Watch As Casey Anderson Tickles A Grizzly Bear's Feet… And Lives

Adorable… yet deadly.

Bella is an orphaned grizzly bear cub at the Montana Grizzly Encounter sanctuary. A new GoPro clip posted on YouTube shows Casey Anderson, co-owner and director of the sanctuary, teaching Bella about space and boundaries.

Watch him swing Bella around like a teddy bear (one that even as a cub could probably inflict some serious damage if she wanted to):

Anderson writes on his website that all of the bears at the sanctuary “were born in unfortunate captive situations and could NEVER be released into the wild. The bears have been rescued from often inhumane captive situations all over the U.S.”

Someday, probably very soon, Bella will become one of nature’s most efficient killing machines. But for now, check out those little bear feet:

Along with running the sanctuary, Anderson is also host and executive producer of “Expedition Wild” and “America the Wild” on Nat Geo WILD.  In other words, he’s a bear professional, so do not under any circumstances try this on your own.

Demi Lovato Wins Billboard Music Awards By Showing Support For Transgender Community

Demi Lovato is taking a stand.

The “Confident” singer proudly wore a shirt showing her support for the transgender community during her performance at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday. The black top featured an inclusive bathroom symbol.

Lovato’s shirt was a direct hit against North Carolina’s anti-queer legislation, House Bill 2 (HB2). The bill, signed by North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory on March 23, prohibits transgender people from using the public restroom that corresponds with their gender identity.

“Demi Lovato continues to be a fearless ally for LGBT equality and acceptance,” GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a press release after Lovato’s performance. “By wearing her support for the transgender community, Lovato is raising critical visibility for vulnerable LGBT North Carolinians and sending an invaluable message of support to transgender people everywhere.”

Both Lovato and fellow singer Nick Jonas, who are going on tour together, canceled their Raleigh and Charlotte, North Carolina, tour dates because of HB2.

A replica of the T-shirt will be sold during Lovato and Jonas’ Honda Civic Tour: Future Now and the proceeds will be donated to LGBT organizations in North Carolina, GLAAD announced Sunday.

The Thunder Finally Made The Great Warriors Feel Pretty Bummed In Game 3

See that? For real!

The Golden State Warriors played the worst game of their record-setting 73-win season on Sunday night. They’re the defending champions, and have felt like the Kings of the NBA for about 20 months now.

But tonight, for the first time in what feels like years, the must-see Warriors will lick their wounds. Losing to the Thunder 133-105 in for the second game in a row to find themselves down 2-1 in the Western Conference Finals is bad. Losing the biggest game of the season to date by 28 points on the road is worse.

It’s shocking. Oklahoma City is abuzz tonight — who knew the vaunted Warriors could get beat like this

Russell Westbrook’s aggression took three of the Warriors’ top players right out of the play for Kevin Durant’s slam.

They got smoked. And if any team could do it, it’s the Thunder. Only Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant could combine to split the Warriors defense, a top-five unit in the regular season, in such a vicious manner. They took turns burning that defense so badly that they’ve gained a psychological edge that few teams can claim against the them: They’re not afraid of the Warriors.

I repeat: The Thunder players aren’t afraid of the Warriors.

Westbrook racked up a triple-double with 30 points, 8 rebounds, and 12 assists (he’s got a league-leading 12 double-doubles this postseason) and Durant pitched in 33 points. He even managed to split his legs and the Warriors’ defense at the same time.

Game 3 was a blitzkrieg. The Warriors allowed 73 first half points and found themselves down 25 points at halftime — an amount that no team has ever overcome at halftime in a playoff game. At one point, they were down as much as 41 points. They’ve lost three games this postseason by 19 total points.

28 points was the losing margin tonight.

Steph Curry sat the fourth quarter, as he’s done many times this season with the game comfortably in hand for the Warriors. Tonight, he sat, but on the losing side of that feeling for once.

Madonna And Stevie Wonder Prove No One Compares To Prince At Billboard Music Awards

Madonna took the stage at the Billboard Music Awards on Saturday night to pay tribute to the late, great Prince.

Before she even stepped on stage, the crowd was on their feet as Prince’s voice blared over the speakers, reciting the iconic opening lines of “Let’s Go Crazy”: “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life.”

Madge, dressed in “Purple Rain” garb, appeared sitting on a plush purple chair. She broke out into a cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which was made popular by Sinead O’Connor. Then Stevie Wonder walked onto the stage to sing “Purple Rain” with the Material Girl. The two held hands and belted out the lyrics as the crowd waved their arms (wrapped in purple wristbands) in the air and sang along.

The performance was understated yet moving, and overall, a great tribute to one of music’s biggest icons.

One Thing You Didn't Notice In The Explosive 'Preacher' Premiere

After months of anticipation and speculation, “Preacher” finally premiered on AMC on Sunday, and all we have to say is, “HOLY HELL!”

The show, based on the comic books, tells the story of a man named Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper). Custer has a mysterious, violent past and has moved back to his old hometown of Annville, Texas, to be a preacher.

In the premiere, we meet Custer’s ex-girlfriend Tulip (Ruth Negga), who is introduced by killing a guy with an ear of corn and shooting down a helicopter. Custer also befriends a vampire named Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun), who takes out a bunch of religious fanatics trying to kill him before jumping out of a plane.

