Trump Tells Motorcycle-Riding Crowd He Will Help Veterans

By Alana Wise

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – In a move to bolster support among veterans, Republican Donald Trump joined a leather-jacket-wearing, motorcycle-riding crowd in Washington on Sunday to honor fighters who served in foreign wars and advocate for those still missing in action.

Riders from across the country converged on the National Mall near the Lincoln Memorial for the annual “Rolling Thunder” rally and to listen to the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, who hopes to be commander in chief next year.

“We’re going to rebuild our military and we’re going to take care of our veterans,” Trump told the crowd of thousands, many of whom wore leather vests, veterans’ hats and biker insignia.

Trump, the billionaire businessman who has promised to build a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico if he becomes president, said illegal immigrants in many cases got better care in the United States than military veterans.

“We’re not going to allow that to happen any longer,” he said.

Trump, 69, who did not serve in the military, upset veterans last year when he said Senator John McCain of Arizona was not a war hero.

McCain, a Navy fighter pilot who went on to become the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, was imprisoned and tortured after being shot down during the Vietnam War.

Trump made no mention of McCain during his remarks on Sunday, and the crowd cheered him enthusiastically, with some waving signs including “Bikers for Trump” and “Make America Great Again.” Supporters cheered when Trump mentioned veterans and booed at the mention of Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.

“I don’t know if he can fix (veterans’ issues), but he’s the only one I think will try,” said Leonard Westberry, 68, of Richmond, Virginia, a U.S. Army veteran who served in Vietnam in 1967. Westberry said he planned to support Trump in the Nov. 8 election.

“It’s awesome that Trump is here. … That’s a good thing,” said Ralph Giannola, 65, who said he had not decided whether to support Trump in November.

“I just don’t want to see any rioting. I mean, protests are OK. I don’t want to see anybody get hurt,” he said.

There were no protest interruptions during Trump’s nearly 20-minute address on Sunday, a rarity for similar events.

“I know one thing, you’re going to all behave yourselves, right?” Trump said to positive affirmations from the crowd. “And I know another thing – there won’t be any paid agitators in this group,” he added to cheers.

Another Big Mistake in North Carolina

In Wilmington, North Carolina, a local man with two children in a public elementary school recently noticed that there seemed to be some racial discrimination behind certain policies at the school, and he spoke up. As a result of his concern and action, he can no longer set foot on any school property throughout the county.

An Emperor once banned all philosophers from Rome and his popularity instantly increased. I don’t think that’s going to be the result for our local Superintendent of Schools who has banned Clyde Edgerton from all New Hanover County North Carolina school grounds.

I almost never blog about local events. But this one has national relevance and universal human resonance, so please indulge me for a moment about this man, Clyde, and his current exile.

Lest you think that this individual barred from school property must be some felonious gun toting, drug selling, rabble rousing, drunken, foul mouthed gang recruiter named ‘Clyde Edgerton,’ I should point out up front that it’s the University of North Carolina at Wilmington Kenan Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing, and North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame author of Rainey, Walking Across Egypt, The Floatplane Notebooks, Killer Diller, In Memory of Junior, and on and on including the Papadaddy’s Book for New Fathers: Advice to Dads of All Ages Clyde Edgerton, the amazingly artistic painter guitarist, and astute banjo player Clyde Edgerton–yeah, the Renaissance Man Who Chooses To Live in small beautiful Wilmington Clyde Edgerton, one of the few people in the state or the nation whose mere presence on county school property would be in itself an education for all the students who beheld him or had the chance to interact with him. That’s the one who has been banned from ever setting foot again on school grounds in our county.

Of course, Socrates was given poison to drink because all the good he was doing for his town was interpreted as bad and he therefore shared the treatment of many great people through the ages. At least Clyde hasn’t been handed a hemlock cocktail, tarred and feathered, or invited to a big bonfire cookout featuring Roasted Author, like so many of his benevolent predecessors who crossed The Powers That Be.

Mr. Edgerton, according to our newspaper here today, had been working actively as a tutor at Forest Hills Elementary School in Wilmington. Stephen Hawking was apparently unavailable for this role, Mother Theresa has long been out of the picture, and Billy Graham can’t travel like he once did. So instead we got Clyde Edgerton as a volunteer tutor for one of our schools, until he was just barred from setting foot on the property of this or any such county institution. His crime was working to make sure that some of the best opportunities at the school were available to all qualified children, regardless of race. And in doing so, he offended our superintendent. As I read on in the Wilmington StarNews piece about this insanity, it seemed to me that in this particular case, the emperor truly has no clothes. And if that makes no sense to you, it’s likely because you never had a Clyde Edgerton in your life, or on your school property.

