Our Homonormativity Problem

“Did we spend our whole lives crawling out of one box, just to crawl into another?” Sol says, turning to his soon-to-be husband, Robert, on the critically-acclaimed Netflix show, Grace and Frankie.

Sol asks this of Robert, after a recent feud where Sol’s very interpretation of what it means to be gay is questioned. While the two were doing a tasting for their upcoming wedding, Sol finds out that Robert slept with one of the men catering the tasting some twelve years before. Sol is momentarily devastated, thinking he had been Robert’s one-and-only for the better part of the past two decades.

“What’s the point of being gay,” one of the men asks on his way out. “If you can’t shed the conventions of a heterosexual life?”

This conflict, in many ways, has represented the inner conflict of my mid- to late-twenties, and perhaps a sexual, emotional, and social conflict that plagues many young, gay men of my generation: just because I’ve been labeled and placed in a different box, does it mean I need to act like it?

I, too, would have responded like Sol, upset by the threat to the sanctity of my partnership, anxious at the thought of having to assimilate new information into the mental model I had already built with my partner. But not every gay man feels that way. In fact, many that fall into the homonormative definition of gay would feel otherwise. I’m reminded of one such occasion just months ago, when I realized just how palpable these differences of opinion were when I found myself surrounded by a group of men at a party, most of whom were gay.

One of the young men, tall and handsome with dirty blonde hair and dark brown eyes, smiled at a group of his friends, bragged about his latest sexual conquests on his most recent trip to the Caribbean. He proclaimed, in detail, about the number of partners he’d been with, the amount of drugs he’d consumed, and his overall stamina over the course of his stay. His fellow gays looked upon him with jealousy, trying to share their own stories. I laughed along, too, feeling disingenuous, uncomfortable, but all the while, wondering why I felt so. Was it because I was jealous, as well? Did I need to be sexually liberated?

Was there was something wrong with the way I was being gay?

I’ve found myself in these situations before, and each time, I find myself reacting differently. Generally, each of my reactions come from the same root causes: feelings of inferiority and shame that reside deep underneath my visage. I’ve found myself rarely able to fit in amongst a group of gay men for these very reasons: I’m not promiscuous enough, I don’t do a lot of drugs, or because I prefer to talk about topics other than my sexual exploits. It is within these moments that I find myself in the aforementioned inner conflict, that I feel I am faced with a decision: What kind of gay do I want to be? Am I doing this whole thing wrong?

It’s ironic, really, that some years and years later, in an era where marriage equality is now a national mandate and where gay couples are more out and proud than ever, that to be a gay man is being still distilled down to one limited definition, that gay culture is falling into the same trap that heteronormative America has fallen into.

Only this time, it’s a homonormative trap.

From what I understand, the idea of homonormativity is a relatively new concept. In some cases, it is defined as the adoption of heterosexual values into homosexual relationships. But in others, it’s an elite microcultural definition of the ideal and supreme gay man, the one who stays fit and beautiful. And it’s disconcerting to witness a group of people — a group of people that I once understood (and still understand) to be so marginalized — to be just as elitist as their discriminators some twenty years or more prior.

It was these questions I’ve shared and the story I told that all converged while watching Grace and Frankie, that caused a rush of emotions to converge over Sol’s poignant question: Are we just crawling from one box into another?

Perhaps we are, but maybe that’s not entirely a bad thing. To a certain extent, crawling into a “box” is necessary. By labeling ourselves, it gives us an identity. I am proud to call myself “gay,” even if that means something a bit different than what many of my other gay counterparts define it as. But that still leaves the question, if we’re crawling into a box, then what’s the point?

To me, there is no “point.” Identity does not exist simply for its own sake. Instead, this understanding of oneself — of defining who we are — only helps us to understand one another better. Such is the case with being gay. There is no “point” to it, per se. It simply is a part of our identity — albeit a very important part — one that helps to define our way of being, thinking, and interacting with the world around us.

