Anatomical Lung Necklace Takes Your Breath Away

Back in the day, I went to college and picked a career because I heard it paid really well. Turns out that was a lie, but whatevs. Now, I have that degree in Respiratory Therapy, and while I spent a long time working in the field, mostly all I remember from college are things like the hottie in my class that had a penchant for blue spandex dresses, how disturbingly in love with dissecting fetal pigs my anatomy teacher was, and to never stand at the end of a tracheostomy patient’s bed.

I also have a bunch of odd little factoids about lungs stored away just in case I end up on Jeopardy and a category is Cardiopulmonary Anatomy. Did you know that if you peeled your lungs open and laid all the alveoli (little balloon-like air sacs) and other airways out they would cover a tennis court? Surface area bros, surface area. If you want to celebrate the fact that you have lungs, this is the necklace you need.

It’s wooden, on a 17-inch chain, and has airways burnt into it. If you know a smoker, you could paint it black and give it as a gift.

It’s kind of pricy for a weird necklace at $25.99(USD) at ThinkGeek. It would totally make a Respiratory Therapist happy though.

You Might Need To Upgrade Your PC For New Major Windows Update

windows-10-update-95-percent

Chances are that the Windows 7 PC you got a few years ago was more than capable of running Windows 10 when the latest iteration of Microsoft’s operating system was released last year, but things are changing. Microsoft is going to release the next major update for Windows in a couple of months and you may have to upgrade your PC in order to install the update. Microsoft has now increased minimum system requirements for Windows 10.

Microsoft has updated its developer page to reflect that the upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update is going to require a minimum of 2GB RAM.

2GB RAM is already the required minimum for 64-bit versions of Windows 10, but Microsoft previously allowed the 32-bit version of its operating system to run on computers with at least 1GB RAM.

The machine also needs to have an at least 1GHz processor, 16GB free internal storage for 32-bit and 20GB storage for 64-bit as well as support for DirectX 9.

Microsoft has confirmed that it’s going to release the Windows 10 Anniversary update in a couple of months, but it hasn’t provided a confirmed release date yet. Given that it’s called Anniversary Update, one can expect the update to be released on July 29th, exactly a year after Windows 10 was released on the same date last year.

Apple Wireless Carrier Not A Possibility

iphone_tim_cook

Google wasn’t always in the business of offering wireless service, but it entered into this space with Project Fi, its virtual mobile network. There have been rumors that perhaps Apple would do something like this as well, but the company hasn’t really given any hints that might suggest it’s interested in launching a virtual mobile carrier. A new report claims Apple CEO Tim Cook has declared it unlikely for the company to offer wireless service.

9to5mac reports that Tim Cook made these comments at the Startup Fest Europe in Amsterdam today, he ruled out the possibility of Apple launching a mobile virtual network operator.

It was previously rumored that Apple was testing such a service, which would allow Apple to run its network off of the networks of established carriers like Project Fi does. The company was quick to deny these rumors in August last year.

“Our expertise doesn’t extend to the network,” Tim Cook is reported to have said in response to a question put forward by retired European Commissioner for Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes, adding that “the things Apple likes to do, are things we can do globally.”

Cook also pointed out that “we don’t have the network skill,” but did mention that Apple will do some things along the way with e-SIMs, but that’s about it. We won’t be seeing an iPhone-only MVNO soon.

OnePlus 3 Specs Leaked

oneplus-3-loop

OnePlus has always branded its smartphones as flagship killers, the idea being to provide flagship-level specifications at lower prices. It has already released a few handsets and they have been well received. Now that some of the biggest Android-powered flagships for 2016 have been released it’s time to see what OnePlus has in store for us. The company hasn’t confirmed specifications of its next flagship as yet but today the OnePlus 3 specs have been leaked online.

The OnePlus 3 leaked specifications come from none other than @evleaks, who has made quite a name for himself when it comes to these things, so it’s quite possible that what we read here is what’s going to be inside the handset.

OnePlus 3 is said to feature a 5.5 inch full HD 1080p display with a Snapdragon 820 processor, 16 megapixel rear camera, NFC, and software from an Android N preview build.

It has previously been rumored that two variants of the OnePlus 3 will be released, one with 4GB RAM and 32GB storage and the other with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage. Both handsets are expected to be priced in the $300-$400 range.

The company hasn’t confirmed any details about the specifications itself, but it did confirm yesterday that the OnePlus 3 is going to have a unique ordering process. Customers interested in this handset can order it in virtual reality before anybody else, OnePlus is even shipping out free VR headsets for this purpose.