It’s another Big Mistake in North Carolina, and is somehow deeply consonant with other such mistakes of late. Those who don’t agree with the odd Powers That Be should just “get out of our yard and go home.” This is the attitude of childhood that currently prevails. But I’m sure things like this happen in cities and towns all around out nation all too often. And when they do, we should all speak up. So I’ve written our local paper. I’ve done this blog. And I hope many more of my neighbors will protest this thing as well. It’s the 21st Century, Y’all. But not, apparently, all throughout my otherwise mostly wonderful state.

I hope this ban can be reversed right away, for the greater good of our–in other respects–fine community. And Clyde: If not, then you’re welcome on my property any time.

New Call of Duty: Black Ops III Calling Cards Support Veterans Needing Jobs

call-of-duty-endowment-cards

Activision has announced a new kind of DLC on Memorial Day weekend, it’s a new calling card set which supports the company’s Call of Duty Endowment organization that leads a nationwide effort to match veterans with high-quality jobs once their service has come to an end. The Call of Duty Endowment Valor Calling Card Set is a pack of three exclusive cards, one each for land, air, and sea.

The Call of Duty Endowment Valor Calling Card Set can be purchased through Call of Duty: Black Ops III, it’s being sold for a suggested retail price of $3.99. All gross proceeds that Activision gets by selling these cards will be donated to the Endowment, which uses these funds to help veterans find quality careers after the military service.

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick founded this non-profit, public benefit corporation in 2009 with a mission to find and serve the best and most effective veteran-serving organizations focused on getting them good jobs.

The company mentions in its press release that the Endowment has funded almost 23,000 job placements to date, with average cost-per-placement being less than $600 with a six-month retention rate of 89 percent.

“To date, the Call of Duty community has contributed over $1 million to our efforts to help veterans through the in-game program,” said the Endowment’s Executive Director Dan Goldenberg, he also thanks Sony and Microsoft for their partnership in this endeavor as the in-game program enables Activision to collect donations from countless players within the Call of Duty game itself.

Entrepreneurship in the British Virgin Islands with Stedman Graham

I recently had the distinct pleasure to present my Identity Leadership Program in Tortola, British Virgin Islands (BVI) where the business community is called on to display their gifts and their talents under the theme, “Innovation through Giftedness.”

Specifically, the program seeks to ignite the socioeconomic engine of the BVI through entrepreneurship.

It is important today to realize that to lead others you must first lead yourself.

I’ve dedicated my life to providing a proven methodology and learning management system that teaches you how to organize your life around your identity. This knowledge allows for the application of the gifts of entrepreneurs, and in the BVI, the intention is to propel the achievement of a sustainable socioeconomic vision through a well-defined set of policies, educational programs and business infrastructure.

The result of the three-day event was the igniting of an entrepreneurial flame within a relatively small but richly diverse group of individuals who collectively have the capacity to change the socioeconomic landscape of the BVI.

From my vantage point, developing and maintaining success in a community or country is due in large measure to recognizing that change starts with the individual.

Businesses, and those that lead and are employed by them, are the drivers of economies. They are the engine that affects family, finances, community and culture. Doing business, while managing leadership success in the 21st century, is riddled with complexities and opportunities.

Now is the time for leadership, change, improvement, growth, and the acceptance of new challenges as they continue to emerge. The differentiator is whether you, your workforce, and your constituents are prepared with the skills and mindset to meet these challenges.

Starting with the ‘self’ requires that we begin by helping each person understand his or her identity. This process begins with the realization of what you are passionate about, followed by the development of a vision driven by a set of core values.

Many people spend a lifetime life working below their potential. This is a core reason why the BVI leadership is fostering creativity, entrepreneurialism, and lifelong learning habits necessary for people to thrive in the 21st century.

The “Innovation Through Giftedness” program was executed in the BVI under the leadership of Mr. Meade Malone, CEO MWM Global Holdings, Blue Ocean Enterprises Limited and REVOLT TV. The exceptional individuals who answered the call to demonstrate their products and services in a competitive format received instruction and guidance on how to build the foundation for taking their business to the next level. Knowing who they are and the pathway to success….imagine what they will achieve and how they will impact their country!

It is critical that we each define our skills or gifts, and use our 24-hours in each day to continuously learn and improve as we fulfill our purpose. The result will be the sustainable awakening of the socioeconomic engine at every level of the society.

2016-05-29-1464550537-2869175-stedmangrahampicture1.png

One of the many valuable takeaways that I was able to leave with the participants was the understanding that if each of them take what they love and are passionate about, download information around those things and organize a process of continuous improvement and mastery, they would achieve freedom. Freedom to succeed, freedom to grow, freedom to make a difference, freedom to positively impact their families, organizations, villages, towns, cities, islands, states, countries, nations and indeed the world. This view was supported by Mr. Kelly Griffin, head of music programming, REVOLT TV, who encouraged participants to “Study your craft…the greats such as Beyoncé, Prince and P. Diddy, studied their craft… That is what will make you great.”

