Apple’s Echo Competitor Rumored To Feature Facial Recognition

Apple-sign-logo110712125041

It was rumored earlier this week that Apple is working on a new product not unlike Amazon Echo. The smart home product is reportedly going to be powered by Siri and it’s expected to be unveiled at the Worldwide Developers Conference next month. A new report claims that this product will be quite superior to its rival as it’s going to have support for facial recognition.

Amazon may have kicked things off with the Echo and later expanded the product lineup, but other companies have started to take note of the potential that these devices have. A couple of weeks ago, Google unveiled the Google Home, a similar product that puts the company’s intelligent search assistant at the heart of it all.

According to the report, Apple’s device is going to be “self-aware,” meaning that it will be able to use facial recognition to tell who is in the room. It will then pull up that person’s preferences so that the lighting and music are just the way they like it.

While the report doesn’t mention if the camera inside the product could be used for home surveillance as well, it’s easy to see that it could be a possible use case for this device as well, but it may not be something that privacy advocates will warm up to initially.

Still, it’s early days, and since Apple hasn’t confirmed anything yet we can’t really be sure if the company really intends to come out with this product. We’ll find out for sure at WWDC 2016 next month.

F1 2016 Screenshots Officially Released

f1-2016-4

If you weren’t that satisfied with the previous F1 title then there’s good news for you. Codemasters has introduced F1 2016, making note of the fact that this title includes the “most immersive career mode” that it has ever featured in an F1 title. It has released some screenshots of the new game as well though they show a work in progress so don’t be too quick to pass judgements on the visuals just yet.

The new career mode in F1 2016 spans 10 seasons and will take players deeper into the world of F1, both off and on track. They’ve even thrown in the safety car and the virtual safety car for good measure.

“A rich car upgrade system is fully integrated into a new and deep practice development programme which mirrors the tests carried out by the teams in real life,” explains Lee Mather, principal game designer.

For the first time, players will be able to experience the practice development programme which lets them take advantage of the tests done by teams on a grand prix weekend. They can master circuits with track acclimatisation tests, test tyres, and adjust race strategy, while gaining Research and Development points which can be spent on upgrading cars.

Codemasters promises to reveal more information about this title in the near future. No release date has been provided as yet but F1 2016 is going to arrive at some point later this year on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Apple Fighting Call For Ban On iMessage And Facetime

facetime

VirnetX, a patent licensing firm, was recently awarded $625 million after a jury ruled in its favor, finding that Apple has wilfully infringed on four of its patents. The company isn’t going to stop chasing Apple even after that verdict. It’s seeking a ban on iMessage and Facetime, two of Apple’s most popular communications services, claiming that its patents are being infringed and that this has caused VirnetX “irreparable harm.”

The company now wants further damages and holds the view that Apple should be barred from using its patented technologies to power Facetime and iMessages, services which are used by hundreds of millions of people across the globe.

Apple isn’t going to take all of this lying down. It’s contesting the claims, requesting the court to disregard the previous verdict as the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has invalidated VirnetX’s claim to these inventions. It merits mentioning here that this action by the USPTO is already being challenged in a separate case before the Supreme Court.

Apple argues that its customers will be impacted if it’s told to pull the plug on iMessage and Facetime. VirnetX is claiming that a ban is necessary as its own video app called Gabriel Collaboration Suite is suffering as a result of Apple’s actions.

The Cupertino company has not yet issued a statement on this matter.

Soccer Star Alan Pulido Kidnapped In Mexico

MEXICO CITY, May 29 (Reuters) – Alan Pulido, a Mexican striker for the Greek soccer team Olympiakos, was kidnapped in the northeastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, authorities said on Sunday.

Authorities in Tamaulipas tweeted that there is a “special operation” to find Pulido, who disappeared in Ciudad Victoria on Saturday night.

Ismael Quintanilla, Tamaulipas state prosecutor, told reporters that Pulido was intercepted by armed men after leaving a party.

“At this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with Alan,” the Olympiakos team tweeted. “We sincerely hope that this ordeal will soon end and that he will return home safely.”

Tamaulipas, which abuts Texas, is an especially violent part of Mexico.

Kylie Jenner and rapper PartyNextDoor seem to be getting pretty close these days.

Jenner and the Canadian rapper (whose real name is Jahron Anthony Brathwaite) shared a couple Snapchat videos over the weekend, leading many people to say their relationship is definitely official. In one short clip, PND is seen playing a piano as he serenades Jenner.

“Kylie, oh Kylie,” he sings.

In the other, after Jenner appears annoyed that he deleted her from his social media accounts, he tells her he is protecting her. As People reports, Jenner’s “delete me” comment could be referring to a video PND deleted last week after he and Jenner were seen bowling together. Jenner was photographed putting her arm around the rapper, fueling the relationship rumors even more.

