ZTE Opening 23 Stores To Increase Smartphone Sales

zte-axon-7-1

ZTE is a pretty well-known brand in China but it’s not exactly a household name outside of the People’s Republic. The company is looking to fix that to an extent this year by setting up 23 retail stores across Europe and China. It’s going to use the stores to drive smartphone sales. The new locations will be spread across China and Europe, even Russia and Mexico have made the list.

The company was sixth in terms of global smartphone shipments in the previous quarter and it shipped a total of 53 million units last year. It’s looking to ship at least 70 million units this year.

Retail stores have proven to be very lucrative for the smartphone business of some companies, look no further than Apple, ZTE is basically going with the same idea by trying to promote its smartphones through a retail experience that it controls from start to finish.

The stores will enable ZTE to lift brand awareness while increasing sales in the markets it values the most. The company recently announced its flagship Axon 7 smartphone. It’s a flagship with specifications like the Snapdragon 820 processor, 6GB RAM, Quad HD AMOLED display, and it even happens to be among the very first smartphone to have support for Google’s Daydream VR platform.

ZTE Axon 7 will be released in the U.S. later this month, however, the company currently has no plans to open up a retail store in these United States.

Watch 2016 Rio Olympics In 4K On NBC

nbc-sign

4K televisions are gradually becoming popular and HDR, a relatively new trend, is catching on as well. Those who have a TV that supports these standards will be able to get an enhanced viewing experience of the upcoming Olympics. NBC has announced that it will provide carriers with content from this year’s games, enabling viewers to watch 2016 Rio Olympics in 4K and HDR. The only caveat here is that there’s going to be a 24 hour tape delay.

NBC is going to provide footage of the Opening and Closing ceremonies, basketball, swimming, track and field, judo, and the men’s soccer final in 4K UHD on a 24 hour tape delay, meaning that viewers will have to wait an extra day to watch all of this in Ultra High Definition.

“The Olympics have been a consistent driver of technological advancements, and Rio will be no different,” said Gary Zenkel, NBC Sports president.

The network is actually going to broadcast a downconverted version of the 8K Olympics feed that’s being tested in Japan. It’s going to bring that in 4K with HDR and Dolby Atmos surround sound audio.

Content providers haven’t really confirmed yet if they will be making this content available from NBC to their subscribers, but given that Dish is supporting UHD in its newest boxes and DirecTV has started broadcasting 4K channels, it’s likely that a few of the mainstream providers will be onboard.

The 2016 Rio Olympics start August 5th, 2016.

New Video Shows Zoo Gorilla With Boy Before Ape Was Shot Dead

Newly released video shows the moments just after a 4-year-old boy crawled into a gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo, which led to zoo officials shooting and killing the animal.

After the boy, whose name has not been released, got into the enclosure, the gorilla, a 17-year-old western lowland silverback named Harambe, dragged the boy around, and picked him up and held him. Zoo officials feared for the boy’s safety, and director Thane Maynard said at a press conference that they did not use tranquilizers because the drugs would take too long to take effect.

Video of the incident taken by zoo visitor Kim O’Connor was published by local news station WLWT on Saturday, though the station cut the footage of the gorilla actually dragging the boy through the water surrounding the enclosure. The video also does not show the gorilla being shot.

O’Connor said she overheard talking about the boy wanting to get into the enclosure before the incident took place.

“The little boy himself had already been talking about wanting to … get in the water,” she told WLWT. “The mother’s like, ‘No, you’re not, no, you’re not.”

She noted that the boy’s mother was also watching several other young children. Officials believe the boy crawled through a railing barrier, then fell into the moat around the enclosure. He was taken to a hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The child was never actually under attack, Maynard admitted at the press conference. But Maynard said the zoo considered the situation life-threatening since the “extremely strong” 400-pound gorilla was in an agitated state.

Animal behaviorist Dave Salmoni (whose methods have proven somewhat controversial) told “Good Morning America” on Sunday that he wouldn’t second-guess the zoo’s decision to kill the gorilla.

“I would say it’s easy to suggest this is life-threatening danger,” Salmoni said. “In a captive environment, you never know how an animal’s going to react to something like this. And typically a silverback gorilla can either be nervous of something like this, something new, like a child entering the enclosure, or react aggressively, and it’s the aggressive reaction you really have to worry about.”

Salmoni noted that zookeepers typically care deeply for their animals and that people should provide the best possible care for the many animals in captivity.

But, he added, “In a perfect world, there would be no animals in zoos.”

GIs Saved My Father from the Nazis

In early April 1945, my father was packed into a train with 2500 other prisoners from Bergen-Belsen as the Nazis insanely tried to keep British and American troops from rescuing them. The train was made up of 45 cars with their doors sealed shut; the crowding was horrific and of course there was no food or water.

