My Mad Men Lost Weekend

I’m calling it the Mad Men Lost Weekend. I spent most of the weekend watching the Mad Men marathon on AMC. I couldn’t look away. I’ve been having trouble sleeping lately, so when I would wake up at 4 am, I would put the tv on and catch Mad Men, I would watch it during the day, I would watch it at night, I would watch it before the gym and after the gym, I would run out for lunch and dinner, but it was all wrapped around Mad Men. I came to the conclusion that I want to be Don Drapper. Not so much him, but I want to have his attitude about life.

The final episodes showed me what I want to do, to get in a car and keep driving to make changes in my life.

I did notice so many things about the show during the marathon that I didn’t catch the first time around, I think that I’m half asleep on Sunday nights at 10 pm, so I have only been half watching the show in its regular prime time spot, but watching the marathon has shown me so much about what makes the show great, there are so many nuances and so many great characters.

I never realized how much they drink or drank in the 1960s. It’s like fuel to them, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Before a meeting, during a meeting and after a meeting, they would drink if they got a big contract, they would drink if they lost a big contract; they would enter an office and pour a drink, they would enter a restaurant and drink for a long time before ordering food. It looks like they would drink mostly Beefeater and Canadian Club. Straight up. Did they have a product placment deal with the show?

They smoked a lot, too. Betty found out the hard way in the end.

Roger and Joan were my two favorite characters. They both had character. Betty was my least favorite. She had no character.

I loved that you could tell what year it was by the real-life news they would show going on at the time. I loved that the magazines and newspapers and even soft drink cans for Tab and Coke, were totally accurate. The tv shows were accurate for the times and years, too. The attention to detail was perfectly accurate. And oh yea, the clothing. Perfect as well as the furniture and New York City and Los Angeles. Perfect for the times. In one episide Peggy is asked if she is willing to move to the West 80s in NYC, that is was a dangerous area to be in. Same with riding the subway. It was not the thing to do for the faint of heart.

The ads were all great, too. Real products, most still exist to this day, many don’t. Mohawk Airlines is real, they went out of business in 1972; Burger Chef was real, it went out of business in 1996. Guess Stirling Cooper couldn’t save Mohawk Airlines. I remember the first few seasons they would show the tv show sponsors’ original commercials during the show, you know, from the 1960s, rather than today’s commercials. And of course in the end we find out (spoiler alert) that Don created the famous Coca Cola “I’d like to teach the world to sing” commercial.

One thing I learned from Don is that you will fall a lot, and it’s always important to pick yourself up. That’s always been one of my favorite sayings, Vince Lombardi said it first, “It doesn’t matter how many times you get knocked down but how many times you get up.” I’ve always lived by that saying. I think that’s my “saying” on Facebook, they ask you to have a quote or motto.

I was never a major fan of Mad Men, I watched it because it was an excellent show, but I don’t know if I’ll miss it. I’m surprised I watched all the reruns during the marathon because I usually find it hard to watch a dramatic tv show over and over again, but with Mad Men I think it’s more than the story, it’s about the time period, the styles, the people and the acting. The story of each episode doesn’t really matter as much as the feeling you get when watching it. It envelopes you. It’s a time machine. An accurate time machine from 1960 to 1970.

The GOP Is Dying Off. Literally. – Daniel J. McGraw – POLITICO Magazine

It turns out that one of the Grand Old Party’s biggest—and least discussed—challenges going into 2016 is lying in plain sight, written right into the party’s own nickname. The Republican Party voter is old—and getting older, and as the adage goes, there are two certainties in life: Death and taxes. Right now, both are enemies of the GOP and they might want to worry more about the former than the latter.

There’s been much written about how millennials are becoming a reliable voting bloc for Democrats, but there’s been much less attention paid to one of the biggest get-out-the-vote challenges for the Republican Party heading into the next presidential election: Hundreds of thousands of their traditional core supporters won’t be able to turn out to vote at all.

