AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule Out Of Stock At Apple Stores

airport extremeIf you were thinking about picking up either the AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule from Apple, you might be out of luck because according to a report from MacRumors, it seems that Apple’s stores in the US are no longer stocking the devices. Apparently Apple had requested for all stores to send the units back.

MacRumors got in touch with an Apple support rep who confirmed that the devices are no longer available from the stores, but the base stations will still be available online. In meantime if online ordering isn’t your thing, the smaller AirPort Express can be found in the stores, so you can opt for that if that works.

So why did Apple remove the devices? The company has yet to provide a reason, but MacRumors speculates that it could be due to an FCC deadline regarding router software security. “Starting June 2, 2016, permissive changes will not be permitted for devices approved under the old rules, unless they meet the requirements of the new rules. All devices partially or completely approved under the old rules cannot be marketed starting June 2, 2016 unless they meet the requirements of the new rules in all the bands of operation.”

We’re not sure what this means for the devices and their future, but they have been proven to be rather useful in the past, so hopefully Apple will release newer models that comply with the FCC’s new guidelines soon.

Samsung Shows Of 4K 5.5-inch Display Designed For VR

Samsung-4K-UHD-VR-displayIn the past it has been argued about the need for our phones to sport such high-resolution displays. After all at a certain point, our eyes are unable to tell the difference. For example could you really tell the difference between a QHD and a 4K smartphone display? We suppose if you were up close and personal, maybe you could tell the difference.

This is why while display resolution on our phones stops being so obvious at a certain point, the same cannot be said for virtual reality, where your eyes are literally a couple of inches away from the screen. As if to drive that point home, Samsung has recently shown off a 5.5-inch display that has a 4K resolution.

Before you think that this could be the screen for the next-gen Galaxy Note, it isn’t simply because this display, according to Samsung, is a prototype meant for VR. Not to mention Samsung’s more recent Galaxy Note is of the 5.7-inch variety, and it seems unlikely that Samsung would actually make the phone smaller.

According to Samsung, the 4K resolution in a 5.5-inch frame also means that it has a pixel density of 806ppi. However as noted by the folks at Upload VR, it appeared that refresh rate was a bit low, at least as far as VR is concerned, but then again like Samsung’s reps said, this is only a prototype.

North Carolina Community Takes on Anti-Muslim Activist

When anti-Muslim activist, Bill Warner, was invited to speak in Pinehurst, North Carolina, several residents decided to take action.

Most people familiar with Warner, who also goes by Bill French, are alarmed by his diatribe against Islam and Muslims. Warner is notorious for his work with his organization the Center for the Study of Political Islam and his book Shariah Law for Non-Muslims. Though the former university professor has no credentials in Islamic studies or related issues, he presents anti-Muslim lectures as scholarly conversations and not what they are: bigotry.

Warner gained notoriety in his opposition to the construction of the Murfreesboro mosque in Tennessee. Since then, he has likened Muslim women who wear headscarves to Ku Klux Klan members donning white hoods. He has criticized Muslim refugees’ resettlement in the United States and argued that only Christian refugees should be provided sanctuary. Warner has warned that Muslims can be “friendly” but cannot be a “friend” and has emphasized a “war on Islam” as a solution to the “problem of Islam.”

In response to his visit, Moore County residents Paula Irene DeCarlo and Yasemin Kan, organized a grassroots protest against Warner’s speech on May 15. A resident of Southern Pines and raised as a Catholic, Paula said she believes that youth can teach adults about diversity and peaceful co-existence. Her son employs music and creativity to defeat messages of hate. Yasemin, a native of Turkey and one of a few Muslim residents in Pinehurst, is dedicated to play her role in challenging the negative stereotypes of Muslims. Paula and Yasemin were joined by residents from other cities in their protest of Warner’s speech on May 15th. Some of the protesters represented organizations like Movement to End Racism and Islamophobia and Muslim American Public Affairs Council. Protesters held signs that depicted slogans, “No to Racism, No to Islamophobia” or “To Learn the Truth About Islam, Ask a Muslim.”

The Pilot, a Pinehurst-based newspaper, published criticism about Warner’s visit. In an op-ed on May 14, Michael Pritchett said the decision to host the anti-Muslim activist is in direct opposition to the group’s stated values:

“I’m disappointed to see that an organization such as the Moore Republican Women’s group is supporting such hate speech despite listing on the front page of their website that one of their core beliefs is ‘equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity for all, regardless of race, creed, sex, age or disability.’ How is hosting this controversial speaker holding true to your core Republican values when you are intentionally denigrating an entire group of people for their religious beliefs?”

Moore County Democrats organized a non-partisan discussion on Islamophobia and racism one day after Warner’s visit to Pinehurst. Open to all, this event allowed Moore County residents to learn about Islamophobia, its connection to anti-Black racism and other forms of oppression, and offered strategies to defeat this oppression. A similar event against Islamophobia was organized at Congregational Church of Pinehurst on May 22. Congregants of the church, members of Moore County NAACP and grassroots activists offered their perspectives on how to fight Islamophobia. Veteran civil rights leader and North Carolina NAACP legal advisor, Al McSurely, offered perspectives from the HKonJ (Historic Thousands on Jones Street) Movement in building a broad-based movement that challenges racism, inequality, sexism, attacks on workers, Islamophobia, nativism, and other injustices. Launched in 2007, HKonJ has been replicated in many states across the country and led to the rise of the Moral Monday Movement in North Carolina in 2012.

What started as a depressing episode of Warner’s visit to North Carolina turned into a rallying call for a movement against all forms of bigotry and oppression. People from different backgrounds and separated in geography, united to fight anti-Muslim bigotry and intertwine this campaign with other social justice movements.