Twitter Details What Won’t Count Against 140 Characters

twitter logo

It was reported a couple of weeks ago that Twitter is going to relax the rules related to its 140 characters limit for tweets. The company today announced that it’s going to allow users to express even more in 140 characters, meaning that it’s not going to count some things against the limit so that users can squeeze in more content in their tweets, without it having to remove the 140 character limit.

Twitter has religiously stuck to the 140 character limit ever since it was launched, it previously applied the limit to direct messages as well but last year it decided to remove the limit from DMs, but it hasn’t hinted at doing the same for regular tweets.

It’s taking other measures to enable users to express more in a single tweet. In the coming months, when replying to tweets, @names won’t count against the limit. Attachments like photos, GIFs, polls, videos or Quote tweets will also not count against the 140 character limit.

Twitter is also going to enable the retweet button for own tweets in the coming months, allowing users to easily retweet or quote tweet themselves. It hasn’t said when the changes will take effect, it only mentions that all this will be happening in the next few months.

Twitter is doing away with the “.@” convention as well which currently allows users to broadcast their tweets broadly. Soon, new tweets that begin with a username will reach all followers instead.

Pebble 2, Pebble Time 2 And Pebble Core Announced

We reported yesterday that Pebble was counting down to an announcement due today and it was expected that the company would unveil new devices, which is what it has done. Pebble has announced the Pebble 2, Pebble Time 2 and Pebble Core wearable devices today. Like its previous products, they are being launched through a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter as well.

Pebble’s first campaign kicked off back in 2012 when it made Kickstarter history by raising more than $10 million, above and beyond its original goal. It launched the Pebble Time via Kickstarter last year and ended up raising over $20 million.

In 2016, Pebble is once again looking to Kickstarter to raise the funds for its latest hardware. It’s bringing three new wearable devices and seeking to raise $1,000,000. You don’t have to worry about the campaign not meeting its goal because as of this writing the campaign has already raised more than the goal, it’s at $1,546,339.

The Pebble 2 is a basic $99 smartwatch with heart rate-enabled activity tracking. The $169 Pebble Time 2 is a proper smartwatch with a larger, color e-paper display and heart rate monitoring. Pebble Core is a clippable fitness device with 3G connectivity, it’s capable of streaming music from Spotify and syncing data with Runkeeper, Strava, and Under Armour Record, and can be ordered for $69 right now on Kickstarter.

More details about each product are available on the Kickstarter page, the campaign is going to run for 36 days and is likely going to raise many millions of dollars in the process.

BMX Star Dave Mirra Had CTE When He Died, Doctors Say

Dave Mirra, the legendary athlete who helped popularize BMX in the world of extreme sports, suffered from chronic brain damage when he died in February.

Neuropathologists from the U.S. and Canada confirmed that Mirra suffered from Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a neurodegenerative disease that can lead to depression, memory loss and dementia, ESPN Magazine reported. The disease manifests itself when people suffer frequent blows to the head, and has shown itself in the brains of dozens of football players. The NFL just recently admitted that there is a connection between football injuries and CTE.

Mirra’s family asked to have his brain studied for CTE after the athlete died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Greenville, North Carolina, on Feb. 4.

“It validates what we have been thinking about brain injuries in boxers and football players,” Dr. Lili-Naz Hazrati, a University of Toronto neuropathologist who helped diagnose Mirra’s CTE, told ESPN Magazine. “The key is brain injury. Regardless of how you get it, through BMX or hockey, you are at risk for this.”

Mirra joins a growing list of professional athletes who have suffered from the disease.

Earl Morrall, former NFL quarterback for the Baltimore Colts, died in 2014. In February, his family confirmed that Morrall had stage-four CTE.

Bubba Smith, an All-Pro defensive end in the NFL who joined the Baltimore Colts in 1967, died in 2011 of a weight-loss drug overdose. On Tuesday, researches with the Department of Veteran Affairs, Boston University and Concussion Legacy Foundation confirmed that Smith suffered from CTE, The New York Times reported.

Mirra’s widow, Lauren, told ESPN Magazine she noticed changes in her husband’s mood before his death.

“He wasn’t able to be present in any situation or conversation, so it was hard to be in a relationship with him to any degree,” Lauren told the publication. “He was lost. I looked straight through him on a few occasions. And I was like, ‘Where are you? Where are you? What is wrong?'”
