Meatless Monday: Vegan Takes a Holiday

Happy Memorial Day, the unofficial launch of summer and summer holidays. Where to go? And what to eat? A growing number of vegan tour groups make travel more fun and remove the worry about what’s in your dinner. Think of it as plant-based Trip Advisor.

Why vegan travel? Demetrius Bagley, award-winning producer of Vegucated has been working — and playing — with Vegano Italiano because their tours offer all the fun, none of the stress. “Rather than printing out a gazillion pages from Happy Cow,” he says, Vegano Italiano, a specialized tour series organized by husband-and-wife travel pros Gretchen Sheridan and Pasquale Tierno “makes it easy.” The Vegano Italiano team has over 40 years travel experience and the Italy-based couple bring their insider knowledge and passion to tours of Italy. So do all-star culinary instructors like Julieanna Hever and Fran Costigan.

Many people choose vegan tours for the same reason they go vegan in the first place — wellness. That was Sandy Pukel’s thought when launching Holistic Holiday at Sea. Pukel spent years living and teaching meatless nutrition, macrobiotics and wellness only to watch clients backslide into old, unhealthy ways. His idea — get them away from their routine long enough to let good habits take hold. “Of course it has to be fun, too. We have parties every night,” says Pukel. But participants always rate the classes and instructors including vegan celebs like T. Colin Campbell and Rich Roll “as their #1 reason for coming.” The pioneering vegan cruise has grown exponentially since it began 14 years ago. Now 35 presenters, 20 vegan chefs and 1,850 attendees commandeer half the MSN Divina for a week-long Caribbean trip to wellness.

More intimate but just as wellness-focused are Blissed Out Retreats organized by vegan chef, athlete and wonderwoman Christy Morgan. Her wellness workshops (which like Vegano Italiano tours are limited to 20) take place in exotic locales like Bali and Mexico and attract an equal mix of vegans and omnivores “which I love because I l get to expose omnivores to vegan food,” says Morgan. “Many comment on how amazing they feel and will continue when they get home — this is a great feeling as an activist.”

The food is amazing, of course, but the tours also reflect the increasing sophistication of vegan travel, incorporating a in-depth, hands-on experience. We’re talking really hands-on — making your pasta in Italy, strolling the markets in India, sharing a home-cooked vegan meal in the home of a local host. “We focus on cultural immersion,” says VegVoyages co-founder Zac Lovas. “We work closely with communities where the adventure is taking place to introduce local cultures and customs in a responsible and respectful manner.”

VegVoyages offers 25 tours of Southeast Asia, and all integrate the green living attitude that’s a core part of being vegan. “The best part,” says Lovas, “is bridging cultural gaps and hopefully making the world a little smaller for all of us.” Winner of the 2015 Green Festival Green Dream Award, VegVoyages is also VegNews‘ go-to company for the magazine’s upcoming tours of India and Thailand. “They meet our standard of excellence every step of the way,” says VegNews editor Colleen Holland, who always returns from the tours “recharged and full of gratitude.”

Lovas and Morgan both say the biggest tour challenge isn’t logistics, it’s getting guests to leave behind pre-conceived notions — fear of different places — and to turn off the noise (and cellphones) of their life back home.

Some destinations are challenging. There has yet to be a vegan tour of ham-loving Germany or Spain, but Vegan River Cruises gets you pretty close, with cruises down the Danube and Rhone. Most tours focus on the Mediterranean, Caribbean and Southeast Asia, where plant-based food is intrinsic to the culture and cuisine. It’s pretty spectacular, too, and for a change, you can eat it all.

There’s a vegan tour for you wherever you want to go, whatever your passion and price point. Remember, though — the real investment here is in yourself. Pack your bags.

Crema di Pistacchio (Pistachio Butter)

If like me, you have a weakness for nuts and nut butters, this recipe from Fran Costigan is so luscious, it’s dangerous. Use to top crostini, as a base for gelato or eat out of the jar. As Fran says, “The taste is pure Italy.”

Recipe reprinted with permission from Fran Costigan.

8 ounces shelled, raw, unsalted pistachios (from about 16 ounces in-shell pistachios )
5 tablespoons superfine sugar
1/8 teaspoon sea salt
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil, more if needed to adjust consistency.

Process the pistachios in a food processor until very fine. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.