Defining the American Masses: The Common Man or Third-Graders Without a Chaperone?

“You’ve reached group-sales for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. How may I help you?”

“Hi there! Our third-graders are touring Manhattan and we thought we could bring them by tomorrow.”

“Certainly.”

“That’s great. This chaperoning is wearing us down so thought we’d drop them off in the morning, catch a show and a few beers and pick them up around 5 or so, if that’s okay”

“Umm….Well, we need to have the kids chaperoned…because, you know, there’s a lot of priceless items…”

“Thanks so much. We’ll be by at 10!”

“Now, the doors open in just a minute…but just small children with sticky fingers, please!”

There aren’t too many teachers or directors of any respected institution that would permit this scenario. After all, it’s hard to take a selfie of you and Van Gogh if there’s some kid drawing horns sticking out of the straw hat. But lately, we’re okay with our other famously innovative institution being taken over by the kids — namely our country.

Perhaps if the negligent parents above were lucky enough to get tickets to Hamilton they might stumble inadvertently into the middle of the same argument at the heart of the American Experiment since its inception — is John Q. Public really to be trusted.

Alexander Hamilton didn’t think so. The blockbuster musical that is re-introducing our founding fathers is based upon Ron Chernow’s extremely read-able biography of the man who not only created the nation’s financial system but also, among a hundred or so other things, served as George Washington’s wartime ghost-writer/bad cop and created the Coast Guard to enforce tariffs that would help pay the bills.

Hamilton’s early years in a slave-port allowed him to witness firsthand what unchecked human behavior can do — all in the name of profit. If morals are set to the side, people are capable of unbelievably atrocious things. He debated vigorously with slave-owner Thomas Jefferson who grew up wealthy and never had to deal directly with his beloved man.

In essence, it came down to one question? Who would you prefer living next door–a stable family with smart parents or a frat house?

Millionaire Charles Foster Kane and his “Precious Underpriviliged”

In Citizen Kane, Charles also raised wealthy, is at a loss to understand why his election failed after headlines linked him to an extramarital affair — a blackmail attempt from his rival to force Kane to withdraw his candidacy. Hubris be-damned, Kane went through with the election and ruined his marriage and his closest friendship with his childhood pal Jed, who calls him on his hypocrisy.

Long as I can remember, you talked about giving the people their right – -as if you could make them a present of liberty, as a reward for services rendered…you used to write an awful lot about the working man. He’s turning into something called organized labor. You’re not going to like that one little bit when you find out your working man expects something as his right, not your gift. Charlie, when your precious under privileged really get together, oh-boy, that’s going to add up to something bigger than your privilege and I don’t know what you’ll do — sail away to a desert island somewhere, and lord it over the monkeys.

For Charlie Kane, the masses need to be carefully chaperoned by a wise father. But as Jed points out, those children may not really want or trust their father. Henry Ford and Walt Disney both experienced similar shock and feelings of betrayal when their lucky workers actually wanted a union.

Donald Trump hopes to “Take America Back” but back from whom and back to where is rather foggy.

Perhaps 50 years from now, this election may be looked upon as historically significant as anything that the Federalists debated. After all, the three remaining candidates are all something we’ve never had before this far along the primary season — a woman, a Jew and a rich TV celebrity who has never sought office.

Three often-heard quotes seem to sum them up.

  • On Hillary Clinton: “Okay, she’s smart and experienced, I just don’t really like her.”
  • On Bernie Sanders: “I’ll give him one thing, he’s never changed in thirty years. But come on, it could never work.”
  • On Donald Trump: “At least he speaks his mind.”

Of course, getting back to our museum tour, it’s likely that many of those third graders also speak their mind but I’m not sure you’d trust them to give the tour, let alone conduct everyone safely outside in case of an emergency.

Perhaps it’s my years in the classroom, but I’ve always shied away from candidates who would probably be unable to substitute for me on a sick-day. We’ve all had those subs when we were kids–the ones that let the classroom turn into an episode of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. As much as a Democrat as I’ve always been, I never thought that Mondale, Dukakis, Gore or Kerry would have survived in my class–but I know that Bill Clinton and Barack Obama would have been so good I’d probably get a call that afternoon from my principal suggesting I stay home as long as I’d like.

Hamilton argued against Washington stepping down after two terms — he predicted accurately that the United States was probably, in his short lifetime, not going to get a better father-figure since the Declaration — not for at least four score and seven years, anyway.