And if we take this perspective on homosexuality, and perhaps even on sexuality and identity in general, then we’ll see that all of our individual identities, these little boxes in and out of which we crawl, interlock with everyone else’s — much like the honeycombs of a beehive — working together towards the common goal of being seen, valued, heard, and loved simply for having the courage to be human and do so in our own “box.”

As a result, who am I to judge another man’s sexual exploits? Who am I to sit here and say that one box is right and the other is wrong? I’m in no place to make those judgments.

But likewise, I’d like to be able to sit in my box, without being judged either.

9 Social Media Marketing Tools That are Transforming Their Industries

By itself, social media is a powerful tool. Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram empower both startups and established brands to connect with customers in an environment that’s friendly and highly engaging.

However, a growing suite of social media marketing tools are enabling brands to maximize the utility of social media.

These Nine Tools are Changing Online Marketing

Social media marketing is a rapidly developing specialty that transforms itself on a regular basis. Though it’s becoming difficult to imagine marketing without social media, we must remember that social media has only become familiar within the past 10 to 15 years.

It’s essential to take advantage of every tool and learning opportunity you have. You need to identify what does and does not work for your brand.

Here are nine tools that are expanding the reach and effectiveness of social media marketing.

1. Quill Engage

As anyone who’s worked with Google Analytics knows, it’s one of the deepest reporting tools available. This can also make it a challenge to find exactly what you’re looking for, however.

There’s simply too much data and too many options to choose from. This is where Quill Engage comes in. It’s a free tool that connects to your Google Analytics account and sends you weekly summaries of the data.

In terms of social media, Quill Engage enables you to see where your traffic is coming from, which posts have performed best (that is, in driving traffic to landing pages), as well as other critical analytical data.

This will save a lot of time and help you to get just the information you need the most.

2. KingSumo

As you probably know, headlines are of paramount importance for driving traffic to your website or blog. The right headline can potentially mean hundreds and even thousands more conversions — even if the blog post’s content remains unchanged. You can’t afford to merely guess which title is going to be the best.

KingSumo is a tool that makes A/B testing and headline selection easy. This plugin gives you the option of creating multiple test headlines for your blog posts, up to ten at a time, and then it rotates these headlines to show which ones perform the best.

Based on this information, over time the winning headline will get featured the most often. Using the data from KingSumo, you can adjust the headlines you choose to run when you share content on Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms.

3. Real Geeks

Sometimes the best tools are the ones that are geared to a specific industry or purpose. There’s nothing wrong with general tools — and that’s what the majority of tools on this list are — but the more specific a tool can be, the more value it will yield for the end user.

So we have to include Real Geeks on this list. Real Geeks has a Facebook marketing tool that’s killing it right now. The tool is designed for real-estate agents, and it allows users to streamline the ad creation process.

Normally, the process of creating a quality Facebook ad takes an agent anywhere from 25 to 30 minutes. Armed with Real Geeks, the same level of amazing ads can be developed in just three to five minutes. The tool also offers robust reporting features that track your ad performance.

4. Canva

As everyone knows, visual content is key to engagement on social media. In order to make finding and using visual content easier, many marketers have turned to Canva. This tool offers an array of templates that can make even the most inexperienced designer look like an expert. It’s an absolute lifesaver if you can’t afford to hire a professional.

5. Bundle Post

One of the toughest aspects of social media is that it doesn’t ever allow you to stop. In order to remain relevant, you have to push content constantly.

This typically means a massive time investment, which is unrealistic when you have other facets of your business to run. Enter Bundle Post.

When you have Bundle Post, you can schedule several days’ worth of posts, shares, and curated content in just minutes. In fact, many people are able to schedule three to five days’ worth of posts in less than half an hour.

As a result, you can spend more time engaging users and less time having to compose content.

6. IFTTT

This is without a doubt one of the coolest tools out there … and it wasn’t even designed with social media in mind. IFTTT stands for “If this, then that” and is often described as the Swiss Army Knife of digital productivity.