Add the sugar, salt and olive oil. Process until a smooth and almost runny paste is achieved. This can take up to 10 to 12 minutes in a standard food processor.

Spoon into a clean jar with tight fitting lid. Refrigerated, this spread should stay fresh for a couple of weeks.

Makes 1 cup.

Watch A Cheetah Sprint With A GoPro And Hang On For The Ride

We all know cheetahs are fast, right? But virtually hitching a ride on one can give you an even better idea of their acceleration.

A cheetah at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden was outfitted recently with a GoPro, providing a cat’s-eye view as she sprints.

“We think this might be the first time this has been accomplished with a cheetah,” the zoo wrote in its May 26 YouTube post.

It’s a swift and bumpy ride.

Ubuntu bq Aquaris M10 Review Part 2: Software

bq-aquaris-m10-ubuntu-24-coverIn part one of our rather lengthy review, we took a look at the bq Aquaris M10 Ubuntu tablet’s hardware. Suffice it to say, it perfectly played the role of a mid-range tablet. While the device had a few ups, like its lightweight design, bright display, and substantial battery, it would have been easily passed for a mediocre slab if … Continue reading

ASUS Zenbo Robot Will Control Your Home For You

Controlling your home using technology isn’t new, although it seems that there is a rise in the offerings of such products these days. Now it looks like ASUS wants to throw their hat into the ring by announcing at Computex the ASUS Zenbo, which as you can see in the images above and below is a cute robot designed to help users control their home.

According to ASUS’s press release, “ASUS Zenbo arose from Chairman Jonney Shih’s ambition to enable robotic computing for every household. Zenbo is a friendly and capable home robot designed to provide assistance, entertainment, and companionship to families and meant to address the needs of each family member in this ubiquitous computing era.”

The robot seems to be aimed primarily at the elderly who might not be able to walk around as much or who aren’t too quick, so by using voice commands and offering the ability to set reminders like doctor appointments and medication and exercise, it will hopefully make the lives of the elderly more comfortable.

However in addition to being able to cater to the elderly, the Zenbo will also be able to connect to other smart objects at home, like the lights in your home, TV, air conditioners, and more. It can even tell you who’s at the door via a connected camera. It can also move around and its face acts as a touchscreen display. With a price tag of $599, the ASUS Zenbo is certainly an affordable way to start getting connected.

Google Brings It Accelerated Mobile Pages To Its iOS App

google_amp_iosJust like Facebook’s instant articles, Google has a similar feature for the web called Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP). For those who are unfamiliar with the feature, basically these are websites that have been designed to load instantly when you click on it, as opposed to more traditional websites where content is loaded only after you’ve clicked it.

Now for iOS users, the good news is that if you use the Google app for iOS, the company has announced that they will be bringing AMP to its iOS app. What this means is essentially the same instant loading feature for the web will now be available within the iOS app itself, as you can see in the screenshot above.

According to Google, “Starting today, AMP will be available in the Google app for iOS. So now news articles from a vast array of publishers will load instantly for your reading pleasure. Just look out for the lightning bolt and “AMP” next to articles in the “Top Stories” section of your search results and enjoy blazing-fast news.”

Of course not all websites will be AMP compatible, but the bigger websites and publications should be. So if you have not updated your Google app for iOS yet, just head on over to the iTunes App Store to get your hands on it.

34-inch ASUS Designo Curve MX34VQ Monitor Launched

asus designo MX34VQ frontFor the longest time ever, monitors were flat. The only difference is how big the monitor’s display is, its resolution, the aspect ratio, and we guess more recently how thick its bezels are. However these days we are starting to look at more curved displays being offered, which supposedly offer a more immersive viewing experience.

We’re not sure how many of us would need such a display, but if you do, ASUS has announced the Designo Curve MX34VQ. This is a 34-inch curved monitor that will feature a UWQHD resolution, which basically translates to 3440×1440, which is actually a pretty high resolution and one that we reckon should look pretty good on the display.

The design of the monitor itself isn’t too shabby. According to ASUS, the monitor will come with the company’s SonicMaster audio that will incorporate Harman Kardon’s audio technology, so if you don’t have a pair of speakers already, don’t worry because this monitor has a pair already. The base of the monitor will also be able to serve up as a wireless charging pad for Qi-compatible devices.

Unfortunately ASUS did not mention how much the monitor would cost, but given its high resolution, its curved display, and other features, we reckon it will probably be relatively expensive.

