and at her convenience. Our goal is to be part of her day-to-day life and continue to be a destination that inspires confidence through self-expression by taking care of her fashion needs so she looks and feels on top of her game. Be the trusted destination that gives her time back to enjoy other life experiences that she thrives on.

President Barack Obama Bans Some Military-Style Equipment Provided To Police

WASHINGTON (AP) — In a surprise announcement coming nine months after police in riot gear dispelled racially charged protests, President Barack Obama is banning the federal government from providing some military-style equipment to local departments and putting stricter controls on other weapons and gear distributed to law enforcement.

The announcement comes after the White House suggested last year that Obama would maintain programs that provide the type of military-style equipment used to respond to demonstrators last summer in Ferguson, Missouri, because of their broader contribution to public safety. But an interagency group found “substantial risk of misusing or overusing” items like tracked armored vehicles, high-powered firearms and camouflage could undermine trust in police. With scrutiny on police only increasing in the ensuing months after a series of highly publicized deaths of black suspects nationwide, Obama also is unveiling the final report of a task force he created to help build confidence between police and minority communities in particular. The announcements come as Obama is visiting Camden, New Jersey, one of the country’s most violent and poorest cities.

Obama plans to visit Camden police headquarters before heading to a community center to meet with youth and law enforcement and give a speech. “I’ll highlight steps all cities can take to maintain trust between the brave law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line, and the communities they’re sworn to serve and protect,” Obama said in his weekly address out Saturday.

In previewing the president’s trip, the White House said that effective immediately, the federal government will no longer fund or provide armored vehicles that run on a tracked system instead of wheels, weaponized aircraft or vehicles, firearms or ammunition of .50-caliber or higher, grenade launchers, bayonets or camouflage uniforms. The federal government also is exploring ways to recall prohibited equipment already distributed.

In addition, a longer list of equipment the federal government provides will come under tighter control, including wheeled armored vehicles like Humvees, manned aircraft, drones, specialized firearms, explosives, battering rams and riot batons, helmets and shields. Starting in October, police will have to get approval from their city council, mayor or some other local governing body to obtain it, provide a persuasive explanation of why it is needed and have more training and data collection on the use of the equipment.

The issue of police militarization rose to prominence last year after a white police officer in Ferguson fatally shot unarmed black 18-year-old Michael Brown, sparking protests. Critics questioned why police in full body armor with armored trucks responded to dispel demonstrators, and Obama seemed to sympathize when ordering a review of the programs that provide the equipment. “There is a big difference between our military and our local law enforcement and we don’t want those lines blurred,” Obama last in August.

But he did not announce a ban in December with the publication of the review, which showed five federal agencies spent $18 billion on programs that provided equipment including 92,442 small arms, 44,275 night-vision devices, 5,235 Humvees, 617 mine-resistant vehicles and 616 aircraft. At the time, the White House defended the programs as proving to be useful in many cases, such as the response to the Boston Marathon bombing. Instead of repealing the programs, Obama issued an executive order that required federal agencies that run the programs to consult with law enforcement and civil rights and civil liberties organizations to recommend changes that make sure they are accountable and transparent.

That working group said in a report out Monday that it developed the list of newly banned equipment because “the substantial risk of misusing or overusing these items, which are seen as militaristic in nature, could significantly undermine community trust and may encourage tactics and behaviors that are inconsistent with the premise of civilian law enforcement.” The Justice Department did not respond to an inquiry about how many pieces of equipment that are now banned had been previously distributed through federal programs.

The separate report from the 21st Century Policing task force has a long list of recommendations to improve trust in police, including encouraging more transparency about interactions with the public. The White House said 21 police agencies nationwide, including Camden and nearby Philadelphia, have agreed to start putting out never-before released data on citizen interactions like use of force, stops, citations and officer-involved shootings. The administration also is launching an online toolkit to encourage the use of body cameras to record police interactions. And the Justice Department is giving $163 million in grants to incentivize police departments to adopt the report’s recommendations.

Ron Davis, director of the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services at the Department of Justice, told reporters he hoped the report could be a “key transformational document” in rebuilding trust that has been destroyed in recent years between police and minority communities.

“We are without a doubt sitting at a defining moment for American policing,” said Davis, a 30-year police veteran and former chief of the East Palo Alto (California) Police Department. “We have a unique opportunity to redefine policing in our democracy, to ensure that public safety becomes more than the absence of crime, that it must also include the presence of justice.”
