How I Fell in Love With My Natural Curls

I’m VeCoya, a North Carolina native currently residing in Southern Maryland. I work in customer service but enjoy freelance blogging and modeling in my spare time too. I am currently navigating through ‘adulthood’ trying to create my own path. Oh, yeah and I’m obsessed with natural hair.

My sister and I have a lifestyle blog greenevdc.com where we discuss natural hair. For the most part, I have always been pleased with the length and condition of my hair. Until I discovered the flat iron insert dramatic sound in late 2007. After a year of flat ironing my hair to death without a heat protectant, I received my last relaxer in January of 2009. I decided to commit to returning to my natural state of hair seven years ago, initially because my hair was breaking off due to excessive heat damage, but since then I’ve gained a world of knowledge about the natural hair world!

I transitioned because it gave me more time to get to know my natural hair. Through the transition process, I was surprised and intrigued by my curls. Thanks to YouTube videos and natural hair websites, I learned how to care for my own hair. I transitioned for a little over a year and cut off my relaxed ends in February 2010. Caring for my own hair was a great feeling, I no longer had to depend on a stylist or spend half of my Saturdays in a hair salon. I have learned SO MUCH, and I am still learning through the good and the not-so-great experiences.

One not-so-great experience was when I relocated to Maryland in the summer of 2010. I wanted color oh so bad. I mean… I just couldn’t wait! I wanted it INSTANTLY. I went into this random shop and let some unknown beautician bleach my entire head peroxide blonde! I could literally smell the bleach, I wanted to cry when she finished. It was bad! (I have pictures if you need proof!) I can laugh about it now, but it was a critical lesson learned. I am now much more cautious about whom I allow to color and care for my hair. I do my research and find a professional stylist that prides him/herself in spectacular hair care when coloring or cutting my tresses.

My hair is complex, I have looser curls on one side. The right side always outgrows the left, despite me cutting it even. It is soft, unruly at times, thick, beautiful. At work I have to sit on my hands in order to stop playing in it, but I embrace it all! It’s perfectly flawed, but I love my hair.

“It’s perfectly flawed, but I love my hair.”

I co-wash it once a week and deep condition twice a month. I love variety so I try to switch it up but my go to style is flexi rods. Flexi rods requires little upkeep, I can keep them in for a week with low maintenance. I am a fan of protective styles as well; I love buns and twists/braids. I also like to flat iron my hair every now and then.

I don’t have a set routine, but I do listen to my hair. Sometimes it is as simple as running my fingers through it and I can tell exactly what she needs. Currently, healthy hair is my goal. If you are new to the natural hair world, my advice is to develop patience because this journey is definitely a process.

Fall in love with your texture and your natural curls. Do not compare yourself to others, because this is your journey. That applies to products as well, what works for me may not necessarily work for you and vice versa.

“Fall in love with your texture and your natural curls. Do not compare yourself to others, because this is your journey.”

Experiment, try new products and hairstyles to see what works for you. If you are experimenting with a new hairstyle and it turns out disastrous, try again. The more you try, the more you will learn and the better you will get at it, just like anything else in life.

'For What It's Worth': Bernie, Hillary, Jerry Brown, and A Colorful California Primary

“There’s something happening here
What it is ain’t exactly clear …”

Stephen Stills
“For What It’s Worth”
Buffalo Springfield
January 1967

Bernie Sanders had quite a Memorial Day. First, he addressed a spirited rally of more than 20,000 people in downtown Oakland, then he and actor Danny Glover drove a short distance and attended the second half of the Golden State Warriors’ dramatic Game 7 victory in the NBA Western Conference Finals. As Sanders and much of the local media pointed out, his arrival coincided with the defending world champion Warriors coming from behind and taking command of the game, completing their dramatic comeback from a 3 games to 1 deficit in the series.

Naturally, Sanders saw a parallel with the California team’s comeback to win the conference title and his own trailing campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination

“The Warriors were down 3-1 in the series and they turned it around and I think that’s what we’re going to do, too,” Sanders exulted. “A very good omen for our campaign.”