2016-05-27-1464362290-3475104-boxcars.jpg

In the chaos of war, this hellish train wandered for a week and finally stopped not far from the Elbe because the commander couldn’t get clearance to move across that river with communications so disrupted. He fled ahead of the American troops he knew were coming and the remaining guards escaped when two American tanks appeared on April 13th.

Frank W. Towers, a 1st Lieutenant of the 30th Infantry Division, reported that the stench when the locked cattle cars were opened “was almost unbearable, and many of the men had to rush away and vomit. We had heard of the cruel treatment which the Nazis had been handing out to Jews and political opponents of the Nazi regime, whom they had enslaved, but we thought it was propaganda and exaggerated. As we went along [in Germany] it became more apparent that this barbaric savagery was actually true.”

(Frank Towers in France, 1944)

The troops that had found this train were racing to the Elbe because it was the last barrier to their advance across Germany. Now they had a totally unexpected burden of some twenty-five hundred prisoners to house and provide for. The answer was about nine miles to the west. American troops had just captured several hundred Germans at the Wehrmacht base and proving ground in Hillersleben where tests had been conducted for giant railway guns manufactured by Krupp.

It was an ironic place for Jews to be sheltered, cared for, and brought back to life. But then what place in Germany wouldn’t have been?

This verdant military setting with clean, heated quarters for officers and soldiers was a virtual paradise for people who had been treated like animals for years. That’s where my parents met and fell in love. My mother was in Hillersleben because she had escaped from a slave labor camp in Magdeburg 16 miles away and been brought there by American troops now using it as a temporary Displaced Persons camp.

She and my father had each lost everything in what would come to be called the Holocaust: home, families, countries. There wasn’t any time to play pre-war games. “Do you like me?” he asked. She did, and as my father tersely put it years later, from that moment on “She was mine and I was hers.” My mother moved in with him that night, beginning their fifty-four years together.

Frank Towers, now 97, is the last surviving soldier who rescued the prisoners on that train. I’ve had the honor of meeting Frank and shaking his hand, and I’ve written about him in my memoir My Germany.. On Memorial Day, with the survivors of the Holocaust and their saviors dwindling faster and faster, it’s more important than ever to thank the “train heroes” who are no longer alive.

Extending Your Healthy Lifespan

At Human Longevity Inc. (HLI), our goal is to extend the healthy human lifespan and to revolutionize healthcare.

You’ve often heard me speak about how converging exponential technologies have the potential to disrupt industries. This is a blog providing a detailed overview of the road map for reinventing medicine and extending your “healthy, high-performance” lifespan.

I also want to invite you to join me and Brad Perkins, MD, HLI’s Chief Medical Officer, for a webinar discussing the transformation of healthcare.

I believe we have a chance to make 100 years old the new 60… for you, your family, friends and colleagues.

Info on the webinar is here.

What is HLI?

Two years ago, J. Craig Venter, Ph.D., Bob Hariri, M.D., Ph.D, and I came together with the vision of reinventing healthcare.

Today, healthcare is reactive and retrospective. Today’s system is really more like “sick care” than anything else.

If you are between the ages of 50 and 74, your mortality rates are 30 percent for a man and 20 percent for women.

HLI’s goal is to make healthcare proactive, preventative, and personalized – predicting what disease you are likely to develop, and helping you prevent it in the first place.

HLI capabilities are only possible now because of a number of converging exponential technologies:rapid, accurate whole genome sequencing (which has plummeted in cost five times faster than Moore’s Law);Machine Learning; massive data transmission and storage; and new imaging technologies (or capabilities).

Introducing the Health Nucleus

The Health Nucleus is HLI’s clinical research program based at the company’s headquarters in La Jolla, CA.

It’s where we collect 150 gigabytes of data about you during an 8-hour day gathered through a series of tests and measurements designed to deliver the most complete picture of your health.

At HLI’s Heath Nucleus, we’ll collect the following info about you:

