Parched Lions Confuse Tourist's Tent With A Popsicle

African watering holes are a gathering place where all sorts of thirsty animals — prey and predator alike — come together for a drink. But, according to a tourist’s recent video, a wet tent also will do just fine.

While camping at the Mabuasehube Game Reserve in Botswana on May 9, Francie Francisca Lubbe was surprised to find three very curious lions licking her rain-drenched tent — while she was filming inside, mere inches away.

What a privilege,” Lubbe wrote on Facebook. “It rained during the night and 3 [lionnesses were] licking the water from the tent.”

Campsites at the Mabuasehube Game Reserve are located inside the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and have no fencing around them. Campers, the park’s official website warns, may encounter predators “in and around your campsites.”

Because “water is a commodity in the Kalahari” desert, rain provides visitors with an “excellent wildlife and wilderness experience,” the website says.

Lubbe wrote in a Facebook comment that she and her fellow campers didn’t try to hide when the lions approached their tent. Instead, they just watched quietly, according to USA Today.

Don’t disturb them and they “will leave you alone,” Lubbe explained. “Respect.”

According to the Smithsonian magazine, when you see a lion, the best thing you can do is stand still and make yourself look bigger.

Lubbe’s decision to quietly observe was a smart move. Plus, she walked away from the encounter with some very sweet footage of the fierce and thirsty predators.

Watch as the big cats quench their thirst on Lubbe’s tent, below.

Trump Protesters Hit With Smoke Grenades In Clashes With Albuquerque Police

Police in riot gear used smoke grenades on protesters who they said hurled rocks and bottles outside a Donald Trump campaign rally in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Tuesday night.

Anti-Trump protesters targeted officers on foot and on horseback outside the Albuquerque Convention Center, where Trump was speaking, police said. The Albuquerque Journal reported flaming objects were thrown at some officers.

Protesters lit Trump campaign merchandise on fire, KOB4’s Caleb James reported.

About 100 protesters broke through barricades and approached the convention center as Trump took the stage, the Albuquerque Journal reported. None entered the building. Windows in the building were broken by what the newspaper said it believed to be pellet guns.

Police denied there were gunshots and said said they didn’t use tear gas on protesters.

Later, as 4,000 people who were inside listening to Trump departed from the rally, altercations broke out with anti-Trump protesters.

There were no immediate reports of injuries. Police said that the only arrests of the night were of protesters inside the convention center.

Protesters later moved from the convention center to the streets of downtown Albuquerque.

Many of Trump’s rallies have been accompanied by violence among supporters and detractors. Trump, who at times has encouraged violence, has been condemned for not doing more to disavow the hostilities.

Earlier in the day, former President Bill Clinton was at the Plaza de Española to campaign for his wife, Hillary Clinton.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Foursquare’s Marsbot Will Tell You When & Where To Eat And Drink

foursquare marsbotIf you’re looking for food or drink recommendations, there are plenty of apps available for that, although right now one of the leading choices would be Foursquare. Now it seems that Foursquare wants to take things to the next level by telling its users where they can eat and drink when it thinks you are looking for a suggestion.

Dubbed Marsbot, Foursquare is making it clear that Marsbot is not a chatbot. Instead, “We chose to experiment with offering proactive and personalized recommendations. It’s a completely different mode of interaction. With a chatbot, you ask specific questions and give specific prompts for what you need. Our goal with Marsbot is to give you the answers before you even ask—just based on where you are and where you usually go.”

Basically instead of it being a reactive kind of AI, Marsbot has been designed to be a proactive AI in which it can recommend users where it thinks they might be interested in, as you can see in the screenshot to the right. It will be able to learn your habits over time to get a better understanding of who you are and the kind of places that you frequent.

As it stands, Marsbot is only available for iOS users and at the moment only works in New York City and San Francisco. If this sounds like something you might be interested in, head on over to the iTunes App Store for the download.

Adonit Unveils New Pixel Stylus To Compete With The Apple Pencil

One of the defining features of Apple’s iPad Pro lineup would be its ability to use a stylus with the tablet. Sure, this has been done before but the Apple Pencil affords the user similar features and functionality that the S Pen affords to Galaxy Note owners. There is also the added advantage of the Apple Pencil being smoother/more responsive.

That being said, the Apple Pencil is also pretty expensive as far as styluses are concerned, but the good news is that you now have an alternative in the form of the Adonit Pixel. This is a stylus designed for the iPad Pro which will offer users 2,048 levels of pressure sensitivity, offset correction, and palm rejection.

The only downside is that apps need to rely on the provided SDK in order for the stylus to be taken advantage of. When used normally or with apps that don’t support its features, the Adonit Pixel will simply be reduced to just a regular stylus. Another feature of the accessory would be its 1.9mm Pixelpoint tip, which apparently will offer up paper-like drag.

The best part is that the Pixel will be priced at $80, making it about $20 cheaper than the Apple Pencil. If you’d like to get your hands on it, head on over to its website to place your order.