IFTTT is an app that allows users to connect other apps. Simply input the “if” variable, then establish a “then” variable. The result is automation between unique processes.

For example: “IF I post something on Facebook, THEN send out the same post in tweet form.” The options are nearly endless. The program currently works with more than 300 different apps so it makes social media management much more efficient.

7. Tagboard

If custom hashtags play a substantial role in your social media campaigns, you’ll undoubtedly find Tagboard valuable. This tool acts as a search engine that lets you register your custom hashtags in order to see mentions and other content across pretty much any social platform. That will save a lot of time and ensure you don’t miss anything.

8. Feedly

Content curation is a big portion of social media success, but the time it takes to find content often outweighs the returns. The key is to reduce the amount of time it takes.

This is exactly what Feedly does. It streamlines the content curation process by organizing all relevant articles, blogs, videos, and websites into a single platform that you can quickly browse.

Since Twitter and Facebook share features that integrate directly into the platform, it’s a simple matter to engage your audience in a timely manner.

9. Inkybee

One of the most fruitful activities in social media is finding other influencers and forging partnerships with them. This increases the odds they’ll share your content, which benefits your business in the long run.

The tricky part is identifying and connecting with the right people. This is where Inkybee helps. This tool assists in searching for bloggers and influencers in your industry and ranks them based on visibility, engagement, relevance, and more.

Using this information, you can tailor your outreach strategy so it yields the maximum benefits. You can also save lists and return to them at a later date.

Are You Using the Right Tools?

Investing in social media without using any tools is similar to buying an apartment but not putting any furniture in it. You can still use the apartment — i.e., social media — but you won’t get anywhere close to maximizing its potential.

In the coming days, ask yourself the question: “Am I using the right tools?” If the answer is no, or at best “I’m not sure,” then explore various opportunities that could enhance your social media marketing strategy.

You may find some of the tools on the above list valuable, but there are hundreds of other solutions that could help move you in the right direction. The possibilities are almost endless … but make sure you aren’t overlooking the growing suite of social media marketing tools that are currently on the market.

They’ll fundamentally transform your strategy for the better.

Combat Dreams Haunting Veterans Could Be A New Disorder

A 39-year-old man with no significant medical history sleepwalks, sleep-talks, and snores loudly.  He kicks and punches the air during the night — and sometimes hits at his wife, one time bruising her face. What’s the diagnosis?

Wait, one more thing: all this started after he returned from a 12-month deployment during the Iraq War in 2007. Now, what’s the diagnosis?

It’s not any sleep disorder that’s currently in the books, according to one military sleep doctor. Col. Vincent Mysliwiec, a sleep-medicine specialist for the U.S. Army, thinks that cases like the one described comprise a new syndrome, which he calls Trauma-Associated Sleep Disorder, or TSD.

“This disorder has some similarities with both Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and REM Behavior Disorder (RBD), in which people act out their dreams, but it does not respond to the characteristic treatment for either of those,” he told The Huffington Post. “Most importantly, it’s observed among young veterans who were deployed in active combat.”

Mysliwiec, who is based at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, began observing hard-to-classify sleep disturbances among veterans returning from Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan around 2008. He outlined the diagnostic criteria for TSD in a 2014 article in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine.

Most TSD sufferers don’t experience daytime symptoms, like flashbacks, which are a hallmark of PTSD. The drug Clonazepam, which treats PTSD, is ineffective on TSD symptoms. And unlike in RBD, the nightmares in this syndrome are usually replays of a traumatic combat experience, rather than generalized scary dreams.

Mysliwiec hopes that if the American Academy of Sleep Medicine accepts this diagnosis, more resources can be directed towards its study and treatment.

“Classifying something is the best way to evaluate it,” he said.