The party’s core is dying off by the day.

Michael Fassbender Invents The Future In First 'Steve Jobs' Teaser

“I sat in a garage and invented the future,” Michael Fassbender says in a voiceover in the first “Steve Jobs” teaser.

Fassbender portrays the Apple CEO and innovator in the biopic written by Aaron Sorkin and directed by Danny Boyle. The teaser also gives a quick glimpse at the rest of the cast, including Kate Winslet as Joanna Hoffman, former
marketing chief of Macintosh Seth Rogen as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and Jeff Daniels as former Apple CEO John Sculley.

The film follows three major product launches for Apple up until the unveiling of the iMac. The biopic also stars Katherine Waterston and Michael Stuhlbarg. “Steve Jobs” opens October 9.

A Slice of Nutrition

Get ready people — the pizza takeover is about to begin. As a dietitian and foodie in NYC, I tend to see the waves of food trends crest from tiny shops in Bushwick, Brooklyn to large corporate restaurants all over the country. Luckily this next wave is one of America’s cheesy favorites and, believe it or not, it can be a part of a healthy diet.

2015-04-30-1430406613-3624220-GinaKeatley_Pizza.jpg

Pizza itself can be a great base for fresh and healthy ingredients. Like all things in nutrition, it’s about choice. In fact, we know Italians love their pizza but tend to have a lower BMI than most Americans. According to the World Health Organization, Italy has 23 percent less obesity than the United States. When we look at nutritional breakdowns of pizza from national chains here in the States, we can see that pizza has a broad scope, from a whopping 1,705 calories and 115 grams of fat for half of a regular-sized deep dish Chicago Classic from Uno Pizzeria and Grill, to roasted artichoke and spinach pizza with chicken from California Pizza Kitchen with a more manageable 625 calories and 22 grams of fat for half a pie. So, here are three things you can do to keep your pies on the nourishing side:

1. Make it a meal by adding lean protein and vegetables. This is by far my favorite rule for all food, not just pizza. When you are ordering your pizza, remember to add fiber and protein to each slice. As always, chose lower saturated-fat meats. According to the American Heart Association, eating foods that contain saturated fats raises the level of cholesterol in your blood. High levels of LDL cholesterol in your blood increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. That means you should try lean(er) proteins like sliced chicken breast or even Canadian bacon over regular bacon to cut your fat by 60 percent. Then add complex carbohydrates like spinach. Luckily for you, a large part of this new pie revival is that restaurants will be offering tons of topping options.

2. Think Thin. Choosing thin crust can cut off tons of carbohydrates and calories from your menu. Additionally, eating the thinner slices can actually make you feel fuller because we perceive the felling of quantity to being satisfied with the meal. Having three thin slices may make you feel as satiated as one large slice.

3. Memories and Moderation. Make pizza meals fun and special but eat it in moderation. Most of us remember pizza parties from our youth or a great first date that started over a piping hot pie. These memories are special not just because of the food, but also the company. Head out for a pie no more then a few times a month and try not to mindlessly grab a slice between errands. Sit down, eat, and give the pie the time and respect this mouthwatering meal really deserves.

Pizza, like all great foods, can be nutritious if we choose for it to be healthful. With a few small modifications both to nutrition and lifestyle, we truly can transform the menu with all of the passion and none of the pounds.

Metallica's James Hetfield & Daughter Cali Cover Adele's 'Crazy For You'

Metallica frontman James Hetfield treated the audience at a benefit concert on Friday night to a very special guest: his daughter, who proceeded to wow the crowd as they put their own spin on Adele’s “Crazy for You.”

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree because 16-year-old Cali Hetfield has a powerful set of pipes. Check it out in the fan-shot video above, and be sure to look for the proud papa smiling and nodding along as his daughter sings. (You can view the performance from another angle here.)