  • Whole Genome Sequencing: We sequence all 3.2 billion letters in your genome, and we repeat it 30 times to minimize error rate (~113 gigabytes of data). HLI then puts together an integrated report, processed by our machine learning team in combination with our expert team of clinical geneticists, genetic counselors and scientists.
  • Microbiome: We next sequence the trillions of bacteria that live in your body, called your microbiome. Your microbiome plays a vital role in your immune system and how you digest and absorb foods and medicines.
  • Metabalome: We next measure the small chemical end products of the biochemical reactions (about 960+ different molecules) that give a direct functional readout of your physiological state.
  • Full-body MRI: Next, we take a high-resolution full-body MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan, able to detect cancer at its early stages. The comprehensive imaging also includes quantitative neurological segmentation to assess evidence of neurodegenerative conditions.
  • DEXA: a non-invasive imaging test that measures bone density, muscle mass and percentage of body fat. DXA allows us to assess bone loss (osteoporosis), fracture risk, and provide additional insights into body composition.
  • Gait & Balance Testing: We quantitatively measure your gait and balance as a means to evaluate your physical and neurocognitive function.
  • 4D Echocardiogram: We leverage both 3D and 4D echo imaging to gain insights into your heart structure and function — valves, heart muscle and blood flow.
  • Echocardiogram & Arrhythmia Monitoring: As part of your Health Nucleus ‘intake’ we’ll collected electrocardiogram (ECG) measurements over a number of days, looking to measure the health and function of you heart, looking for a variety of inherited arrhythmia disorders.
  • Sleep Apnea Testing: The Health Nucleus will provide an ‘at-home’ sleep monitoring system. Sleep apnea, a very underdiagnosed condition, is associated with obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and an increased risk of stroke.

And more… believe it or not, the list is growing every day as we continue to add new tests and technologies.

What We’ve Learned So Far

After collecting ~150 gigabytes of data about you, we upload that data to our machine learning platform.

The goal of analyzing your health data is two-fold:

1. To analyze and report on your current state of health

2. To make predictions on your future health condition, and ultimately give you a “longevity road map.”

So far, the results have been spectacular

From our first 200 Health Nucleus clients, we’ve discovered 30 percent have actionable discoveries with immediate clinical impact, or that identify a need for closer ongoing clinical surveillance. The Health Nucleus partners with your physician to develop a personalized health plan.

I have personally received several “thank you for saving my life” messages.

While HLI’s Health Nucleus is not for everyone, and our capacity is limited, if you are interested in participating, the benefits are numerous.

“When I joined the Indian police force in 1997, I was the first and only female officer in a batch of 35 male officers. I was doing routine police work then. In 2011, I got an opportunity to join a new United Nations Mission in South Sudan. I went to Juba for a year. As police peacekeepers, we were mentoring and training the local police there on handling violence cases. My unit dealt with women and children, and other vulnerable people affected by violence. There were a lot of challenges because the country was in the process of conflict resolution. I had to drive alone and sometimes it was late in the evening. You feel unsafe because you are not armed—anything can happen.

Despite these challenges, I had a good experience in Juba because a very beautiful thing happened. As soon as I joined the mission, there were a few female peacekeepers and we created an all-women’s network to share our experiences. For peacekeepers, it’s very difficult to leave your family behind. It’s not only the family that needs us, but it’s the other women, for whom we are role models. Women play an extremely important role in conflict situations, especially since women and children are the most affected. Through the network and my unit, we also acted as a channel between local women police officers and their authorities, since some faced some trouble and were not always safe.

I have a one-year-old daughter now, so have now opted for an office posting. I am currently a Superintendent of Police (Vigilance) at Police Headquarters in Jaipur. I also lead workshops on gender mainstreaming and budgeting. For the last year, I’ve been working with UN Women on an induction-training programme for female military officers that are supposed to be deployed to peacekeeping missions. When I went on mission, I didn’t have any specific gender-oriented pre-deployment training. We [now] train them to handle violence against women in a conflict situation before they leave. I feel very honoured and happy that I connect with women working [in this field]. It’s something very close to my heart—a passion!”

SDG 16: Peace, justice and strong institutions

Maruti Joshi, 43, from Jaipur, India, has worked as a police officer for 18 years and served as a UN peacekeeper in South Sudan. Ms. Joshi is currently working with UN Women to train women peacekeepers to address sexual and gender-based violence in conflict. Her work is connected to the Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 5, which includes ending all forms of violence against women and girls, and SDG 16, which aims to promote peaceful and inclusive societies and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

Melissa McCarthy Really Hopes The 'Ghostbusters' Haters 'Find A Friend'

Melissa McCarthy has a few words for all the people out there hating on the “Ghostbusters” reboot.

In an interview with The Guardian, the actress addressed all the criticism the film has faced, especially in relation to its female-led cast. Both director Paul Feig and fellow Ghostbuster Leslie Jones have already spoken out about the backlash.

“All those comments — ‘You’re ruining my childhood!’ I mean, really,” McCarthy said, adding, “Four women doing any movie on earth will destroy your childhood?”

She continued, “I have a visual of those people not having a Ben [her husband], not having friends, so they’re just sitting there and spewing hate into this fake world of the Internet. I just hope they find a friend.”

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

Besides, McCarthy is too busy being the third-highest earning actress in Hollywood to dwell on the haters.