The show starts out in outer space, with a mysterious entity traveling to Earth. This unknown force possesses a number of religious figures, including Tom Cruise, unfortunately resulting in each person exploding.

Sorry, Tom.

Eventually, the entity possesses Jesse Custer, who now has the ability to make people literally obey his commands (as demonstrated with one guy cutting out his heart after Custer repeatedly told him to “open” his heart).

The entity that possessed Custer is known in the comics as Genesis, the offspring of an angel and a demon. And if you listen closely during Genesis’ appearance, you can hear one tiny detail you might’ve missed.

When Genesis is traveling to Earth, you can actually hear a baby crying in the background. This likely is a nod to the character’s portrayal in comics (as a comet with a crying infant’s face). We asked showrunner Sam Catlin (“Breaking Bad“) about the detail in a recent interview.

“It sounds like a baby crying, right?” said Catlin. “Well, I’ll leave it up the viewers what that is or what that means, but, yeah, we came up with some sound design that’s supposed to evoke all sorts of things.”

You can listen to the sound yourself by watching the opening of “Preacher,” which AMC has online.

This show is officially here to save you.

Should You Keep Track Of Workout Calorie Counts?

The Question: Just how accurate is the “calories burned” display on my treadmill? Should I keep track of how much I’m burning off if I’m trying to lose weight?

Answer: That number is just an estimate, and it’s unclear whether knowing it will help you lose weight.

Exercise trackers and fitness equipment typically estimate the number of calories you burn when you exercise, but experts say you shouldn’t put too much stock into that number — and shouldn’t rely on it to help you lose weight.

Paying attention to calories burned during exercise could also feed into an inaccurate and counterproductive transactional mindset that leads to mindless overeating and weight gain in the long run, says E. Todd Schroeder, director of the Clinical Exercise Research Center at the University of Southern California.

There are several problems with focusing on the number of calories linked to a certain exercise. For one, people tend to overestimate the calories they’ve burned while exercising and underestimate the calories they consume, which could lead to a miscalculation that prevents them from achieving their weight goals.

Secondly, people tend to feel like they’re “entitled” to eat more after a workout, which could lead to weight gain in general.

“If they think they burned more calories than they did, then they say, ‘I can enjoy a Frappuccino because I did a hard workout,’” Schroeder said. “That’s a big issue.”

And finally, thinking of exercise in such a goal-oriented way may take away from the pleasure of doing the physical activity, which over time could increase the likelihood of dropping out

How your body adjusts to more physical activity over time

There’s even some evidence that your body limits the number of calories it burns in a single day. Research shows that over time, bodies adapt to higher activity levels and eventually become more efficient about the calories they use, says Herman Pontzer, an evolutionary biologist at Hunter College.

Pontzer’s recent study comparing calorie expenditures across many different cultures showed that hunter-gatherers in Tanzania burned about the same amount of calories as an office worker in the U.S. This could be for at least two reasons, he explained. The first theory is that, over time, your body accommodates your level of physical activity by expending fewer calories to execute basic functions, like keeping your immune system running.

“If you increase your activity level a bit, what we see is that your total energy expenditure doesn’t change,” says Pontzer. “But that’s not because you got more efficient at running or walking — your body probably carved a little bit of energy out of all those other tasks to make room for those increased running or walking costs.”

The second theory is that active people might compensate for their exercise in subtle, subconscious ways, like resting more after the activity or remaining sedentary for the rest of the day after a workout.

What calorie counting can do for you

Despite these limitations, most experts agreed that calorie counts might be helpful to get a rough baseline for your activity, as long as you understand that it’s an estimate and probably doesn’t reflect the precise number of calories your body is actually using, says Dr. Pamela Peeke, a spokesperson for the American College of Sports Medicine and author of the book Body For Life For Women

Schroeder concedes that counting calories burned can be useful for people who want to judge their workouts against past performances and use the same machine to calculate it every time.

But instead of setting a calorie goal with exercise, it’s more valuable to feel present in your body as you move, because it allows you to concentrate on form and intensity, Peeke explained. Her advice: Once or twice, look at the calories display to get a ballpark estimate of what you’re working with, but mostly you should focus instead on how your body feels during the physical activity.

“You can’t pay attention to your body and your numbers,” Peeke said. “Feel it through.”

How to get an accurate calorie count

Most exercise machines and calorie tracking apps and devices estimate the calories you burn based on data you enter about your age, sex and weight, but things like body composition, training level and exercise intensity all play a role in how many calories you truly burn. And this true number can only be calculated in a lab that measures either the amount of heat your body is giving off, or the amount of oxygen you take in as you exercise.

But if you’d like to see a estimate, if only to underscore just how difficult it is to “burn off” part of what you eat every day, here’s a chart of common activities and the approximate number of calories that a 125-, 155- and 185-pound person would burn after 30 minutes.

Reminder: Exercise is less efficient than diet for weight loss

There are so many benefits to physical activity, including increased stamina, stronger muscles and disease prevention, but creating a calorie deficit for weight loss is the least of them. So much hard work can be “undone” in a single high-calorie snack or drink, which is why nutritionists and obesity experts tell people to focus on diet when trying to lose weight.

“Nutrition is what’s going to get you there,” Peeke concluded. “What the physical activity does is optimize what you did in the kitchen.”