The two performed at the “Acoustic-4-A-Cure” benefit for the Pediatric Cancer Program at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. Acoustic-4-A-Cure was created by Hetfield and singer Sammy Hagar, who acted as emcee and performed a few numbers of his own including “The Thrill Is Gone” in tribute to B.B. King, who died last week at the age of 89, and “Somebody to Love” with Linda Perry.

Other highlights of the concert include Hetfield performing Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear the Reaper” with Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains. Cantrell also performed Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here.” Comic/actor Adam Sandler joined Patrick Monahan of Train and Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers for Aerosmith’s “Dream On,” and Led Zeppelin’s “Ramble On.”

Spring Cleaning For Your Career [part 3 / 3]

2015-05-18-1431919124-8982403-5187038544_d8dd3aed9b.jpg

This is part three in a three-part series on tidying up your inner world: your beliefs, practices, and personal habits. [Click here to read part one and here for part two.]

I call it: spring cleaning for your life!

Today’s spring cleaning checklist is all about your career.

You’re likely to spend about 90,000 hours at “work” over the course of your lifetime. That’s a huge portion of your life, so it’s never a bad idea to check in and make sure you’re feeling satisfied, working productively, and moving in a direction that feels right for you… rather than just going through the motions, clocking in, and clocking out.

You deserve a career that feels meaningful — and you can create it.

Let’s begin.

Work your way through the checklist and tick off items as you complete them.

As always: this spring cleaning checklist is just a starting off point.

Feel free to expand or tweak it to suit where you’re currently at in your career.

Add any items that, ahem, spring to mind!

PART THREE: CHECKLIST FOR YOUR CAREER

Achievements.

[  ]  Make a list of your major achievements at work over the past six to twelve months. Be as specific and results-focused as you can (try this: “reinvented the dessert menu, rewrote the menu copy, raised sales by 29%” rather than: “changed dessert menu.”)

[  ]  Read your list of achievements back to yourself. Reaffirm that you’re making a difference at work and in the world. Know, too, that whenever you’re ready to go for a promotion, a new job, or even an entirely new career, you’ll be equipped with data to prove that you’ve got what it takes to succeed!

Opportunities.

[  ]  See if your company has any opportunities you might be missing out on — like educational opportunities, training, conferences, or mentoring partnerships that could enhance your life and career. Choose an opportunity that feels exciting and sign up! (If you’re self employed, look for workshops, seminars, e-courses, or opportunities to collaborate with peers you admire. Go for it!)

Commitments.

[  ]  Review everything on your calendar for the upcoming month. Notice which projects or commitments create feelings of bitterness, exhaustion, or resentment. See if there’s something you can do about that — changing the scope or timeline of the project, changing your attitude about the commitment, or canceling if absolutely necessary.

Try to get to a place where all of the commitments on your calendar feel meaningful and essential, rather than frustrating or flat-out unnecessary. (This is a huge gift for your emotional wellbeing!)

[  ]  Flex your “no” muscles. Start paying attention to how many times a day you say “sure!” when your body / intuition is saying, “nooo.” Keep a stash of email scripts in the drafts folder of your inbox so that you’ve got easy-to-grab language to help you say “no” to requests that aren’t reasonable or simply don’t feel right. (This universal “no” script might help.)

Self care at work.

[  ]  Swap out your standard desk chair for a standing desk, if possible. Sitting for multiple hours every day can wreak havoc on your physical and emotional health. Get up on your feet! This one tweak, alone, could shift your entire year.

[  ]  Set a timer to remind you to take a break, pop outside for fresh air, stretch, or indulge in a calming meditation every 90 minutes or so. (Productivity experts recommend a 10-minute break every 90 minutes. This 90-10 cycle mirrors your body’s natural ultradian rhythm. Syncing up with this rhythm enhances your focus and productivity!)

[  ]  Turn your workspace into your personal happy zone. Fresh flowers, photos of loved ones, switching up the color palette, or a big burst of de-cluttering… aesthetic upgrades can definitely create a big mood lift! (These beautiful workspaces are so inspiring!)