Mysliwiec has observed about 20 cases firsthand so far, but he estimates there are thousands more who are undiagnosed nationwide. TSD sufferers have responded well to a drug called Prazosin, which treats hypertension. They have also seen improvements with cognitive behavioral therapy and sleep hygiene interventions, like instituting regular sleep and wake times.

After combing through the historical record, Mysliwiec suspects that veterans he served in earlier wars had the same condition. “A Civil War veteran was observed to exhibit ‘dream-enacting behavior’ and scrounging for food in his sleep, and there are similar reports of sleepwalking among World War II veterans,” he said.

Veterans suffer from a host of sleep disorders, so it can be tough to disentangle the symptoms of one from the other.

If TSD is accepted as a standalone condition, its diagnosis would still be complicated. Veterans suffer from a host of sleep disorders, so it can be tough to disentangle the symptoms of one from the other. For instance, they’re four times as likely as other Americans to suffer from obstructive sleep apnea. Plus, many patients never realize they have TSD, since it happens during sleep, Mysliwiec said. Spouses have generated a lot of his referrals. So single veterans may never realize they have a problem.

The study Mysliwiec conducted is also limited, with just four cases.

“This report contains a case series of just four individuals, all of whom are men and all of whom are on the younger side,” said Dr. Raj Dasgupta, a USC professor and Fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. “We definitely need a broader study.” He pointed out that several of the patients in the cases were on prescription medications and one had a history of alcoholism — all of which complicates their diagnoses.

Still, Dasgupta thinks that further study may confirm the idea of a veteran-specific sleep disorder. “We already know that war can literally change the brain, so I would not be surprised if active combat uniquely affects veterans’ sleep,” he said.

Mysliwiec is grateful for the extent to which the military supports his research work, thanks to a renewed focus on sleep and wellness within the Army.

Soldiers used to view sleep “the enemy of productivity, the enemy of vigilance, the enemy of being able to outlast our adversaries,” Maj. Gen. David Wilmot, the Deputy Surgeon General for Army National Guard told the National Sleep Foundation in 2014.

“People are more aware of sleep now, which is a good thing,” Mysliwiec said. “The challenge is that, even if the culture changes, the Army’s mission doesn’t actually change. Combat is as stressful as ever. So when we try to square these two goals, we have to deal with the disorders that arise from the clash.”

Trump: The GOP's Creation

American voters are fed up with politicians. Seemingly, they do not trust and will oppose anyone who is a professional politician. Why?

Thank you, GOP for shutting down Congress these past eight years. Of course, if Congress doesn’t work, the public faults its occupants, all of them, “politicians” of both political stripes regardless of party affiliation or accountability.

Then again, it’s not just the legislative branch you have given a bad name. You’ve thrown so much mud (Obamacare, IRS, Benghazi) against our democracy’s wall that, despite your failure to prove any executive branch improprieties, much of that mud has stuck, at least in the minds of your stalwarts. All the while, you’ve ceaselessly chanted your mantra: “government isn’t the solution, it’s the problem.” And you’ve set out to make it so, to fulfill your prophecy by cutting taxes, particularly for the rich, while defunding programs and agencies you don’t like – like EPA and IRS, to name just two – making it difficult for them to do their jobs properly and then pointing the finger at them when they stumble for lack of funding.

You’ve damaged our economy by failing to fund the rebuilding of our infrastructure and provide support for public education and research which would have cost practically nothing given rock-bottom interest rates in recent years.

No wonder Joe Q Public is looking to Trump, an outsider, anyone who is not a seasoned politician, to hand the reins of government. You’re just lucky that Trump happened to declare himself a Republican. Now look what you’ve done. Are you proud of yourselves? Deep down, while a tad nervous, you probably are happy because what you are all about has little to do with promoting the welfare of our nation; rather it’s about little more than gaining and controlling the reins of power. Even though Trump is an unbroken, wild colt, in the end, you figure you’ll be able to break him. Shame on you!!

