Snoozing Student's Prank Leaves University Lecturer Speechless

A college student’s schedule may not be conducive to sleep, but are students really so tired that they’re mistaking lecture halls for their dorm rooms?

This video of a snoozing student lying on a table behind a projection screen is setting YouTube on fire. The poor kid apparently rolls off the table, hits the ground, wakes up and walks out of class in the sort of humiliation that might require years to get over.

Or maybe not. Trong Huynh posted a link to the video on his Facebook page, claiming he was the “sleeping student” and the episode was a prank he recently pulled at the University of Washington. It was unclear whether Huynh knew the stunt was being recorded or if the YouTube video’s uploader knew Huynh.

Neither Huynh nor the YouTube video’s uploader immediately responded to The Huffington Post’s questions.

Prank or not, the clip is a reminder of just how real sleep deprivation is across college campuses everywhere. Surveys have shown as many as 50 percent of college students report regularly experiencing daytime sleepiness — and more than 70 percent of college students report getting less than eight hours of sleep per night on average.

Numbers like those are concerning because other research suggests students who are poor sleepers are more likely to earn worse grades and withdraw from a course compared to their better-rested peers. And other studies suggest students with sleep problems have higher rates of psychological health problems than students without sleep trouble.

You would never willingly go 24 hours without eating or drinking water — other vital necessities to your daily routine. So why is it acceptable to sacrifice sleep in order to make room for other priorities in your life?
Jacqueline Baltz, a student at University of Southern California

“You would never willingly go 24 hours without eating or drinking water — other vital necessities to your daily routine. So why is it acceptable to sacrifice sleep in order to make room for other priorities in your life?” Jacqueline Baltz, a student at University of Southern California, wrote in a Huffington Post blog.

More than 50 college students from across the country have written blogs for HuffPost about how sleep deprivation has infiltrated their college experiences (or about how they have found solutions to prioritize sleep in spite of the call of school work, jobs and a healthy social life).

Bottom line: Don’t let this be you! Sleep experts say a few (quick and easy!) dorm room tweaks — like saving your bed just for sleep and avoiding your snooze button like the plague — can help make your multipurpose personal space a better space for sleep.

Here's Where Fear the Walking Dead Now Fits on The Walking Dead Timeline

Watching Fear the Walking Dead, it’s difficult to not think about what’s happening on the other side of the continent. By that we mean Atlanta, the setting of the first Walking Dead show. Fear, of course, is a West Coast prequel set some time beforehand—but they’re both in the same universe.

Jumping Straight Down the Side of a 3,228-foot Cliff Looks Like a Neverending Free Fall

Jumping Straight Down the Side of a 3,228-foot Cliff Looks Like a Neverending Free Fall

The drop doesn’t seem to end. And that’s because the jump is off a 3,228-foot cliff in Norway. At that high of an elevation, that free fall will feel like it’s going on forever. It’s probably long enough to make you question what the hell you just did over and over again. It’s probably long enough to have your life flash before your eyes a couple times through. It’s probably long enough to maybe even forget the craziness of what you’re doing.

Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 1100 processor launched

snapdragon-wear1100Qualcomm has made quite a name for itself in the world of System on a Chip (SoC), especially its Snapdragon series that have adorned a fair number of smartphone models to date, ranging from the entry level to mid-range as well as the high end, high street brands. Well, it seems that they are also about to target low-power wearables with the official announcement of the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 1100 processor. After all, they have had some bit of experience in the smartwatch department with the Toq prior.

After all, mobile hardware means that it is not some sort of one-size-fits-all industry, where various device form factors will come with differing needs where processing power, thermal limits, and battery consumption are concerned. It looks like the Snapdragon Wear 1100 SoC is one that has been specially engineered with the specific needs of wearables in mind, where the main draws of the Snapdragon Wear 1100 happens to be its low power consumption as well as relatively tiny physical form factor.

Qualcomm is keeping its fingers crossed by positioning the Snapdragon Wear 1100 for slightly lower-demand use cases in the vein of fitness trackers, notification bands, and other applications, filling a particular niche where the Wear 2100 would be considered to be overkill.

However, do bear in mind that the Snapdragon Wear 1100 is not some kind of underpowered chipset, as it does have its merits and advantages. After all, the Snapdragon Wear 1100 will come with features such as hardware security that in turn makes it possible when it comes to mobile payment purposes, as well as an advanced location-tracking engine – something that is pretty handy if you love to always explore the great outdoors.

It remains to be seen just which particular manufacturer would want to take up the initiative to build wearables around the Snapdragon Wear 1100, but it should be sooner rather than later as the chip is already available for use immediately, shipping to interested companies since today.

Google Maps Might Let You Share ETA Soon

google logoThere is one particular question that has continued to plague parents regardless of the time or era in which they live, be it during the ancient days when walking or getting up and about on camels, or riding in a cart, or simply driving around in the most modern vehicle – “Are we there yet?”. This can get rather irritating after a while, but there are times when the journey takes a turn for the worse, no thanks to an unexpected accident that clogs traffic up. Here is a tool from Google Maps that might arrive in the future – ETA alerts.

Evidence for ETA alerts in Google Maps have started to appear, where the new Google Maps v9.26.1 for Android which was talked about yesterday that came with updated search-along-route tools for multiple transit modes, it seems that unused code within the app do look as though they are pointing in the new “Discover” mode direction, as well as files that include references to a new way of sharing ETA info.

In other words, users might be on the receiving end of the option to share their destination as well as estimated time of arrival with people who have an interest, not to mention a mode that informs them concerning the general traffic conditions that you have to face while getting there.

BlackBerry Wants Unlocked Priv To Receive Software Updates

blackberry-priv-review_ubergizmo_09The folks over at BlackBerry have stepped forward, citing that they are currently looking for a way so that its software updates will be able to end up on the BlackBerry Priv – in particular, the unlocked model that hails from AT&T. Apparently, there has been an issue with that handset that might just prevent updates from happening.

In order to be in such a “unique” situation, if you have an unlocked BlackBerry Priv from AT&T and use a SIM card other than that of AT&T’s, you will not receive any software updates. Pop in an AT&T SIM card, and you will be able to do so. If you fall under the former category, that would mean kissing goodbye to the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update and other future builds.

Fret not though, there is hope on the horizon, as we have received word that a fix is in the pipeline. It seems that BlackBerry is hoping to allow the hardware to be on the receiving end of the latest software updates even if there is no active AT&T SIM card within the device – for instance, having a T-Mobile SIM card within. Let us keep our fingers crossed that the fix will arrive sooner rather than later.