CLOSING WORDS

Remember:

Rolling a new coat of paint onto the walls, organizing your cabinets and drawers, and spritzing a homemade vinegar cleaning solution onto your kitchen table are all terrific steps to take (who doesn’t love a fresh, clean, tidy living space?).

But while changing your external surroundings can create a temporary mood boost, it’s got to be combined with an “inner clean up” if you want those positive feelings to last.

This spring, focus on spring cleaning your mind.

Use this energizing season of renewal and rebirth as an opportunity to tune-up your inner world.

Do that, first, and you’ll see results that last long after spring blossoms turn into summer flowers, autumn leaves, and beyond.

Behold, my friends, the spring is come; the earth has gladly received the embraces of the sun, and we shall soon see the results of their love!
–Sitting Bull.

Stay focused.

Believe in your ability to transform.

Soon, you will see real growth, new habits taking root, and lasting change that ripples into every part of your life. Soon, you will see the “results of your love.”

Have a beautiful spring!

Iggy Azalea Wins Top Rap Artist At The Billboard Music Awards

Iggy Azalea is officially the No. 1 rapper, at least according to the Billboard Music Awards.

The “Fancy” hit maker won the award for Top Rap Artist on Sunday night, but you probably didn’t know that since her win wasn’t televised during the awards show. Azalea bested 2013 winner Nicki Minaj, as well as Drake, J. Cole and Rae Sremmurd. Some may be left pondering one question, though: I-G-G-WHY?

Azalea’s win shouldn’t be much of a surprise, since she made Billboard history last year as the female rapper with the longest run on the Hot 100 chart. The rapper’s hit “Fancy” with Charlie XCX spent seven consecutive weeks at No. 1 and was named Billboard’s Song of the Summer last year.

In addition to “Fancy,” Azalea’s “Problem” featuring Ariana Grande became the rapper’s second biggest single in the U.S. and remained in the top 10 of the Hot 100 for sixteen weeks. When “Problem” peaked at the No. 2 spot, Azalea made even more history, matching with The Beatles as the second act ever to appear in the top two spots of the Hot 100 with their first two Billboard Hot 100 hits in the U.S. The rapper was also only the third woman to have the top two spots on the chart, alongside Mariah Carey and Ashanti.

This is Azalea’s third Billboard Music Award. She also won Top Rap Song for “Fancy” and Top Streaming Artist. Azalea was also nominated for Top New Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Digital Songs Artist, Top Rap Album for “The New Classic,” Top Hot 100 Song for “Fancy,” Top Streaming Song (Audio) for “Fancy,” the fan-voted Billboard Chart Achievement Award, and again in the Top Rap Song category for “Black Widow.”

Azalea also performed alongside Britney Spears at the award show, belting out their new single “Pretty Girls.”

Don't Let Cyberbullying Ruin Fitness

YouTube sensation Whitney Thore gained international recognition after posting a video called “A Fat Girl Dancing: Talk Dirty.” The video shows Whitney at 380 pounds trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Whitney was once a slim dancer, but over the course of just one year at college, she gained 200 pounds due to a condition called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

While many view the video as a triumph for fitness at all sizes, negative comments flooded the YouTube clip. One user recently wrote “Fit boy: barely winded. Fat cow: ready to die.

Whitney is not the only one experiencing this kind of cyberbullying. A Facebook page called “530 Fatties” targeting overweight individuals in the Northern California 530 area code fell under fire on “The Today Show.” The page no longer exists, but the photographs and memory will plague those people targeted by cyberbullies for a long time and the emotional and psychological effects can be life-altering.