Arthur Fox, a Washingon, DC, public interest litigator, has devoted his career to working within the union movement to assist democratic-minded union leaders, members and dissident organizations.

Fix Mideast Water Crisis to Advance Peace Process

By Munqeth Mehyar, Nader Khateeb, and Gidon Bromberg (EcoPeace Middle East)

Despite continuing disputes over settlements, Jerusalem, borders, and refugees, there is at least one problem on which Arabs and Israelis can still make progress–water.

Much hard work lies ahead. The World Economic Forum has identified water issues, from drought to polluted water, as the biggest threat to the planet over the next decade. Nowhere on the globe do these issues pose greater risks than in the Middle East.

In our region, water is not only scarce but often contaminated as well. The aquifer below the Gaza Strip is so overexploited that seawater is now seeping into it, leaving fresh water in very short supply. Some 1.8 million Palestinians in Gaza have run out of potable water.

Large amounts of sewage are released untreated, compounding the problem. An astounding 90 million liters of raw sewage from Gaza is being dumped into the Mediterranean every day. This risks causing an outbreak of pandemic diseases such as cholera and typhoid, not only in Gaza, but in Egypt and Israel as well.

2016-05-26-1464284043-4793297-AlexanderZomerRiver.jpg
A stream contaminated with sewage, called Zommer by Palestinians and Alexander by Israelis, flows from Nablus in the West Bank and enters the Mediterranean Sea near Netanya.

Look to models of regional collaboration

Instead of a doomsday scenario there can be a win-win solution, but only if we act now. Fortunately we have successful models of regional collaboration on water issues to look to.

Ten years ago, the Jordan River was about to run dry. But since 2007, concerted regional action led by Israeli, Palestinian, and Jordanian mayors has made significant progress towards rehabilitating the Jordan River.

The mayors are collaborating to turn what was once an open sewer into a water bank, having come to understand the economic benefits that a rejuvenated river system would bring to their respective communities.

Water banking has precedents in the region. Following the signing of the Jordan-Israel peace treaty in 1994, Jordan now stores winter runoff from the Yarmouk River in the Sea of Galilee in Israel, and then gets it back in the summer. This shows how prior enemies can create positive interdependence once they start trusting each other.

These successes suggest that additional progress is possible. Indeed, in 2015 Israel doubled the amount of water it sold to Gaza and supplied water to the new Palestinian city of Rawabi following years of delay. But more needs to be done.

2016-05-26-1464284430-5487641-Freshwater_LJR_2013.jpg

In 2013, connected with rehabilitation work by Israeli, Palestinian, and Jordanian mayors, fresh water flowed into the lower Jordan River for the first time in 50 years.

Palestinians need their fare share of water

For the first time in history, thanks to conservation, desalination, and reuse of wastewater for agriculture, one country in the Middle East enjoys a water surplus–Israel.

An agreement to share water between Israelis and Palestinians is achievable. Water is no longer a zero-sum game. While in the past sharing water more fairly between Israelis and Palestinians would have meant less water for Israeli agriculture, advances in wastewater reuse and desalination mean that a water deal would not require cutting Israeli supplies.

Palestinians need to receive their fair allocation of shared water resources. To move forward, both sides must stop holding water issues hostage to a broader Middle East peace agreement.

And with careful management, Israel can work with its neighbors to clean up the mess of untreated sewage on its borders and shores.

Fixing the problem is in Israel’s own interest. It would prevent Gaza’s sewage from polluting Tel Aviv, and West Bank sewage from polluting the shared mountain aquifer and cross-border streams.

Three steps that would benefit everyone

Recently in Brussels, the Ad Hoc Liaison Committee on the Palestinian economy held its bi-annual meeting, bringing the Israeli and Palestinian governments together with the international community. For the first time, the committee identified water and energy for Gaza and the West Bank as urgent issues. This is an important achievement, signaling the willingness of the international community to help the parties move forward on resolving their water issues.

It is critical that this acknowledgment results in concrete action. Such action should be taken now, even in the absence of a broader peace process.