Since getting ripped for seeming to rationalize his supporters’ unacceptable behavior in shouting down the very liberal Senator Barbara Boxer — a very fine person and Hillary backer now who served with me as co-chair of the SolarCal legislative task force back during Jerry Brown 1.0 — at the recent Nevada Democratic Convention, Sanders has mostly cooled the anti-Hillary Clinton rhetoric coming from his campaign. Sanders himself has seemed to take up the challenge of competing to be the best candidate in running against Donald Trump. And his campaign has seemed to really take off here in California, with big rallies all over the state.

Is the force really with Sanders now, such that he can come from behind to win the California primary, then somehow parlay that into overturning Hillary’s 3 million-vote advantage in the popular vote and near lock on the number of delegates needed to win the nomination?

Well, maybe the first. But you wouldn’t want to bet on the second.

California public polls are all over the place. One very respected poll has a statistical tie, while a couple of other public polls have double-digit Clinton leads. My read is that both are off, that Hillary is ahead, but Bernie is in striking distance.

The Clintons evidently see things the same way, as Hillary is scrapping her previous schedule in favor of campaigning on five straight days here, starting Thursday.

Sanders has been drawing big crowds everywhere, and I mean everywhere, including places no other presidential primary candidate has ever gone, around California. It’s ultimate import is not yet clear, but there is clearly, as old Hart for President campaign friend Stephen Stills sang so long ago, “something happening here.”

If supporter enthusiasm equated to electoral victory, Sanders would have the Democratic presidential nomination in the bag. That it often does not does nothing to negate the fact that Sanders has struck a very powerful chord with his message criticizing the historic levels of income inequality and rigging of the political system by big money and media.

Governor Jerry Brown cited that in a statement on the race, praising Sanders and noting that he emphasized similar themes in his 1992 presidential campaign, in which he finished as the Democratic runner-up to Bill Clinton in a bruising battle. Sanders, of course, differs from Brown in running as a democratic socialist.

But Brown went on to endorse Hillary Clinton this time after meeting for 90 minutes earlier this month with former rival Bill Clinton at the Old Governor’s Mansion in Sacramento, which Brown and First Lady/Special Counsel Anne Gust Brown have refurbished as a truly historic residence.

Brown pointed up Hillary’s big overall lead in the Democratic contest and near lock on the delegates needed to win. He praised her skills, experience, and tenacity, citing a world in crisis and the not at all unrelated threat of Donald Trump.

“This is no time for Democrats to keep fighting each other,” he declared. “The general election has already begun.”

As longtime readers know, I’m essentially always for Jerry Brown. His take is always very interesting and usually on target. And, not surprisingly, I don’t disagree with his analysis.

But as a mere columnist, I have a slightly different conclusion. As I’ve said before, I intend to vote for Bernie Sanders.

He may not have struck me as a president when we met a few years ago, but he was clearly a powerful advocate. And his advocacy in this campaign merits not only my great respect, but my primary vote.

While I may differ with this and that particular in his democratic socialist agenda, he and his movement represent a powerful political tendency which can serve as a force for greater justice and less corruption.

As for Hillary Clinton, longtime readers know that I not infrequently disagree with her on the issues. While I’m hardly a pacifist or really any sort of dove, I’m generally a much more highly selective hawk than the former secretary of state. And the Wall Street coziness really is too much.

The presence of a powerful Sanders vector in American politics can serve to help move her away from some problematic stances.

And if Hillary continues on the course probably set when she won three of the four February contest states, I will be happy to support Hillary for the general election.

She is highly intelligent, capable, hard-working and deeply engaged by substance, a pragmatic progressive and battle-tested veteran of decades of attacks from the right-wing and its compliant de facto media partners.

The stakes, with a chaotic world and the potential advent of the neo-fascist bully boy Trump, as aggressive a know-nothing ever to come close to the presidency in my lifetime, are simply too high.

In the meantime, godspeed to Bernie Sanders.

iPhone 7 Rumored To Feature Enhanced Taptic Engine

3d_touchOne of the new features of the iPhone 6s would be 3D Touch, which in reality is similar to the Force Touch feature found on the Apple Watch. Users can press on the display and depending how hard they press, different commands could be executed followed by a slight vibration meant to provide haptic feedback to the user.