Eliza Kingsford, the executive director of Wellspring Camps, is all too familiar with the impact of cyberbullying on weight and fitness practices. Historically, the campers have not had access to their phones or electronic devices. But this year, Wellspring is allowing access to their phones due to overwhelming pressure from campers and their parents to have access to the devices that they so strongly rely on in their everyday lives. The camp is prepared for potential cyberbullying issues now and has trained the staff to talk about social media.

How can parents and friends encourage a healthy fitness dialogue when cyberbullying overweight and obese individuals is so prevalent?

1. Cyberbullying and its impact on fitness

Bullying individuals about their weight has become such a critical issue that British researcher Dr. Sarah Jackson believes mocking overweight individuals should be illegal. Jackson conducted a study of 5,000 U.K. adults and found that overweight people who feel discriminated against experienced a 70 percent increase in symptoms of depression. The research suggests weight discrimination accounts for 40 percent of obesity’s negative psychological effects.

Depression can affect motivation, including the motivation to exercise, reports Harvard Medical School. Depressed individuals may lose motivation to exercise due to lack of enjoyment or low energy levels. Exercising releases mood-boosting endorphins, so lack of motivation to exercise perpetuates the cycle of sadness.

Cyberbullying takes place using electronic technology. This includes devices and equipment such as cell phones, computers, and tablets as well as communication tools including social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites. Cyberbullying is often most feared because it can reach a child 24 hours a day, seven days a week, even when that child is alone and not in school. Cyberbullying is not unique to overweight or obese children, in fact it’s just another unfortunate example of teenagers and adolescents today to be cruel to one another.

Cyberbullying is a practice that should not be tolerated. Below are some tips on how to deal with cyberbullies and maintain your commitment to a healthy and happy lifestyle.

Takeaway Tips for Responding to Fat-Shaming Cyberbullies

Speak up It can be hard to feel like you want to tell someone what is going on, especially if you’ve told someone in the past and nothing has happened. But the truth is, silence only makes the bully stronger. And no one can help you if you don’t tell someone (even if it’s over and over again) how you feel. Don’t keep quiet. Talking takes the power away from the bully and starts to put it back in your control.

Focus on the positiveWhen individuals are being mean, it’s easy to start to feel like no one cares about us. It’s easy to start to focus on the negative and start to believe all of the mean words people are using to bring us down. Take a moment each day to think about the people you love and care about, and who love and care about you. Think about a nice thing someone said to you or the things that you are thankful for.

Role model being a good friend and classmate Just because a bully is acting inappropriately and hurting other people doesn’t mean you have to act that way as well. It feels good to be nice to others. Try giving someone a compliment or being nice to someone in class. It will make you feel better about yourself and others.

Betrayal in Balochistan

When the Taliban carry out a terrorist attack in Pakistan and claim responsibility for it, the government authorities tell them, “shut up. You didn’t do it. The Indians did it.” When the country’s security forces confirm that they have actually killed more than twenty people in Balochistan, the turbulent province in the southwest, the Baloch chief minister says, “C’mon! You didn’t do it. The Indians did it.”

In Pakistan, everyone says they have incontrovertible evidence about India’s involvement in destabilizing Balochistan. They only won’t share the evidence with you because they insist that when evidence is already too evident then why should one make the evident, evident? Hence, there is national consensus that the assumption that there is evidence should be taken as the evidence and journalists and human rights activists should stop asking for making the evidence evident.

This truly complicates the situation. Some might even find it funny but it is not. We are talking about a situation where dozens of people are losing their lives every day in extra judicial killings committed by the Pakistani security forces in the province of Balochistan. Since the government views them as ‘insurgents’ and ‘terrorists’, it does not bother to identify anyone of them or provide any accountability why alleged terrorists are not arrested and given a fair trial. A country where security forces kill fellow countrymen so indiscriminately and then flaunt over their extrajudicial actions certainly shames democracy.