There are three measures that both sides should implement, and that the international community should encourage–measures that are in the interests of both Palestinians and Israelis.

For starters, Israel should again double the amount of potable water it sells to Gaza. The Palestinians are prepared to pay for it, and they desperately need it.

Second, a wastewater plant in Gaza–built under the leadership of the World Bank–should be opened. It alone would treat a third of the raw sewage currently being released into the Mediterranean. Opening the plant requires Israel to supply the electricity needed to operate it, and the Palestinians to pay for it.

Finally, Israel must also provide more water to the thirstiest towns in the West Bank, based on full utilization of a new water pipeline funded by US taxpayers. A thirsty neighbor can never be a good neighbor. This would not be charity–until a final agreement on water is reached, the Palestinians are willing to pay for these urgently needed supplies.

Like no other issue, solving water and sanitation problems can improve the lives of every Palestinian and Israeli. Progress can help restore faith in the peace process—water is one of the five final-status issues. Action on water builds the type of cooperation needed so desperately in the Middle East.

Munqeth Mehyar, Nader Khateeb, and Gidon Bromberg are, respectively, the Jordanian, Palestinian, and Israeli co-directors of EcoPeace Middle East, an organization leading peace efforts through diplomacy on water issues.

Founded in 1994, EcoPeace Middle East is the only non-governmental association that brings together Israelis, Palestinians, and Jordanians. Over the course of 22 years, EcoPeace has shown that people can work together to solve environmental challenges in the Middle East. The organization has helped leverage over US$500 million of investments in water supply and sanitation solutions, helped protect cultural landscapes of value to world heritage, and helped reform water policies leading to the release of fresh water into the Jordan River for the first time in 50 years.

Kentucky Declares Clinton Democratic Primary Winner After Recanvass

WASHINGTON, May 26 (Reuters) – A recanvass of Kentucky’s Democratic presidential primary results found Hillary Clinton won the contest by 1,911 votes, Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Grimes said on Thursday.

Clinton’s rival for the party’s nomination, Senator Bernie Sanders, had requested a recount in the razor-close contest earlier this week. Grimes, in posts on Twitter, said the results of the recanvass would be certified by the state’s Board of Elections on May 31.

Connect to Confidence Recap

This article previously appeared in and appears courtesy of She’s Fit to Lead. It was written by Kerry Silverman, a She’s Fit to Lead contributor.

After first hearing about the Connect to Confidence conference back in the fall, I was nothing but excited to see all the hard work and operations of She’s Fit to Lead make this event a reality. Waiting a long couple of months for this day to come around, it was more than I even expected. Filled with words of wisdom from inspirational women speakers and a wide variety of #STOREFRONT products, it is safe to say that I am not alone when I say the first annual Connect to Confidence event was an enormous success. Here are some of the most memorable aspects of the conference.

Speakers

Ranging from venture capitalists to registered dietitians, these leading ladies spoke about their own personal experiences on their journeys to success and focused on empowering women to be their truest, most confident selves in and out of the workplace.

#STOREFRONT

Placed in the entrance of the event, #STOREFRONTS debuted products and samples from sponsons and female entrepreneurs featured on She’s Fit to Lead. Ranging from yummy goods like Baked By Melissa Cupcakes and jewelry from Little Words Project and EmJohn, it was any girl’s dream.

Networking

With so many women in various professions, the ability to network is endless. What’s so great about She’s Fit to Lead is the endless opportunities to connect with some of the most prestigious women in the working world.

Location

With the conference held in NYC, it was a prime location for our speakers, writers, and storefront vendors to get to. Held at the Middle Collegiate Church in the East Village, the venue and area itself was filled with culture. Let’s see where next year takes us!

Being surrounded by such inspirational women

Hearing the road to success from the panelists and even being around women from all over the country was such a humbling experience. Being surrounded by other women who are trying to break the glass ceiling was so inspiring, as myself and many of the young women that attended the conference are entering the work force in the near future.