2016-05-29-1464550296-4454149-stedmangrahampicture2.png

Notably, the program included a forum discussion that involved public and private sector representatives at the highest levels to identify the specific program, policy, regulation and business infrastructure necessary to build a sustainable foundation for achieving the socioeconomic goals of the BVI. A key outcome of the forum, identified by Premier of the BVI, Dr. the Hon. D Orlando Smith, was insights on building the capacity for BVI businesses to become major employers and exporters.

Asked by Forum Host, Mr. Meade Malone about some of the things that could be done to ensure that the vision for entrepreneurship in the BVI becomes a reality, Mr. Curt Richardson, Founder, Chairman and Chief Visionary Officer of Otter Products LLC, encouraged the government, to invest in educating entrepreneurs and advised that it does not have to be done in a formal manner.

“What is important in building the entrepreneurial ecosystem is building in the education that is critical to giving them the tools to assist with the blocking and tackling of business. Education can come through mentoring, internet based learning, formal class room training and coaching.” -Mr. Curt Richardson

Richardson further suggested that government can allocate resources to assist entrepreneurs by establishing economic zones with low rent and ensure their placement in high traffic tourist areas. Additionally, considerations could be given to some form of subsidy that would help entrepreneurs learn the value of developing a good reputation and taking responsibility for the own success.

“We want to set up seed capital, but don’t give too much money because there is a lot you learn by struggling.” – Mr. Curt Richardson.

2016-05-29-1464549599-1029951-stedmangrahampicture3.png

The Innovation Through Giftedness program continues with the building of an entrepreneurial ecosystem identified by all of the panelists and guest speakers as being critical to the sustainability and success of the program.

Jeremy Scott Gallery Opens at 151 Ludlow Street

2016-05-29-1464552650-7363949-jeremyquote.jpg
New York-based artist/photographer Adrian Wilson transformed his chic LES storefront (151 Ludlow) into a “Jeremy Scott Free Inspiration Gallery (or copying if you do the same to them).”

On Wednesday, May 18th, an eclectic group of New Yorkers gathered at Wilson’s 151 Ludlow Street estate for The Fashion Law “Fashion vs. Street Art” event.

2016-05-29-1464553589-4507717-gallerypics.jpg

The event was held to prompt discussion about “what legal protection for graffiti means for the fashion and art worlds.” The discussion, led by The Fashion Law Editor-In-Chief Julie Zerbo, included New York-based artist/photographer Adrian Wilson (Gallery Owner), a graffiti artist and Eriq Gardner, a Senior Editor at The Hollywood Reporter.

The need for this conversation was sparked by the onslaught of copyright allegations faced by beloved designer Jeremy Scott.

If you are not up to date on the case, here is a summary:

On the heels of settling a copyright infringement lawsuit with famed graphic designer, Jimbo Phillips a few seasons ago, designer Jeremy Scott was been slapped with yet another infringement lawsuit. This time, Scott and Italian design house Moschino are on the receiving end of a lawsuit filed by Joseph Tierney, the street artist referred to as “RIME”, in connection with more alleged copying by Scott, who serves as the creative director for Moschino and his own eponymous label.

Eriq Gardner, Senior Editor at The Hollywood Reporter climbed a fire-escape ladder to educate the crowd on the latest developments in the pending litigation:

The defendants are making a new argument that artistic works that are the product of illegal conduct are not entitled to copyright protection. Summary judgment papers
(read here) open with discussion of the famous murder:

“As one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in Los Angeles history, the Black Dahlia murder continues to stir the public imagination and, in this case, provides a useful illustration of the most essential thing Plaintiff is lacking: a valid copyright,” writes attorney John Tehranian. “The Black Dahlia’s killer was, no doubt, a felon. But was he also a valuable copyright holder as a result of his illegal activities?”

Tehranian explains that Black Dahlia’s murderer hacked up the bodies of his victim in “a particularly original and artistic way” and suggests it would be ludicrous if “photographs of the killer’s criminal handiwork” set off a copyright infringement lawsuit from that murderer.

Teaching children to like or dislike things based on their own opinion and conclusions instead of piggybacking on their peers’ take on the subject is crucial.

Adrian Wilson, the gallery owner, aims to get people thinking about why they do and say the things they do. For example, he shared with me a story about his son coming home from school saying he did not like George Bush. He asked his son why to see if he had formulated his own opinion or just repeated what he heard others say. I enjoy asking people why they hate the Kardashians for the same reason. This The Fashion Law interview with Wilson is a great read.