There is a growing snowball of articles comparing the personality and chameleon-like background of Donald Trump to Benito Mussolini (see March Salon article), a former socialist who, after his expulsion from that party and experience in WWI, founded fascism and, in 1922, became Italy’s youngest prime minister. His engaging speaking, creation of scapegoats and general encouragement of bullying tied with his secret police turned his elected office into a dictatorship in five years through legal as well as violent means, inspiring a similar path to Adolf Hitler in 1932. Over 100 million perished in six years of war primarily due the rest of the world letting three bullies go unchecked.

The old question goes, How do you stop a bully on the playground? And the old answer–stand up to him.

2016-05-29-1464550966-391421-Petoskey.png

The executive editor of the northern Michigan Petoskey News Review, Jeremy McBain hopes that someone will stand up to the bully, writing on May 26th:

This man is an embarrassment to the United States of America and I can’t believe the Republican party, a party that has plenty of other qualified and dignified potential candidates it could place before the voters, decided to go with this lying, racist, misogynistic, fascist-flirting bully that uses grade-school name-calling and conspiracy theories as his platform. This “man” is certainly not what presidential material looks like. (link)

Hamilton was accused of advocating a new royalty, just after the colonies had removed the old king. But his clause was that they should only govern as long as their morals were in order.

So, can the masses be trusted? How do you define the masses? Will they show up to vote? Will they be organized? Will they be fist-fighting just outside the polls?

It’s an interesting question right now, as polls show a national wave of disgust and disinterest in this election and its extreme candidates, how many people might instead opt for four more years of Barack Obama, given the alternatives–because for many even if the third graders have a chaperon, he might be carrying a blowtorch into the museum.

Entrepreneurship In the Virgin Islands with Stedman Graham

I recently had the distinct pleasure to present my Identity Leadership Program in Tortola, British Virgin Islands (BVI) where the business community is called on to display their gifts and their talents under the theme, “Innovation through Giftedness.”

Specifically, the program seeks to ignite the socioeconomic engine of the BVI through entrepreneurship.

It is important today to realize that to lead others you must first lead yourself.

I’ve dedicated my life to providing a proven methodology and learning management system that teaches you how to organize your life around your identity. This knowledge allows for the application of the gifts of entrepreneurs, and in the BVI, the intention is to propel the achievement of a sustainable socioeconomic vision through a well-defined set of policies, educational programs and business infrastructure.

The result of the three-day event was the igniting of an entrepreneurial flame within a relatively small but richly diverse group of individuals who collectively have the capacity to change the socioeconomic landscape of the BVI.

From my vantage point, developing and maintaining success in a community or country is due in large measure to recognizing that change starts with the individual.

Businesses, and those that lead and are employed by them, are the drivers of economies. They are the engine that affects family, finances, community and culture. Doing business, while managing leadership success in the 21st century, is riddled with complexities and opportunities.

Now is the time for leadership, change, improvement, growth, and the acceptance of new challenges as they continue to emerge. The differentiator is whether you, your workforce, and your constituents are prepared with the skills and mindset to meet these challenges.

Starting with the ‘self’ requires that we begin by helping each person understand his or her identity. This process begins with the realization of what you are passionate about, followed by the development of a vision driven by a set of core values.

Many people spend a lifetime life working below their potential. This is a core reason why the BVI leadership is fostering creativity, entrepreneurialism, and lifelong learning habits necessary for people to thrive in the 21st century.

The “Innovation Through Giftedness” program was executed in the BVI under the leadership of Mr. Meade Malone, CEO MWM Global Holdings, Blue Ocean Enterprises Limited and REVOLT TV. The exceptional individuals who answered the call to demonstrate their products and services in a competitive format received instruction and guidance on how to build the foundation for taking their business to the next level. Knowing who they are and the pathway to success….imagine what they will achieve and how they will impact their country!

It is critical that we each define our skills or gifts, and use our 24-hours in each day to continuously learn and improve as we fulfill our purpose. The result will be the sustainable awakening of the socioeconomic engine at every level of the society.

2016-05-29-1464550537-2869175-stedmangrahampicture1.png

One of the many valuable takeaways that I was able to leave with the participants was the understanding that if each of them take what they love and are passionate about, download information around those things and organize a process of continuous improvement and mastery, they would achieve freedom. Freedom to succeed, freedom to grow, freedom to make a difference, freedom to positively impact their families, organizations, villages, towns, cities, islands, states, countries, nations and indeed the world. This view was supported by Mr. Kelly Griffin, head of music programming, REVOLT TV, who encouraged participants to “Study your craft…the greats such as Beyoncé, Prince and P. Diddy, studied their craft… That is what will make you great.”