Swag bags

Filled with yummy snacks and gifts from our generous sponsors and speakers, this was one of the many perks of attending the conference.

Why the Chewbacca Mom Got to Me Too

2016-05-26-1464275197-9310767-Screenshot23.png

Ok admit it, you finally did watch the video of the mom in her car putting on a Chewbacca mask and laughing her head off.

You needed to know what the fuss was all about.

So you watched it, feeling a bit anxious that you might not “get it,” and then saw that it was exactly what they were all saying it was. Just a mom laughing at a silly moment.

You may have felt disappointed that there wasn’t more to it than that.

But there actually is more to it than that, isn’t there?

Something about that video makes us feel a combination of joy, empathy, laughter, embarrassment, and let’s just admit it, slight envy.

Why is that? Do we all wish we had a Chewbacca mask too? No, it’s not that, is it. If it was, sales of the wookie mask would have skyrocketed.

I watched Candace Payne when she met Star Wars director J.J. Abrams and her interview with James Corden. She’s funny and charming as she chats and explains the whole story about the Chewbacca mask and making the video. But the envy we all feel watching her laugh behind her mask is not about her sudden fame.

The thing is, she is completely authentic, and is not in the least bit afraid to be herself.

She sits across from James Corden like she has just as much a right to be there as anyone else. She doesn’t pretend to be anyone else — she’s the mom who filmed herself laughing at herself and that’s it.

She is 100% genuine.

Imagine if you were that authentic in front of the world. Imagine if you just let your guard down and decided to project the image of exactly who you are, no holds barred?

You want to wear a crazy, silly mask? Flaunt it. Who cares what people think?

That’s why the video went viral. We saw this woman being so completely genuine with zero embarrassment and we loved her for it.

We want to be like her — but getting our own wookie mask isn’t going to do it.

In fact we need to remove our masks — the masks we wear every day, to act “normal” and “appropriate.”

And then, when we do, we need to laugh our heads off like we don’t care what anyone thinks.

When you boldly go where no one has gone before, there are a few things you can count on. Number one: you forgot something. Perhaps it was your toothbrush, your fuzzy socks, or your bath towel. Now, you’re going to have live without it for the duration. As long as the thing you failed to acquire before leaving the planet wasn’t your life-saving medication, any and all forms of deodorant, or your spouse’s permission, you’ll find a way to survive it. Two: no matter where in the known Universe you wander, as long as you are still in contact with Earth, the media will find you. Don’t be fooled into thinking that high-speed interstellar travel exempts you from this effect. Planetary gravitational fields can be escaped. Newtonian mechanics, bypassed. Fold up spacetime like a pocketbook and slip through the galvanized grip of matter and energy; the instant you emerge the media will be there waiting for you, lurking casually in your email/twitter feed/blog space or streaming in via the Public Affairs Office. I say this AS a trained, card-carrying, and intermittently proud a member of the media. It’s our job to be there anytime news breaks. Broken laws (civic or physical), broken hearts, and broken records are our specialty. If there’s an interesting story in the offing, expect us there. Please and thank you.

Lastly, since the internet exists, if you do something figuratively or literally outlandish there’s one more thing you can expect: the palpable, if incorporeal, presence of the public. From a space-exploration standpoint, that’s good! We’re up here for the the betterment of the species, after all. We’d bring you all with us, but there’s not that much room in the dome. Plus, someone needs to keep the trains running on time back on Earth, etc. The best we can do to bring you with us without bending the laws of physics to the breaking point is to speak to you from afar. To that end, when the 8-month HI-SEAS crew “returned to Earth” last year, they opened up a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” chat. That produced a lively discussion. If we were back on the blue planet, we would probably be doing the same right about now.