Merrick Garland Champions Work In Public Service During Commencement Address

Despite the ongoing senatorial struggle over his confirmation, Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland spent his Memorial Day weekend urging the next generation to take up public service, calling such a decision among “the most rewarding” the judge has had.

Garland was invited to his high school alma mater, Niles West High School, near Chicago over the weekend to deliver the commencement address to the class of 2016. During the speech, the 19-year veteran of the Washington D.C. Court of Appeals made no mention of the political battle raging around his nomination, but rather, spoke to the trials life can bring after high school and the fulfillment brought on by a career helping others.

“Devote some part of your life to public service … it does not matter what kind of public service you choose,” said Garland, who graduated from Niles West in 1970. “At graduation I thought I was going to be a doctor. But after my college roommate … finally let me know I really wasn’t all that good at math, I shifted course and chose a career in law. Specifically a career devoting to building the kind of faith in rule of law that civil society depends on.”

Garland continued that there were many avenues to make a difference in the world, pointing to his work tutoring students at an elementary school. He later quoted one of his “favorite people,” Harry Potter protagonist Hermione Granger, noting the character’s hope “to do some good in the world.”

“But as Professor Dumbledore once told Harry Potter: It is our choices that show what we truly are, more than our abilities,” Garland said. “So make the choice do to some good in the world.”

President Obama nominated Garland to the nation’s highest court back in March, but Senate Republicans have largely refused to even meet with the well-regarded judge, let alone hold a confirmation hearing. Bucking any form of precedent, GOP stalwarts have called on such a decision to be made after the presidential election despite concern from the likes of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Take a look at Garland’s entire speech above.

Pope Awards Medals To George Clooney, Richard Gere And Salma Hayek

ROME (Reuters) – Pope Francis on Sunday awarded medals to American actors Richard Gere and George Clooney and actress Salma Hayek at an event held at the Vatican to promote the work of a foundation inspired by the pontiff, Scholas Occurrentes.

Clooney attended the event with his wife Amal, a lawyer.

The foundation, whose name means “schools that meet” in Spanish, links technology with the arts, aiming at social integration and a cultural of peace.

Francis had created a similar organization when he was Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, but Scholas has now become an international foundation working out of the Vatican.

“Important values can be transmitted by celebrities,” said one of the organizers, Lorena Bianchetti, adding that the actors had agreed to be ambassadors for one of the foundation’s arts projects.

Man Accused Of Driving Through Memorial Day Cross Display

A 27-year-old man is accused of trashing a Memorial Day cross display in Henderson, Kentucky over the weekend.

Anthony Burrus allegedly drove a Ford Thunderbird through a field of white, plastic crosses set up inside the city’s Central Park to honor more than 5,000 residents who died while serving their country.

Witnesses called police to the scene shortly before 6 a.m. on Saturday. Upon arrival, officers found 160 damaged crosses, each worth $100.

Volunteers from the Henderson Fire Department and the American Legion banded together to restore 140 of the crosses to their rightful places, WFIE reported. Twenty crosses were completely destroyed, and it was unclear if they would be replaced in time for the Memorial Day service on Monday.

The Henderson Police Department took to Facebook on Saturday to issue a series of appeals for information about the incident. The first (above) revealed the crash damage. Then they released surveillance video showing what was believed to be the vehicle used in the incident:

“It appears to be a late ’70s model car, possibly dark blue, and may have t-tops. Ford Thunderbird?” the post stated, before asking citizens to contact cops with any possible tips.

On Saturday night, the department revealed it had made an arrest in connection with the case:

Burrus was arrested for criminal mischief and leaving the scene of an accident. He is currently being held at Henderson County Detention Center, in lieu of $2,500 bond.

His vehicle was found abandoned outside a McDonald’s restaurant. Pieces of a cross and a stake were found embedded in the tires, police said.

Henderson Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Richmond said the incident had “upset the entire community.”

This is something you don’t do. This is a form of desecration,” Richmond told The Associated Press. “These people served their country and then someone disrespected their memory in this way, and it’s just totally unacceptable.”

Police aren’t sure whether Burrus drove over the crosses on purpose, and said he denies all knowledge of the incident.

“He said he didn’t do it. He admitted to driving the vehicle in the morning but would not state that he drove through the park,” Richmond added. “But the evidence is in his car tires.”