2016-05-29-1464550296-4454149-stedmangrahampicture2.png

Notably, the program included a forum discussion that involved public and private sector representatives at the highest levels to identify the specific program, policy, regulation and business infrastructure necessary to build a sustainable foundation for achieving the socioeconomic goals of the BVI. A key outcome of the forum, identified by Premier of the BVI, Dr. the Hon. D Orlando Smith, was insights on building the capacity for BVI businesses to become major employers and exporters.

Asked by Forum Host, Mr. Meade Malone about some of the things that could be done to ensure that the vision for entrepreneurship in the BVI becomes a reality, Mr. Curt Richardson, Founder, Chairman and Chief Visionary Officer of Otter Products LLC, encouraged the government, to invest in educating entrepreneurs and advised that it does not have to be done in a formal manner.

“What is important in building the entrepreneurial ecosystem is building in the education that is critical to giving them the tools to assist with the blocking and tackling of business. Education can come through mentoring, internet based learning, formal class room training and coaching.” -Mr. Curt Richardson

Richardson further suggested that government can allocate resources to assist entrepreneurs by establishing economic zones with low rent and ensure their placement in high traffic tourist areas. Additionally, considerations could be given to some form of subsidy that would help entrepreneurs learn the value of developing a good reputation and taking responsibility for the own success.

“We want to set up seed capital, but don’t give too much money because there is a lot you learn by struggling.” – Mr. Curt Richardson.

2016-05-29-1464549599-1029951-stedmangrahampicture3.png

The Innovation Through Giftedness program continues with the building of an entrepreneurial ecosystem identified by all of the panelists and guest speakers as being critical to the sustainability and success of the program.

Tropical Storm Bonnie Weakens To Depression

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Reuters) – Stormy weather in the Southeast and Central United States subsided on Sunday as Tropical Storm Bonnie was downgraded to a tropical depression and searches were under way in Texas and Kansas for three people swept away by floods.

Bonnie came ashore just northeast of Charleston, South Carolina, on Sunday morning, bringing heavy rains, minor flooding and sustained winds of about 30 miles per hour.

The system, the first tropical storm to reach the United States this year, dumped 3 to 4 inches of rain in many parts of South Carolina and triggered flooding in low-lying areas and streets at high tides, weather forecasters said.

In the Beaufort area, south of Charleston, 8 to 10 inches of rain fell, said Carl Barnes, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Charleston.

“We’re not out of the woods because the heavy rain could move back over us today if it really sits on us,” he said.

Heavy rains are still falling in eastern Georgia and portions of the Carolinas, the National Hurricane Center said in its 11 a.m. ET advisory. Maximum sustained winds have flagged to about 35 mph, punctuated by higher gusts.

The storm is now moving north along the coast, where it is expected to soak the coastal Carolinas and move offshore or dissipate after moving over the North Carolina Outer Banks, Barnes said.

Before a slow weakening on Monday, the system is expected to deposit 2 to 4 inches of rain in central and eastern South Carolina to the Georgia border, and 1 to 3 inches farther north across southeastern North Carolina, the center said.

Forecasters warned that the storm would likely produce dangerous surf and rip currents along the U.S. Southeast coast, a particular concern during the long Memorial Day weekend, when swimmers and surfers typically flock to beaches.

In spite of the risk, dozens of surfers gravitated to Folly Beach near Charleston over the weekend to ride the storm swell and lumpy waves. But rain has dampened Memorial Day weekend for thousands of beachgoers.

Alli Pulley, desk clerk at The Tides hotel on Folly Beach, said guests were staying put despite the weather and the 132-room hotel was full.

“No, they’re not leaving,” she said. “I think they just have this time off for vacation. It’s this or go back home and sit down.”

Police and U.S. Coast Guard teams were searching on Sunday for a missing swimmer in Carolina Beach, North Carolina, 15 miles south of Wilmington, after a report of a man in distress in the ocean about 8 p.m. on Saturday, according to authorities.

Thousands of visitors are in Charleston for the opening weekend of Spoleto Festival USA, an annual, three-week international performing arts event. Rain is expected to continue through Monday, but most performances are indoors.

Near Austin, Texas, a search was on for two people last seen struggling against rushing water on a roadway on Friday, said Lisa Block, emergency services spokeswoman for Travis County. One person was seen in a truck and another was spotted holding onto a roadside pole at the same location, Block said.

In Wichita, Kansas, authorities resumed their search on Sunday for an 11-year-old boy believed to have died after being swept away by a rushing creek on Friday, Fire Battalion Chief Scott Brown said in a report on KAKE TV. Fire officials could not be reached for further comment.

Heavy rain in the Houston, Texas, area prompted the evacuation on Sunday of two prisons in nearby Rosharon as the Brazos River is expected to reach historic levels, said a statement from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