What has gone wrong in Balochistan? A quick recap: General Musharraf (1999-2008) unleashed a military operation against the Baloch nationalists who wanted control over their province and its resources. President Asif Ali Zardari (2008-2013) procrastinated for five years while constantly promising to reconcile with the disgruntled Baloch separatists. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif (since 2013), falsely assuming that Zardari had already completed the reconciliation process, won the hearts and minds of the Baloch people, decided to take the supposed post-reconciliation period to the next level by empowering the Baloch middle class. He blundered: He picked up the wrong guy.

Dr. Abdul Malik, Sharif’s handpicked chief executive in Balochistan, mislead Islamabad in order to become the chief minister after the general elections of 2013. He took advantage of Sharif’s ignorance about the dynamics and the key players of the conflict in Balochistan and told Sharif that he was so connected in Balochistan that he could bring all the insurgents to the negotiation table. Sharif trusted him. The army endorsed him. Why? Because there was nobody else among the Baloch nationalists willing to talk to Islamabad. Most Baloch voters had boycotted the general election on the call of the separatist groups. In order to prove that the elections were successful and representative of all people’s vote, Sharif selected a man who overpromised to him and the army that he would end the insurgency.

Mr. Malik was the first chief minister in Balochistan’s tribal region who did not come from the tribal elite. He symbolized the educated middle class of the province. Some, including this writer, hoped that he would rewrite Balochistan’s history by challenging the Pakistani security forces and stoping the military operation in order to pave the way for a political resolution of the conflict. Some also hoped that he would fight in Islamabad against the forced disappearance of hundreds of activists who have allegedly been whisked away by the Pakistani intelligence. Some even naively hoped that he would bring to justice the government intelligence personnel who were accused for the murder of hundreds of political workers who were murdered in the government custody. The list of expectations from the new chief minister kept on rising as people also hoped that would develop Balochistan’s infrastructure during his term. None of this happened. The chief minister neither delivered to the promises he had made to Islamabad nor did he meet analysts’ expectations.

In order to make sure that he stayed in power in spite of all odds, the chief minister gave the Pakistani intelligence agencies a blank check to continue with the forced disappearances in Balochistan. He even did not utter a word when a 21-year old son of one of his old political comrades and now an exiled Baloch leader, Kachkol Ali, was whisked away from Karachi on August 30th, 2014. Mr. Ali had formerly served as the Leader of the Opposition during General Musharraf’s military rule in the Balochistan legislative assembly while, ironically, representing the current chief minister’s party, the National Party. Times have changed. Dr. Malik has ditched his old nationalist comrades in a desperate attempt to please the Pakistani military. The explosive province is under such a weak chief minister that when the army wants to say that there is no military operation going on, the chief minister is the one ready to deliver the message for them in the media and he even has a more sophisticated way to hide his incompetence and please Islamabad: The Indians are involved in stirring trouble in Balochistan. He literally said that this past weekend at a press conference in Lahore.

The army and Sharif also have to realize that they have chosen the wrong ally in Balochistan. Mr. Malik has been misinforming them about the intensity and the seriousness of the situation in Balochistan only to protect his own seat. There is growing, and often uncontrollable, anger among the people over the military operations being conducted across Balochistan. The chief minister does not protest nor does he convey people’s anger to Islamabad because the price for this could be his own job. But somebody has to communicate the right message. Interlocutors who lie and misinform for their own interests will exasperate an existing crisis.

Dr. Malik is not the political heavyweight who can persuade the pro-independent Balochistan leadership of the Baloch nationalist movement to trust Pakistan and initiate dialogue with them. He will not tell Islamabad that he is unable to manage the conflict. So, he just tells them that all is well when nearly nothing is well in Balochistan. Dr. Malik has become Balochistan’s Hamid Karzai. Neither he could bring the Taliban to the negotiation table nor could he sell the American values to the Taliban. In Balochistan, only one man, the chief minister, has benefited from the conflict between Islamabad and the Baloch separatists. He has betrayed both the sides without even making them notice. Who wouldn’t blame the Indians if the price is so awesome?