So far it works fine, but now a report from Nikkei (via MacRumors) has revealed that the upcoming iPhone 7 will feature an enhanced taptic engine. Apparently this engine will allow the device to create more complex tactile vibrations, meaning that it will improve upon 3D Touch and offer more varied and complex haptic feedback to the user.

For example the new engine could create haptic feedback that lasts longer, runs shorter, vibration at different speeds, and so on depending on the action you have chosen. Perhaps it could even follow your finger as you press on the screen (we’re just speculating), but either way if you found 3D Touch a bit lacking, hopefully these changes will make it better.

In any case so far the changes made to iPhone 7 seem to be more under the hood rather than a visual overhaul. From the leaked photos, the iPhone 7 won’t be too different in its design. Instead it is expected that 2017’s iPhone to be the real game changer.

This Gunshot-Plugging Device Just Saved Its First Life

xstat dressingYou guys might recall that in 2015, we reported on a device called the Xstat. This is basically a syringe of sorts where upon plugging it into a gunshot wound, would help seal the wound in 20 seconds thanks to the fact that the syringe is pack with tiny sponges. The device was designed for use in the battlefield and it should work in theory.

However if you were a little skeptical, wonder no more because it seems that the Xstat has managed to save its first life. According to the reports, a United States forward surgical team was attempting to staunch severe bleeding but were unsuccessful with more traditional methods, which is why they turned to the Xstat.

Turns out it was super effective as the device managed to stop the bleeding and gave them enough time to send the patient to the hospital for further treatment. According to the report from the Journal of Emergency Medical Services, it seemed like the Xstat had a near instantaneous effect.

“Throughout the course of the roughly 7-hour surgery, multiple attempts at using bone wax and cautery on the bleeding sites were unsuccessfull [sic] and the patient received multiple units of blood and plasma. Eventually, the FST team opted to use XSTAT and applied a single XSTAT device to the femoral cavity— resulting in nearly immediate hemostasis. The patient was stabilized and eventually transported to a definitive care facility.”

Samsung Schedules Event For June 2 In New York

samsung logoThere have been rumors that Samsung could be planning an earlier-than-expected launch of the Galaxy Note 6 (or Note 7 if the rumors are to be believed). There have also been a plethora of leaks regarding Samsung’s upcoming wearable in the Gear Fit 2, so the question is when can we expect to hear the official word?

Turns out we won’t have to wait too long because according to a recent invite Samsung has been handing out, the company will be hosting an event on the 2nd of June in New York where we expect new products to be announced. Now as pointed out by Phandroid, this isn’t an Unpacked event which Samsung typically uses to announce new phones.

What this means is that this event could be focused on other products instead, like the upcoming Gear Fit 2. However oddly enough the event does mention the term “Galaxy” not just once, but twice, which we have to wonder if it could be Samsung’s way of teasing new devices. However previous rumors indicated that if the next-gen Galaxy Note were to be announced, it would happen in July and not June.

In any case we guess we’ll just have to wait and see what Samsung has in store for us, so do remember to check back with us on the 2nd of June for the details.

The Eye-Plug Will Give Your Smartphone 3D Capture Capabilities

Earlier today we reported about a lens attachment for the GoPro called the Vitrima. Basically this allows GoPros to capture footage in 3D, versus the normal 2D footage. We have to admit that it is a pretty cool idea, but what if you don’t have a GoPro? Does this mean you don’t get to get in on the 3D fun?

The good news is that during Computex, it was discovered by the folks at Engadget that there is a company selling an accessory called the Eye-Plug. This accessory will work with smartphones, but the only downside is that it requires a USB-C connection, so if you have an older device we guess you’d be out of luck.

So how does this work? Basically it has a camera facing the front and one facing the back. It is meant to combine with your front and rear-facing cameras to create a stereoscopic-like image, and for $35 we have to wonder if it works. Turns out it does, at least according to Engadget who took it for a spin and said that the end result was “a perfectly acceptable resolution for Google Cardboard 3D viewing.”

That being said there are some disadvantages to the Eye-Plug, one of which is that its image quality might not match that of your current camera, and it also requires a USB-C connection which means that not many devices are compatible. At the moment the Eye-Plug is said to still be a prototype but full production is expected for later this year.