Fanny Lou Hamer’s words rang true as the community mobilized against bigotry: “Nobody’s free until everybody’s free!”

Anti-Trump Protest In San Diego Ends In Fights, Arrests

A Donald Trump rally in San Diego resulted in clashes Friday night between anti-Trump protesters, Trump supporters and police, leading to at least a dozen arrests.

Thousands of people converged at the San Diego Convention Center, where the presumptive Republican presidential candidate was speaking. As Trump supporters left the venue around 5 p.m., protesters confronted them.

Police with batons drawn moved to separate the two sides and hold a barrier, which protesters breached. After some people threw bottles and began fighting, police declared the gathering an unlawful assembly and ordered everyone to disperse. It then became a misdemeanor to remain in the area, and police had cleared it by about an hour later.

Officials said 18 people had “received medical attention at the area,” according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The San Diego Police Department reported making about a dozen arrests, but did not specify how many.

The SDPD did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Police hit some protesters with little balls containing pepper spray, according to reports. Police have not yet confirmed they used the chemical irritant.

Trump weighed in on the clashes and police response on Twitter.

Trump’s proposal to build a wall to keep out immigrants carries additional significance in San Diego, an increasingly bicultural city on the U.S.-Mexico border. Many protesters brandished Mexican flags, condemning Trump’s positions on immigration and race.

Trump supporters and protesters have clashed regularly, and often violently, during his presidential campaign stops — most recently in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where police threw smoke grenades at protesters.

Trump’s San Diego rally was one of several campaign stops in California ahead of the state’s June 7 primary.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Why You Need to Experience EDC New York

It’s been two weeks since I had my first experience under the electric sky and the only question I have in mind is what took me so long to attend the ultimate party?

The Electric Daisy Carnival is one of the biggest electronic music festivals on the planet. The event made it’s east coast debut in 2012 and there has been no looking back for one of the most anticipated gatherings celebrated by ravers worldwide. As soon as I entered the front gates of the Citi Field parking lot on May 14th, I knew I was going to leave EDC with memories that would last me a lifetime. Over the course of a weekend, people were fully allowed to express themselves with a wide variety of eye-catching outfits. I saw trolls, wizards and fairy kings. Birds that talked. Fish that sang. I pretty much got to see the opening credits of David the Gnome in human form. It was a true childhood dream come true.

Forget Six Flags. You haven’t lived until you ride an enormous Ferris Wheel while Dada Life’s “Last Night on Earth” is blasting in the background only to see thousands of people bopping up and down while waving colorful flags and exchanging kandi bracelets. This is what life is about my friends.

How about dancing your butt off to Afrojack’s “Ten Feet Tall” while a gigantic freaking owl watches over your every Melbourne Shuffle? Talk about an adrenaline rush. I still can’t get the image of that enormous owl out of my head. While the promoters of EDC refer to the fans as the headliners of the party, I am committed to the idea that the owl was the real MVP.

There wasn’t a greater feeling on Earth than yelling ‘FREE KESHA’ on the top of my lungs with a can of Blue Moon in hand while Zedd played his latest mix of “True Colors” featuring the animal queen herself. It was one of the many highlights I had throughout the course of my stay at the most lit carnival to ever grace NYC.

Where else can you mingle and shoot the breeze with some of your favorite DJs without a single care in the world? I had the pleasure of chatting with the legendary Paul Oakenfold after he rocked the tent in the circuitGROUNDS area. I thanked him for making my high school years tolerable. He responded by saying that I had a great heart. I’m still trying to figure out if he was talking about the one inside my body or the one I wore on a chain. Either way, it was a high compliment from a guy that was voted the best DJ in the world in 1998 and 1999 by DJ Magazine.

I am a believer that a person should never live a life with regret. I honestly feel that if you do not go to EDC at least once in your lifetime you are missing out on the opportunity to feel something unlike anything you have ever felt before. I encourage you to be brave and possibly step outside your comfort zone. The EDM culture cannot be explained. You can only understand it by immersing yourself with the positive vibes of people who are seeking the same things you are looking for. And if your heart is true, then you will find them too.

Those are all the David the Gnome references I have for now. If you are feeling like a free spirit and want to take a sweet escape, EDC comes to Las Vegas for three consecutive days starting June 17th. I wanna runaway (just U & I.) Who’s with me?

This Minivan-Sized Sea Sponge Is Thought To Be Planet's Largest

Scientists exploring a deep swath of ocean in the Hawaiian archipelago got an unexpected surprise when they stumbled across a monstrous bottom-dwelling creature.

Earthlings, soak in the largest sponge ever recorded — and what scientists say could very well be one of the planet’s oldest living animals.

The discovery, made last summer by a team of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists aboard the agency’s 224-foot Okeanos Explorer, is documented in a report published this week in the journal Marine Biodiversity.

The sponge was found in Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, a World Heritage Site, at a depth of 7,000 feet. It measured roughly 12 feet long, 7 feet tall and 5 feet wide — about the size of a minivan.

Daniel Wagner, a NOAA research specialist and co-leader of the expedition, said “finding such an enormous and presumably old sponge emphasizes how much can be learned from studying deep and pristine environments,” including Papahānaumokuākea.

Previously, the largest documented sponge was one discovered in 1887 off the coast of western Canada in less than 100 feet of water, according to the report. That sponge was comparable in length to the one found northwest of the main Hawaiian Islands, but not nearly as tall or wide.

Wagner and co-author Christopher Kelley note in their report that some marine sponges have been estimated to live more than 2,300 years and attain massive sizes, “providing key ecosystem services such as filtering large amounts of seawater, as well as providing important habitat to a myriad of invertebrate and microbial species.”

The recent discovery, they wrote, “underscores the need to protect this area using the highest conservation measures available.”