Suffice it to say, we’re still Mars-bound. We overtook the last crew’s record weeks ago and are coasting onwards toward the finish line, some 95 days from now. Irrespective of our Red-Planet status, the “Ask Me Anything” light is green. A Reddit user submitted a request addressed to “someone on the HI-SEAS IV crew”, which our Earthside mission control passed onto us. We’ll be doing our best to answer the post questions in a timely fashion. If we really were on Mars right now, timely would be a 9-minute minimum. Mars is nearly in conjunction – lined up from the perspective of the Sun – with the Earth. In about five days, your planet and ours will be the closest we’ve been in a decade. That will bring communication time down to just over 4 minutes each way. So walk outside sometime this week and wave. Or, leave us a question on AMA. Or write to us on our blogs (write here, for example). Any way you choose to ask a Martian your question, we’ll be pleased to answer it. We like it when people say hi. It makes us feel human.

You Can End Barbaric Yulin Dog Meat Festival: Update 2016

NOTE: Graphic images.

Chinese activists rescue 200 dogs from the exceptionally-brutal Asian dog meat trade weeks before the 2016 Yulin Dog Meat Festival. They stayed three days until the dogs were negotiated for release, though sadly 20 dogs were already found dead inside.

NOTE: 2016 UPDATES from last year’s post. The Barbaric Yulin Dog Meat Festival is scheduled in China once again this June despite worldwide outrage, loud global social media coverage and despite 100,000 Chinese citizens and their furry friends protesting the event inside China.

Because of the sustained pressure, the number of dogs killed for the dog-eating event has dropped approximately 80% according to Animals Asia (a group working to end the festival and the broader dog and cat meat trade in Asia) and that means the number of dogs murdered in the most gruesome ways possible has dropped from 10,000 to 2,000 which is still 2,000 too many.

The information below on Yulin’s festival still holds and today there is even more relevant information on the topic. It’s literally all over the internet. Please join your voice in opposition to this event; especially as it nears.

Last year Huffington Post reader’s helped spur an anti-Yulin Festival petition sponsored by the non-profit Duo Duo Animal Welfare Project that has recently reached 2 million US signatures – the largest in Change.org’s history – along with another Canadian-based one with 5 millions names. These kinds of huge numbers make news and officials do learn about them.

The organizers of the Yulin Dog Meat Festival — and all animal abusers in all countries, including here in the United States – can run, but in the newly connected world order, they can no longer hide.

#StopYulin2016, #StopYulin, #StopYulinForever,

**********************************************************

The world is full of cruel, barbaric acts and images — what with ISIS beheading people on video and human traffickers said to sell more people into slavery than in the 19th century. Some of this we can do little about as one single person, despite our hope to the contrary.

Yet, one inhumane tradition happens each summer in southern China that can be stopped — and must be stopped — with voices from you and I. It is as simple as 1+1+1 = the tsunamia of social media.

Each June 21, the Yulin Dog Meat Festival takes place in Guangxi province. It is real, despite local government protests to the contrary. In it, the meat from thousands of dogs and cats are consumed.

These nearly 10,000 sentient animals arrive to Yulin in appalling conditions — often stuffed into cages and dragged on poles — and the manner in which they’re killed, skinned and eaten is horrific, with many clubbed, burned, electrocuted and some skinned alive, according to local activist reports. It is simply torture.

The people of Yulin have celebrated the Summer Solstice with this festival since the 1990’s, and use the dog and cat meat to eat with lychees and drink grain alcohol. They do not consider any of the above conditions an issue, not even the way the animals arrive or are killed, cooked and consumed.

Animal rights groups and activitists for years have been trying to stop the festivities. Yet, despite huge social media protest inside China, it’s scheduled to happened again this June.

Just recently, Twitter globally alit with the horrifying images of the event with hopes to shame and put pressure on local authorities to stop the festival.

Learn what you can about this event. CNN has done some good reporting on it. Other media outlets have, as well.

Keep up the pressure! Western consumers of Chinese products and Chinese tourism have a good deal of power. Let us use it.