Samsung Denies Giving Up On Android Wear

Gear-S2-watch_lifestyle__02Earlier we had reported that Samsung was apparently going to back out of creating new Android Wear devices. The reason is apparently due to the Tizen OS in which apparently it is the more superior operating system in terms of battery efficiency. Whether or not that is true remains to be seen, but we can’t say we’re surprised that Samsung would prefer their own platform.

However it seems that is no longer the case. According to Engadget, Samsung has since reached out to provide a comment that pretty much refutes the original report. According to Samsung, “We disagree with Fast Company’s interpretation. Samsung has not made any announcement concerning Android Wear and we have not changed our commitment to any of our platforms.”

This isn’t a flat out denial as it simply sounds like Samsung just did not agree with how Fast Company had originally interpreted their findings. It is possible that it could be true that Samsung will not be giving up on Android Wear, but at the same time their statement suggests that maybe there won’t be any new products based on Android Wear for the time-being, as opposed to not ever.

Note that this is a similar statement that Samsung has made in the past regarding their NX cameras, but from what we can tell the company has exited several markets already and several of their cameras have since been listed as discontinued, and we haven’t really heard anything about new cameras since.

Dear Donald Trump: Immigrants Like Me Make America Great

2016-05-25-1464144207-6565200-picfordonaltrumpart.jpg

Silicon Valley is a place where boundaries of race, color, traditions, religions melt, and the multiplicity of cultures strengthens the fabric which has fueled America’s economic engine of innovation. It goes against the grain of Siliconiers, with the upcoming presidential primaries in California, when Donald Trump declares that he “will make America great by building walls, by keeping Muslims out and bringing jobs back to America through reduced work visas.” He is okay operating on the edge of legal boundaries, filing for bankruptcies numerous times without remorse, which we find not quite acceptable.

Here is a story, and it’s my story. I was raised in India, but I am essentially a product of Silicon Valley. I arrived here for higher education and then followed my dreams in the Valley, like many other immigrants-turned-entrepreneurs. The acceptance, the inclusiveness, the opportunity, and the integrity of the Valley is magnetic and has upheld my idealism and has molded my thinking. When I graduated from UCLA with masters in electrical engineering, I was the only woman in my class.

“When I graduated from UCLA with masters in electrical engineering, I was the only woman in my class.”

It was not easy for me to assimilate and integrate in America for almost 10 years, both culturally and because I remained one of few women amongst my colleagues for almost a decade. Nine months after my arrival in the US, I completed my master’s degree with a 4.0 GPA. Yet it was not easy to find a job, because I did not have a work visa and needed an employer’s sponsorship. I went for my job interviews in a sari because that was the most formal article of clothing that I owned. My attire, my Indian accent, and lack of a work visa were definite impediments, but did not stop me from landing a job at GTE Lenkurt in San Carlos, at the boundary of the then Silicon Valley just two towns north of Palo Alto.

The Valley’s culture imbues authenticity which immigrants and locals equally embrace. At GTE, I was told that I was the highest-paid of the 13 new graduates hired that year. GTE did not low-ball my offer even though I could have been had for much less. Later I worked for another company for eight more years but left when I was passed over for promotion which I felt I deserved. In my exit interview, the representative of the personnel department asked me if I thought that I had been denied the promotion because of my gender. I replied, “No, the other guy politically outsmarted me but I was the more capable candidate.” They did not hedge or beat around the bush nor did I take advantage of them.

After this disappointment, I started my own technology company, Digital Link, with a coworker. I would become the first Indian woman to take a company public. When I started the company, people came out of the woodwork, people without whose help we would not have succeeded. A product manager at Northern Telecom, took special interest in getting our product approved. Selling the product to Northern Telecom and its customers, alleviated the pressure to raise immediate capital. He is still a great friend, after more than 30 years.

I hired Digital Link’s first manufacturing manager with a small advertisement in a local newspaper. He took over the building keys, the day he walked in. Our first accounting manager, a 27 year old white American took over the checkbook. Our first VP of R&D, another young American became my confidant and business partner. Summit Partners, a VC firm, funded the company knowing I was pregnant with my first child. They had the kind of integrity that I did not know existed. Their morality and support along with market opportunity helped propel my company to IPO. As an immigrant, I combined my nimble disposition and my hunger for recognition with American ethics to design innovative products and services.

Silicon Valley is also a hot spot of reengineering an enterprise as technology develops and becomes obsolete just in the span of a few years. Entrepreneurs are die-hard people who refuse to give up. My company suffered a major set back when WorldCom, our largest customer filed for bankruptcy. They cancelled the orders on the books, and no more future orders were expected and we had to eat up their inventory at hand. We never recovered. Yet we struggled for over five years, and when we finally decided to close the doors, we refused to file for bankruptcy. We felt moral obligation to pay our employees, the banks, and the vendors, with some money coming from our own pockets. This is what entrepreneurs in the Valley do.

Donald Trump’s thinking does not jive with this framework. We need to decide how to keep American dream alive, like in Silicon Valley, and to define what makes America great.
