Social networks should not need EU hate speech rules (but they do)

hammerInternet mega-brands Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft, and YouTube agree on a “code of conduct” with the European Commission to remove “hate speech” from their networks in less than 24 hours. This update does not necessarily hold these companies accountable the same way a hard-and-fast written law would in any one individual country. Instead, this would be more of an agreement – … Continue reading

Asus Announces Zenbo: A Cute, $600 Home Robot

Asus announced a bunch of new products at the Computex 2016 technology expo in Taiwan, but probably the oddest and coolest thing is probably their new cute house robot called Zenbo.

Zenbo is a household assistant and companion robot that can move independently around the house, recognize faces, play games with kids, read stories and more. It is controlled by voice command. It looks like they dialed cuteness way up past 11 to sell you on this ‘bot.

It can control lights, air conditioners, monitor fire alarms, offers up reminders for appointments and to take your pills, play movies, take photos, and much more. Its touchscreen face allows you to make video calls or browse the internet too. Here’s a video that showcases some of Zenbo’s capabilities:

According to those who were there at the Computex demo, the little robot was impressive, making cute faces, rolling around the stage and taking pictures with the crowd, all while answering questions. Zenbo will cost $600(USD) when it goes on sale – assuming you don’t mind turning your whole life over to a cute robot.

Facebook Wants To Improve Messenger Security

facebook-messenger-codes-2

Facebook Messenger has morphed into much more than a standalone app for chatting with your friends. It’s a robust platform which offers a wide variety of features. Naturally, security for users is of paramount important, and it appears that Facebook sees some room for improvement. According to a report, Facebook is looking into ways to make Messenger more secure for its users.

The Guardian reports that Facebook is thinking about adding end-to-end encryption to Messenger, an app used by more than 900 million people across the globe. It adds that the end-to-end encryption feature will be disabled by default so users will have to opt-in for it.

Messenger won’t be the first messaging service in Facebook’s portfolio to get end-to-end encryption. WhatsApp, a popular cross-platform messaging service that Facebook acquired a few years ago, recently flipped the switch on end-to-end encryption for all of its users.

The reason why Facebook might disable this feature by default is because of its own ambitions for the Messenger platform. It offers machine learning features which rely on user data to improve, but if encryption is enabled, Facebook won’t be able to access user data like messages.

For users, this would mean having to pick sides. If they want improved security they better be willing to live without some of the most powerful features that Messenger offers. If they want those features that they will have to compromise a bit on their privacy.

This stance is similar to that of Google’s new Allo messaging application which also features opt-in end-to-end encryption, something that makes Edward Snowden look at Allo very suspiciously.

Xbox One Price Cut Amid Rumors Of An Updated Console

xbox-one-hands-on-review-05

The Xbox One’s price has been revised multiple times since it was released in November 2013. The biggest price change came when Microsoft decided to unbundle Kinect from Xbox One. Later the price was cut by $50 to increase sales and effectively compete against the PlayStation 4, which is very far ahead in terms of sheer sales. Microsoft has once again cut the Xbox One price but the timing of this move is rather interesting.

Over the past few weeks, it has been consistently rumored that Microsoft is going to showcase new hardware at E3 2016 next month. Many expect that the company is going to launch an updated Xbox One console at E3.

The updated console is also being referred to as the “slim” Xbox One. It’s expected to be 40 percent smaller than the current console. If and when it arrives, Microsoft might offer it at a higher price while it continues to clear the existing Xbox One inventory at this new price.

Starting today, you can purchase the Xbox One for $299. That’s a $50 discount as opposed to the usual retail price. This discount applies to all bundles as well which are cheaper by $50 now until June 13th. The company says that this is a limited time promotion so if you’ve been meaning to get an Xbox One on the cheap, this is your chance to grab one.
